Short answer: an API gateway is usually an API-focused reverse proxy, so both can accept client traffic and route it to backend services. The gateway role normally adds centralized API policies and lifecycle features—such as authentication, rate limits, transformations, monitoring, publication, and consumer access—but those capabilities depend on the product and its configuration. A reverse proxy can also provide sophisticated routing and security. Choose based on the responsibilities you need, not the label on the box.

What a reverse proxy does

A reverse proxy sits in front of one or more origin servers. Clients connect to the proxy instead of addressing application servers directly; the proxy then selects a backend, forwards the request, and returns the response. It can hide internal network details, terminate TLS, apply traffic rules, cache responses, compress content, and distribute requests across servers.

Routing can be static or dynamic. A configuration might send /images to an asset service, /orders to an order service, or select an upstream based on the host name, HTTP method, headers, or protocol. NGINX and HAProxy are examples of open-source reverse-proxy software identified in Microsoft Azure architecture guidance. Calling a reverse proxy “basic” is misleading: a carefully configured proxy can enforce authentication, rate limits, caching, and request controls.

The proxy’s usual responsibility

  • Provide one network entry point while keeping origins private.
  • Route traffic by host, path, method, header, protocol, or other rules supported by the implementation.
  • Terminate or pass through TLS and enforce transport-security settings.
  • Buffer, cache, compress, or reject traffic before it reaches an application.
  • Distribute requests when the proxy or an adjacent load balancer is responsible for balancing.
  • Expose access logs and health information for operations.

These are patterns, not a universal feature checklist. A particular reverse-proxy deployment may implement only a subset, while a commercial or managed product may add many more controls.

What an API gateway adds

An API gateway is a reverse-proxy entry point designed around API consumers and API policies. Amazon API Gateway, for example, is an AWS service for creating, publishing, maintaining, monitoring, and securing REST, HTTP, and WebSocket APIs. Cloudflare describes an API Gateway as accepting API calls while acting as a reverse proxy.

The gateway often centralizes rules that would otherwise be repeated in every service:

  • Identity and access: authenticate callers and authorize operations, consumers, scopes, or roles.
  • Quota and rate enforcement: limit requests by client, key, subscription, route, or time window.
  • Contract handling: validate parameters and payloads, and sometimes enforce an API schema.
  • Transformation: map headers, query parameters, and request or response bodies between a public contract and a backend contract.
  • Caching: serve eligible responses without invoking the backend.
  • Observability: collect API-aware metrics, logs, traces, and consumer-level usage data.
  • Lifecycle and publication: expose stages, versions, documentation, developer access, keys, subscriptions, or other management features.

Do not assume that every gateway includes every item. Feature names, limits, supported protocols, pricing, and configuration models vary substantially between managed services and self-managed software.

Why the boundary is not absolute

Both components can terminate a connection, inspect a request, choose an upstream, and return a response. AWS documentation describes API Gateway HTTP proxy integrations and explains that API Gateway routing can resemble an HTTP reverse-proxy approach. Conversely, a reverse proxy can be configured with authentication, authorization, rate limits, caching, transformations, and monitoring.

The useful distinction is therefore about emphasis and ownership:

Capability comparison

Decision area Reverse proxy API gateway What to verify
Primary role Front door for web or service traffic and origin protection API-focused front door with centralized consumer and policy controls Whether the product’s policy model matches your APIs
Routing Host, path, method, header, protocol, and upstream rules vary by software API routes, integrations, stages, and methods; exact behavior varies Required route types and backend integration options
Authentication and authorization Possible through modules, configuration, or an external identity layer Often built into the API policy model, but supported mechanisms vary Identity protocols, key handling, scopes, and policy evaluation points
Rate limits and quotas Possible; usually configured as traffic rules Commonly exposed per API, route, consumer, key, or subscription Granularity, burst behavior, and failure responses
Request or response transformation Possible with configuration, scripting, or extensions Often a documented integration feature Payload formats, error mapping, and maintenance cost
Caching Common for suitable HTTP responses May include API-aware cache controls Cache keys, invalidation, privacy, and consistency
API publication and lifecycle Usually external to the proxy May include stages, versions, documentation, keys, and consumer management Whether third-party or internal consumers need a managed API product
Load balancing May balance upstreams or sit behind a dedicated load balancer May or may not balance; product-specific Health checks, algorithms, zones, and where balancing occurs
Operations Team deploys, patches, scales, and monitors the software unless hosted Managed service reduces infrastructure work, or self-managed gateway retains it Control, portability, staffing, and operational limits

How a request travels through each design

Reverse-proxy flow

  1. A client resolves the public host name and opens a connection to the proxy.
  2. The proxy applies transport and traffic rules, then matches the request against routing configuration.
  3. The proxy selects an origin or upstream pool and forwards the request, potentially changing headers or protocol details.
  4. The origin produces a response; the proxy may cache, compress, filter, or log it before returning it to the client.

This design is effective when the main need is a controlled, resilient entry point and the application teams can own API-specific policy inside their services or another identity layer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

API-gateway flow

  1. The client calls a published API endpoint, often with a key, token, or other identity credential.
  2. The gateway authenticates the caller and evaluates authorization, quotas, and route policy.
  3. The gateway validates or transforms the request and selects an integration or backend.
  4. The backend responds; the gateway can transform errors or payloads, apply cache rules, emit API metrics, and return the result.

The extra policy stage is valuable when many services must present consistent rules to multiple consumers. It also creates another dependency, configuration surface, and possible bottleneck, so policies should be limited to responsibilities that genuinely belong at the edge.

Which one should you choose?

Choose a reverse proxy first when traffic mediation is the main problem

  • You need host or path routing, TLS termination, origin isolation, and predictable web-traffic handling.
  • Consumers are controlled by your applications or an existing identity layer rather than by a separate API-product workflow.
  • You want to run software close to your workloads, control configuration, and avoid a managed gateway’s per-request model.
  • Transformations and quotas are simple enough to implement in the proxy, load balancer, or services.

Choose an API gateway when APIs are a managed product

  • Several teams need one consistent authentication, authorization, quota, and rate-limit policy.
  • External developers, partners, or many internal applications need keys, subscriptions, stages, documentation, or usage reporting.
  • You must translate a stable public contract to changing internal services without exposing those internal details.
  • API-specific monitoring and lifecycle controls are more important than low-level proxy flexibility.

Use both when their responsibilities are different

A common layered design places a network load balancer or reverse proxy at the edge, an API gateway behind it, and services behind the gateway. The outer layer can handle network exposure, TLS, static assets, or broad traffic distribution; the gateway can handle consumer identity, API quotas, transformations, and publication. This is not automatically better. Every layer adds latency, configuration, certificates, logs, failure modes, and cost. Add a layer only when it owns a distinct responsibility.

Routing design: avoid unnecessary central coupling

Centralizing every service path in one gateway configuration can turn a small backend change into a gateway deployment. AWS recommends avoiding an overly granular central mapping for every service path and illustrates wildcard routes such as /billing/*. A team can delegate the remaining path selection to the billing service or a downstream router, reducing root-gateway changes.

  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

This is an AWS design recommendation, not a universal rule. A wildcard can make authorization, observability, caching, and ownership less precise. Use it when the downstream service can safely own subroutes and when the gateway still enforces the policies that must remain centralized. Keep explicit routes when different methods, consumers, limits, or security rules need separate treatment.

Concrete AWS behavior to understand

HTTP proxy integration

AWS describes an HTTP proxy integration as forwarding requests to an HTTP endpoint with a simpler setup when custom request and response mapping is not needed. It is a close match to a conventional reverse-proxy pass-through: the gateway handles the API entry point while the backend receives a largely corresponding request.

Custom integration

A custom integration allows mapping of incoming request data and integration responses. Choose it when the public API must differ from the backend contract, when parameters need reshaping, or when backend errors must be translated into a stable client-facing format. The flexibility increases configuration and testing work; every mapping becomes part of the API’s operational surface.

Protocol and lifecycle scope

AWS positions its service for creating, publishing, maintaining, monitoring, and securing REST, HTTP, and WebSocket APIs. Those capabilities are specific to that service and plan, not proof that every product called an API gateway supports the same protocols or lifecycle features.

Load balancing is a separate decision

Do not infer load-balancing behavior from the word “gateway.” Azure Architecture Center states that Azure API Management does not perform load balancing and may be used with a load balancer or reverse proxy. That is product-specific guidance, not a rule for all API gateways.

Before deployment, identify the component responsible for:

  • Registering healthy backend instances.
  • Choosing an algorithm and handling connection draining.
  • Spreading traffic across zones, regions, or clusters.
  • Removing failed instances and restoring them after recovery.
  • Preserving client identity and correlation headers across layers.

If no selected component owns these tasks, the gateway may route correctly while the service remains unavailable or unevenly loaded.

Do not confuse Kubernetes Gateway API with an API gateway

Kubernetes Gateway API is a Kubernetes project and resource model for service networking. Its documentation describes L4 and L7 routing for ingress and mesh use. Some API gateway products can be programmed using Gateway API resources, but the project itself is not an API gateway product and does not automatically provide consumer subscriptions, developer portals, quotas, or a managed API lifecycle.

In a Kubernetes architecture, ask two separate questions: which controller implements the Gateway API resources, and which component provides public API management? The same controller may provide both in some distributions, but that is an implementation choice rather than a definition of Gateway API.

AWS describes an HTTP reverse proxy as potentially very cost-effective at around 100,000 transactions per second or better for one particular routing pattern. Treat that as AWS guidance for that architecture, not as an industry-wide benchmark or a promise for another product.

Build a workload-specific comparison using:

  • Requests per second, peak bursts, concurrent connections, payload sizes, and WebSocket duration.
  • Number of routes, transformations, authentication calls, and cacheable responses.
  • Cross-zone and cross-region data transfer.
  • Managed request charges, gateway capacity units, proxy instances, load balancers, logging, and observability costs.
  • Engineering time for upgrades, incident response, policy testing, and configuration review.
  • Service quotas and scale limits, including what happens when a quota is reached.

Run representative load tests in the intended region and topology. A benchmark that omits identity calls, transformations, logging, or cache misses does not represent the production path.

Security and reliability checklist

  • Terminate TLS with a documented certificate owner and renewal process.
  • Authenticate before expensive backend work and authorize each sensitive operation.
  • Apply request-size, timeout, method, content-type, and header controls.
  • Use rate limits that protect both the gateway and the backend; define the response when limits are exceeded.
  • Keep private service addresses out of public responses and error messages.
  • Separate client-facing logs from sensitive payload data and define retention.
  • Propagate a correlation identifier through every layer without trusting arbitrary client values.
  • Health-check the actual dependency needed for traffic, not merely the proxy process.
  • Test certificate expiry, identity-provider failure, backend timeouts, partial outages, and configuration rollback.
  • Document which layer owns authentication, authorization, caching, load balancing, retries, and transformations so policies are not accidentally duplicated.

Migration path from a reverse proxy to an API gateway

  1. Inventory the current proxy. Record hosts, paths, methods, upstreams, headers, TLS settings, timeouts, caches, authentication hooks, rate rules, and health checks.
  2. Separate edge duties from API duties. Mark each rule as network exposure, routing, consumer identity, quota, transformation, observability, or lifecycle management.
  3. Define the public contract. Write the supported methods, schemas, error format, authentication requirements, and version or stage behavior before moving routes.
  4. Choose integration behavior. Use pass-through HTTP proxying where the backend contract already fits; use explicit mappings where the public and private contracts intentionally differ.
  5. Recreate policies with ownership. Assign one authoritative layer for each rate limit, authorization decision, retry, cache rule, and transformation.
  6. Test failure paths. Exercise invalid credentials, expired credentials, quota exhaustion, malformed payloads, slow backends, unavailable identity providers, and partial gateway failure.
  7. Canary the traffic. Route a controlled client subset to the gateway, compare status codes and latency with the proxy path, and watch backend load.
  8. Retire duplicate rules. After the gateway is stable, remove obsolete proxy mappings or document why both layers still need them.

Common mistakes and fixes

“A gateway replaces a load balancer.”

Not necessarily. Confirm the selected product’s health checks and balancing features; add a dedicated load balancer or reverse proxy when the gateway does not own that responsibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A reverse proxy cannot enforce API security.”

It can, depending on software, modules, and configuration. Compare the required identity and policy features rather than assuming they are absent.

“Every route belongs in the central gateway.”

Overly granular mappings create deployment coupling. Consider a bounded wildcard such as /billing/* when the downstream service can safely own subroutes, while retaining explicit routes where policy differences require them.

“Kubernetes Gateway API is an API management product.”

It is a Kubernetes service-networking API. Identify the controller and separately verify whether you have developer access, subscriptions, quotas, analytics, and lifecycle tooling.

“More gateway layers automatically improve security.”

Duplicated policies can drift. Assign ownership, test the complete chain, and remove rules that do not add a distinct control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision sequence

  1. List the public consumers and the identities they use.
  2. List the policies that must be uniform across services.
  3. Decide whether API publication, stages, documentation, keys, subscriptions, or consumer analytics are required.
  4. Map routing, transformation, caching, and load-balancing responsibilities to specific components.
  5. Compare managed and self-managed operational effort at the expected traffic level.
  6. Validate quotas, regional availability, protocol support, failure behavior, and pricing for the exact products under consideration.
  7. Prototype one representative API, including authentication, a transformed request, a backend failure, and a load test.

Bottom line

An API gateway and a reverse proxy can perform the same fundamental job: receive a request and route it to a backend. The gateway designation matters when you need API-centered policy and lifecycle management, while a reverse proxy is often the simpler and more controllable choice for routing and origin protection. Product capabilities overlap, load balancing may be separate, and Kubernetes Gateway API is a different concept. Select the smallest set of layers that gives your consumers and operators the controls they actually need.
