A reliable app health dashboard cannot be built from a green process endpoint or one cumulative counter. For each scheduled game-data import, create a durable run record with a stable job-and-window identity, record attempts and validation, and commit an explicit terminal outcome with the imported records. Alert only when a due window has passed its deadline without a successful or explicitly accepted-empty result. Use aggregate metrics for trends, but keep run-level evidence in a ledger, logs, or traces.

This design separates three concerns: whether a worker is reachable, what work was observed in aggregate, and whether every expected import window reached a committed outcome. That separation is what exposes a silent import that returned HTTP 200 yet produced no usable records.

What the three health boundaries prove

“Health” is not one fact. A process can answer probes while its scheduler is stuck, its feed is empty, or its database transaction is rolling back. Treat the following as separate signals rather than substitutes:

Boundary What it proves What it cannot prove Best use
Process or probe health The worker responds to a health request and is reachable. That a scheduled window ran, received valid data, or committed records. Detecting a dead process, crashed container, or unreachable endpoint.
Instrumented aggregate metrics Observed counts, durations, failures, and gauges over time. Which individual run was absent or which retry produced a particular result. Trend dashboards, capacity signals, and alerting on rates or latency.
Durable run ledger plus aggregate exports Each expected window reached a committed terminal outcome, or remains missing or unknown. Nothing about a window that was never materialized as expected work unless the scheduler or evaluator creates that record independently. Correctness of scheduled imports and forensic run-level investigation.

OpenTelemetry distinguishes metric instruments from SDK aggregation and export. Defining a counter or histogram does not by itself create a dashboard or guarantee that data reaches a backend; the SDK pipeline, exporter, collection path, and destination must also be configured.

Why a green endpoint is insufficient

A liveness or uptime poll can return success while the import loop is waiting on a broken queue, skipping a UTC window, receiving an empty upstream response, or failing during the final database commit. Keep the heartbeat because it answers an availability question, but do not use it as proof of import correctness.

Why one cumulative counter is insufficient

A metric such as imports_total can show that some work completed. It cannot establish that the 02:00 window completed, distinguish a missing window from a duplicate retry, or identify the run whose records were later rolled back. Those facts belong to the run ledger.

Design a durable run ledger

The ledger is the source of truth for scheduled correctness. Give every logical job and UTC window one stable identity, then store retries as separate attempts. A retry must never create a new logical window, because doing so can make a missing schedule appear complete.

Minimum run record

Field Purpose
job Stable name for the import workload, such as a game-data feed.
window_start_utc The scheduled UTC interval represented by the run.
run_key Deterministic key derived from job and window; enforce uniqueness.
expected_at and deadline_at When the window is due and when absence becomes alertable.
attempts Separate attempt identifiers, start times, and failure details for retries.
validation_status Whether parsing, schema checks, and business validation passed.
accepted_count Number of records accepted by the import transaction.
outcome A terminal state such as succeeded, empty_expected, failed, or abandoned.
committed_at Time the imported records and terminal outcome became durable.

Write an expected-run record before execution, or have an independent scheduler materialize it. If expected rows are created only by the producer, a stopped scheduler can fail to create the very record that would reveal its absence.

Define success at the commit boundary

HTTP 200 from an upstream service, successful parsing, and a pre-transaction write are intermediate events. Mark the run successful only after the final database transaction commits the imported records and the terminal outcome. If the transaction rolls back, the run is not successful even when every earlier step reported success.

When the source legitimately has no items for a window, record an explicit accepted-empty outcome such as empty_expected. An unexplained zero accepted count is not equivalent to an expected empty feed; it should remain failed, unknown, or otherwise non-success according to your policy.

Make the result atomic, or reconcile it

The strongest pattern commits imported rows and the terminal run status in one transaction. If the ledger and data store cannot share a transaction, write an outbox event in the same transaction as the imported records and have a reconciler apply the terminal status. The reconciler must expose lag and errors; otherwise a successful import can look missing indefinitely.

Export useful metrics without losing run boundaries

Use low-cardinality aggregate instruments for dashboards and alerts. A typical completion counter is import_completed_total with dimensions such as job, region, environment, and outcome. Add a duration histogram for execution time and, where useful, gauges for evaluator lag or the age of the oldest overdue window.

Keep labels bounded

Do not put a run ID, player identifier, email address, access token, raw payload, or other unbounded value into a metric label. Every distinct label combination can create a new time series, increasing storage, query, and alert-evaluation costs while exposing data that does not belong in a metrics backend. Put high-detail correlation data in the governed run ledger, logs, or traces instead, and include a linkable correlation key there.

Separate observed work from expected work

A completion counter records events that happened. It does not represent the set of windows that should have happened. The evaluator must compare expected ledger rows with terminal outcomes and emit an absence signal when a deadline passes without an acceptable result. This is why a dashboard can show a flat counter while a scheduled import is silently missing.

Use exemplars or trace correlation carefully

If your telemetry stack supports exemplars or trace links, attach a sampled correlation reference to selected metric observations rather than turning every run identifier into a permanent metric dimension. The full attempt history and payload-independent diagnostic context remain in the trace or ledger store.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Evaluate overdue windows independently

The absence evaluator must be operationally independent from the producer. If the scheduler, worker, or queue stops, a separate evaluator still needs to inspect expected windows and raise the condition.

  1. Materialize the schedule. Create one expected row for each logical job and UTC window. Enforce uniqueness on the run key.
  2. Set a deadline. Define when the window should be complete and when it becomes overdue. A 15-minute schedule can be an illustrative test case, but 15 minutes is not a universal alert threshold; choose a deadline from the feed’s normal latency, retry policy, and business impact.
  3. Inspect terminal outcomes. Treat succeeded and the explicitly authorized empty_expected state as acceptable. A pending row, an unexplained zero, a failed commit, or a duplicate attempt without a terminal result is not success.
  4. Alert after the deadline. Do not page merely because a run is still within its allowed processing window. Alert when the deadline has passed and no acceptable terminal outcome is durable.
  5. Report unknown separately. If the ledger read, evaluator query, or alerting path fails, report unknown, not healthy. Monitor evaluator execution, read failures, and evaluation lag as their own signals.
  6. Close the condition from the ledger. Recovery should occur when the missing window receives an acceptable committed outcome, not merely when the worker endpoint becomes reachable.

Use UTC for schedule keys and deadline calculations. Convert to local time only in the user interface, where the time-zone context is shown explicitly.

How to choose a hosted health API

A hosted service is useful only if it preserves the distinction between availability, aggregate telemetry, and run-level correctness. Evaluate the service against your workload rather than selecting it because it offers a generic “heartbeat” check.

Selection question Evidence to require Why it matters for silent imports
Can it represent an idempotent outcome? An idempotent event or standard metrics path that accepts repeated delivery without creating false successes. Retries must not hide a missing logical window or double-count a result.
Can it detect absence from an external schedule? A monitor or query that evaluates overdue windows independently of the producer. A dead scheduler cannot report its own failure.
Does it expose ingestion failures? Visible exporter, collector, API, and dashboard errors with alertable status. A failed telemetry pipeline must not make the application appear healthy.
Can ownership be preserved? Dashboards and alerts grouped by stable job, region, and environment dimensions. The responsible workload must be identifiable without high-cardinality run labels.
Are retention and deletion controls explicit? Documented behavior for raw events, logs or traces, metric aggregates, and deletion requests. Retention and erasure obligations differ by data type.
Is regional data flow transparent? Current documentation of processing regions, subprocessors, and export paths. A hosting region alone does not establish where every telemetry copy is stored.
Can costs be attributed? Usage dimensions for event volume, metric series, alert evaluations, and retention tied to a defined workload. Telemetry spend should be assigned to the job that generates it.

Keep an ordinary heartbeat or uptime poll as a separate availability check. It is valuable for unreachable endpoints, but it cannot detect a live worker that missed its schedule, accepted an empty feed unexpectedly, or failed to commit.

Protect telemetry and meet deletion obligations

Metrics should contain only the dimensions needed for operations. Player identifiers, email addresses, access tokens, raw game payloads, and unbounded run IDs belong in a governed store with access controls and an explicit retention policy.

GDPR Article 17 describes a right to erasure subject to conditions and exceptions. Do not infer deletion behavior from a vendor’s hosting region. Verify how the service deletes raw events, traces, logs, and metric aggregates; whether backups and derived aggregates persist; how a deletion request is authenticated; and what legal exceptions apply. Record those answers in your data inventory and vendor review.

Implementation sequence

  1. Specify the contract. Write down the logical job/window key, UTC schedule, deadline, accepted-empty rule, terminal outcomes, and ownership dimensions.
  2. Create expected work independently. Materialize the expected row before execution or from a scheduler that is monitored separately.
  3. Record attempts. Store each retry with its own attempt ID, timestamps, upstream status, validation result, and error category while retaining the same logical run key.
  4. Commit the outcome with the data. Use one transaction where possible; otherwise use an outbox and a reconciler with measurable lag.
  5. Instrument aggregates. Export completion counts, durations, accepted counts, failures, and evaluator lag using bounded dimensions.
  6. Run the independent evaluator. Query overdue expected rows, classify missing versus unknown, and emit alerts only after the configured deadline.
  7. Connect dashboards to ownership. Show job, region, environment, outcome, deadline age, and links to ledger or trace details without exposing sensitive payloads.
  8. Test the failure paths. Exercise every case below before enabling production absence alerts.

Failure modes and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Corrective action
Probe is green but no new records exist. Process health is being mistaken for import health. Use the ledger evaluator and commit-boundary outcome.
HTTP 200 is logged, but the run is absent. Success was recorded before validation or transaction commit. Move terminal success to the commit boundary and reconcile old partial rows.
Zero records are treated as success. No explicit empty-feed policy exists. Require empty_expected or classify the result as non-success.
Retries make the dashboard look healthy. Each attempt has a different logical identity. Use one job/window key and separate attempt IDs.
No alert fires when the scheduler stops. Expected rows are produced only by the scheduler. Materialize expected work independently and monitor evaluator health.
Telemetry costs or series counts grow unexpectedly. Run IDs or user data are metric labels. Remove unbounded attributes and keep detail in logs, traces, or the ledger.
Everything appears healthy during a telemetry outage. Exporter or evaluator failures are swallowed. Expose ingestion and evaluator status as explicit unknown or failure signals.

Production rehearsal checklist

  • Normal successful import reaches succeeded only after records and outcome commit.
  • Legitimate empty source window reaches empty_expected with an auditable reason.
  • Missed window becomes overdue only after its configured deadline.
  • Duplicate retry remains one logical run with multiple attempts.
  • Database rollback never leaves a false successful outcome.
  • Ledger-read failure produces unknown and a separate evaluator alert.
  • Exporter failure is visible rather than silently creating a green dashboard.
  • Metric labels remain bounded when run volume increases.
  • Retention and deletion behavior is documented for raw and aggregate telemetry.

“Record each scheduled game-data import as a run with an explicit outcome, then alert on missing successful results only after its deadline; choose a hosted health API by whether it preserves those run boundaries and attributes telemetry costs to the responsible workload.”

— CianWinslow371, DEV Community, 2026

The practical result is a dashboard that answers two different questions without confusing them: “Is the service reachable?” and “Did every expected game-data window produce an acceptable, committed result?” The first belongs to a probe; the second belongs to the run ledger and its independently evaluated deadlines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a single OpenTelemetry counter prove that every scheduled import ran?

No. A counter summarizes observed completions and cannot identify an absent window. Compare expected ledger rows with terminal outcomes, then use counters for aggregate trends.

Should a legitimate empty feed trigger an alert?

Only when emptiness is not expected. Record an explicit accepted-empty outcome for windows where no source records is valid; an unexplained zero should not be treated as success.

What deadline should a 15-minute import schedule use?

There is no universal threshold. The 15-minute interval is an illustrative schedule, not a reliability target. Set the deadline from normal source latency, retries, and the business cost of late data.

Where should individual run IDs be stored?

Keep them in the durable run ledger, governed logs, or traces. Do not use unbounded run IDs as metric attributes because they create high-cardinality series and can expose sensitive correlation data.
