Use an app shortcut when you want one tap to open a specific screen or run one defined command. Use a widget when you need information visible before acting, several controls, or lightweight interaction without opening the full app. A widget can sometimes replace a dedicated shortcut if it already exposes the destination clearly, but Android does not require choosing one. In many well-designed apps, a widget supplies context and controls while a shortcut remains the compact deep link for a frequently used destination.
There is no published Android test showing that one mechanism always completes actions faster. The better choice depends on whether the user needs a destination, a decision, or a set of controls.
What an Android app shortcut is
An app shortcut is a launcher or assistant entry point that sends an intent to a particular action in an app. Android defines each shortcut as referencing one or more intents, with each intent launching a specific action. The launcher normally shows the shortcut when the user long-presses the app icon; supported assistants and other surfaces can expose shortcuts as well.
A shortcut is intentionally compact. It generally consists of a label, icon and intent metadata rather than a live panel of information. Tapping it takes the user into the app, usually at a destination such as a compose screen, saved list, account area or playback command.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Static shortcuts
Static shortcuts are declared with the app and are appropriate for actions that remain useful and stable across users and sessions. Examples include opening a new-message screen, viewing downloads or starting a standard capture flow. Because the set is defined as part of the app, static shortcuts are predictable and should not depend on temporary personal data.
Dynamic shortcuts
Dynamic shortcuts are published by the app as context changes. An app might expose a recently used conversation, a current project or a destination that is relevant at a particular time. The app controls the available entries, so it should update them deliberately and remove or disable entries that no longer make sense. Dynamic shortcuts are a good fit for personalized actions, but their labels and destinations must remain understandable when the user sees them outside the app.
Pinned shortcuts
A pinned shortcut is a user-selected shortcut placed directly on the launcher. It represents a destination the user chose, such as one particular account, playlist or document. Users may create any number of pinned shortcuts, subject to launcher and home-screen space. An app cannot remove a pinned shortcut; it can disable one when its destination is no longer valid. That distinction matters when an account is deleted or a feature is retired: disabling is the supported way to prevent a broken action while preserving the user’s launcher arrangement.
Launcher limits and metadata
Most supported launchers display up to four shortcuts at a time in the app-icon menu. The exact device limit is available to an app through getMaxShortcutCountPerActivity(), so developers should not assume that every launcher exposes the same number. Pinned shortcuts are a separate user-created set and are not limited to the same visible menu count.
Shortcut metadata can be read by the launcher. Do not put passwords, private message text, confidential project names or other sensitive information in labels, long descriptions or extras. Use stable shortcut IDs so an updated app can recognize and maintain an existing entry instead of creating duplicates.
What an Android widget is
Android describes a widget as a customizable home-screen element that displays a clear, actionable view of an app’s content or actions. It is a small surface between the launcher and the full app: the user can see state, tap controls or open a detailed screen without first navigating through the app icon.
Widgets are best understood as an information snack connected to a richer app experience. A weather-style status, task count, timer state, account balance, delivery stage or media control can be useful because the current state is visible before the user decides what to do. A shortcut cannot provide that same glanceable context; it simply starts an intent.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Interaction and gesture constraints
Widgets support touch and vertical swipe gestures. They do not provide the full gesture vocabulary of an app, so horizontal paging, complex drag operations and dense multi-step workflows are poor fits. A widget should make its primary action obvious and keep secondary controls large enough to tap reliably.
Size and responsive layouts
A widget occupies home-screen grid space and can be resized. The launcher may offer a small, medium or large footprint, and the available width and height vary across phones, tablets and other form factors. The layout must remain readable at every supported size. If labels collapse, controls overlap or the important status disappears when the widget is made smaller, the design is not ready for broad deployment.
Android’s widget guidance favors one primary use case rather than a miniature copy of the entire app. A compact status view with one clear action is usually more useful than a crowded panel containing every feature.
Widgets and shortcuts compared
| Axis | App shortcut | Widget |

| User effort | One tap from a supported launcher or assistant surface | Add and possibly configure the widget, then interact on the home screen |
| Information density | Minimal label, icon and intent metadata | Visible state, text, lists or controls |
| Space | Small launcher affordance; most launchers show up to four menu entries at once | Uses home-screen grid space and must resize gracefully |
| Interaction | Launches an intent into the app | Touch and vertical swipe within widget constraints |
| Best fit | Stable routine action, context-sensitive action or pinned target | Frequent status checks, quick controls and several related entry points |

Choose by the user’s real question
“Open this exact screen.”
Choose a shortcut. If the desired result is a known destination—such as a new-item form, a particular section or a saved account—extra information on the home screen does not help. A shortcut keeps the path short and leaves the app responsible for the complete workflow.

“Show me the current state before I decide.”
Choose a widget. A user checking whether a timer is running, whether a task is overdue or whether a device is online needs the answer before taking action. Put the state in the widget and make the next relevant control visible.
“Give me several related actions.”
Prefer a widget if the controls can remain legible at supported sizes. For example, a compact media widget can show the current item and provide play, pause and skip controls. Separate shortcuts for every control would force the user to open several launcher menus and would not show the current state.
“The action changes with context.”
Consider a dynamic shortcut. It can represent a recent or personally relevant destination without occupying persistent home-screen space. The app should update the entry when context changes and provide a useful fallback if the underlying item is unavailable.

A widget can replace a dedicated shortcut when its visible control opens the exact destination and the user benefits from the surrounding information. Do not add a redundant shortcut merely because both mechanisms exist. Keep both when the shortcut is useful from the app-icon menu or assistant while the widget is useful for monitoring and control.
How to use shortcuts as a phone user
Launcher wording differs by device, but the process follows the same pattern.
- Open the app-icon menu. On the home screen, touch and hold the app icon. A supported launcher shows the app’s available shortcut entries.
- Tap the desired action. Select the label that matches the destination or command. The app receives the associated intent and opens that flow.
- Pin a favorite when offered. Some launchers let you touch and hold a shortcut entry and drag it onto an empty home-screen position. If the launcher does not offer pinning, the shortcut remains available from the app-icon menu only.
- Check the result. Confirm that the action opens the intended screen rather than a generic home page. An app update, sign-out or deleted account can make a previously valid destination unavailable.
If no entries appear, the app may not publish shortcuts, the launcher may not expose them, or the current device may have reached its supported limit. Updating the app and launcher can help, but there is no user setting that can force an unsupported launcher to display an entry.
How to add and use a widget
- Open the widget picker. Touch and hold an empty area of the home screen, then choose the control labeled Widgets or an equivalent launcher option.
- Find the app. Browse or search for the app’s widget. A single app can offer several sizes or designs.
- Place it. Touch and hold the chosen widget and drag it to an open area of the home-screen grid. The launcher shows whether the selected footprint fits.
- Configure it if prompted. Choose an account, list, folder or other destination when the widget provides setup. If there is no configuration screen, the widget uses the app’s default view.
- Resize and test. Touch and hold the placed widget and use the resize handles, if available. Verify that text and controls remain usable at the smallest size you plan to keep.
- Use the visible controls. Tap a control for an immediate action or tap the information area to open the related app screen. Swipe vertically only when the widget presents a scrollable list.
Removing a widget removes its home-screen instance, not the app or its data. You can add another instance later, and some launchers allow several instances configured for different accounts or lists.
Discoverability beyond the home screen
Widget picker and in-app promotion
The widget picker is the standard discovery surface. An app can also promote its widget at a relevant moment—for example, after a user completes setup or views a screen whose information is useful at a glance. Promotion works best when it explains the benefit and does not interrupt a task with an unrelated request.
Launcher pinning
Supported launchers can offer a pinning flow for a widget, allowing the app to request that the user place it on the home screen. The user remains in control of the final placement. Device support and launcher behavior vary, so an app should continue to work when pinning is unavailable.

Assistant fulfillment for widgets
With App Actions integration, Assistant can display a widget in response to a natural-language query. The request can pass parameters so the widget is tailored to the user’s question, and the app can provide custom text-to-speech introductions. Assistant can also offer a pinning action when the device supports it.
Inline authentication is not guaranteed. If the requested widget needs a sign-in step that cannot be completed in the Assistant surface, fulfillment should fall back to opening the app for authentication instead of exposing private content or leaving the user at a dead end.
Assistant and shortcut surfaces
Shortcuts may appear in supported assistants as well as launchers. For dynamic shortcuts to appear on Google surfaces, Android documents a Google Shortcuts Integration Library path. Without that integration, a dynamic shortcut may be limited to launcher surfaces and the device-specific limits imposed there. Treat assistant availability as an additional surface, not as a replacement for a reliable launcher experience.
Design and implementation guidance for app developers
Designing reliable shortcuts
- Map each shortcut to a stable intent and a destination the app can resolve after an update.
- Use stable IDs; changing an ID for every content refresh creates duplicate or stale entries.
- Keep labels concise and meaningful outside the app’s context.
- Do not place sensitive account, message or document information in shortcut metadata because launchers can access it.
- Use static shortcuts for durable routine actions, dynamic shortcuts for changing context, and pinned shortcuts for user-selected targets.
- Handle missing data, signed-out users and deleted destinations gracefully by opening a safe parent screen or showing a clear recovery path.
Attach shortcuts to the app’s main launcher activities and launch the intended action through the associated intents. Test the behavior from a cold start as well as when the app is already running; the same intent may arrive in different lifecycle states.
Designing a widget that earns space
- Define one primary use case before choosing the layout.
- Provide responsive layouts for the sizes and form factors you support.
- Keep touch targets and text readable at the smallest supported footprint.
- Show useful current state rather than a static advertisement for the app.
- Make every control’s result predictable, and provide a clear tap target that opens the relevant detail screen.
- Respect the widget’s touch-and-vertical-swipe interaction model instead of relying on unsupported gestures.
Test on multiple screen sizes, orientations and launcher grid configurations. A layout that looks correct on one phone can clip text or hide a control on another form factor. Also test empty, loading, error, signed-out and stale-data states; a widget that only works when the network is perfect will lose trust quickly.
Combining both mechanisms
A complementary design often works best. The widget can show the current project and expose several controls, while a shortcut can open the project’s full screen directly from the app icon. Keep the responsibilities distinct: the widget should answer “what is happening and what can I do now?”, while the shortcut should answer “where do I want to go immediately?”

Common pitfalls and fixes
The shortcut opens the wrong place
Inspect the intent’s destination and the handling code for cold starts, existing tasks and signed-out states. Use a stable route and provide a parent-screen fallback when the specific item no longer exists. Do not silently redirect every shortcut to the app home screen; that defeats the reason the shortcut was created.

The launcher shows fewer shortcuts than expected
Most launchers show up to four entries, and the actual maximum is device-specific. Prioritize the most useful static or dynamic entries, and offer pinning for destinations users want to keep. Never assume that publishing more entries guarantees visibility.
A pinned shortcut cannot be deleted by the app
This is expected behavior. The app can disable an invalid pinned shortcut, but the user controls removal. Keep the disabled label understandable and direct the user to a valid replacement when possible.
The widget is unreadable after resizing
Provide size-specific layouts or responsive constraints, reduce secondary content at smaller widths and preserve the primary status and action. Test the exact minimum and maximum sizes advertised by the widget.

Remove deep navigation and low-value controls. A widget should be an information snack, not a complete replacement for the app. If a task needs multiple screens, use the widget for status and one clear handoff into the app.
Assistant fulfillment exposes a private screen
Require authentication when necessary and fall back to the app if inline authentication is unavailable. Do not assume that a natural-language request proves the user’s identity, and avoid putting private values in shortcut or widget metadata that other surfaces can read.
A practical selection checklist
- Choose a shortcut when there is one known destination or command and no context is needed first.
- Choose a widget when current information determines the next action.
- Choose a widget for several related controls that can remain readable in the available space.
- Choose a dynamic shortcut when the useful destination changes with the user’s context.
- Choose a pinned shortcut when the user selects one persistent destination.
- Use both when monitoring and control belong on the home screen but a direct deep link is also valuable.
- Before shipping, test launcher limits, widget resizing, cold starts, sign-out, deleted data and authentication fallback.
Bottom line: which is better for quick actions?
An app shortcut is better for a single, known action: one tap should launch the exact screen or command. A widget is better when the user needs glanceable state, multiple controls or a decision before opening the app. Because the mechanisms solve different problems, the strongest Android experiences often expose both without duplicating their roles.
