For a smoother Android drawing experience, use an active stylus, turn on the drawing app’s pen-only or palm-rejection mode, select the tablet’s highest supported refresh rate, and remove battery, heat, background-workload, and navigation-gesture conflicts. There is no single Android-wide “palm rejection” switch: reliable results depend on the stylus hardware, Android’s input system, and the app interpreting the input correctly.
The steps below separate settings that can improve perceived responsiveness from settings that only prevent accidental touches. That distinction matters: a glove can keep your hand from sticking to the glass, while only the digitizer, input pipeline, app processing, and rendering path determine pen latency.
What actually causes pen lag on an Android tablet?
Android Developers defines input latency as the time required for the hardware, system, and application to process and render user input. When a stroke appears behind the stylus, the delay can come from several stages rather than one bad setting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Latency stage | What it includes | What you can change |
|---|---|---|
| Digitizer and stylus hardware | Pen sampling, touch sensing, hover detection, and pressure or tilt data | Usually limited to choosing a compatible active stylus and using the tablet’s supported pen technology |
| Android input processing | Delivery of MotionEvent data, palm detection, cancellation, and gesture handling | Navigation mode and keeping the stylus active before palm contact can reduce conflicts |
| Drawing-app processing | Brush engine, stabilization, layers, effects, and input handling | Enable pen-only input, reduce expensive brush or canvas work, and use an app that supports low-latency APIs |
| Rendering and compositing | Producing the new canvas frame and displaying it on screen | Use the highest supported refresh rate, close heavy apps, disable restrictive battery modes, and prevent overheating |
A faster display can make motion look smoother, but it cannot repair a low-sampling digitizer or an app that renders slowly. Likewise, Android’s motion-prediction and low-latency APIs are capabilities that an app must implement; a user setting cannot add them to an app that does not use them.

1. Use an active stylus and configure the drawing app first
Start with the pen the tablet is designed to support. Android can expose pressure, orientation, tilt, hover, and palm-detection data, but the drawing app has to consume those signals. A passive capacitive “rubber-tip” stylus generally behaves like a finger and cannot provide the same pressure or palm-rejection context.
Enable pen-only input or palm rejection
Open the drawing app’s settings while the active stylus is connected or nearby. Look under sections named Input, Stylus, Touch, Canvas, or Gestures. Depending on the app, the control may be called Stylus only, Pen-only mode, Disable finger drawing, Palm rejection, or Ignore finger input.
- Launch the drawing app and open its settings or preferences.
- Select the stylus, input, or touch section.
- Turn on the option that restricts drawing to the pen, if available.
- Leave finger input enabled only for navigation if the app offers separate drawing and gesture controls.
- Draw a few strokes with the pen, then deliberately rest your palm on the screen to verify that the canvas does not create dots, lines, or unwanted pans.
Labels and behavior vary by app and tablet manufacturer. If the app has no pen-only setting, look for a touch-action selector that assigns one-finger input to navigation rather than drawing. Some apps also let you assign two-finger gestures to pan or zoom while the active pen remains the only drawing tool.

Palm rejection is a coordinated behavior, not a permanent ban on all finger contact. Keep the active stylus close to the display, or touch the pen tip down, before placing your palm on the glass. That gives the system and app the intended pen context. If your hand lands first, Android or the app may interpret the contact as a finger gesture and move the canvas.

- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Android’s stylus documentation describes palm rejection as detecting an accidental touch and notifying the app that the latest motion-event sequence should be canceled. Apps can receive an ACTION_CANCEL event; on Android 13 and later, the platform can also mark canceled input with FLAG_CANCELED. Those mechanisms stop an unwanted touch sequence, but they work only when the hardware, operating system, and app cooperate.
2. Choose the highest supported display refresh rate
Open Settings and search for refresh rate, or check Display, Motion smoothness, or a similarly named display menu. Select the highest available mode while drawing. The exact label and available rates depend on the tablet model.
A higher refresh rate updates the visible frame more often, so a moving stroke can appear less smeared or stepped. It does not increase the stylus digitizer’s sampling rate, shorten a brush engine’s processing time, or guarantee a particular milliseconds figure. If the app is busy calculating stabilization or rendering a complex layered canvas, the display may still receive frames late.
After changing the rate, test the same brush and canvas at the same zoom level. If the stroke still trails noticeably, continue with workload and app checks rather than repeatedly changing display settings.

3. Remove battery and workload bottlenecks
Power-saving restrictions can reduce CPU or GPU performance, pause background work, or limit an app’s ability to render consistently. They are common causes of intermittent lag, especially on a large canvas with many layers.
Give the drawing app normal performance
- Open Settings and find Battery, Battery saver, or App battery usage.
- Select the drawing app.
- Choose the least restrictive option available, such as Unrestricted or Not optimized, if your Android version provides it.
- Turn battery saver off while testing. Re-enable it later if you accept the possible performance trade-off.
Menu names differ across Android versions and manufacturers, so treat these as categories rather than a universal path. Do not assume that unrestricted background activity will fix every delay; it only removes one possible constraint.
Close heavy work and check temperature
- Save the artwork, then close games, video editors, browsers with many tabs, screen recorders, and other graphics-heavy apps.
- Disconnect or pause unnecessary downloads and synchronization while testing a demanding canvas.
- Remove a thick case temporarily if the tablet is hot and test again in a cooler environment.
- Compare a new, small canvas with the original project. If the new canvas is responsive but the old one is not, layers, filters, brush stabilization, or canvas size may be the limiting workload.
These are troubleshooting measures, not guaranteed device-wide latency switches. Android’s latency pipeline means that a hot tablet or overloaded app can add delay even when the display and stylus settings are correct.

Try three-button navigation
- Open Settings.
- Search for navigation mode or open System and then Gestures or Navigation mode.
- Select Three-button navigation instead of gesture navigation, if the option exists.
- Return to the drawing app and test palm contact near the bottom and side edges.
If you prefer gestures, keep important canvas marks away from the gesture areas, use the app’s edge-inset or full-screen options when available, and avoid beginning a pan exactly at a system edge. A drawing app may also provide a setting that reserves an edge or changes how one-finger movement is interpreted.
5. Configure the app’s drawing, gesture, and stabilization controls
Once system conflicts are removed, inspect the app’s own behavior. App controls can have a larger effect than a display toggle because they determine how each stroke is calculated.
Separate pen drawing from finger gestures
- Assign the active stylus to draw and finger input to pan, zoom, or rotate.
- Disable finger drawing if you do not need it.
- Use a two-finger gesture for navigation when the app supports it.
- Check whether a shortcut, toolbar button, or accidental touch mode is switching the app back to finger drawing.
Reduce expensive stroke processing when necessary
Brush smoothing, stabilization, texture, real-time effects, and very large canvases can increase the amount of work required for every movement. If the pen feels delayed only with one brush, lower that brush’s stabilization or texture complexity. If all brushes lag on one project, temporarily hide heavy layers or effects and compare the response. Make these changes one at a time so you can identify the setting responsible.

Android Developers describes motion prediction as a library that estimates the user’s stroke path to reduce perceived latency. That benefit appears only when the application uses the relevant low-latency and prediction APIs. Android has also described APIs capable of reducing inking latency to as low as 4 ms in a 2024 Android Developers Blog example; that figure is an API capability demonstration, not a promise for every tablet, stylus, Android version, or drawing app.

6. Use a drawing glove only for contact and comfort
An artist glove can reduce friction, warmth, and incidental palm contact with the glass. It may make long sessions more comfortable and can help when an app’s palm handling is imperfect. It does not raise the digitizer sampling rate, speed up rendering, or reduce the underlying input-to-frame delay.
Use a glove after configuring pen-only input and navigation. If the canvas still moves with a glove, the cause is probably an app or navigation-gesture conflict rather than skin contact alone.
A practical testing sequence
Change one variable at a time and use the same short test: a slow diagonal line, a fast curve, a pressure ramp, and a palm-rest test on the same canvas. Record whether the problem is visual trailing, missed pressure, accidental marks, or canvas movement.

- Confirm that the tablet recognizes the intended active stylus and that its battery, if applicable, is charged.
- Enable the app’s pen-only or palm-rejection option.
- Keep the stylus hovering or touching first, then rest your palm.
- Select the highest supported refresh rate.
- Disable battery saver for the test and close demanding background apps.
- Let a hot tablet cool, then repeat the same strokes.
- Switch temporarily to three-button navigation.
- Test a new, simple canvas and a basic brush before changing stabilization or layer settings.
- Compare results with the original project to identify whether the workload is project-specific.
This sequence distinguishes accidental-touch problems from genuine rendering or hardware latency. For example, a canvas that moves only at the bottom edge points to navigation gestures, while a delay that appears only on a large, effect-heavy project points to app workload.
Compatibility checklist before blaming a setting
- Tablet model: Verify which active styluses, refresh-rate modes, and navigation choices the hardware supports.
- Android version: Input cancellation behavior and available settings vary by release; Android 13 introduced the
FLAG_CANCELEDindication for canceled input. - Stylus type: Confirm that the pen is an active model supported by the tablet, not merely a passive capacitive accessory.
- Drawing app: Check whether it supports pressure, tilt, palm rejection, pen-only input, low-latency rendering, or motion prediction.
- Canvas workload: Note canvas dimensions, layer count, filters, stabilization, and brush complexity when comparing tests.
- Physical conditions: Check heat, a thick case, screen protectors, and debris that might interfere with contact or comfort.
What each fix can and cannot solve
| Change | Most useful for | Does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Pen-only or palm-rejection mode | Stopping finger marks and accidental touch sequences | Lowering digitizer or rendering latency |
| Highest refresh rate | Smoother visible motion | Faster app processing or higher pen sampling |
| Battery and workload cleanup | Reducing frame drops caused by throttling or background work | Fixing an inherently slow brush engine or incompatible stylus |
| Three-button navigation | Preventing edge-swipe navigation from competing with the canvas | Improving general stroke latency away from system edges |
| Stylus-first contact | Giving Android and the app the intended pen context before palm contact | Replacing an app’s missing palm-rejection support |
| Drawing glove | Reducing friction and incidental contact | Changing digitizer, input, or rendering speed |
When the tablet still feels slow
If pen-only input works but strokes consistently trail on every canvas, the remaining limit may be the tablet’s digitizer, stylus protocol, display pipeline, or the app’s rendering implementation. If only one app lags, compare its basic brush and a simple canvas with another drawing app that supports the same stylus features. If every app shows the same delay, settings alone are unlikely to overcome a hardware or system limitation.
Keep the test conditions documented: tablet model, Android version, stylus model, refresh-rate choice, battery mode, temperature, canvas size, brush, and navigation mode. That information makes it possible to identify whether a future app or system update changes the behavior without confusing a workload change with a latency improvement.
