To curb widget battery drain, first identify the app that hosts each widget, then limit that app’s background battery use, disable refresh features and data sources you do not need, and use Battery Saver when delayed updates are acceptable. For privacy, inspect the host app in Privacy Dashboard and Permission Manager, revoke unnecessary access to location, calendar, notifications or nearby devices, and hide sensitive widget or notification content from the lock screen.
Android menu names differ by version and manufacturer. The paths below use current Android terminology where available; your phone may place the same controls under a slightly different heading.
Why a widget can use battery and personal data
A widget is a small view supplied by another app. The visible tile may be simple, but its host app can wake in the background, fetch network data, process notifications, read calendars or query location before drawing the next update. A weather tile that checks location, a travel tile that monitors nearby devices, or a finance tile that reacts to notifications can therefore do more work than a static clock.
Battery use depends on the device, Android release, manufacturer power-management rules, network conditions, refresh frequency and the host app’s design. No official source establishes a universal percentage of battery saved by changing widget settings, so treat any promised percentage as device-specific rather than a guarantee.

Privacy exposure is separate from power use. A widget can have permission to read a data source even when you rarely look at it, and lock-screen display can reveal that data to someone who can see your phone. The goal is not to remove every permission, but to keep only the sources that make the widget worthwhile.
Reduce battery drain step by step
1. Identify the widget’s host app
Long-press the widget and choose App info, Widget settings or an equivalent option. Write down the host app before changing anything; several widgets can belong to one app, and removing a widget does not necessarily stop that app’s other background work.
Open Settings > Battery and inspect battery usage. Look for the host app’s background activity rather than judging only by the widget’s screen time. Google recommends restricting apps that show unusually high battery use and enabling Adaptive Battery when the option is available on your device.
2. Set an appropriate background-battery policy
From the host app’s battery page, select the least permissive mode that still supports the widget you actually need. Depending on the phone, choices may be named Unrestricted, Optimized and Restricted, or may appear as a background-usage switch.
- Optimized is the sensible starting point for most widgets: Android decides when background work is worthwhile.
- Restricted can stop or delay refreshes and notifications. Use it for a low-priority widget or an app that is demonstrably misbehaving.
- Unrestricted allows more background activity and should be reserved for a widget whose timely updates are genuinely important.
After changing the policy, observe the widget through a normal day. A stale tile is evidence that the restriction is too aggressive for that use, not proof that every widget needs unrestricted access.
3. Turn off refresh features and data sources you do not use
Open the widget’s own settings, then disable optional categories, frequent-refresh controls, location-based cards, nearby-device information and app-notification inputs that add no value. A widget that can show several cards may perform work for all of them until you turn the unused categories off.
For Google’s At a Glance widget, its settings include feature toggles and nearby-device access. Disable cards you never read and nearby-device information unless you actively use that feature. Similar controls in other widgets may be labelled Personalization, Data sources, Refresh or What you see.

Prefer a manual-refresh or longer-refresh option when offered. Do not assume that a visible “refresh” button makes the app completely inactive between taps; the host app’s battery page remains the authoritative place to check background use.
4. Remove duplicate or low-value widgets
Keep one widget for a job instead of several tiles reading the same source. For example, a calendar widget, agenda widget and notification widget may all trigger work for overlapping events. Remove a tile by long-pressing it and dragging it to Remove, or use the launcher’s remove command. This changes the home screen without deleting the host app, so review the app’s battery entry afterward if drain continues.
5. Use Adaptive Battery and Battery Saver deliberately
Adaptive Battery learns which apps you use and can reduce background activity for less-used apps. Leave it enabled unless you have a specific troubleshooting reason to turn it off.
Battery Saver is a stronger, temporary measure. Google’s Android Help explains that, when it is on, Android may enable Dark theme and limit or turn off background activity; visual effects, certain features, network connections and apps can be delayed. A widget may therefore show an older timestamp or update only after you open its host app.

Enable Battery Saver from Settings > Battery > Battery Saver or Quick Settings, and set a schedule if your phone offers one. Test time-sensitive widgets while it is active. If a departure-time, security or communication widget becomes unreliable, use ordinary battery optimization for that host app and reserve Battery Saver for low-battery periods.
6. Account for unused-app optimization
Android can optimize apps that have not been opened for a long time. Google documents that this process may revoke permissions, stop unused apps from running in the background and stop them from sending notifications. On phones that expose Pause app activity if unused, exempt an essential widget host; otherwise, Android may remove the permissions or background behavior the widget needs.
Do not exempt every widget. An exemption preserves background behavior and can increase drain. Use it only when a widget is important and you have confirmed that unused-app handling is the reason it stops updating.

7. Verify the result instead of guessing
After each change, give the phone enough normal use to reveal a pattern, then return to Settings > Battery. Check whether the host app’s background share falls and whether the widget still updates at the interval you require. Change one setting at a time so you know which action produced the result.
Audit widget permissions for privacy
Use Privacy Dashboard to see actual access
Open Settings > Security & privacy > Privacy dashboard (the exact grouping varies). Select a permission category such as location, calendar or nearby devices, then review which apps accessed it and when. Google describes the dashboard as a place to see which apps are accessing data, which permissions they are using and when that access occurs.
This history helps distinguish a widget that merely requests a permission from one that is actively using it. If the host app appears at times when you did not use the widget, inspect its settings and battery behavior before deciding whether the access is necessary.
Revoke permissions in Permission Manager
From Settings > Security & privacy > Privacy > Permission manager, choose a permission and select the host app. Set the narrowest available choice, such as Don’t allow or Allow only while using the app. Some phones also offer approximate rather than precise location.
- Location: revoke it for a weather, travel or local-information widget if you are willing to choose a fixed city manually. Location-based cards may disappear or stop updating.
- Nearby devices: turn it off unless the widget needs information from watches, headphones, beacons or other nearby hardware. At a Glance’s nearby-device information is optional.
- Calendar: remove access from an agenda widget that you no longer use, understanding that event cards will be empty.
- Notifications: disable notification access for a widget that does not need to mirror alerts. This can stop notification-based cards.
- Physical activity, contacts or other categories: allow them only when the widget’s stated function depends on them.
When Android offers a one-time or “while using” option, prefer it for a task that does not require continuous background access. If revoking a permission breaks the widget, either restore it or accept a less capable, more private configuration.

Permission revocation is not the only control. Widget settings may let you choose which calendars, accounts, notification types or card categories appear. Select the smallest useful set. A work-calendar widget does not need personal calendars, and a notification widget may not need every app.
Review account-level personalization controls as well. Turning off a card category can prevent the host from requesting that data while preserving the rest of the widget.

Protect information shown on the lock screen
If another person can see your phone, disable sensitive widget cards and notification content on the lock screen. For At a Glance, turn off sensitive content in its settings. In Android’s notification settings, choose an option that hides sensitive content, or disable lock-screen notifications altogether when confidentiality matters more than glanceable updates.
Lock-screen privacy is about display, not permission. Hiding a calendar title does not stop the host app from reading the calendar; combine the display change with a Permission Manager review when you no longer need that data source.

Google’s Android settings include a Usage & diagnostics control. You can turn it off from the Google settings area. Google says essential services continue, but this switch does not control information collected directly by individual apps. Review the host app’s own privacy and data controls separately if diagnostics or analytics are a concern.
Keep widgets useful while Battery Saver is on
Battery Saver intentionally trades immediacy for endurance. Before relying on it, classify each widget by how quickly its information becomes obsolete:

There is no universal “widget-safe” Battery Saver setting. The correct decision depends on how stale the information can become before it is harmful or useless.
A framework for deciding which widgets to keep
Evaluate each widget against five questions before granting exceptions or permissions:

- Refresh behavior: Does it update on a schedule, on demand, or whenever an event occurs? More frequent background work generally creates more opportunities for battery use.
- Data sources: Does it need location, calendar, notifications, nearby devices or network access? Remove every source that does not improve the information you see.
- Lock-screen exposure: Could its text reveal appointments, destinations, messages or account details to someone viewing the phone?
- Battery Saver tolerance: Does it remain useful when background work is limited, or does its purpose depend on immediate updates?
- Value after restriction: If you disable optional permissions and cards, does the remaining widget still justify its space and battery activity?
A widget that fails the last question should be removed rather than granted unrestricted background access.

Troubleshooting common problems
The widget is still high in battery usage
Recheck the host app in Settings > Battery, then disable optional cards, location-based features and notification inputs. Look for duplicate widgets from the same host. If usage remains high, set the app to Optimized or Restricted and observe whether the widget’s function is still acceptable. A manufacturer’s battery-management panel may apply additional rules, so consult the device maker’s instructions for that model.
The widget stopped updating after a privacy change
Open Privacy Dashboard to confirm which permission was removed, then check the widget’s own settings. Restore only the specific permission required for the desired feature; do not broadly re-enable every category. If the widget needs current location but you prefer privacy, choose a fixed location in the widget instead of granting continuous location access when that option exists.
The widget is stale only when Battery Saver is active
This is expected behavior when Android limits background work or network connections. Open the host app to force a current view, schedule Battery Saver for times when stale data is acceptable, or keep that host app optimized rather than unrestricted. If the information is safety- or deadline-critical, use a channel that you have tested under the phone’s power-saving mode.

Check whether the app has been marked unused. Android may revoke permissions, stop background execution and stop notifications for long-unused apps. Disable Pause app activity if unused only for a widget you actively depend on, and periodically open the host app so the system recognizes it as in use.
Why instructions differ between Android phones
Google notes that battery life and available steps depend on the device, Android version and manufacturer. One phone may put Adaptive Battery under Battery, another under a manufacturer’s power-management screen; permission pages may be grouped under Privacy or Security & privacy. Search Settings for “battery,” “permissions,” “privacy dashboard,” “lock screen” or the widget’s host-app name when a path does not match.
Apply changes at the host-app level and confirm their effect on your specific device. A setting documented for one Android release may be absent, renamed or supplemented by manufacturer software on another.
