“Big Bertha” was IBM’s T221, a remarkable 22.2-inch monitor built around a 3840 × 2400-pixel screen. The name needs a small qualification: IBM’s technical report calls its 2000 prototype “Bertha”; “Big Bertha” is the wording used in a 2009 AnandTech forum discussion.

What was IBM’s “Big Bertha”?

It was the IBM T221, a high-resolution flat-panel color monitor. IBM Research says the prototype, code-named “Bertha,” was created in 2000 through a joint effort between IBM Research and IBM Japan. IBM announced the first product version in June 2001, then improved its interface electronics and announced a replacement product in November 2001. IBM’s 2002 technical report documents the project and its specifications.

The exact phrase “Big Bertha” appears in the title of a 2009 AnandTech forum discussion and in the contemporary description reproduced there. So it is a recognizable nickname, but not the precise codename IBM uses in its report.

Why was the T221 unusual?

Its 3840 × 2400 QUXGA-W format packed 9.22 million pixels into a screen measuring 560 mm diagonally—about 22.2 inches—with a density of 204 pixels per inch. For context, IBM’s report described the display as offering “a factor of 5 to 7 times” the information content of conventional displays. That was IBM’s characterization in 2002, not a modern independent comparison.

The attraction was the ability to view dense, detailed material on one screen. IBM researcher Steven L. Wright is quoted in the 2009 AnandTech forum discussion as saying, “The T221 offers a whole new relationship with data.” The same thread attributes to him: “Before Bertha, we were looking at data through a soda straw.” These quotations are reproduced in that forum thread; the original IBM publication containing them has not been independently located.
