Short answer: Android Private DNS is the simplest narrow alternative to a VPN: it encrypts DNS lookups, but it does not tunnel all traffic or hide your IP address. A proxy can route traffic from an app or network that supports it, yet other apps may bypass it. Tor provides multi-hop anonymity and censorship resistance, with higher latency, blocked services, and an Android VPN product that is still in beta. Choose based on the outcome you need: encrypted DNS, app-specific proxying, or anonymity and access against censorship. If you need a managed, device-wide encrypted tunnel, a conventional VPN remains the clearest fit.
Which Android VPN alternative fits your goal?
These technologies solve different problems. Treating them as interchangeable leads to the most common privacy mistakes: expecting Private DNS to conceal an IP address, assuming a proxy covers every app, or expecting Tor to behave like a fast, universally accepted VPN.
| Option | Main protection | Coverage | IP or location hiding | Typical trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private DNS | Encrypts DNS queries to a chosen resolver with DNS-over-TLS | DNS lookups; other traffic is unchanged | No | Narrow scope; the resolver can see the queries it receives |
| Proxy | Relays traffic through an intermediary for software that uses it | App- or network-dependent | Sometimes, for proxied traffic | Bypass risk; operator trust, authentication, and logging matter |
| Tor | Multi-hop anonymity and censorship resistance | Depends on the Tor client and mode; the Android Tor VPN is intended to cover broader traffic | Yes, for Tor-routed traffic | Latency, blocked exits, compatibility problems, and beta status on Android |
| Conventional VPN | Encrypted tunnel to a VPN server | Usually device-wide through Android VPN APIs | Yes | You shift trust to the VPN operator and must select and configure a service |
Private DNS, a proxy, and Tor can all be useful, but none should be described as a universal VPN substitute. The relevant question is which traffic is protected, who can observe it, and what inconvenience you can accept.

Private DNS: encrypted lookups, not a whole-device tunnel
What Private DNS actually protects
Android 9 and later support Private DNS using DNS-over-TLS. Google for Developers describes it this way: “Android 9 supports ‘Private DNS’ which uses DNS-over-TLS to provide security and privacy for your DNS queries.” When your phone asks a resolver to translate a domain name into an address, the lookup travels through an encrypted TLS connection instead of ordinary plaintext DNS.

That narrower protection matters on hostile Wi‑Fi networks. Someone monitoring the local network has less opportunity to read the DNS names your phone requests, and a resolver can apply filtering policies before returning an address. Private DNS is therefore useful for encrypted name resolution and resolver-level blocking without installing a separate tunnel application.
What it does not protect
- It does not hide your phone’s public IP address from websites, apps, or other Internet services.
- It does not encrypt arbitrary application payloads. HTTPS may encrypt a connection to its destination, but that encryption is provided by the application protocol, not by Private DNS.
- It does not change your apparent country or provide an anonymity network.
- It does not force traffic from apps that use their own DNS mechanisms or a pre-existing tunnel.
The configured resolver still receives the DNS queries sent to it. Private DNS changes the path and encryption of those lookups; it does not make the resolver unable to associate them with your connection.
How to enable it on Android
Labels vary by manufacturer, but Android 9 and later normally expose the setting under the network section:
- Open Settings and go to Network & internet (some phones call it Connections).
- Tap Private DNS. If it is not visible, use the Settings search field for “Private DNS.”
- Choose Private DNS provider hostname and enter the hostname supplied by the resolver you trust, or choose Automatic to use the system’s default behavior.
- Tap Save, then test several sites and apps. A typo or an unreachable resolver can make name resolution fail even though Wi‑Fi or mobile data appears connected.
Use a hostname, not an IP address, when the interface specifically asks for a provider hostname. Keep a record of the previous setting so you can restore it while troubleshooting.

When Private DNS is the right choice
- You want to reduce exposure of DNS lookups on public networks.
- You need resolver-level blocking or policy enforcement and do not need IP masking.
- You want a system setting rather than a continuously running tunnel app.
- You need a low-complexity option that is built into Android 9 or newer.
Do not choose it as the sole control when the requirement is a different public IP, location shifting, or device-wide encryption of non-HTTPS traffic. Google also documents that Private DNS settings have no effect while a VPN or DNS-changer app is active; the active tunnel or DNS changer controls how those lookups are handled.
Proxy: useful for selected traffic, easy to bypass accidentally
How a proxy differs from a VPN
A proxy is an intermediary. A client connects to the proxy, and the proxy makes or relays a connection to the destination. Android exposes proxy controls among its advanced network settings, but Android’s setting does not guarantee that every application will use the intermediary. Many apps honor the Wi‑Fi network’s HTTP proxy; others ignore system proxy settings, use their own networking stack, connect directly, or use a protocol the proxy cannot relay.
For an HTTPS website, the browser normally establishes end-to-end TLS with the destination after passing through the proxy. The proxy can see connection metadata and, depending on the protocol and configuration, the destination name, but it cannot automatically decrypt correctly implemented HTTPS content. An ordinary proxy does not, by itself, encrypt every device connection.

- Tap the connected network and choose Edit or the pencil icon.
- Open Advanced options, set Proxy to Manual or Proxy auto-config, and enter the host, port, and any bypass list required by the network administrator.
- Save the network. Test the specific app or browser that is supposed to use the proxy, then test an unrelated app to determine whether it bypasses the setting.
Android’s Wi‑Fi proxy setting is generally network-specific. Switching to mobile data or another Wi‑Fi network can remove it. A proxy auto-configuration URL can also send different destinations through different paths, so document the policy before relying on it for a security control.
Questions to ask before trusting a proxy
- Coverage: Does the required app honor the proxy, and which protocols does it support (HTTP, HTTPS, or SOCKS)?
- Operator: Who runs the proxy and where is it hosted? The operator can observe connection metadata and may be able to log it.
- Authentication: Is a username and password required, and can credentials be stored safely?
- Encryption: Is the connection to the final destination protected by HTTPS or another end-to-end protocol?
- Bypasses: Do background services, other apps, DNS requests, or direct IP connections avoid the proxy?
- Failure behavior: Does the app stop when the proxy is unavailable, or silently fall back to a direct connection?
A proxy is a good fit for an enterprise network requirement, a development test, or one application whose proxy support is documented. It is a poor fit when you need a reliable whole-phone privacy boundary.
Tor: anonymity and censorship resistance with real costs
What Tor is designed to do
Tor sends traffic through a distributed sequence of relays rather than directly to the destination. The design reduces the ability of a single local observer, relay, or destination to connect your identity and browsing activity as easily as with a direct connection. Tor is aimed at anonymity and censorship resistance, not at making every connection fast or universally accepted.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe Tor Project describes its Android product this way: “Tor VPN lets you decide which country websites and apps see, giving you more control over privacy and access.” The project’s development report says the primary use case that emerged for the Android beta was “unblock the internet,” so bypassing blocking and reaching otherwise unavailable services are central documented goals.

Android Tor VPN status and coverage
The Tor Project’s Android Tor VPN is currently a beta. Treat it as evolving software: behavior, supported modes, and compatibility can change between releases. Whether all device traffic is routed depends on the client’s current mode and your per-app selections. Verify the apps you care about instead of assuming that installing Tor automatically covers every connection.
Tor-routed traffic presents an exit address associated with the Tor network rather than your home or mobile connection. Services can recognize and block Tor exits, require additional verification, or refuse logins from them. A Tor exit also does not provide end-to-end encryption to a destination that does not use HTTPS; the last relay can observe unencrypted content.
What you trade for anonymity
- Latency: Multiple relay hops add delay compared with a direct connection or a conventional VPN.
- Compatibility: Streaming, banking, gaming, and other services may challenge or block Tor addresses.
- Throughput: Performance varies with relay capacity and distance; do not expect VPN-like consistency.
- Application behavior: Some apps do not work correctly through Tor, and some may attempt direct connections unless the client enforces routing.
- Identity leakage: Signing in to an account, sharing identifying information, or installing uniquely identifying extensions can defeat the anonymity you were seeking.
When Tor is the better alternative
Choose Tor when reducing dependence on a single intermediary, resisting network censorship, or making traffic harder to associate with your connection matters more than speed and universal service access. Use a conventional VPN instead when your priority is a stable, device-wide encrypted tunnel for ordinary daily apps.

Private DNS and Tor can conflict
Tor’s DNS handling is part of its privacy model. Tor Project support warns that Tor VPN does not support manually setting a DNS provider hostname because that can bypass Tor and reveal visited sites to that DNS provider. Its troubleshooting guidance says users who have an Android Private DNS hostname configured may need to change that setting before using Tor VPN.

Before launching Tor VPN, review Settings > Network & internet > Private DNS. If a custom hostname is set, follow the current instructions in the Tor app or Tor Project support and temporarily use the setting they specify. Do not assume that adding both protections increases privacy: a DNS request sent outside Tor can expose the domains you visit even when other traffic is routed through Tor.
When Tor is stopped, restore your preferred Private DNS configuration if you changed it. Test DNS and ordinary browsing after each change, because a stale setting can leave the phone apparently connected but unable to resolve names.
Choosing by requirement: a practical decision framework
Choose Private DNS when the requirement is encrypted DNS
Use Private DNS for a simple, system-level reduction in DNS exposure or for resolver-based filtering. Confirm that Android 9 or later is installed, select a trusted resolver hostname, and remember that the public IP and application payloads remain unchanged.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Choose a proxy when one app or network requires it
Use a proxy when the app, workplace, school, or test environment explicitly supports HTTP, HTTPS, or SOCKS proxying. Verify coverage with the actual app, check whether HTTPS remains end-to-end, and understand the operator’s logging and authentication practices.
Choose Tor when anonymity or access against censorship is primary
Use Tor when multi-hop routing and resistance to centralized blocking outweigh latency and compatibility costs. Check the Android client’s beta limitations, confirm which apps are routed, and avoid combining it with a manually configured Private DNS hostname unless the Tor instructions say it is safe.
Choose a conventional VPN when you need predictable device-wide routing
A conventional VPN is the clearest fit for a managed encrypted tunnel covering most device traffic through Android’s VPN APIs. It can hide the phone’s IP address from destinations, but the VPN operator becomes a significant trust point. Evaluate its jurisdiction, retention policy, client permissions, kill-switch behavior, and support for the Android version you use.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Wi‑Fi says connected, but websites do not load after enabling Private DNS | Typo, unavailable resolver, or captive portal interception | Temporarily return Private DNS to Automatic, complete the portal sign-in, then re-enter the hostname carefully |
| Some apps use the proxy and others do not | The apps have different proxy support or use direct connections | Check each app’s documentation and test on both Wi‑Fi and mobile data |
| Tor is very slow or a service refuses access | Relay distance, congestion, or Tor-exit blocking | Try a different time or route, accept that some services block Tor, and use a different tool when universal compatibility is required |
| Tor appears to work, but DNS queries show up at a chosen resolver | A manually configured Private DNS hostname is bypassing Tor | Remove or change the hostname according to Tor’s current Android guidance, then retest DNS while Tor is active |
| Changing networks removes the privacy setting | Proxy settings are attached to a particular Wi‑Fi network | Recheck the network’s advanced proxy options and remember that mobile data may not inherit them |
| A VPN and Private DNS seem to disagree | Android gives precedence to the active VPN or DNS-changer app | Disable competing tunnel or DNS apps temporarily and verify which one is handling DNS |
Privacy checks before relying on any alternative
- Define the asset first: DNS confidentiality, IP masking, anonymity, censorship circumvention, or a stable encrypted tunnel.
- Map coverage: list the browser, messaging apps, games, work apps, and background services that must be protected.
- Test both Wi‑Fi and mobile data. A Wi‑Fi proxy setting generally does not follow the phone to cellular data.
- Check for direct fallbacks. An app that ignores a proxy or opens its own connection can bypass your intended control.
- Keep HTTPS enabled. Tor or a proxy does not make an unencrypted destination connection private after traffic leaves the intermediary.
- Review operator trust. Private DNS, proxies, Tor relays, and VPN servers each expose different metadata to different parties.
- Retest after Android or app updates. The Android Tor product is beta software, and network-setting labels and behavior can change by manufacturer and release.
The durable rule is simple: match the tool to the traffic boundary. Private DNS protects name resolution, a proxy relays traffic only when software uses it, Tor prioritizes anonymity and censorship resistance, and a conventional VPN provides the most straightforward device-wide tunnel. None eliminates the need to understand who can observe the remaining metadata.
