When Android XR glasses power on but show no picture, the cause is usually a missing video signal rather than a defective display. Start by identifying whether you are using wireless Android XR PC Connect, a wired USB-C connection, or an emulator. For wired use, the phone, tablet, computer, or console must provide DisplayPort video (USB-C DisplayPort Alternate Mode or Thunderbolt 4), and every cable, dock, and power connection must preserve that signal.
Work through the checks below in order. The sequence isolates host compatibility, cable and power faults, adapter limitations, software pairing problems, and hardware failure without buying accessories blindly.
First identify which connection is failing
“Android XR glasses” describes a platform and software ecosystem; the physical glasses may come from different manufacturers. Port requirements, supported resolutions, refresh rates, firmware, and companion apps vary by exact model. Use the model’s current manual for final compatibility decisions.
Recommended Free Tools
- Wireless PC Connect: The glasses or headset cannot discover or pair with a Windows computer.
- Wired no-video: The glasses remain dark, show a logo and then go black, or display an intermittent image over USB-C, HDMI, or DisplayPort.
- Android XR emulator: A phone emulator and glasses emulator repeatedly fail to associate in Android Studio.
Do not treat charging as proof of video compatibility. USB-C can carry power and data without carrying DisplayPort.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Compatibility requirements before troubleshooting
| Connection path | What must be present | What cannot work by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Direct USB-C from phone, tablet, laptop, or handheld | Source USB-C port with DisplayPort Alternate Mode; a full-featured video cable; adequate power | A USB-C port specified only for charging or USB data |
| Thunderbolt 4 computer | Thunderbolt 4 port, compatible cable, and glasses that accept the resulting USB-C DisplayPort signal | A physically identical USB-C port with no video capability |
| Desktop GPU or console | HDMI or DisplayPort output into a powered XR-compatible dock or adapter, plus USB power/data as required by that dock | A passive charging dongle or an ordinary USB hub |
| Android XR PC Connect | Compatible Windows 10-or-newer computer, Android XR device, PC Connect installed on both, and the same Wi-Fi network | Bluetooth or USB pairing alone |
| Android Studio emulators | Phone and glasses emulators running, with their virtual-device association intact | Repeated pairing without a cold boot or data reset when the association is corrupted |
Some XREAL connection documentation gives 5V/1A power guidance for particular setups. Treat that as a model-specific requirement, not a universal specification for every pair of glasses.
Wired troubleshooting: no image or a black screen
1. Verify DisplayPort output on the host
Look up the exact model and port, not just the connector shape. The specification must explicitly say DisplayPort Alternate Mode over USB-C, USB-C video output, or Thunderbolt 4. RayNeo’s phone guidance states that its glasses work with Android phones that support DisplayPort over USB-C. ROG XREAL R1 documentation likewise requires USB-C DP Alt Mode or Thunderbolt 4 for a direct connection.
On a laptop, the video-capable connector may be marked with a DisplayPort symbol, a lightning symbol, or a model-specific icon, while another USB-C connector may provide only charging and data. On a phone or tablet, consult the manufacturer’s technical specifications; Android’s USB-C presence alone does not establish display output.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
2. Use a video-rated cable and reseat both ends
Begin with the cable supplied with the glasses. If you need a replacement, choose a full-featured USB-C cable explicitly rated for DisplayPort video, not a cable advertised only for charging or USB 2 data.
- Disconnect the cable from the glasses and the host.
- Inspect both plugs for bent contacts, debris, looseness, or damage. Check the host and glasses ports without forcing anything into them.
- Reconnect each end firmly and squarely. A plug that feels inserted but is not fully seated can deliver power while dropping high-speed video lanes.
- Test another approved video cable if one is available.
- Test a second known-compatible source. This distinguishes a glasses-side problem from a host-port problem.
XREAL’s official troubleshooting sequence specifically calls for disconnecting and firmly reconnecting both ends, then trying another approved cable or compatible source. ASUS recommends using the included connection cable for its supported glasses setups.
3. Bypass hubs and check power
For diagnosis, connect the glasses directly to the host. Remove USB hubs, extension cables, KVM switches, and unpowered adapters. XREAL advises bypassing hubs or adapters while isolating a fault because each device can alter video negotiation or reduce available power.

Some hosts do not enable an external display while asleep, locked, or in a low-power state. If the glasses rely on the host or dock for power, confirm that the dock’s power supply is connected and switched on. A weak or absent power path can prevent startup even when the cable fits and the source has video output.

4. Check the host’s external-display settings
After a direct connection, open the host’s display controls. Select mirror, extend, or the detected external display as appropriate for that operating system. If the host offers resolution, refresh-rate, or HDR choices, begin with a conservative mode supported by the glasses, then increase settings one at a time.
A black image can result from an unsupported mode even when the DisplayPort link is present. Temporarily disable HDR, variable refresh, or unusual scaling if the glasses manual lists restrictions. Record which mode was selected; that information is useful if support is required.
5. Restart and isolate the failing component
- Disconnect the glasses.
- Restart the source device completely, rather than merely closing the lid or putting it to sleep.
- Unlock the source and connect the glasses directly with the approved cable.
- If there is still no image, test the glasses on another known-compatible DP-output device.
- Test the original host with another known-good video cable or external display.
Interpret the results carefully. If the glasses work on the second host, investigate the original host’s port specification, display settings, firmware, or adapter path. If no compatible host produces an image, inspect the glasses cable and hardware and contact the manufacturer.
6. Use an active, powered adapter when USB-C video is unavailable
A desktop GPU, game console, or phone without USB-C DP Alt Mode needs a conversion path designed for XR glasses. ROG XREAL R1’s connection table illustrates the required arrangement: HDMI or DisplayPort video enters the dock, the dock receives USB power/data, and a USB-C output connects to the glasses.

Choose an adapter or dock whose documentation explicitly lists XR glasses or USB-C DisplayPort output. Confirm all of these before purchase:
- Input connector: HDMI or DisplayPort matching the source.
- Output: USB-C carrying DisplayPort video, not USB data only.
- Separate power input and the voltage/current requirement.
- Supported resolution, refresh rate, and HDR behavior for the glasses.
- Any required firmware, companion app, or model restriction.
A passive USB-C charging dongle cannot convert HDMI or DisplayPort into the signal the glasses need. If an adapter works only when its power supply is attached, that is expected for powered designs; it does not indicate a cable fault.
What each symptom usually indicates
| Symptom | Most likely causes | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| No power, logo, or indicator | Missing host or dock power, damaged cable, loose connector, or insufficient dock power | Connect directly, verify the dock supply, reseat the supplied cable, and test another compatible host |
| Logo appears, then the display is black | No DP Alt Mode, unsupported display mode, bad video cable, hub/adapter negotiation failure, or external-display setting | Use a direct connection, a known video-rated cable, and a conservative display mode |
| Phone charges the glasses but never detects a display | The phone supplies power but its USB-C port lacks DisplayPort output | Check the phone specification for USB-C DP support; use a powered video adapter if absent |
| Image flickers or cuts out when the cable moves | Loose or damaged plug, port contamination, marginal cable, or insufficient power | Reseat both ends, test another cable, remove extensions, and inspect the ports |
| Image works only through one hub or dock | Different hubs negotiate different modes or power levels | Record the working dock’s model and power requirements; do not assume another hub is equivalent |
| Wireless PC Connect cannot find the computer | Different Wi-Fi networks, missing PC Connect installation, or incomplete QR/PIN pairing | Verify the network and installation on both devices, then pair again |
| Emulators refuse to associate repeatedly | Stale emulator state or a broken virtual-device association | Cold-boot, wipe the glasses emulator, forget it on the phone emulator, and pair again |
Wireless Android XR PC Connect troubleshooting
Google’s Android XR PC Connect requires a compatible Windows 10-or-newer computer, an Android XR device, and both devices on the same Wi-Fi network. It is a different path from USB-C display output; a computer can satisfy PC Connect requirements even when its USB-C port cannot drive wired glasses.
- Install PC Connect on the Android XR device and on the Windows computer.
- Connect both devices to the same Wi-Fi network. Guest networks, client isolation, VPNs, and separate 2.4 GHz/5 GHz networks can prevent discovery even when both appear online.
- Open the PC Connect function in the headset or glasses app and select the computer.
- On the computer, display the pairing QR code or PIN requested by PC Connect.
- Scan the QR code or confirm that the PIN shown on both devices matches.
- Accept the request on both devices. Streaming should start automatically after the pair is accepted.
If discovery fails, temporarily disable a VPN or restrictive firewall only if permitted by your organization’s policy, then retry on a normal private Wi-Fi network. Reinstalling the app is less useful than first proving that both devices are on the same network and that pairing was accepted on both ends.

Recovering an Android XR emulator pairing
This procedure applies to Android Studio emulator testing, not necessarily to retail glasses. Android Developers recommends resetting the virtual-device state in a specific order:
- Stop both the phone emulator and the glasses emulator.
- Cold-boot the phone emulator.
- Try the association again after the phone emulator has fully started.
- If it still fails, stop the glasses emulator.
- Wipe the glasses emulator’s data.
- On the phone emulator, open Settings > Connected devices.
- Select the glasses device and choose Forget.
- Start the glasses emulator and pair it again from the phone emulator.
Wiping emulator data removes its stored state, so use this only after a cold boot has failed and be prepared to repeat any emulator-specific setup.
Compare connection paths before buying accessories
When both direct USB-C and an adapter-based route are possible, compare the complete signal chain rather than the connector label. The following factors determine reliability:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Factor | Direct USB-C | Powered HDMI/DisplayPort dock |
|---|---|---|
| Host video capability | USB-C DP Alt Mode or Thunderbolt 4 required | HDMI or DisplayPort output required; dock converts to USB-C video |
| Power | Drawn from the host or an approved power path | Usually requires a dedicated USB power input; follow the dock’s specification |
| Extra hardware | Usually just the glasses and a full-featured cable | Dock/adapter, power supply, and sometimes separate USB data/power cable |
| Cable concerns | Both USB-C ends must support the required video lanes | Input cable, dock output cable, and power cable must each meet their roles |
| Display modes | Limited by the host’s USB-C implementation and glasses firmware | Limited by the dock, source output, glasses, and negotiated HDMI/DP mode |
| Failure points | Host port, cable, firmware, or display settings | All direct-path issues plus dock power, conversion, and firmware |
The least expensive cable is not automatically the right cable. A cable’s ability to charge a phone says nothing about its DisplayPort capability, length tolerance, or supported refresh rate.
Information to record before contacting support
Manufacturers can diagnose a black screen much faster when the entire connection path is documented. Record:
- Exact glasses model and hardware revision, if listed.
- Host make, model, operating-system version, and the specific port used.
- Glasses firmware and companion-app version.
- Every cable, hub, dock, and power supply in the chain, including model numbers.
- Whether the glasses power on, show a logo, flicker, or remain completely dark.
- Selected resolution, refresh rate, HDR setting, and mirror/extend mode.
- Whether a second known-compatible host or cable changed the result.
- For PC Connect, the Windows version, Wi-Fi network arrangement, and whether QR/PIN confirmation completed.
XREAL requests comparable host, cable, adapter, and software details in its support process. Do not promise yourself that cleaning, a firmware update, or a particular adapter will fix every black-screen fault; those steps help only when they address the actual failed link.
Preventing repeat connection failures
- Keep the supplied or manufacturer-approved video cable labeled separately from charge-only USB-C cables.
- Use the host port identified in its manual as DisplayPort-capable; do not assume every USB-C port is interchangeable.
- When using a dock, provide its specified power before connecting the glasses and avoid unpowered hubs.
- Start with a supported resolution and refresh rate, then change one display option at a time.
- Keep glasses firmware, the Android XR app, PC Connect, and host operating systems current when the model’s documentation recommends updates.
- For wireless use, keep the computer and Android XR device on the same ordinary private Wi-Fi network and complete pairing on both screens.
- For emulator work, cold-boot after major virtual-device changes and remove stale associations instead of repeatedly attempting the same pairing.
The decisive test is always whether a complete, documented signal path exists: a video-capable host, a cable with the required lanes, sufficient power, and a display mode the glasses support. Once those conditions are proven, remaining failures are narrowed to the adapter, firmware, software pairing, or hardware itself.
