Before you leave coverage, download and test an offline Google Maps area, verify Wi-Fi calling, configure Emergency SOS, and decide whether Airplane mode should keep Wi-Fi or Bluetooth enabled. Keep Location Services on, save essential information for offline viewing, and connect to Wi-Fi long enough to finish updates. These steps determine what your phone can still do when cellular data and calls are unavailable.
Start with the right setup for your trip
“No cell service” can mean a remote area with no tower coverage, a deliberate choice to disable the cellular radio, or a location where only local Wi-Fi is available. The best settings depend on which capability matters most.

Menu names can differ by Android version, manufacturer interface, carrier, country, and language. If a path below is not visible, use the Settings search box for terms such as Wi-Fi calling, Emergency SOS, or Location Services.
Download and verify offline Google Maps
Save the area before signal disappears
- Open Google Maps while you still have a reliable internet connection.
- Search for your destination and open its place sheet.
- Choose More > Download offline map, adjust the rectangle to include the roads you will use, and start the download.
- Alternatively, open your profile picture, choose Offline maps > Select your own map, frame the required area, and download it.
Google Maps can provide offline driving guidance when the whole route lies inside the saved map. Downloading only the destination is not enough if the approach roads fall outside the selected area. Include the departure point, transfers, fuel or rest stops, and any road beyond the final town that you may need.

Understand what offline Maps cannot do
- Offline driving has no current traffic conditions and cannot offer live alternate routes.
- Offline transit, cycling, and walking directions are unavailable.
- Offline map downloads may be restricted in some countries or regions.
- A slow connection is different from no connection: the saved area can still guide you, but only within its boundaries.
Check storage and expiration
Maps normally store offline areas on internal storage. On Android versions that support it, an SD card can be selected as the storage location. Check available space before downloading a large region and remove old areas if necessary.
Offline areas expire and must be updated. Google Maps attempts an automatic update when an area has 15 days or less remaining, provided the phone is connected to Wi-Fi. Do not rely on that process immediately before departure: open Profile > Offline maps, check each area’s status, and update it manually while you still have dependable internet.
Perform a real-world test
After downloading, temporarily disable mobile data or use Airplane mode with Wi-Fi off. Search for a road inside the saved area, start driving navigation, and confirm that the blue location marker moves. Test the complete route rather than only the first few turns. Restore normal connectivity after the test.
Enable Wi-Fi calling if your carrier supports it
Turn on the carrier feature
- Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs.
- Tap the carrier SIM you will use.
- Choose Wi-Fi calling and enable it.
- Connect to a Wi-Fi network and place a test call before leaving coverage.
The switch may be absent when the carrier or plan does not support Wi-Fi calling. Providers can charge for calls, and rates or behavior may depend on the destination. Check the plan’s international and remote-use rules instead of assuming that Wi-Fi makes every call free.

Use Airplane mode with Wi-Fi only when appropriate
On supported Android devices, you can enable Airplane mode, then turn Wi-Fi back on and use Wi-Fi calling. Some carriers document this arrangement, but the exact calling behavior and rates remain carrier-specific. A test call from the same type of Wi-Fi connection you expect to use is the safest verification.
Use Airplane mode deliberately
Airplane mode initially turns off cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. It is useful when the phone is repeatedly searching for a tower, because stopping that search can reduce unnecessary radio activity. It is not a universal offline-safety setting: it also interrupts Wi-Fi communication and Bluetooth accessories until you restore them.
Keep the radios you still need
- Turn on Airplane mode.
- Open Quick Settings or Settings and switch Wi-Fi back on if you need internet access or Wi-Fi calling.
- Switch Bluetooth back on if you need earbuds, a watch, or another nearby device.
Supported Pixel and other Android devices can remember that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth choice for the next time Airplane mode is used. Confirm the icons and make a test connection before relying on the behavior.

Choose between connectivity and battery conservation
Leaving Wi-Fi or Bluetooth enabled allows local connections but keeps those radios active. Turning them off conserves more power and reduces automatic connections. Make the choice based on whether you need a saved network, accessories, or Wi-Fi calling; do not assume Airplane mode alone preserves every offline feature.

Keep Location Services available for navigation
Leave Location Services on when you expect to navigate without a network. GPS can provide the phone’s position even when cellular service is absent, while downloaded map data supplies the roads and place information.
Improve location accuracy when power allows
Android’s Location Accuracy can combine GPS, nearby Wi-Fi, mobile signals, and device sensors. Wi-Fi scanning and Bluetooth scanning can help apps obtain a more precise position, especially around buildings or when satellite visibility is poor. They also consume power and may be unavailable or labeled differently on some devices, so review the trade-off before a long trip.
Do not confuse navigation location with emergency location
Emergency Location Service or a carrier may transmit a location during an emergency call or text. That emergency mechanism is separate from the location marker used by Maps. Keep Location Services configured, but do not assume that an emergency contact will automatically receive your position without an internet connection.
Configure Emergency SOS before you leave
Set the action and local details
- Open Settings > Safety & emergency > Emergency SOS.
- Set the local emergency number when the option is offered.
- Choose whether the action starts automatically or only after confirmation.
- In Personal Safety, add emergency contacts and medical information where those features are available.
Practice the gesture or button sequence without completing an emergency call, so you know what the phone will do and which contacts may be notified. Availability of Emergency SOS and Personal Safety varies by device and region.

Know the hard limitations
- Android states that Emergency SOS is available on Android 12 and later.
- Emergency SOS does not work in Airplane mode or while Battery Saver is on.
- Real-time emergency sharing requires Wi-Fi or mobile internet.
These restrictions mean that Airplane mode is incompatible with relying on Emergency SOS. If emergency activation is the priority, leave Airplane mode off and avoid Battery Saver when possible. If you must conserve power, understand that the SOS feature may not be available until normal operation is restored.
Finish downloads and save information over Wi-Fi
While connected to a known network, update the offline map, install pending system or app updates, and save tickets, reservations, permits, addresses, and instructions for offline viewing. Open each saved item once with connectivity disabled to verify that it contains the barcode, confirmation number, or directions you will need.
Android can save Wi-Fi networks and automatically reconnect when Wi-Fi is on and a saved network is nearby. This is useful at a lodge, airport, or vehicle hotspot, but it does not create coverage where no network exists. Do not count on an unsaved public network for a critical call or download; connect and test it before depending on it.

Troubleshoot before departure
Offline map will not download
- Confirm that you are online and have enough internal storage, or select a supported SD card.
- Reduce the selected area if the download is too large.
- Check whether offline downloads are restricted in the destination country or region.
Navigation stops outside the saved area
Download a larger rectangle that includes the entire route. Offline driving guidance cannot continue when any part of the route lies outside the downloaded area.

Wi-Fi calling is missing or fails
Check the carrier SIM’s settings and ask the provider whether the plan and destination support Wi-Fi calling. Reconnect to Wi-Fi, then place a test call. If the carrier does not support the feature, use internet-based communication only where an available service and account support it; do not assume the phone can make ordinary cellular calls without a tower.
Emergency SOS cannot be activated
Turn off Airplane mode and Battery Saver, then revisit Settings > Safety & emergency > Emergency SOS. Verify that the feature is offered for the device and region, that the local emergency number is correct, and that contacts and medical information were saved in Personal Safety where available.
Location appears inaccurate
Move to a place with a clearer view of the sky, keep Location Services on, and consider enabling Location Accuracy plus Wi-Fi or Bluetooth scanning. Downloaded maps do not improve the phone’s satellite fix; they only provide local map data when a network is absent.
Final departure checklist
- Offline Maps covers the complete driving route and is not near expiration.
- The route works with mobile data disabled.
- Wi-Fi calling is enabled and tested if the carrier supports it.
- You know whether Airplane mode should retain Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
- Location Services is on and accuracy settings match your battery plan.
- Emergency SOS, the local emergency number, contacts, and medical information are configured.
- You understand that SOS fails in Airplane mode or Battery Saver, and that real-time sharing needs internet access.
- Tickets, reservations, directions, and other essential records open without a connection.
- The phone has sufficient storage for maps and enough charge for the trip.
With those checks complete, the phone has a defined offline navigation plan, a tested way to use available Wi-Fi, and emergency settings that match Android’s actual limitations.
