Anti-ship missiles fly through the air; torpedoes travel underwater. That difference shapes how each weapon is launched, guided, and used. Missiles can be carried by aircraft, ships, submarines, or shore installations, depending on the system. Heavyweight torpedoes such as the U.S. Navy’s MK 48 are submarine weapons used against both ships and submarines. Neither category is a universal winner: the weapon’s platform, mission, target, and engagement conditions matter.

What is the difference between a missile and a torpedo?

An anti-ship missile approaches a vessel through the air. A torpedo approaches underwater. Because they operate in different environments, they face different sensing and defensive conditions: missile defenses and electronic warfare are relevant to an incoming missile, while underwater detection and countermeasures matter to a torpedo engagement.

Those are category-level distinctions, not a complete performance comparison. “Missile” and “torpedo” each cover weapons with differing designs and capabilities. A system’s launch platform, target, guidance, and mission are more informative than its category name alone.

How the two weapon families are used

Anti-ship missiles: air-launched or launched from other platforms

Anti-ship missiles provide a standoff attack option against surface vessels. The particular launch options depend on the weapon. Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) describes the Harpoon as an all-weather, over-the-horizon anti-ship missile system and lists aircraft, surface ships, submarines, and shore batteries among its launch platforms. NAVAIR says the system uses mid-course guidance and a radar seeker to attack surface ships.

NAVAIR’s Harpoon page describes it as “an all-weather, over-the-horizon, anti-ship missile system that provides the Navy with a common missile for air and ship launches.” The page says the Harpoon family was first introduced in 1977; that date refers to this missile family, not to anti-ship missiles as a whole.

Torpedoes: underwater weapons, including submarine weapons

The MK 48 is a heavyweight torpedo used by submarines for anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare. The Naval Sea Systems Command fact file describes it as acoustic-homing, with digital guidance and control. This example illustrates why “torpedo” should not be taken to mean a weapon used only against submarines: the MK 48 is also intended for use against surface ships.

The Navy’s fact file, last updated November 15, 2023, lists the MK 48 at 21 inches in diameter and 3,744 pounds. Those figures apply to that model, not to torpedoes generally. The Navy identifies MOD 7 as the latest version and says it was jointly developed by the U.S. and Royal Australian navies.

Missile and torpedo examples compared

Weapon Operating medium Launch platform Guidance or role described by the official source
Harpoon anti-ship missile Air Aircraft, surface ships, submarines, and shore batteries (NAVAIR) Mid-course guidance and radar seeker; attacks surface ships (NAVAIR)
Long Range Anti-Ship Missile (LRASM) Air Air-launched (NAVAIR) Long-range offensive anti-surface weapon for high-threat maritime targets; semi-autonomous guidance intended to work from less-precise target cueing (NAVAIR)
MK 48 heavyweight torpedo Underwater Submarines (Naval Sea Systems Command) Acoustic homing with digital guidance and control; anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare (Naval Sea Systems Command)

The table compares only details stated for these specific systems. It is not a matched test: the cited official pages do not provide directly comparable range, speed, cost, probability-of-hit, or destructive-effect figures.

How guidance and operating conditions differ

Missile guidance depends on the system

NAVAIR describes the Harpoon as using mid-course guidance and a radar seeker. Its description of LRASM emphasizes a different set of design aims: the air-launched weapon is intended to reduce dependence on intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance platforms, network links, and GPS in electronic-warfare environments. NAVAIR says LRASM uses semi-autonomous guidance to operate with less-precise target cueing. These are qualitative descriptions; they do not establish a specific range, hit probability, or effectiveness figure.

Torpedo guidance operates underwater

The MK 48 fact file identifies acoustic homing and digital guidance and control. That is specific to the MK 48 description. It should not be generalized to every torpedo, just as the Harpoon’s radar seeker does not describe every anti-ship missile.

The distinct operating media also mean their defenses and countermeasures are not interchangeable. Air defenses and electronic-warfare considerations concern an airborne missile approach; underwater sensing and countermeasures concern a torpedo. The relevant details depend on the weapons and scenario, so neither set of considerations supports a universal claim that one category is easier to defeat.

Can a submarine use either weapon against a ship?

Yes. A submarine may attack a surface ship with a torpedo or, if equipped with the relevant system, a submarine-launched anti-ship cruise missile. The U.S. Navy’s warfare overview describes both options. A submarine is therefore a launch platform that can cross the missile–torpedo divide; the weapon’s operating medium still distinguishes the two.

It is also important not to treat all torpedoes as interchangeable. Lightweight anti-submarine torpedoes and heavyweight weapons such as the MK 48 have different intended roles. When discussing a particular torpedo, identify the model and mission rather than assuming that every torpedo has the MK 48’s anti-surface role.

  • Operating medium: Does it travel through the air or underwater?
  • Launch platform: Is it launched from an aircraft, ship, submarine, or shore installation? Do not assume a capability listed for one missile applies to all missiles.
  • Target and mission: Is it intended for surface ships, submarines, anti-surface warfare, or anti-submarine warfare?
  • Guidance and target acquisition: What sensing or guidance method does the source identify for that model?
  • Engagement conditions: What does the source establish about range, speed, or operating conditions? The official descriptions summarized here do not provide matched range or speed data.
  • Defenses and countermeasures: Assess these for the specific weapon and scenario rather than assuming air and underwater engagements work alike.
