What Apple requires in 2026
Apple treats screenshots as still image assets attached to a platform and language in App Store Connect. The September 2026 release notes changed the minimum submission coverage: provide one iPhone image sized for a 6.5-inch or 6.9-inch display, and one 13-inch iPad image. This is a minimum for submission, not a statement that every iPhone or iPad uses those pixels.
Apple’s broader rule remains one to ten screenshots per upload set. A set can contain fewer than ten images, and you can create custom sets for other device sizes or localizations when your product page needs them.
- Accepted file types:
.jpeg,.jpg, and.png. - Transparency and alpha channels are not allowed.
- Portrait and landscape are separate orientations; export the orientation your app actually supports.
- Dimensions are exact pixel dimensions listed by Apple for each platform and display group.
Apple can scale a suitable larger screenshot down to certain smaller display groups when you do not supply a separate accepted-size image. The fallback mapping is device-specific, so verify the current table rather than assuming one file covers every model.

Accepted screenshot sizes by platform
There is no universal App Store screenshot resolution. Apple groups assets by platform, display size, and generation. The examples below illustrate current groups; they are not a replacement for Apple’s complete, changing matrix.

Open Apple’s reference table, select the platform and display group, and copy the listed width and height into your design or export preset. Do not resize a portrait file by simply swapping numbers for landscape; redesign or reflow the composition so text and controls remain readable.
How many screenshots should you prepare?
Minimum submission coverage
For submissions made under Apple’s September 2026 rule, prepare at least one 6.5-inch or 6.9-inch iPhone screenshot and one 13-inch iPad screenshot when your app supports iPad. The release-note wording is dated and may change with later device introductions, so check the current release notes immediately before upload.
Using the one-to-ten allowance
Use additional images when they communicate distinct features: onboarding, the core workflow, a differentiating capability, and a result screen. Ten nearly identical frames create work without adding information. Keep the first screenshot understandable on its own because it is often the first image users see in search and product-page placements.
When separate device sets are worthwhile
Create a custom set when layout, navigation, or copy changes materially between iPhone and iPad, when a localization needs different text length, or when a feature exists only on one platform. If the UI is effectively the same, Apple’s upload guidance recommends supplying the highest-resolution required screenshots and allowing supported downscaling.
Design and export checklist
- Capture the real, current app UI; do not show controls or features unavailable in the submitted build.
- Keep important text inside safe margins so device framing and product-page layouts do not obscure it.
- Export at the exact pixel dimensions Apple lists for the selected group. Avoid repeated JPEG recompression.
- Use JPEG, JPG, or PNG without an alpha channel. Flatten transparent layers against an appropriate background before export.
- Check every localized set for clipped words, untranslated strings, and text that no longer fits.
- Name files by platform, size, orientation, locale, and sequence (for example,
iphone69-en-01.png) so reviewers can identify mistakes quickly.
Uploading screenshots in App Store Connect
- Sign in to App Store Connect and open My Apps, then select your app.
- Open the platform section of the app record and choose the version or product-page area where screenshots belong.
- Drag in one to ten images for the selected device-size group, or use the upload control to select files.
- Use Media Manager to create or select custom device-size and localization sets. Reuse an existing image only when its dimensions and language are appropriate.
- Review the rendered previews, ordering, and metadata, then save the product-page changes and submit the version when ready.
Apple permits screenshot uploads while the app is in Prepare for Submission, Invalid Binary, Rejected, Metadata Rejected, or Developer Rejected status. After approval, changing screenshots requires creating a new app version, according to Apple’s upload guide.

Screenshot sets, localization, and scaling decisions
One image versus separate images
If the same interface and marketing message work across supported sizes, start with the highest-resolution accepted asset and let Apple scale it where the specification permits. Inspect the scaled result: small labels can become illegible even when the file is technically accepted.
Custom sets with Media Manager
Media Manager is the right place to override the default set for a particular device size or language. Use it when an iPad layout has different navigation, when landscape is the primary experience, or when a translation needs a different line break. Keep the sequence consistent within each locale so reviewers and users encounter the same story.
What happens if a size is missing?
Apple may use an eligible larger screenshot for a smaller display group. It will not make an arbitrary dimension valid, and it cannot fix a design that depends on a cropped edge. If App Store Connect rejects an image, return to the specification row for that platform and export exactly one of the listed sizes.
Screenshots versus app previews
App previews are optional videos, not replacements for still screenshots. Apple allows up to three previews per supported device size and language for iOS, macOS, tvOS, and visionOS apps. Each preview is 15 to 30 seconds and no larger than 500 MB; encoding and resolution details are in Apple’s preview specification.
Apple’s upload workflow for making previews refers to a Mac running macOS 10.10 or later, Safari 8 or later, video-editing software, and a compatible Apple device. Those production requirements apply to video previews, not to the still-image file rules above.
Reliable ways to create the image files
Capture on a simulator or device
Run the release build at the target display size, navigate to a clean state, and capture the screen using the simulator’s screenshot command or the device’s hardware shortcut. Remove debug overlays, status-bar artifacts, and test accounts before export. Confirm the resulting pixel dimensions in an image editor rather than trusting the canvas size shown by your design tool.

Compose marketing frames
You may place a device capture inside a designed frame, but the final flattened file still must match Apple’s accepted pixel dimensions and contain no transparency. Check contrast and dynamic text sizes on an actual device; a headline that looks balanced on a desktop artboard can cover a critical control on a smaller screen.
Common errors and fixes
“Invalid image dimensions”
Cause: the width or height does not match the selected device group, often because a designer exported points instead of pixels.
Fix: select the exact platform row in Apple’s specification, set the artboard in pixels, export again, and upload it to the matching size group.
“Transparency is not allowed”
Cause: a PNG retained an alpha channel, even if the visible canvas looks opaque.

Text is clipped or unreadable after scaling

Fix: shorten copy, increase type size, simplify the frame, or provide a custom screenshot for that device group through Media Manager.
The wrong language appears
Cause: the file was uploaded to the default locale or an existing Media Manager set.
Fix: select the intended localization before uploading, verify the locale label, and inspect each image in order.
Upload controls are unavailable
Cause: the app is not in one of Apple’s eligible statuses, or you are editing an approved version.
Fix: use an eligible status listed in Apple’s guide; for an approved app, create a new version before changing screenshots.
A screenshot shows a blank or loading screen
Cause: capture occurred before network content, permissions, or asynchronous data finished loading.
