Anti-reflective Gorilla Armor 2 screen technology debuted on the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra in January 2025. The factory-installed glass-ceramic cover reduces reflected ambient light and improves viewing comfort, while Corning claims stronger drop and scratch performance than competing materials. Gorilla Armor 2 does not eliminate glare or make a screen protector unnecessary for every owner.

The announcement was made on January 22, 2025, in Corning’s U.S. release; Samsung’s global newsroom version is dated January 23 in Korea. The feature belongs specifically to the Galaxy S25 Ultra, not automatically to every Galaxy S25 model.

Key takeaways

  • Gorilla Armor 2 is a scratch-resistant, anti-reflective glass-ceramic cover material installed over the Galaxy S25 Ultra’s front display.
  • Corning says Gorilla Armor 2 survived drops up to 2.2 meters onto a concrete-replicating surface in laboratory testing, while competing glass-ceramic materials failed at one meter.
  • Corning also claims more than four times the scratch resistance of competing lithium-aluminosilicate cover glass with an anti-reflective coating; these are supplier test claims, not a guarantee against real-world damage.
  • The Galaxy S24 Ultra already had first-generation Gorilla Armor and anti-reflective behavior, so the S25 Ultra represents an improvement rather than the beginning of the category.
  • A screen protector remains a personal trade-off: bare glass preserves the factory optical finish, while a protector provides a replaceable sacrificial surface but may add reflections, texture, thickness, or S Pen friction.

What is anti-reflective Gorilla Armor 2 screen technology?

Anti-reflective Gorilla Armor 2 screen technology is the front-display cover material used on the Galaxy S25 Ultra. Corning describes Gorilla Armor 2 as a scratch-resistant, anti-reflective glass ceramic—the first material of that type for mobile devices according to the company’s announcement.

“Glass ceramic” describes the cover-material category. “Anti-reflective” describes the optical behavior of the surface. Gorilla Armor 2 is therefore more than a user-applied film or a conventional matte protector: it is a factory-installed glass-ceramic cover material designed to reduce reflected light while protecting the display.

The official Corning device listing identifies Gorilla Armor 2 on the Galaxy S25 Ultra’s front display and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for the rear panel. The official announcement does not establish that the same front-cover material appears on every phone in the Galaxy S25 range.

How does Gorilla Armor 2 differ from Gorilla Armor?

Gorilla Armor 2 is the successor to the first-generation Gorilla Armor used on the Galaxy S24 Ultra. Both generations are associated with anti-reflective behavior, but Corning positions Armor 2 as a durability improvement that retains the practical glare-reduction advantage.

Feature Galaxy S24 Ultra Galaxy S25 Ultra
Front cover material Corning Gorilla Armor Corning Gorilla Armor 2
Anti-reflective behavior Yes Yes
Main claimed change First-generation implementation Improved drop and scratch performance, according to Corning
Rear cover Confirm separately for the specific device Corning lists Gorilla Glass Victus 2

The useful conclusion for S24 Ultra owners is that the S25 Ultra does not introduce anti-reflective display technology from scratch. The S24 Ultra already delivered much of the everyday optical benefit; the newer phone’s material is intended to make that approach more durable.

Why does reducing reflections matter if the display is already bright?

Screen brightness and screen reflectivity solve different problems. Brightness controls how much light the OLED panel emits, while reflectivity controls how much room light or sunlight bounces back toward the viewer.

A bright reflection can cover dark areas of an image, reduce perceived contrast, and make text harder to read even when the OLED panel is producing deep blacks. A less reflective surface leaves more of the display’s own image visible. The difference should be most useful under office lighting, near windows, inside a car, beneath overhead lamps, and outdoors in direct or diffuse daylight.

Dark-mode interfaces can make the benefit especially noticeable because reflected windows, lamps, faces, and bright shapes stand out strongly against black or dark-gray content. Maps, camera previews, e-books, messages, and web pages can also become easier to inspect when reflected light is less distracting.

A review from Business Standard observed that the S25 Ultra retained brightness and color accuracy while Gorilla Armor 2 improved visibility through its anti-reflective treatment. That is a review observation, not an independent standardized measurement of reflectance or contrast.

How durable is Gorilla Armor 2?

Corning’s published laboratory claims point to improvements in both drop and scratch resistance, but the results should be read as controlled test comparisons rather than insurance against a particular accident.

Corning’s laboratory claims

  • Gorilla Armor 2 reportedly survived drops from up to 2.2 meters onto a surface designed to replicate concrete.
  • Competing glass-ceramic materials reportedly failed at one meter in the cited comparison.
  • Corning says Gorilla Armor 2 delivered more than four times the scratch resistance of competing lithium-aluminosilicate cover glass with an anti-reflective coating.

See Corning’s January 2025 release and its technical description of Gorilla Armor 2. Corning supplied these figures under its stated test conditions; the figures are not independent testing and do not predict the result of every fall or contact with every abrasive.

A phone can still crack when it lands on a corner, a raised edge, or an unusually hard object. Sand, grit, tools, and repeated contact with abrasive debris can still mark a display. Gorilla Armor 2 should be treated as tougher cover glass, not scratch-proof, shatter-proof, or damage-proof glass.

Is Gorilla Armor 2 the same as a matte screen?

Gorilla Armor 2 is not equivalent to a heavily textured matte screen protector. Anti-reflective treatments reduce reflected light through the optical design or treatment of the surface, whereas matte protectors scatter reflected light more aggressively.

Surface type Primary benefit Typical trade-off
Gorilla Armor 2 Reduced reflections with a factory-installed glass-ceramic cover Reflections remain possible; the surface can still collect fingerprints and suffer damage
Glossy clear protector Replaceable protection with minimal texture May reintroduce reflections and partially mask the factory anti-reflective effect
Matte or anti-glare protector More diffuse reflections in harsh lighting Can add grain, softness, reduced apparent sharpness, or lower perceived contrast
Flexible clear film Light scratch protection with low added thickness Usually offers less impact protection than a rigid protector

“Anti-reflective” and “anti-glare” product labels are not enough to predict the result. A protector can reduce one type of reflection while changing clarity, touch response, or the feel of the S Pen. The safest approach is to check whether a specific protector is designed for the S25 Ultra and test its optical effect on the actual phone.

Does the Galaxy S25 Ultra still need a screen protector?

The Galaxy S25 Ultra does not automatically need a screen protector, but Gorilla Armor 2 does not make a protector unnecessary for every user. The decision depends on whether preserving the native display matters more than adding a replaceable protective layer.

Your priority More suitable choice Why
Maximum clarity, native touch feel, and the factory anti-reflective finish Use the bare display No additional layer can add its own reflections, texture, thickness, or S Pen friction.
Protection from light everyday scratches Thin clear film A flexible film can act as a sacrificial surface while changing the display less than many textured protectors.
Frequent exposure to tools, grit, or accidental impact Tempered-glass protector plus a case A replaceable rigid layer can provide an additional protection barrier, although it may alter optical performance.
Strong diffuse lighting and a willingness to accept image softness Anti-glare or matte protector Scattered reflections may be less distracting, but fine detail and perceived sharpness can suffer.

Skipping a protector makes sense for a careful owner who uses a case, avoids abrasive environments, and values the phone’s original glass feel. A protector remains sensible for people who carry the phone with sand, loose grit, tools, keys, or other objects; work in demanding environments; frequently use the phone without a case; or prefer replacing a scratched protector instead of risking the display.

The trade-off is particularly important on this phone. A glossy protector may bring back the reflections that Gorilla Armor 2 was designed to reduce. A matte protector may reduce glare more diffusely but make text or images look grainier. A clear protector may preserve sharpness better but still reduce the factory finish’s optical advantage. No protector category guarantees that the native viewing experience will remain unchanged.

How can you test Gorilla Armor 2’s anti-reflective effect?

You can perform a useful home comparison, but a home comparison is not a laboratory reflectance measurement. The test below helps determine whether the feature matters in your lighting and whether a protector changes the result.

  1. Clean the screen carefully with a clean microfiber cloth. Finger oils can create diffuse scattering and make the surface appear less clear.
  2. Open the same mostly dark image or dark-mode page for every comparison.
  3. Set a fixed brightness and disable adaptive brightness if you are comparing two setups.
  4. Look at the display near a window, beneath an overhead light, inside a car if safe to do so while parked, and outdoors.
  5. Keep the phone’s position, viewing angle, and distance from your eyes consistent.
  6. Compare how clearly you can see reflected windows, lamps, faces, and other bright shapes over the image.
  7. Repeat the comparison with and without the screen protector, if you are deciding whether to install one.

Do not rely on a phone camera alone. Camera exposure and processing can make one screen appear brighter or clearer than another, and a camera sensor may capture reflections differently from human vision. A consistent visual side-by-side is useful practical evidence, but it does not produce an exact reflectance percentage.

What does Gorilla Armor 2 not do?

Gorilla Armor 2 reduces reflections; it does not remove every reflection. The result still depends on brightness, viewing angle, sunlight direction, the content on screen, fingerprints, and any added protector.

  • It does not eliminate glare. Bright windows and direct sunlight can still appear on the display.
  • It does not make every viewing angle readable. Reflections change substantially as the phone moves relative to the light source.
  • It is not fingerprint-proof. Skin oils can make the surface look hazy and can scatter light.
  • It is not scratch-proof or crack-proof. Abrasive particles, impacts, chips, and drops can still damage the cover.
  • It does not replace a case. A case helps protect edges, corners, and the rear of the phone, areas that the front cover material cannot protect.
  • It is not a heavily textured matte finish. Users seeking maximum diffuse glare reduction may still prefer a matte protector, with the associated clarity trade-offs.

Is the Galaxy S25 Ultra worth buying for Gorilla Armor 2?

Gorilla Armor 2 is a meaningful display refinement for people who regularly fight reflections, but the feature alone is not a sufficient reason for every buyer to purchase or upgrade to the Galaxy S25 Ultra.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Galaxy S25 Ultra has a 6.9-inch QHD+ display with an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz, according to Business Standard’s review and Samsung corporate documentation. Gorilla Armor 2 complements those display specifications by addressing reflected ambient light, a problem that raw panel brightness cannot completely solve.

For U.S. buyers, Samsung’s March 2026 MSRP reference lists the 256GB Galaxy S25 Ultra at $1,299.99 and the 512GB model at $1,419.99. Samsung’s prices, promotions, inventory, storage availability, and carrier terms can change, so treat those figures as dated MSRP references rather than guaranteed August 2026 sale prices. The March 2026 Samsung U.S. MSRP file supports those reference prices.

The display treatment is a stronger buying reason for someone who reads, navigates, photographs, or works near bright windows and outdoors. It is a weaker reason for someone who mainly uses the phone indoors, plans to install a protector that changes the surface, prioritizes a lower price or smaller phone, or expects the material to prevent all damage. Galaxy S24 Ultra owners already have first-generation Gorilla Armor, so the upgrade case rests on the broader S25 Ultra package and the newer material’s claimed durability improvements—not on receiving anti-reflective behavior for the first time.

Choosing between bare glass and a protector

Choose the bare Galaxy S25 Ultra display if the factory anti-reflective finish, clear text, native touch response, and smooth S Pen feel are your highest priorities. Choose a thin clear film if light scratches are your main concern and you accept that even a clear layer can change reflections. Choose tempered glass when impact and scratch protection matter more than preserving the exact factory optical experience. Choose a matte protector only after accepting possible graininess and softness.

Before purchasing a protector, compare its finish, S Pen compatibility, touch sensitivity, case fit, installation method, replacement terms, and any explicit claim that it preserves anti-reflective performance. Product-level prices and independent comparisons vary, so do not assume that a product marketed as “clear,” “anti-glare,” or “premium” will preserve Gorilla Armor 2’s behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions

When did Gorilla Armor 2 debut?

Gorilla Armor 2 debuted on the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra in January 2025. Corning announced the material on January 22, 2025, while Samsung’s global newsroom version carries a January 23 Korea date.

Is Gorilla Armor 2 on every Galaxy S25 model?

The official announcement specifically identifies Gorilla Armor 2 on the front display of the Galaxy S25 Ultra. The announcement does not support assuming that every Galaxy S25 model uses the same cover material.

Does Gorilla Armor 2 eliminate screen reflections?

No. Gorilla Armor 2 is designed to reduce reflected ambient light, but bright windows, sunlight, fingerprints, viewing angle, display brightness, and screen protectors can still affect readability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can you use a screen protector with Gorilla Armor 2?

Yes, but a protector can change the factory display experience. A glossy protector may add reflections, while a matte protector may reduce glare at the cost of graininess, softness, or reduced perceived sharpness.

Is Gorilla Armor 2 scratch-proof or crack-proof?

No. Corning reports improved drop and scratch performance in its laboratory comparisons, but Gorilla Armor 2 can still be scratched, chipped, or cracked in real-world use.

The Bottom Line

Gorilla Armor 2 is a real but focused upgrade: the Galaxy S25 Ultra combines a factory-installed glass-ceramic cover with anti-reflective properties and Corning’s claimed durability improvements. The biggest everyday benefit is reduced distraction from reflected light, not a brighter panel or a reflection-free screen. Keep the native display bare if optical clarity is your priority; add a protector if your environment makes scratches or impacts more likely, and accept that the added layer may reduce some of the factory finish’s advantage.
