The highest-impact changes are already built into Android: audit permissions in the Privacy dashboard, remove ad-personalization and usage-sharing controls you do not want, hide sensitive lock-screen notifications, install updates, and run Play Protect. For battery life, shorten the screen timeout, lower or adapt brightness, use Dark theme and Adaptive Battery, then restrict individual power-hungry apps or enable Battery Saver when you need a broader reduction in activity.
Menu names vary by Android version and manufacturer. The paths below match Google’s current Android and Pixel Tablet guidance; Samsung, Lenovo, Amazon Fire, Xiaomi and other interfaces may place the same controls under different headings.
Start with a privacy and battery baseline
Before changing anything, note which apps you rely on for alarms, messaging, navigation, streaming and work. Privacy controls can remove access that an app genuinely needs, while battery controls can delay notifications or background updates. A quick baseline makes it easier to tell whether a change solved a problem or created a new one.
- Check Settings → Battery → Battery usage and note apps using unusual background power.
- Open Settings → Security & privacy (or Privacy) and review the Privacy dashboard and Permission manager.
- Confirm that the tablet is receiving system and security updates.
- Write down any apps that must deliver immediate notifications or perform background syncing.
There is no official universal percentage for the battery savings from these settings. Results depend on screen size, network conditions, radio use, app behavior and your usage pattern.

Privacy settings to change first
Use the Privacy dashboard to find real access
Open Settings → Security & privacy (or Privacy) → Privacy dashboard. Google’s dashboard records which apps accessed sensitive permissions and when. Select a permission category to see the apps involved, then open an app to change its access. This is more useful than guessing which apps might be tracking you: it shows access that occurred on your tablet.
Review the last day or several days, depending on the Android version. An app that accessed the microphone or location at an unexpected time deserves closer inspection. If the access is not needed, change the permission or uninstall the app. Recheck the dashboard after using the tablet normally; a one-time setup access may be legitimate, whereas recurring background access may not be.
Reduce permissions with Permission manager
In Settings → Security & privacy → Permission manager, inspect camera, microphone, location, photos and videos or files, contacts, calendar and other sensitive categories. Choose each permission, select an app, and grant the least access that still supports its purpose.
- Use Allow only while using the app for location when continuous background location is unnecessary.
- Choose Ask every time where your Android version offers it and the extra prompt is acceptable.
- For photos, select specific items rather than the entire library when the picker provides that option.
- Set unused or unfamiliar apps to Don’t allow, then test the app before deciding whether to restore access.
Permission changes are reversible. If an app stops importing a file, scanning a QR code or attaching a photo, return to Permission manager and grant only the affected permission. Revisit permissions for apps you no longer use; removing access or uninstalling them prevents silent accumulation of privileges.
Turn off ad-personalization controls you do not want
Open Settings → Google → All services → Ads, or search Settings for Ads or Ads privacy. Android exposes separate controls for ad topics, app-suggested ads and ad measurement. Turn off each category if you do not want those signals used for advertising-related personalization.

These switches affect Android’s advertising controls, not every data practice of every app. An individual app can collect information under its own privacy policy, so review that app’s account, privacy and notification settings as well.
Disable Usage & diagnostics if you prefer not to share device-use data
Find Settings → Security & privacy → More privacy settings → Usage & diagnostics (the exact nesting differs by device) and turn it off if you do not want to send device-use and performance information to Google. Google states that essential services, including receiving a new Android version, can still work with this setting disabled. This does not prevent independent data collection by apps.

Protect information shown while the tablet is locked
Go to Settings → Security & privacy → Device unlock or Screen lock. Use a strong PIN or password; add a fingerprint when your model supports it and the convenience is worthwhile. Then open Settings → Notifications → Notifications on the lock screen and choose an option that hides sensitive content or hides notifications entirely while locked.
Hiding content prevents message previews, one-time codes and other private text from appearing to anyone who wakes the screen. You can still see that a notification exists and unlock the tablet to read it. If you need urgent alerts, configure exceptions per app rather than exposing all previews.
Keep the security layer current
In the tablet’s security controls, check Google Play Protect, Find My Device and system updates. Run a Play Protect scan after installing an app from outside your usual set, and leave automatic security updates enabled when possible. Find My Device must be configured before a loss; setting it up after the tablet disappears may not help.

Updates can change menu names and add controls, so revisit the Privacy dashboard and Permission manager after a major Android update.

Battery settings with the best trade-off
Cut screen power first
The display is often the most visible battery load. Open Settings → Display → Screen timeout and choose the shortest interval that does not interrupt reading or presentations. Under Display → Brightness level, lower brightness manually or enable adaptive brightness if your tablet offers it. A tablet left at maximum brightness while idle wastes power without improving privacy or responsiveness.
Enable Dark theme under Display. It changes the interface and can reduce power on some display technologies, but the benefit varies by panel and content. It is also easier on the eyes in a dark room; it is not a substitute for a sensible timeout.
Enable Adaptive Battery for normal use
Open Settings → Battery → Adaptive Battery and turn it on. Google says Adaptive Battery learns from your tablet’s usage to continuously optimize how apps use battery. Learning takes time, and the system may reduce performance or delay notifications for less-used apps. Keep it enabled for ordinary use unless a specific app’s delayed work is unacceptable.
Use Battery Saver when you need a broad reduction
Turn on Settings → Battery → Battery Saver, or add Battery Saver to Quick Settings for rapid access. Google describes Battery Saver as limiting or turning off background activity; it also turns on Dark theme and may delay or disable some visual effects, features, network connections and app activity. Notifications, syncing and background refresh can arrive later.

Use a schedule or a battery-level trigger if your Android version offers one. For a long flight, a low-battery commute or emergency reserve, Battery Saver is more predictable than manually closing apps. Turn it off when real-time notifications, full network activity or normal visual effects matter.
Inspect Battery usage before restricting apps
Open Settings → Battery → Battery usage. Android separates recent consumption by app and, on some versions, by screen, mobile network, Wi-Fi or background activity. Tap an app with unusually high use to see its details, then choose the available battery-management option.

Start with Optimized. Select Restricted only for an identified offender, then test it for a day. Do not restrict an alarm, security, accessibility, messaging or work app unless you have confirmed that delayed background activity is acceptable.
Radios and syncing: quick wins with obvious side effects
Turn off connections you are not using
Disable tethering or hotspot when no device is connected. Turn off Bluetooth when you are not using a keyboard, headphones or other accessory. Turn off location when no app needs it, and disable automatic sync for accounts or services that do not need immediate updates. These controls are available in Settings and usually in Quick Settings.
Each saves power by reducing radio activity or background work, but the consequence is direct:

- Without location, navigation, geofencing and location-based recommendations may stop or become less accurate.
- With Bluetooth off, paired accessories disconnect until you enable it again.
- With hotspot off, connected devices lose internet access.
- With automatic sync off, newly created mail, calendar entries, files or photos may not appear on the tablet until you refresh or sync manually.
Use these as situational switches rather than permanent defaults if you depend on the affected feature.
What changes work on which Android versions?
Google notes that some battery steps work only on Android 13 and later. Pixel Tablet Battery Saver instructions cited by Google require Android 14 or later, and some battery-drain controls require Android 15 or later. A control may therefore be absent even when your tablet is functioning normally.
Manufacturer interfaces also change the path. Samsung, Lenovo, Amazon Fire, Xiaomi and other Android-derived systems may rename Privacy, Battery usage, Adaptive Battery or app-restriction menus. Use the manufacturer’s support documentation for your exact model when a setting is missing; do not install an unrelated “battery optimizer” to recreate it.

- Install pending Android, Google Play system and app updates.
- Open Privacy dashboard and remove unexpected camera, microphone, location, file, photo or contact access.
- Set ad topics, app-suggested ads and ad measurement according to your preference.
- Turn off Usage & diagnostics if you do not want to share device-use and performance data with Google.
- Set a strong screen lock and hide sensitive lock-screen notification content.
- Run Play Protect and confirm Find My Device is configured.
- Shorten screen timeout, reduce brightness or enable adaptive brightness, and enable Dark theme.
- Enable Adaptive Battery for normal use.
- Check Battery usage and move only clearly excessive background apps to Restricted.
- Use Battery Saver, radio toggles and sync controls temporarily when the situation calls for them.
Troubleshooting after a change
An app stops working
Return to Permission manager and restore the single permission named in the app’s error, or change its battery setting from Restricted to Optimized. Reopen the app and test the affected function before changing anything else.
Notifications arrive late
Check Battery Saver first, then inspect the app under Battery usage. Set it to Optimized and verify that automatic sync is enabled for the relevant account. If the app still delays alerts, check its own notification and background-data settings.
The tablet still drains quickly
Review Battery usage after a normal day rather than immediately after changing settings. Look for a bright display, long screen-on time, hotspot use, weak-network conditions, location-heavy apps or one app with persistent background activity. Restrict the confirmed offender, and turn off radios or sync that are genuinely unused. If the drain began suddenly after an update or a new app, test by removing that app or checking the manufacturer’s support guidance.
