Antbo is a strong choice for children who want to build a robot and then experiment with sensors and movement, but it is not an unqualified “best” buy. The kit’s bionic insect design, five interactive sensors, autonomous behaviors and phone controls make the build-and-test cycle unusually hands-on. The decisive drawback in 2026 is availability: DFRobot marks model ROB0140 as retired and no longer sells it through its catalog. Treat any remaining listing as used or residual stock and verify its contents, app support and return policy before paying.
Antbo at a glance
| Item | What is documented |
|---|---|
| Type | Assembling bionic insect robot kit |
| Controller | ATMEGA328P CPU |
| Wireless and wired connections | Bluetooth 4.0 and high-speed USB |
| Assembled size | 223 × 126 × 150 mm, according to DFRobot’s current product specification |
| Interaction hardware | Nearly a dozen sensors in the overall design, including five interactive sensors listed in the feature description |

| Official status | DFRobot identifies SKU ROB0140 as discontinued and retired from its catalog |
The product is best understood as a robotics project rather than a conventional remote-control toy. A child assembles the mechanism, powers it, observes how sensor inputs change its behavior and uses a phone to try different control modes. That sequence is the reason to choose Antbo. If the priority is instant play, guaranteed replacement parts or current manufacturer support, a currently sold kit is a safer category.
What the Antbo kit actually teaches
DFRobot describes Antbo as an assembling bionic robot. The body and legs are intended to illustrate how an insect-inspired mechanism moves, while the electronics turn sensor readings into actions. The product description refers to an artificial neural network, an optimized gait algorithm and multisensor information fusion. Those terms do not mean a child is training a modern machine-learning model; they describe the control system that combines inputs and selects movement patterns.
Recommended Free Tools
The educational value comes from making a visible connection between cause and effect. A learner can change the robot’s surroundings, activate an input, watch a response and then compare that result with a different mode. This is more concrete than reading about feedback or autonomous behavior in isolation. It also creates natural questions about calibration, traction, battery voltage and why the same command behaves differently on different floors.

The historical Indiegogo campaign said assembly takes less than an hour and teaches basic principles of robotics and coding. That is a useful expectation for a first session, not a guarantee for every child: sorting parts, interpreting diagrams and correcting a misplaced connector can extend the build. Younger children generally benefit when an adult handles the checklist and lets them perform the safe, repetitive assembly tasks.
How Antbo moves and senses its environment
Bionic leg motion
Antbo’s insect-like body uses a programmed gait rather than wheels. The optimized gait algorithm coordinates leg movements so the robot can walk, turn and respond to commands. Legged movement gives the learner more to observe than a two-wheel chassis, but it also makes floor choice and assembly accuracy more important. A slightly misaligned linkage or a surface with poor grip can appear to be a software fault when the mechanical cause is responsible.
Interactive sensors and information fusion
DFRobot lists five interactive sensors and describes nearly a dozen sensors in the complete design. The controller combines these inputs through multisensor information fusion, allowing Antbo to react to more than one condition instead of relying on a single switch. Exploration mode can display sensor data in real time, which is useful for demonstrating that a robot does not “see” a room like a person; it receives changing numerical or state inputs and applies programmed rules.

Autonomous behavior
Autonomous motion is one of the kit’s defining features. In an autonomous mode, the robot makes movement decisions from its programmed logic and sensor readings rather than waiting for every leg command from the phone. Keep the distinction clear for children: autonomous does not mean generally intelligent or able to learn any task. It means the installed control system can select a response without a continuous manual command.
Phone controls and the three app modes
DFRobot says the Antbo app provides an intuitive interface with three modes. A compatible phone connects over Bluetooth; the robot does not require a Wi-Fi network for the control link.
Remote control
Remote-control mode sends movement commands from on-screen controls. It is the quickest way to check whether assembly, batteries and Bluetooth are working. Start with short forward, reverse and turning commands on a clear, dry floor. If one leg drags or the robot veers sharply, stop and inspect the mechanical assembly before assuming the app is at fault.

Line following
Line-following mode uses the robot’s sensors to detect and follow a high-contrast route. Use a smooth, hard surface and a clearly defined line; fuzzy edges, patterned carpets and reflective or uneven flooring can make the sensor signal ambiguous. Build the simplest loop first, then alter one variable at a time so a child can identify whether a failure came from the track, lighting or robot setup.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Voice control
Voice-control mode accepts spoken commands through the phone. Speech recognition is listed as a feature, but the available command vocabulary and language support can depend on the app version and phone operating system. Test the commands in a quiet room and treat voice control as an experiment, not as a guaranteed hands-free interface in a noisy environment.
Exploration and sensor readouts
The feature description says exploration can show sensor data in real time. Use that display to ask a measurable question: what value changes when an object is placed in front of the robot, or when the robot crosses the edge of a line? Recording observations in a notebook turns free play into a small experiment without requiring a separate coding environment.
Power, runtime and operating range
Battery requirement
Antbo requires four AAA batteries, which are not included. The campaign recommends rechargeable cells. Check the polarity markings and use four cells of the same type and charge level; mixing old and new batteries can produce weak or erratic movement. Keep a spare charged set available because troubleshooting with nearly depleted batteries can lead to misleading Bluetooth or gait symptoms.
How long it runs
The historical campaign FAQ gives a theoretical continuous runtime of two to three hours. It explicitly says the result varies with use and environment. Frequent turning, heavier mechanical resistance, repeated voice processing and a rough surface can consume more power than gentle movement on a smooth floor. Consider the figure a planning range rather than a timed guarantee for every battery set.
Bluetooth distance
The same campaign reports a control distance of 15 metres without walls or barriers. Furniture, people, other radio devices and the orientation of the phone can reduce practical range. For a first test, keep the phone close; only evaluate distance after the robot responds reliably at short range.

Where Antbo can and cannot operate
The campaign says Antbo can navigate most hard surfaces. Dry indoor floors, finished wood, tile and similar smooth areas are sensible starting points. The same source warns that hairy, furry and very rocky surfaces are unsuitable. Hair and fibres can catch in moving parts, while rocks can prevent the legs from finding a stable gait.
Antbo is not water resistant. Keep it away from spills, wet floors, sinks and outdoor conditions where rain or damp grass is possible. Disconnect power and stop using the robot if liquid reaches the electronics; do not assume it can be dried safely without inspection.
| Environment | Practical expectation |
|---|---|
| Dry, smooth indoor floor | Best starting environment for assembly checks and app testing |
| Most other hard surfaces | Generally supported, but traction and lighting can change behavior |
| Hairy or furry carpet | Not recommended; fibres can interfere with the legs and sensors |
| Very rocky or loose ground | Not recommended because the gait may lose stable contact |
| Water, wet floor or rain | Do not use; the campaign states that Antbo is not water resistant |
What you need before assembly
- The Antbo kit with its mechanical parts, electronics and assembly instructions.
- Four AAA batteries or four compatible rechargeable AAA cells; they are not supplied with the kit.
- A Bluetooth-capable phone that can install and run the current Antbo app available for your operating system.
- A clean, dry, hard work area and a separate clear floor for the first walking test.
- Enough uninterrupted time to sort parts, assemble the mechanism and test one function at a time.
Because ROB0140 is retired, do not assume a residual listing contains every original item. Ask the seller to confirm the model number, manual, battery holder, cables, sensors and any parts that are specific to the kit. A missing structural piece can be harder to replace than a standard battery.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAssembly and first-run procedure
The exact screw and connector sequence belongs to the manual supplied with your unit. The following workflow prevents common first-run mistakes without inventing a different assembly method.
- Inventory the package. Compare the physical parts with the manual before fastening anything. Photograph the contents if you bought residual stock so a return claim has a clear record.
- Sort mechanical parts. Separate legs, body pieces, fasteners and electronic modules. Keep similar screws in labeled groups; using a screw in the wrong location can restrict a joint.
- Build the frame in the manual’s order. Do not force a connector or tighten a joint until it binds. The bionic gait depends on the legs moving freely and symmetrically.
- Install the electronics and sensors. Route cables as shown so they cannot contact moving legs. Check each plug’s orientation before applying pressure.
- Inspect the completed mechanism. Confirm that the body is level, both sides have comparable clearance and no wire is trapped under a joint.
- Insert four matching AAA cells. Follow the polarity markings and close the battery compartment securely.
- Wake the robot and test locally. Place it on a dry hard floor and use the simplest movement command before trying line or voice control.
- Pair the phone. Follow the app’s Bluetooth procedure while keeping the phone close to Antbo. Avoid changing several phone settings at once so the cause of a connection problem remains visible.
- Try one mode at a time. Verify remote control first, then line following and voice control. Record what changes when you alter the surface, lighting or track.
Fixing Android connection problems
DFRobot’s wiki documents a specific Android recovery sequence. Use it in order rather than repeatedly tapping the pairing button.
- Close the Antbo app completely.
- Disable Wi-Fi on the phone.
- Enable Bluetooth.
- Touch Antbo’s head for three seconds to wake it.
- Keep the phone close to the robot.
- Reopen the Antbo app and attempt the connection again.
- If it still fails, restart the phone and repeat the sequence.
Also check the simple causes: confirm that the batteries are charged, remove other phones that may already be connected, and make sure the robot is awake rather than sitting idle. If the app installs but does not communicate, compatibility may be the limiting factor, especially because the product is retired and its software support can age differently from a current phone operating system. A seller should be able to state which app version and phone platforms were recently tested; do not treat an unverified listing as supported merely because the hardware powers on.

Does Antbo require coding?
No coding is required to assemble the robot or use the documented app modes. Remote, line-following and voice control are intended to work through the app’s existing interface. The campaign’s claim that Antbo teaches basic coding principles refers to the way learners can connect inputs, rules and outputs; it does not establish that every retail unit includes a block-coding editor or a programmable development course.

For a child who is ready for more than button pressing, use the robot as a prompt for structured experiments: predict how a different line width will affect following, compare behavior on two hard floors, or chart how response changes as batteries discharge. More advanced programming projects should be attempted only if the particular unit’s documentation and software expose a supported development path. Do not promise Arduino-compatible lessons solely because the listed CPU is ATMEGA328P; the processor identification alone does not document a complete programming workflow for this product.
Is Antbo suitable for a seven-year-old?
There is no authoritative DFRobot age recommendation in the supplied specifications. A supplier listing shows age bands from 5–7 through 16–17, but that is supplier metadata, not a safety certification or a guarantee that every seven-year-old will find the build easy.
For a seven-year-old, suitability depends on three practical factors:
- Patience: assembly takes less than an hour in the campaign’s estimate, but sorting and correcting parts can take longer.
- Fine-motor ability: small fasteners, connectors and cable routing may need adult assistance.
- Troubleshooting tolerance: Bluetooth pairing, floor limitations and gait adjustments are part of the experience, not unusual exceptions.
An adult should supervise assembly, battery handling and the first walking tests. Choose Antbo for a child who enjoys building and asking why a machine behaves differently, not solely for a child who wants an immediate, frustration-free toy. The same guidance applies to older beginners who have never assembled an electronics kit.
Availability and how to evaluate a remaining listing
DFRobot explicitly states that Antbo has been retired and is no longer for sale in its catalog. A third-party retailer may still advertise it, but that can represent residual inventory, an open-box unit or a used kit. Availability therefore changes by seller and region, and a listing date is not proof that a complete, supported package remains in stock.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Before purchasing, ask the seller to confirm each point in writing:
- The exact model is ROB0140, not a similarly named insect robot.
- The kit is complete, with the original manual and all electronics, sensors, structural parts and cables.
- The four-AAA battery requirement is understood and batteries are either included or clearly excluded.
- The app can still be installed on the phone you intend to use, with the relevant operating-system version identified.
- The unit is new, open-box or used, and any prior assembly or repairs are disclosed.
- The return period, warranty and remedy for missing or defective parts are stated.
Do not pay a collector’s premium merely because a listing uses the word “best.” There is no independent comparative test, reliability statistic or review average establishing Antbo as the objectively best children’s robot. Its value is the particular combination of assembly, bionic movement and sensor experimentation.
How to compare Antbo with another children’s robot kit
A fair comparison should use the same questions for every candidate. Antbo’s documented position on each axis is shown below; information about another kit should be verified from that kit’s current manufacturer documentation.

Strengths and limitations that matter at purchase time
Strengths
- The child builds the mechanism instead of only operating a finished toy.
- Insect-inspired legs make gait, balance and traction visible learning topics.
- Sensor-driven autonomous behavior gives the build a clear experiment loop.
- Remote, line-following and voice modes offer different ways to test the same hardware.
- Real-time sensor readouts can turn play into observable data collection.
Limitations
- DFRobot has retired ROB0140, so official availability and long-term support are uncertain.
- Four AAA batteries are required but not included.
- The two-to-three-hour runtime and 15-metre range are historical theoretical figures affected by conditions.
- Hairy, furry and very rocky surfaces can prevent reliable navigation.
- Antbo is not water resistant.
- Residual listings may differ in completeness, app compatibility, warranty and return terms.
Who should buy Antbo?
Buy it when the child’s main goal is to assemble a moving machine, observe sensor behavior and troubleshoot a real mechanism, and when you have verified that the seller has a complete ROB0140 kit and a workable app path. It is particularly well matched to supervised family projects, introductory STEAM activities and classrooms that can provide a dry hard testing area.
Skip it when you need a currently supported product, guaranteed spare parts, a documented coding curriculum, water resistance or a toy that works instantly without assembly. In those cases, compare current kits using the same assembly, sensor, software, runtime, support and warranty criteria rather than relying on a “best robot” label.
