Kerry had already been charged with murdering Ann Widdecombe. Both charges are allegations; no verdict has been reported. As of 3 October 2026, his next stated court appearance was due on 7 October.
What has Joshua Kerry been charged with?
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) announced on 2 October 2026 that Kerry faces a charge of engaging in conduct in preparation of acts of terrorism, contrary to section 5(1)(a) of the Terrorism Act 2006. The CPS and Counter Terrorism Policing said the alleged conduct included acts against Nigel Farage MP. The public announcements do not set out a precise operational plan.
Kerry also faces one count of murdering former MP Ann Widdecombe, a charge announced by the CPS on 20 July. The murder charge and the terrorism-preparation charge are separate allegations. A charge is not a finding of fact or proof of guilt. The CPS announcement of the terrorism-preparation charge and its earlier announcement of the murder charge give the formal details.
What period does the terrorism charge cover?
The CPS says the alleged preparatory conduct took place from 31 May 2024 to 8 July 2026. Those dates describe the period specified in the charge; they do not establish that the alleged conduct happened or provide a proven chronology. The charge announcement names Farage among the alleged targets, but the agencies have not publicly detailed the specific acts alleged against him.

How did the investigation develop?
When Devon and Cornwall Police announced Kerry’s arrest on suspicion of murder on 11 July 2026, the force said it had no information suggesting terrorism or political motivation. That was an early account of the investigation. On 20 July, when the CPS announced the murder charge, Chief Crown Prosecutor Frank Ferguson said police enquiries into motive were ongoing, “including a potential political or terrorist connection.” The later preparation-of-terrorist-acts charge reflects a subsequent development; the sequence does not establish a particular motive. The police statement after the arrest and the CPS statement on the murder charge document those earlier updates.
There was also a separate investigative development. On 7 August, Counter Terrorism Policing said it had reopened an investigation into a reported attempted burglary in Greater London in April 2025. Police said a line of enquiry that “may have been relevant” had not been identified and pursued at the time, and that Counter Terrorism Policing London had referred aspects of the earlier handling to the Independent Office for Police Conduct. The public update did not name an address or suspect, and does not establish that the burglary inquiry formed the basis of the terrorism-preparation charge. The police update on the reopened inquiry describes what was publicly confirmed.
In a 20 July update, Counter Terrorism Policing reported more than 800 lines of enquiry. That was the figure reported at that time, not a current total. The force later described the investigation as “hugely intensive and complex.” The July police update gives the dated enquiry figure, while the October charge announcement sets out the later development.
When is the next court appearance?
According to the CPS announcement on 2 October, Kerry was due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 7 October 2026. That date was still upcoming as of 3 October; the cited announcement does not report the outcome of the hearing.
What is established—and what remains alleged?
The established procedural facts are that the CPS announced two charges: one count of murder and one charge of engaging in conduct in preparation of terrorist acts. The charge announcement identifies the alleged period and says the terrorism allegation included acts against Farage. It does not make those allegations findings of fact. The CPS says proceedings remain active and Kerry has the right to a fair trial. Read the CPS charge announcement for its full statement and the formal offence wording.
