No. Anthem never supported cross-play or cross-progression between PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. It did offer co-op for up to four players, but only within the same platform family. That distinction is now historical: EA shut down the official servers on 12 January 2026, and because the game was designed to be online-only, it can no longer be played through its official service.
Does Anthem support cross-play?
No. Anthem never let players on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC join one another’s sessions. There was no later patch that added the feature, and the official online service has now closed.
Cross-play, also called cross-platform play, means players using different platforms can enter the same multiplayer session. It is separate from co-op: a game can let several people play together without allowing them to use different platforms. Anthem did the latter, not the former. A PS4 player could not join a friend on Xbox One or PC, and an Xbox One player could not join a PC player.

Executive producer Mark Darrah wrote on Twitter on 22 June 2018, “No plans for crossplay at launch.” In November, when asked about play between PC, Xbox One, and PS4, his answer was “Not at launch.” Producer Ben Irving also reportedly answered “Not at launch” in January 2019.

Lead producer Mike Gamble gave a more hopeful answer in a Game Informer interview published 25 January 2019: “We’re in the “pro” column. We want to do it. It’s just not going to be there for launch.” He said BioWare wanted players to be able to play with friends on other consoles and confirmed that PC-to-console play was part of the idea. But he described an intention and future investigation—not a release feature or a guarantee. Cross-play never arrived.
That distinction matters when reading old launch coverage or interviews. “Not at launch” left open the possibility of a later update at the time; it did not mean the game had cross-play, or that it would definitely receive it. BioWare ended new development in 2021, and the official servers went offline in 2026. Neither the promised investigation nor a later release produced official cross-play.
Is Anthem cross platform between PS4 and Xbox?
No. PS4 and Xbox One players could not play together. Both consoles had Anthem, but owning the same game on different platforms did not put players into a shared multiplayer pool.

The game launched worldwide on 22 February 2019 for PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One. Those were separate platform communities. The Legion of Dawn Edition was a premium edition that included the Legion of Dawn Armor Pack; it did not change the platform restriction or unlock cross-play.
Do not confuse a console’s ability to run an older game with cross-play. The game’s backward-compatibility behavior on PS5 or Xbox Series consoles was not established here, and no native PS5 or Xbox Series version was identified. In any case, backward compatibility within a console family would not connect PlayStation players to Xbox or PC players. It would not create a cross-play feature the game did not have.
Can PS4 and Xbox play Anthem together?
No. A PS4 player and an Xbox One player could not form a squad or share a mission, even if they both owned the game and were online at the same time.

Anthem used platform-specific account ecosystems: Origin (later the EA App) on PC, PlayStation Network on PS4, and Xbox Live on Xbox One. Cross-play would have required a way to connect those ecosystems inside the game. That integration was never completed. Changing a console’s privacy or cross-play settings cannot add a feature that the game itself never implemented.
There is no official workaround through the Legion of Dawn Edition, a different edition, a shared publisher account, or a settings toggle. The edition affected bundled items, not which platform could join a session. A shared account login also did not make a PlayStation or Xbox character available on another platform.
Does Anthem have cross-progression?
No. Anthem did not support cross-progression, so a player could not carry a character, Javelins, loot, unlocks, or other game progress from one platform to another.
Cross-progression is distinct from cross-play. Cross-play connects players in multiplayer sessions; cross-progression lets a player’s progress follow an account between platforms, sometimes called cross-save when the save data itself moves. A game can have one feature without the other. Anthem shipped with neither.
Darrah said on Twitter on 13 October 2018, “We will not get this for launch.” Gamble explained the technical idea in the January 2019 Game Informer interview: “That is actually easier than crossplay. The way it all works is that there is a local save file, but that’s not really not where everything is stored. Everything stored is on your account. Allowing you to access that stuff on another platform is actually easier to solve. But still, not for launch.” Although he described account-based storage as making cross-save easier to solve than cross-play, it still did not ship.

As a result, progress made on PC did not continue on a console, and a console character did not transfer to another console family or PC. Signing into the same publisher account should not be treated as proof that a character or inventory will sync across platforms. The account system and the feature that exposes progress across platforms are not the same thing.

Can I play Anthem on PC and then continue my progress on a console?
No. PC and console progress were separate, and Anthem had no official cross-save or cross-progression system to move a character between them.
If you played on more than one platform, each platform had its own progress. There was no supported transfer process for a Freelancer, Javelins, equipment, or unlocks. This was true even though Gamble said that, technically, accessing account-stored data on another platform seemed easier to solve than cross-play. His comment was about a possible approach, not an implemented service.
Today, the shutdown makes the practical answer even more definitive: official servers no longer provide access to the game. A prior purchase or an installed copy does not restore an online character or enable a transfer. Do not assume that a used disc, a library listing, or signing into an account will bring back the official online features.
Could Anthem co-op work across platforms?
No. Co-op was real, but it was same-platform co-op: a squad could include up to four players total, meaning one player and as many as three friends, as long as they were in the same platform community.
That was the game’s central multiplayer setup. EA’s PS4 product description invited players to “Join with up to three friends to explore vast ruins, battle deadly enemies, and claim otherworldly artifacts.” The four-player limit did not mean four people could come from any combination of platforms. A PS4 Freelancer could squad with other PS4 players, not with Xbox One or PC players.
At launch, the playable activities included story missions, Freeplay, Strongholds, and other matchmade activities. Once out in the world, players could encounter others and team up through matchmaking. Fort Tarsis was a local social space rather than the same kind of shared mission environment. According to Gamble’s launch-era comments, non-intro missions had matchmaking, and a private dedicated-server option allowed a player to play solo. Those descriptions concern the game as it existed while the official service was operating; they do not describe a service available now.

In short, Anthem offered multiplayer co-op, but not cross-platform co-op. The word “co-op” answers whether players could participate together; it does not answer whether players on different devices could do so. For Anthem, the answer to the first was yes (up to four on one platform), and the answer to the second was no.

BioWare expressed interest in both features, but it never released either one. The studio later stopped new development on Anthem, ending the realistic path to adding them as official features.
After a difficult live-service year, BioWare announced a substantial reinvention effort in February 2020, often referred to by fans as Anthem NEXT. On 24 February 2021, BioWare Austin studio director Christian Dailey wrote on the BioWare Blog: “we’ve made the difficult decision to stop our new development work on Anthem (aka Anthem NEXT). We will, however, continue to keep the Anthem live service running as it exists today.” He said the studio needed to focus on Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and Star Wars: The Old Republic.
Continuing the live service in its existing form was not the same as continuing feature development. The planned reinvention was not released, and its cancellation did not add cross-play or cross-progression to the existing game. There is no basis for treating the original comments about future investigation as a feature announcement.

No—not through EA’s official service. EA and the BioWare team announced on 3 July 2025, “After careful consideration, we will be sunsetting Anthem on January 12, 2026.” The shutdown has taken place.
EA’s announcement said, “Game servers will be available until January 12, 2026 at which time the game will no longer be playable.” It also explained, “Anthem was designed to be an online-only title so once the servers go offline, the game will no longer be playable.” That means the official game cannot be played simply by launching an installed copy without the servers. A disc or a game icon in a library is not a way to restore the service.

EA also said that existing owners could download a prior purchase until shutdown, that sales of premium currency stopped on 3 July 2025, and that remaining coins could be spent until the sunset. Anthem was to leave the EA Play playlist on 15 August 2025. These were sunset-period details; they do not keep the game available after the server closure. The official announcement said the sunset would not cause BioWare layoffs.
Reports after the closure described a fan-made patch and private-server activity. Those are not official EA or BioWare servers, and their availability, legality, and technical reliability are not established here. They do not restore official cross-play, cross-progression, or support, and should not be treated as an endorsed or stable way to play. No how-to for connecting to such services is appropriate as a substitute for the now-closed official game.
What does this mean if you own Anthem?
It means the old platform questions have clear historical answers, but no official multiplayer service remains to use those features. Before shutdown, you could play co-op with up to three other people on your platform, but you could not play across platform families or carry progress between them. Since 12 January 2026, official online play itself is unavailable.

For buyers considering a used copy, the shutdown is the most important fact: a physical copy may be a collectible, but it does not restore the online game. The official service and storefront paths are closed for this title. Do not purchase on the assumption that a copy will let you play the live game with friends.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will Anthem ever have crossplay?
There is no official cross-play feature or announced official plan to add one. BioWare stopped new development in 2021, and EA closed the official servers on 12 January 2026.
Can I fix Anthem cross-play by changing console privacy settings?
No. Privacy settings can limit access to features a game supports, but they cannot add cross-play to a game that never implemented it. Anthem’s platform communities were separate.
