Filmmaker Anubhav Sinha says he first came to Lucknow for work and grew attached to the city. Now, he returns for film shoots, events and promotions—and for food he carries home. “Lucknow is my middle-age ishq!” he told Deep Saxena in a Hindustan Times profile published October 2, 2026.

Why Lucknow became personal for Anubhav Sinha

Sinha describes his connection to the city through the different places that shaped his life. Banaras is where he spent his childhood; Aligarh is tied to a college-days love; Mumbai gave him more than he imagined. Lucknow, he says, is his “middle-age ishq.”

In the profile, Sinha recalls that before shooting Mulk, he had visited Lucknow only twice. Work brought him back, and film shoots, events and promotions turned those visits into a recurring relationship with the city. The travel history and his description of the bond are his recollections as reported by Saxena.

How filmmaking brought him back

The Hindustan Times profile reports that Sinha directed Mulk (2018), Article 15 (2019) and Thappad (2020) in Lucknow. It also mentions other projects, including unreleased work; the article’s list is not a claim that every project has been released.

For Sinha, then, the relationship is both professional and emotional: filmmaking repeatedly put him in the city, while the attachment he describes makes Lucknow more than a work location.

The food he associates with visits to Lucknow

Food is another part of Sinha’s account of why he returns. He told Saxena that he took home sweets, moongbari, achaar, phirni and khatta-meetha karela—and said he left that visit with 10 kg of foodstuff. That figure is his anecdote about one visit, not a general measure of what visitors buy.

The profile names several places and dishes he mentioned:

  • Gayatri Sweets in Cantt: samosas.
  • Netram in Aminabad: kachauri.
  • Sabir’s in the Old City and Naimatkhana: also among the named stops.
  • Private khansamas: the profile also refers to delicacies prepared by them.

Sinha’s view is that notable Lucknow food includes vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian dishes. These are interview mentions, not a ranked restaurant list or a comprehensive guide; the profile does not establish current opening hours, menus or access details.
