Anthropic’s Claude models are now available in Microsoft 365 Copilot as additional model choices, not replacements for OpenAI models. As of August 18, 2026, Claude support spans selected experiences such as Researcher, Copilot Studio, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Copilot Chat, Power Platform, and Copilot Cowork, but availability still depends on tenant, region, license, administrator settings, and release channel.
Microsoft’s Claude integration has changed significantly since the original September 24, 2025 announcement. The launch introduced Claude Opus 4.1 in Researcher and Claude Sonnet 4 plus Claude Opus 4.1 in Copilot Studio. Later Microsoft announcements added newer Claude models and additional Copilot surfaces, while Microsoft documentation clarified the separate data-residency and subprocessor implications.
Key takeaways
- Claude is an optional model family inside supported Microsoft Copilot experiences; Microsoft continues to offer OpenAI and other model choices.
- The September 24, 2025 launch added Claude Opus 4.1 to Researcher and Claude Sonnet 4 plus Claude Opus 4.1 to Copilot Studio.
- Microsoft later announced Claude Opus 4.7, Claude Opus 4.8, and the preview model Claude Fable 5, but model availability is not uniform across apps, tenants, regions, or release channels.
- Administrators manage Anthropic through Microsoft 365 admin center settings and, for Copilot Studio, Power Platform environment-level external-model controls.
- Microsoft documentation identifies Anthropic as a Microsoft subprocessor but says Anthropic model processing is currently outside the Microsoft EU Data Boundary.
- A separate Claude.ai subscription is not the same product as Claude inside Microsoft 365 Copilot, and Claude through Microsoft Foundry is a separate developer and billing route.
What did Microsoft originally announce about Claude in Microsoft 365 Copilot?
Microsoft originally announced Claude availability on September 24, 2025, as an expansion of model choice inside Microsoft 365 Copilot rather than a move away from OpenAI. The launch covered Claude Opus 4.1 in the Researcher agent and Claude Sonnet 4 plus Claude Opus 4.1 in Copilot Studio.

Where can users encounter Claude in Microsoft Copilot now?
As of August 18, 2026, Microsoft documents Anthropic model support across more Copilot and Power Platform experiences than the original launch covered. Documented surfaces include Researcher, Copilot Studio, Power Platform generative-response and external-model scenarios, Agent Mode in Excel, Copilot in Excel, Copilot in PowerPoint, Copilot in Word subject to rollout, Copilot Chat, and Copilot Cowork in applicable Frontier or preview environments.
Microsoft’s documentation for Anthropic models in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint specifically describes app-level behavior and notes that Word support was still being added in the cited May 2026 update. Microsoft’s later announcements describe model-specific rollout for Claude Opus 4.7 and Claude Opus 4.8.
“Available in Microsoft 365 Copilot” does not mean that every Copilot user can select Claude in every Office application. Microsoft stages features by tenant, geography, release channel, license, enrollment program, and model, so the model list visible to one organization may differ from the model list visible to another organization.
| Copilot or Microsoft surface | Documented Claude status | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Researcher | Claude models can be available through a model picker | Model selection can differ when Researcher is invoked from ordinary Copilot chat |
| Copilot Studio | Anthropic models can be selected for agents and orchestration | Microsoft 365 and Power Platform administrator controls both matter |
| Excel | Claude support documented, including Agent Mode and later model rollouts | Exact model and release channel vary |
| PowerPoint | Claude support documented | Exact model and rollout timing vary by tenant |
| Word | Support was being added in Microsoft’s May 2026 documentation | Do not assume support is present in every tenant |
| Copilot Chat | Newer Claude model rollouts announced | Availability depends on tenant and release channel |
| Copilot Cowork | Claude Opus 4.7, Opus 4.8, and selected preview models announced | Frontier, early-release, or private-preview limits may apply |
| Power Platform | External Anthropic models can support generative-response scenarios | Environment-level external-model rules and compliance limits apply |
Which Claude models are available in Microsoft 365 Copilot?
The Claude model list is no longer limited to the two model versions announced in September 2025. Microsoft later announced Claude Opus 4.7 and Claude Opus 4.8, and Microsoft also announced Claude Fable 5 as a preview model in selected experiences.
| Model | Availability history | What the status means |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Sonnet 4 | Copilot Studio launch model in September 2025 | Selectable in applicable Copilot Studio scenarios, subject to current tenant controls |
| Claude Opus 4.1 | Researcher and Copilot Studio launch model in September 2025 | Original Claude model choice; current exposure depends on the feature and rollout |
| Claude Opus 4.7 | Announced April 16, 2026 | Announced for Copilot Cowork, Copilot Studio early release, and Excel rollout; not proof of universal availability |
| Claude Opus 4.8 | Announced May 28, 2026 | Announced for Copilot Cowork and rollout to Copilot Chat, Excel, PowerPoint, and Copilot Studio |
| Claude Fable 5 | Announced as a preview model in 2026 | Default-off in Copilot Cowork with selected private previews; not a general production guarantee |
The Claude Fable 5 announcement and the Opus 4.7 and Opus 4.8 announcements identify rollout states, not a promise that every model appears in every Microsoft 365 tenant. Region, release channel, Frontier or early-release participation, licensing, capacity, and staged deployment can all change the visible model list.
How does Claude work in Microsoft 365 Copilot Researcher?
Claude in Researcher is intended for complex, multi-step research rather than replacing the entire Microsoft 365 Copilot model stack. In the dedicated Researcher experience, users can select an available model from the Researcher model picker.
Microsoft’s Researcher FAQ warns that model selection may be disabled when Researcher is added to a regular Copilot chat outside the dedicated Researcher agent experience. That path can use automatic model selection instead of exposing the same manual controls.

- Anti-Sink BIFMA Certified Gas Cylinder – A common failure in budget chairs: the pneumatic cylinder loses pressure and slowly sinks during use. Our Class 3 BIFMA-certified gas lift is built to hold its height reliably, so your chair stays exactly where you set it—year after year. No more sudden drops or mid-work adjustments
- Heavy-Duty Metal Core Base (330 lbs Capacity) – Thin plastic bases can crack under stress, especially near the cylinder hub. We use a reinforced nylon base with a metal core, providing the durability and peace of mind you need. Smooth-rolling, 360° silent casters glide across hardwood, tile, or carpet without scratching or catching
Researcher can combine work content, Microsoft Graph-connected information, connectors, and web research tools, depending on the tenant and configuration. A Claude-backed research result still requires human review. Users should check the cited sources, confirm that sources actually support the claims, and avoid treating model selection as a guarantee of factual accuracy.
How does Claude work in Copilot Studio?
Copilot Studio lets makers choose among supported model families for custom agents, orchestration, and prompt-building workflows. A maker may use Anthropic for one specialized task and use OpenAI or an Azure Model Catalog model for another, creating a multi-model design instead of routing every task to one provider.
Microsoft describes this model-mixing approach in its model-choice announcement. The practical benefit is optionality: a team can test different models for research, drafting, reasoning, coding, workflow automation, or tool orchestration against its own prompts.
Copilot Studio external models need both organization-level and environment-level administration. Microsoft’s documentation warns that preview or experimental external models can have limited capacity, slowdowns, timeouts, incomplete support, or future removal. A preview model should not automatically be placed in a production agent without an explicit risk review.
How do administrators enable or disable Claude?
Administrators generally need to manage Anthropic in the Microsoft 365 admin center before Copilot Studio environment controls become usable. The exact labels and role requirements can change during Microsoft’s phased rollout, so administrators should compare the tenant interface with Microsoft’s current documentation.
Microsoft 365 admin center
- Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center.
- Open Copilot → Settings.
- Open the page for AI providers operating as Microsoft subprocessors.
- Review the Anthropic setting and enable or disable the connection according to the organization’s policy.
Microsoft introduced the newer subprocessor configuration on December 8, 2025, and the newer configuration became effective January 7, 2026, according to Microsoft’s Anthropic subprocessor documentation. Microsoft identifies global administrator access for disabling the connection and an AI Administrator role for certain app-specific settings. Role requirements can vary by control.
Power Platform admin center for Copilot Studio
- Open the Power Platform admin center.
- Select the relevant environment or environment group.
- Open Rules or the external-model settings.
- Enable Anthropic under External Models.
- Save and publish the rule when the interface requires publication.
If the Power Platform external-model control is visible but unavailable, Microsoft says Anthropic may not yet be enabled in the Microsoft 365 admin center. The Power Platform administration documentation explains the environment-level control and its restrictions.

App-specific settings
Microsoft also documents app-specific Anthropic controls for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Organizations in the EU, EFTA, and UK should pay particular attention to those settings because Microsoft says Anthropic processing for the affected app experiences occurs outside the Microsoft EU Data Boundary. The setting may therefore be a governance decision, not merely a feature switch.
Why might the Claude model picker be missing?
The Claude model picker may be missing because Anthropic is disabled at the Microsoft 365 organization level, external models are disabled in the Copilot Studio environment, the user lacks the applicable license, the feature is unavailable in the tenant’s region, or the model is restricted to Frontier, early release, private preview, or a specific application.
Researcher can also behave differently depending on how Researcher is opened. The dedicated Researcher agent can expose model selection, while Researcher invoked from an ordinary Copilot chat may use automatic selection. A missing picker is therefore not conclusive evidence that the tenant has no Claude access.
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Recommended action |
|---|---|---|
| Anthropic setting is absent | Tenant rollout, region, cloud type, or administrator role | Check Microsoft’s current subprocessor documentation and confirm the administrator account |
| External Models control is disabled | Microsoft 365 admin center prerequisite | Enable or review Anthropic at the organization level first |
| Researcher has no model picker | Invocation path or feature availability | Open the dedicated Researcher experience and check the Researcher FAQ behavior |
| One user sees Claude but another does not | License, rollout ring, app, or preview enrollment | Compare tenant, user license, release channel, and feature assignment |
| Agent times out or responds slowly | Preview capacity or external-model availability | Test production-supported options and review the model’s preview status |
What are the privacy, compliance, and data-residency implications?
The largest enterprise issue is not simply whether Claude performs well; the largest issue is where Anthropic-backed processing occurs and which contractual and regional commitments apply. Microsoft’s current documentation identifies Anthropic as a Microsoft subprocessor operating under Microsoft contractual safeguards and the Microsoft Data Protection Addendum, while also stating that Anthropic models are currently excluded from Microsoft EU Data Boundary commitments.
“Microsoft subprocessor” does not mean that Anthropic processing occurs entirely inside Microsoft’s own infrastructure. Organizations must review the applicable Microsoft subprocessor and data-boundary documentation, Microsoft Product Terms, the Data Protection Addendum, regional commitments, retention terms, and feature-specific documentation before enabling Claude.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Governance question | Current documented implication |
|---|---|
| Is Anthropic treated as a Microsoft subprocessor? | Yes, Microsoft documents Anthropic as a subprocessor under Microsoft terms and the Data Protection Addendum. |
| Does Anthropic processing stay inside the Microsoft EU Data Boundary? | No. Microsoft currently excludes Anthropic models from EU Data Boundary commitments. |
| Are government and sovereign clouds universally supported? | No. Anthropic support may be unavailable in government, sovereign, GCC, GCC High, and DoD environments. |
| Does Copilot Studio provide FedRAMP for Anthropic models? | Microsoft’s Power Platform documentation says FedRAMP is not achieved for Anthropic models in Copilot Studio. |
| Can Copilot Studio Anthropic models handle payment-card data under PCI DSS? | Microsoft’s Power Platform documentation says PCI DSS is not applicable to Anthropic models in Copilot Studio for storing, processing, or transmitting payment-card data. |
| Are all regional controls identical? | No. EU, EFTA, and UK tenants can have different defaults and app-specific administrator settings. |
Existing EU, EFTA, and UK tenants that opted into older Anthropic terms may need to opt in again under the newer configuration. Microsoft says most commercial-cloud customers are handled differently during the newer subprocessor rollout, but phased deployment means tenant behavior can differ.
Do not make a blanket assumption that Microsoft 365 Copilot’s normal processing boundary applies identically to every Anthropic-backed experience. Security and legal teams should test the exact feature, region, cloud, data category, retention policy, and contractual terms involved.

Does Claude replace OpenAI models in Microsoft 365 Copilot?
Claude does not replace OpenAI models in Microsoft 365 Copilot. Claude is an additional model option in supported experiences, and Microsoft continues to provide OpenAI and other model choices.
Some Copilot surfaces expose a model picker, while other surfaces use automatic model selection. Even when Claude is enabled for a tenant, users do not necessarily choose Claude for every Copilot interaction. Feature behavior also differs between Researcher, Copilot Chat, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Copilot Studio, Copilot Cowork, and Power Platform.

| Question | Claude option | OpenAI or automatic option |
|---|---|---|
| Is the model always user-selectable? | No; selection depends on the Copilot surface and invocation path. | Some experiences use automatic selection or expose other model choices. |
| Does enabling Claude change every Copilot response? | No; Claude is supported only in applicable experiences and configurations. | OpenAI models remain available where Microsoft provides them. |
| Can a custom agent use more than one model family? | Yes, Copilot Studio supports multi-model scenarios where the applicable models are enabled. | OpenAI and Azure Model Catalog models can be part of the same broader design. |
| Is one model universally better? | No reliable universal conclusion follows from the integration announcement. | Organizations should compare models on representative workloads. |
What does Claude add to Microsoft 365 Copilot?
Claude adds model diversity inside Microsoft’s existing productivity and agent ecosystem. Organizations may use Claude to compare behavior on deep research, complex reasoning, drafting, coding, specialized prompts, workflow automation, or agent orchestration, but model selection does not guarantee better accuracy, lower latency, lower cost, or stronger security.
Multi-model routing can reduce dependence on a single model provider and let Copilot Studio makers assign different tasks to different model families. A useful pilot should measure factual accuracy, citation quality, latency, failure rate, tool-use behavior, cost or capacity impact, and policy compliance using real organizational prompts.
Claude remains a generative model. Human review is required for consequential outputs, including financial analysis, legal material, medical content, security decisions, customer communications, and actions that modify business systems.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Claude inside Microsoft 365 Copilot included with a Claude subscription?
Claude inside Microsoft 365 Copilot, Claude in Copilot Studio, Claude through Microsoft Foundry, and Claude.ai are separate products and buying decisions. A Claude.ai subscription does not automatically unlock Claude inside Microsoft 365 Copilot, and a Microsoft 365 Copilot license does not mean that every Claude model or unlimited Claude usage is included.
| Route | Primary purpose | What controls access | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude in Microsoft 365 Copilot | End-user productivity, research, and Office-connected Copilot experiences | Microsoft 365 licensing, tenant settings, region, feature rollout, and applicable Microsoft terms | Organizations already standardized on Microsoft 365 |
| Claude in Copilot Studio | Custom agents, orchestration, prompt building, and workflow automation | Copilot Studio licensing, Microsoft 365 enablement, Power Platform environment controls, and model status | Teams building internal agents in the Microsoft ecosystem |
| Claude through Microsoft Foundry | API-based application and enterprise-agent development | Azure deployment, agreements, authentication, model availability, and usage billing | Developers needing APIs, SDKs, deployment, and monitoring controls |
| Claude.ai | Direct Anthropic chatbot and team product | Anthropic plan and account terms | Individuals or teams that do not need Microsoft Graph or Office integration |
Anthropic says Claude is available through Microsoft Foundry using serverless deployment, Azure agreements, and standard API pricing for the Foundry integration. The Anthropic Foundry announcement describes a developer route, not the licensing model for Claude inside Microsoft 365 Copilot.

Should your organization enable Claude?
Organizations should enable Claude when model diversity, specialized task routing, or comparative testing offers a clear benefit and security and legal teams accept Anthropic’s applicable processing terms. Organizations should not enable Claude merely because a newer model name appears in the Copilot interface.
Claude is a reasonable candidate when:
- The organization already uses Microsoft 365 Copilot and wants additional model choice inside existing workflows.
- Copilot Studio makers need to compare Anthropic, OpenAI, and Azure models for specialized agent tasks.
- Teams have demanding research, reasoning, drafting, coding, or orchestration workloads that justify a controlled comparison.
- The organization wants to reduce reliance on a single model provider.
- Security, privacy, procurement, and legal teams have approved Anthropic as a Microsoft subprocessor for the applicable region and feature.
Proceed cautiously when:
- The organization requires strict EU Data Boundary or in-country processing guarantees.
- The tenant uses a government, sovereign, GCC, GCC High, or DoD cloud environment.
- The workflow handles payment-card data or other regulated information that cannot be sent to an external model provider.
- The team is considering a preview or experimental model for production use.
- Users assume that every Copilot response will use Claude.
- Data retention, contractual terms, cross-border processing, or audit requirements remain unresolved.
When is Microsoft Foundry a better choice?
Microsoft Foundry is usually the better route when the goal is to build a custom application or production agent rather than give users a model choice inside Microsoft 365. Foundry provides a developer-oriented route with Azure integration, Microsoft Entra authentication, deployment workflows, and application-level responsibility for architecture, evaluation, monitoring, security, and model costs.
When is direct Claude a better choice?
Direct Claude is usually the simpler route when users want an individual or team chatbot and do not need Microsoft Graph, Office files, Teams data, or Microsoft 365 tenant governance. Direct Claude does not automatically provide Microsoft 365 Copilot integration.
A practical pilot checklist
- Inventory the exact surfaces. Decide whether the pilot covers Researcher, Copilot Chat, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Copilot Studio, Power Platform, or Copilot Cowork.
- Confirm eligibility. Check the tenant’s commercial or government cloud, region, license, release channel, Frontier or preview enrollment, and model-specific rollout.
- Review governance. Examine Microsoft Product Terms, the Data Protection Addendum, subprocessor documentation, retention terms, and regional processing commitments.
- Enable the organization control. Review Anthropic under Copilot → Settings → AI providers operating as Microsoft subprocessors in the Microsoft 365 admin center.
- Configure the environment. For Copilot Studio, enable Anthropic under the relevant Power Platform environment’s External Models rule when permitted.
- Use representative prompts. Test realistic research, drafting, spreadsheet, presentation, coding, and agent-orchestration tasks.
- Measure more than answer quality. Record accuracy, citation quality, latency, timeouts, tool actions, capacity behavior, cost implications, and policy violations.
- Keep human approval. Require review before consequential outputs are distributed or actions are taken in connected systems.
- Recheck availability. Microsoft’s model list and rollout status can change by feature, region, and release channel.
Bottom line: what does Claude availability mean for Microsoft 365 Copilot?
Anthropic’s Claude models are now available in Microsoft 365 Copilot as a growing set of optional models across selected research, Office, chat, agent, and Power Platform experiences. The integration is model optionality inside Microsoft’s ecosystem, not a universal replacement for OpenAI and not a standalone Claude application embedded identically in every Microsoft 365 product.
For most enterprises, the decisive question is governance rather than a simple Claude-versus-OpenAI winner. Organizations should verify their own tenant’s model list, licensing, release channel, regional processing, subprocessor terms, and compliance requirements before enabling Claude, then validate Claude against representative workloads through a controlled pilot.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can every Microsoft 365 Copilot user select Claude?
No. Claude selection depends on the Copilot surface, tenant, region, license, administrator settings, release channel, and sometimes Frontier, early-release, or preview enrollment. Some Copilot experiences also use automatic model selection instead of a visible model picker.
Does Claude replace OpenAI in Microsoft 365 Copilot?
No. Claude is an additional model family in supported Copilot experiences, while Microsoft continues to offer OpenAI and other model choices. Enabling Claude does not force every Copilot interaction to use Claude.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Is Claude processing inside Microsoft’s EU Data Boundary?
Microsoft currently says Anthropic models are excluded from Microsoft EU Data Boundary commitments. Organizations in the EU, EFTA, and UK should review the applicable regional and app-specific administrator settings before enabling Anthropic-backed experiences.
Do I need a separate Claude.ai subscription to use Claude in Microsoft 365 Copilot?
No separate Claude.ai subscription is automatically required for Claude inside Microsoft 365 Copilot, but access depends on Microsoft licensing, tenant controls, feature rollout, and applicable terms. A Claude.ai subscription is a separate product and does not automatically unlock Microsoft 365 Copilot integration.
Is Claude Opus 4.8 available in every Microsoft 365 Copilot tenant?
No. Microsoft announced Claude Opus 4.8 for Copilot Cowork and rollout to Copilot Chat, Excel, PowerPoint, and Copilot Studio, but the announcement does not establish universal availability. Tenant, region, release channel, licensing, capacity, and staged rollout can affect access.
