Set up a new Android phone in two passes: first move data while the setup wizard still offers transfer, then verify backup, account recovery, screen lock, updates, privacy, device finding, and theft protection. Do not erase the old phone until the new one contains the data you need and you can sign in to the Google Account associated with it.

Labels differ by Android version, manufacturer, model, and managed-device policy. Android 13 and later commonly place the relevant controls under Settings > Security & privacy; older phones may split those pages. Use the closest matching label on your device.

1. Prepare both phones before opening the setup wizard

Migration is least troublesome when both devices are available, charged, unlocked, and online. Keep the old phone powered on until you have checked the new one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Charge both phones, preferably above 50%, and keep chargers nearby.
  • Confirm that you know the old phone’s screen-lock PIN, pattern, or password. You may need it to approve transfer and backup actions.
  • Connect the new phone to a reliable Wi-Fi network. Wi-Fi is also useful if a wireless transfer or account recovery step has to continue after setup.
  • Make a fresh backup on the old phone before starting migration. A backup is a second recovery path if a cable disconnects or an app does not copy correctly.
  • Have the SIM or eSIM information available. If you are moving an eSIM, your carrier may require an on-screen confirmation or a new activation process.
  • Make sure you can sign in to the Google Account that will be used on the new phone, including any two-step verification method.

Google describes SIM or eSIM, Wi-Fi, Google Account, screen lock, and account recovery as core parts of the setup sequence. Complete those items even if you plan to postpone optional customization.

2. Transfer data during initial setup

When the new phone asks whether you want to copy apps and data, start the transfer there. Google recommends using a cable when possible. The transfer choice may only appear during initial setup, so skipping it can remove the simplest migration route.

Cable or wireless transfer?

Method Best when What to check Trade-off
Cable You want the most predictable connection between two nearby phones. Inspect the connector on each phone. A USB-C-to-USB-C data cable may work directly; another combination can require an adapter. Confirm that the cable supports data, not only charging. Requires compatible ports, a suitable cable, and sometimes an adapter.
Wireless You do not have a compatible cable or want fewer physical connections. Keep both phones close, unlocked, charged, and connected as instructed by the setup wizard. More convenient to start, but the transfer depends on the wireless connection and can take longer for a large library.

Transfer procedure

  1. Turn on the new phone and follow the setup wizard until it offers to copy apps and data.
  2. Choose the transfer option. Select cable if the ports and cable are compatible; otherwise choose wireless.
  3. Unlock the old phone when prompted and approve the connection or pairing request.
  4. Review the categories of data offered for copying. Select the items you want rather than assuming every category is selected.
  5. Leave both phones together and connected to power if the process is lengthy. Do not restart either device while the copy is running.
  6. Wait for the setup wizard to report completion before disconnecting a cable or moving either phone away.

A USB-C data cable for Android phone transfer is useful only if both phones accept its connector or you have the correct adapter. Check both ports before beginning; a cable that charges but does not carry data will not complete migration.

3. Check what the transfer did not include

A completed transfer is not proof that every file, account, or app state moved. Open the new phone’s app drawer, gallery, file manager, messages, contacts, and calendar, then compare them with the old phone while you still have access to it.

Items that commonly need manual attention

  • Files in the Downloads folder.
  • Photos, videos, or music stored in hidden folders.
  • Apps installed outside Google Play.
  • Data from apps that do not use Android backup.
  • Accounts that are not Google Accounts.
  • Some contacts and calendars stored with a non-Google provider or only on the device.
  • Custom ringtones and other sound files.
  • Certain device settings that are specific to the old model or manufacturer.

For each item, open the relevant app on both phones and look for a sign-in, sync, export, or import option. Keep the old phone untouched until you have confirmed that important two-factor authenticator records, locally stored documents, and app-specific data are available on the new device. The exact recovery method belongs to each app; Android’s general transfer cannot guarantee it.

4. Run and verify a Google backup

On either phone, open Settings > Google > All services > Backup. Review the account shown on the page, check the categories included, and select Back up now. A Google One backup can take up to 24 hours to finish, so a newly started backup may not be immediately visible on another device.

How to confirm the backup is usable

  1. Start the backup and keep the phone connected to Wi-Fi and power while it runs.
  2. Return to the Backup page and check the most recent backup time after processing completes.
  3. Confirm that the backup belongs to the Google Account you intend to use on the new phone. A backup under a different account will not restore when you sign in elsewhere.
  4. Check the new phone for restored messages, call history, settings, and app listings after account sign-in. Some app content restores only when the app is opened and signed in.

Use a PIN, pattern, or password rather than only swipe or Smart Lock. Google says a screen lock helps protect automatic and manual backups, and a lock is required for the strongest device-protection behavior.

5. Choose a strong screen lock

Open the screen-lock controls, usually under Settings > Security & privacy > Device unlock or Settings > Lock screen, then choose PIN, pattern, or password. The exact path varies by manufacturer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Lock type Advantages Limitations
PIN Fast to enter and works consistently with backup and reset-protection requirements. Short or predictable numbers are easier to guess. Google recommends a six-digit PIN or longer.
Pattern Quick to draw and easy to remember for many people. A simple shape or visible finger trail can reduce resistance to guessing.
Password Can provide the most combinations when it is long and unique. Slower to enter and easier to mistype on a small keyboard.

Choose a value you can enter without assistance after a restart. A forgotten lock can prevent access to encrypted content and may force a recovery or reset process. Do not rely on swipe alone if you want backup protection and reset protection.

6. Secure account recovery and factory-reset protection

Add the Google Account you will use for restoration, then open its account and recovery settings to verify that the recovery phone number, email address, and verification methods are current. Keep the credentials available before you wipe the old phone.

Android device protection is designed to prevent someone else from using a phone after an unauthorized factory reset. After a protected reset, the phone can require the previous screen lock or a Google Account that was already synced to the device. If you cannot provide either, setup may stop at account verification.

Before erasing the old phone

  1. Unlock the old phone and confirm the Google Account shown under its account settings.
  2. Verify that you know the account password and can complete any second-factor challenge.
  3. Check the new phone for the contacts, messages, photos, files, and app data you actually need.
  4. Run the backup action and note its latest completion time.
  5. Keep the old phone available until you have tested essential calls, messages, account sign-in, and any app that stores irreplaceable local data.

Only after those checks should you begin the old phone’s erase process. The exact factory-reset menu differs by manufacturer, but the reset-protection requirement applies independently of the wording used on that screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Make Security & privacy your first audit page

Open Settings > Security & privacy where available. On older Android versions, look for separate Security and Privacy pages. Work through each status card rather than assuming the phone shipped with every control enabled.

Install system and app updates

Check for Android system updates and Google Play system updates, then install any available update while the phone is on power and Wi-Fi. Also open Google Play and apply pending app updates. A new phone may have been boxed before the latest patches were released.

Confirm Google Play Protect

Open the Play Protect area and run a scan if the page offers one. Review warnings about harmful apps or unusual behavior. Apps installed outside Google Play deserve extra scrutiny because they may not follow the same distribution and scanning path.

Review account-security alerts

Read any warning about a new sign-in, compromised password, or missing recovery method. Resolve alerts from the account you are actually using on the phone; dismissing a warning without understanding it can leave recovery incomplete.

Audit app permissions and special access

Review permissions for location, camera, microphone, contacts, phone, SMS, photos and videos, and notifications. Keep access that an app needs for a feature, but deny or limit access that is unrelated. Also inspect special access pages for abilities such as installing unknown apps, displaying over other apps, unrestricted battery use, or access to all files.

Control lock-screen notifications

Decide whether notification content should appear while the phone is locked. Hiding sensitive content reduces what a passerby can read; showing full content is more convenient when you need to triage messages without unlocking. Apply the choice globally, then make exceptions for apps whose alerts you must see immediately.

Verify device finding

Check that the phone is signed in to the intended Google Account, has location and connectivity available as required, and appears in Google’s device-finding service. Device-finding status can be affected by account, network, battery, and administrator settings, so resolve any warning before relying on it.

8. Look for theft-protection controls

On supported devices, Android can offer several theft-response features. Their presence and exact names depend on Android version and model; a missing option does not necessarily indicate a setup error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Control What it is intended to do Availability or dependency
Theft Detection Lock Uses on-device signals to help lock the phone when a theft-like event is detected. Supported only on some Android versions and models.
Offline Device Lock Can lock the phone after it remains offline, limiting access when connectivity is removed. Availability varies by device and software version.
Failed Authentication Lock Applies a lock response after repeated unsuccessful authentication attempts. Look for it in the theft-protection or security settings if the manufacturer exposes it.
Remote Lock Lets you request a remote lock when the phone is not in your possession. Requires a screen lock, an active SIM, a verified phone number, Find Hub/device-finding enabled, and an internet connection.

Open the theft-protection section and enable only the controls your phone supports. Test that the account, phone number, screen lock, and device-finding prerequisites are satisfied; otherwise Remote Lock may appear unavailable or fail when you need it.

With gold-plated USB-C contacts, 86% high-purity tinned copper conductors, and a triple-layer shielding system (graphene + aluminum foil + internal shielding), it ensures reduced interference and consistently stable transmission

9. Check connectivity and everyday account behavior

Place the SIM or complete eSIM activation, then test a phone call, an outgoing text, mobile data, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. If you use multiple Google Accounts, check which one is the default for contacts, calendar, Drive files, and backup. A contact list that looks incomplete may simply be filtered to one account.

Open the calendar and contacts applications and inspect account sync settings. Non-Google accounts may require separate sign-in or permission approval. Do not delete the old account from the new phone until you have confirmed that its data is available through the provider.

10. Troubleshoot common setup failures

The transfer option disappeared

The copy prompt may be limited to initial setup. If you completed the wizard without transferring, inspect the phone’s migration or backup-restoration options and the manufacturer’s documented method before deciding whether a reset is appropriate. A reset erases data already placed on the new phone, so back up anything new first.

The cable is connected but nothing happens

Unlock both phones, reverse the cable ends, try another data-capable cable, and check whether an adapter is required. Some cables provide power only. If the phones still do not detect each other, use wireless transfer while both remain on the setup screen.

The backup time has not changed

Keep the phone on Wi-Fi and power, reopen Settings > Google > All services > Backup, and select Back up now again. Confirm that the selected Google Account has available storage and that the phone is not restricted by a work or school administrator. Remember that a Google One backup can take up to 24 hours.

A security or theft option is missing

Check the Android version, install pending system updates, and search both Security & privacy and the device-finding settings. Feature availability is conditional; a manufacturer, carrier, or managed-device policy can omit a control.

You cannot remember the old account credentials

Stop before factory-resetting the old phone. Use the account-recovery process while the old phone is still signed in and accessible. Reset protection can require that previously synced account after the erase, and a new phone cannot bypass that verification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

11. The safe handoff point

The old phone is ready to erase only when the new phone has passed three checks: the data you care about is present, the latest backup is recorded under the correct Google Account, and you can unlock and recover that account. Until then, keep the old phone charged, connected when necessary, and available for a manual export or verification.
