Android XR glasses expose privacy at two levels. Android shows system indicators when an app uses the camera, microphone or location, while a device maker such as Samsung can add physical recording LEDs, wear detection and rules that stop recording when an indicator is obstructed. Google describes raw eye, hand and face images used for tracking as real-time inputs that are deleted and never stored on the headset or sent to Google. Derived eye and face measurements are different: they remain on the device until a factory reset.
Those distinctions answer most privacy questions, but they do not amount to a single guarantee for every future glasses model, cloud feature or third-party app. Use the permissions, Privacy dashboard, hardware indicators and account controls together, and treat each data type and storage location separately.
How Android XR glasses show that recording or sensing is active
Android’s system privacy indicators
The Android Open Source Project says Android displays privacy indicators for camera, microphone and location access. When an app starts using the camera or microphone, Android shows an indicator in the status area. The indicator can appear as an icon and then as a dot while access is active or still considered recent. Location access has its own indicator.
Tap the indicator to open the system dialog. Android identifies the app that accessed the sensor and the permissions involved, so you can distinguish an app using the microphone from one using the camera or location. This is operating-system reporting: it tells you about access granted through Android, rather than proving that every sensor in a pair of glasses is recording.

The recent-access windows are short and defined by Android. Camera and microphone use remains visible in the recent-access view for 15 seconds after access stops. Location access remains there for 20 seconds. A quick glance at the status bar can therefore miss an event that has already aged out; opening the Privacy dashboard gives you a broader history of permission use.
Physical recording indicators on Samsung eyewear
Samsung describes a separate, device-level safeguard for its announced intelligent eyewear. Samsung Executive Vice President and Head of the XR R&D Team James Choi said an outward-facing LED and an inner LED show when recording is active. The company also says wear detection automatically disables recording when the glasses are removed, and recording stops if the external LED indicator is blocked.
These LEDs are not the same mechanism as Android’s status indicator. The LEDs are controlled by the eyewear hardware and its firmware; Android’s icon and recent-access dialog are controlled by the operating system and the app permission model. Samsung says privacy and personalization settings are managed through a connected Galaxy phone.

What an indicator can and cannot prove
- An Android indicator confirms that an app has accessed a covered permission such as camera, microphone or location.
- A Samsung recording LED is intended to make outward-facing recording visible and to stop recording under the stated removal or blocked-LED conditions.
- Neither mechanism, by itself, documents how a third-party app stores a recording after capture, how long an account keeps synchronized data, or what a particular cloud feature does.
- Eye, hand and face tracking permissions are a separate consideration from ordinary camera permission. An app must ask before receiving those tracking signals.
What Android XR processes and what it stores
Raw perception images are described as transient
Google’s Android XR help documentation separates camera images used for perception from the measurements produced from them. It says images of your eyes, hands and face are analyzed in real time so the platform can understand gaze and hand or face movement. Google states that these images are processed in real time and deleted; they are never stored on the device and never sent to Google.

That statement concerns the platform’s core tracking pipeline. It does not mean that an app cannot create its own photo, video or screenshot after receiving a permitted signal. An application that records a camera stream, saves a file, uploads content or shares it with another service has its own data practices and permissions.
Derived eye and face measurements remain on-device
Google makes a different statement about measurements of the eyes and face. Those derived measurements are stored on-device only, and remain there until a factory reset deletes them. A factory reset is therefore the documented deletion trigger for this class of platform data; simply closing an app is not described as deleting it.
Apps can request hand, eye and face information. Depending on the permission and API involved, the information an app receives can include hand movements, approximate hand size and shape, gaze direction, and whether the eyes are open or closed. Review these permissions as sensor-derived data, not merely as a generic camera toggle.

Do Samsung AI glasses send camera and microphone data to Google?
There is no single public statement in the available product material that maps every camera, microphone or screen-sharing event from Samsung eyewear to Google servers, a Galaxy phone or a particular retention period. Google’s Android XR announcement says glasses have cameras, microphones and speakers, work with a phone, and can use what the glasses see and hear so Gemini understands context. It does not publish a complete retention schedule for every glasses feature, account setting or third-party application.

Samsung makes a narrower, product-specific claim: “Their audio, video, and screen-sharing data are not used to train AI models.” This is a statement about use for AI-model training. It is not a promise that no data is transmitted, that no temporary processing occurs, or that every app and service deletes data immediately. It also does not establish that Samsung and Google use identical policies.
When evaluating a feature that invokes Gemini or another assistant, ask four separate questions: what sensor starts the capture, which app receives it, whether processing occurs on the glasses or phone or in a cloud service, and how the resulting content is retained. The Android indicator can identify the accessing app; the maker’s privacy documentation must answer the remaining product-specific questions.
Android XR privacy settings you can use
Open the security and privacy hub
- Open Settings on the Android XR device or its associated Android interface.
- Select Security and privacy. Google’s Android XR guide places the main controls and the security-and-privacy checkup in this area.
- Run the checkup first. It can surface missing screen-lock protection or permissions that deserve review.
- Set a PIN, password or biometric screen lock if the device offers those choices. A lock protects locally stored measurements and app data when the glasses or phone are not being worn by you.
Review individual permissions
- From Settings > Security and privacy, open Permission manager.
- Choose a permission category such as Camera, Microphone or Location to see which apps are allowed.
- Select an app and change its access to the least permissive option that still supports the feature. Denying access can disable an assistant, recording function or navigation feature.
- Look for hand, eye or face permissions where they are exposed. Revoke them for apps that do not need gaze, blink, hand-shape or movement data.
Permission names and available choices can vary by Android XR release and device maker. If a glasses companion app is required for a feature, review that phone app as well as any XR app: the companion may be the component that requests microphone, camera, location or nearby-device access.
Use Privacy dashboard to investigate access
- Open Settings > Security and privacy > Privacy dashboard.
- Select a permission category to view recent app access.
- Tap an entry to identify the app and the time of access, then open its permission page if the activity was unexpected.
- Remember the Android recent-access timing: camera and microphone entries remain in the indicator view for 15 seconds, and location entries for 20 seconds. The dashboard is the better place to investigate patterns rather than a single moment.
Use the global microphone and location controls
The Security and privacy area includes microphone access and location access controls. Turning a global control off can stop apps from obtaining that sensor until you turn it back on, but features that depend on the sensor may stop working. Use the per-app Permission manager when you want an assistant to retain access while denying it to other apps.

Decide whether to share usage and diagnostics
Google’s usage-and-diagnostics setting can be switched on or off. Examples of diagnostic information include battery level, how frequently apps are used, and the quality and length of mobile, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections. If Web & App Activity is enabled, this information may be stored with your Google Account.
Usage and diagnostics is separate from an app’s own collection. Turning diagnostics off does not stop an app from collecting information needed for its feature, nor does it delete recordings or files that the app already saved. Review the app’s account and in-app privacy controls for those actions.
What happens when you remove, reset or block access
Revoking permission
Revoking camera, microphone, location, hand, eye or face permission prevents the affected app from receiving that category of data going forward, subject to any permission the app requests again. It does not automatically erase data the app previously stored. Delete that content in the app, its companion phone application or its account service.

Google identifies factory reset as the action that deletes the stored on-device eye and face measurements. A reset also removes local apps and settings, so back up anything you intentionally want to keep before using it. A reset cannot be assumed to erase copies that an app exported to a phone, account or cloud service; those locations require their own deletion controls.

Blocked or covered recording LED
For Samsung’s announced intelligent eyewear, Samsung says recording stops if the external LED indicator is blocked. Do not treat this as a universal rule for every Android XR glasses model. It is a Samsung-described hardware behavior, and actual availability can depend on the model, region and shipping software.
A practical privacy checklist before using XR glasses
- Confirm which company made the glasses and whether the product is announced, in testing or shipping in your region.
- Check for a visible outward recording LED and learn what removal, obstruction and battery states do to recording.
- Verify that Android indicators appear when camera, microphone or location access starts, then tap them to identify the app.
- In Permission manager, deny eye, hand and face access to apps that have no clear need for it.
- Open Privacy dashboard after setup and again after installing a new assistant, recorder or navigation app.
- Read whether the maker’s AI statement covers model training only or also transmission, retention and deletion.
- Separate transient platform images, on-device measurements, recordings, diagnostics and account data when deciding what must be deleted.
- Before selling or returning the device, use a factory reset and separately remove app or cloud data that may have been synchronized elsewhere.
How to compare Android XR glasses on privacy
Two products can both advertise “privacy indicators” while offering different protections. Compare them on the following dimensions rather than relying on the label alone.

Bottom line
Android XR’s strongest documented protections are layered: Android tells you which app recently used camera, microphone or location; Google says raw eye, hand and face tracking images are processed and deleted without on-device storage or transmission to Google; and Samsung describes physical LEDs, wear detection and blocked-indicator shutdown for its announced eyewear. Derived eye and face measurements persist locally until a factory reset, while app recordings, diagnostics and account data follow separate rules. Use Permission manager and Privacy dashboard to control access, and do not infer a complete cloud-retention policy from an indicator or an AI-training statement alone.
