To stop harmful or unauthorized apps on an Android phone, keep Google Play Protect enabled, leave Install unknown apps turned off for browsers and other sources, and treat requests for restricted settings or accessibility access as high-risk. On a work or school device, the administrator should enforce these controls with Android Enterprise and Managed Google Play. Menu names differ by Android version and manufacturer, so use the Settings search box when a path does not match your phone.
What these Android controls block
Android’s built-in protections address two different problems. Harmful-app protection looks for malicious software such as trojans, phishing apps and spyware. Installation controls decide which apps are allowed to put software on the phone in the first place. Using both matters: a file can be installed from an apparently harmless location, while a malicious app can also arrive through a source that is not under Google Play’s normal review process.
Google Play Protect can warn about, disable or remove apps it identifies as potentially harmful. Google’s documentation says Play Protect protects apps installed from outside Google Play as well as apps obtained through Google Play. Google reports that it scans 200 billion Android apps every day; that figure is Google’s own current documentation, not an independent laboratory measurement.
1. Confirm Google Play Protect is enabled
Play Protect is the first setting to check because it provides ongoing screening rather than a one-time scan.

- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile picture or account icon.
- Choose Play Protect.
- Read the status shown at the top. It should indicate that the device is protected.
- Open the Play Protect settings (usually the gear icon) and make sure Scan apps with Play Protect is on.
- If your phone offers Improve harmful app detection or a similarly named option, leave it enabled unless your organization’s policy says otherwise. This allows Google to receive information that helps identify previously unknown harmful apps.
From the Play Protect page, run a manual scan after installing an app from a file, another store or a message attachment. A clean result means no threat was detected by that scan; it is not a guarantee that an app is safe for every future update or behavior.
What Play Protect can do
- Warn: show a notice before you open or install an app that appears risky.
- Block: prevent installation or stop an app from running when the risk is high.
- Disable: turn off an installed app so it cannot continue operating normally.
- Remove: uninstall a harmful app in cases where removal is necessary.
- Scan outside sources: check apps installed from direct APK files and other locations, not only Google Play.
Do not turn Play Protect off simply because a warning is inconvenient. If you believe a warning is a mistake, verify the developer, package source and purpose through an official channel before making any exception.
2. Turn off “Install unknown apps” for every source
Android does not use one universal “allow APKs” switch on current releases. Permission is normally granted separately to each app that might start an installation, such as a web browser, file manager or messaging app. Leaving every source disabled prevents those apps from launching an APK installation without your deliberate approval.

- Open Settings.
- Use Settings search for Install unknown apps, Unknown sources or Special app access. The exact wording depends on Android version and the manufacturer’s interface.
- Open the result and review the list of apps that can install unknown apps.
- Select each browser, file manager, email client, messaging app, cloud-drive app and similar source.
- Turn off Allow from this source (or the equivalent switch).
On some phones the path is Settings → Apps → Special app access → Install unknown apps. On others it appears under Settings → Security and privacy. If you cannot find it, search Settings for “unknown,” “install,” or “special access.”

Use a temporary exception safely
There are legitimate reasons to sideload an APK, such as testing software supplied by your employer or installing an app that is not distributed in your region. If you must do so:
- Download the APK only from the developer’s verified website or an organization-controlled distribution channel.
- Open the source app’s Install unknown apps page and enable its permission only for the installation.
- Install the APK, then return to that page and switch the permission off immediately.
- Open Play Protect and run a scan.
- Keep any Play Protect warning or restricted-settings warning visible until you have independently confirmed the app and its purpose.
Never leave the permission enabled for a browser or file manager as a convenience. Those apps can open links or files from many parties, so a future download could trigger another installation prompt.
3. Treat Android 13 restricted-settings warnings as a stop sign
Android 13 added protections for sideloaded apps that ask for sensitive device settings. A newly installed app may display a message saying that a setting is restricted and cannot be enabled from the normal screen. This is intentional: the operating system is trying to prevent a sideloaded app from quietly obtaining powerful access.

Why the warning matters
Restricted settings can expose sensitive capabilities. An app with accessibility-style control may read what is displayed, observe interactions or perform taps and text entry. Those abilities can be abused to steal credentials, approve transactions or defeat other security prompts. A request for such access is not proof of malware, but it deserves more scrutiny than an ordinary permission such as a flashlight needing the camera.
Review accessibility and other special access
- Open Settings and search for Accessibility, Installed apps or Downloaded apps.
- Review every service that is enabled.
- Disable services belonging to apps you do not recognize or no longer use.
- Search Settings for Device admin apps, Notification access, Display over other apps, Usage access and VPN; inspect each list for unfamiliar entries.
- Remove the app before disabling a security service if the app resists removal. A device-administrator entry may need to be turned off first.
Labels and locations vary by manufacturer. The important check is the permission itself, not the exact menu path.
4. Choose the safest installation source
Where an app comes from changes the amount of screening, update reliability and administrative control available to you. The following comparison describes the usual trade-offs; individual stores and apps can differ.

For ordinary personal use, prefer Google Play. If an app is unavailable there, weigh the reason against the additional responsibility of verifying the publisher, file integrity and update path. Do not assume that an APK is safe because it was shared by a friend or appears in a search result.

5. Lock down work and school phones with Android Enterprise
Personal settings are not enough on a managed device. Android Enterprise administrators can enforce DISALLOW_INSTALL_UNKNOWN_SOURCES, preventing installation from unknown sources across the managed environment. An administrator can also use Managed Google Play to maintain approved-app allowlists and blocklists.
What users should do
- Use the organization’s managed Play Store or approved catalog rather than downloading an APK.
- Do not attempt to bypass a warning, device policy or blocked-install message.
- Ask the IT or school administrator to approve the app, add it to the allowlist or provide an official distribution method.
- Keep personal sideloading on a managed profile separate from work data if the organization permits it; the administrator’s policy still takes precedence.
What administrators should configure
- Enforce DISALLOW_INSTALL_UNKNOWN_SOURCES for the relevant managed users or profiles.
- Publish required apps through Managed Google Play.
- Maintain an allowlist for approved software and a blocklist for prohibited software.
- Review exceptions regularly; a temporary testing exception should have an owner and an expiration date.
- Provide a support path so employees are not tempted to disable security controls to get work done.
Enrollment mode affects which controls are available. A fully managed device, a work profile on a personally owned phone and a dedicated device can expose different menus and enforcement scopes. If a policy appears inconsistent, ask the administrator which profile is managed rather than changing system settings at random.
6. Check an app before and after installation
Before installation
- Confirm the publisher name and compare it with the developer’s official site or documentation.
- Check whether the app’s purpose matches the permissions it requests. A note-taking app asking for accessibility control, SMS access and device administration needs a clear explanation.
- Read recent reviews for reports of unexpected overlays, subscription screens, battery drain or permission changes.
- Prefer a store listing with a stable update history over an isolated APK file.
- Do not install a “mod,” cracked app or urgent security update sent through an unsolicited message.
Immediately after installation
- Open Play Protect and run a scan.
- Review Settings → Apps → [the app] → Permissions and deny permissions unrelated to its core function.
- Inspect special access lists, especially accessibility, notification access, display-over-other-apps and device administration.
- Check the app’s battery, mobile-data and background activity if the phone offers those controls.
- Return to the source-permission page and verify that the browser, file manager or messaging app is no longer allowed to install unknown apps.
7. Remove a suspicious or unwanted app
- Disconnect the phone from sensitive accounts or networks if you suspect active abuse; avoid entering passwords while an unknown accessibility or overlay service is enabled.
- Open Settings → Apps, select the suspect app and choose Uninstall.
- If uninstall is unavailable, search for Device admin apps and deactivate the app’s administrator status, then try again.
- Disable any accessibility, notification, overlay, usage-access or VPN service associated with it.
- Run Play Protect and install Android and app updates from the normal channels.
- Change important passwords from a different trusted device if the app could read screens, notifications or typed information.
If the phone is managed, removal may be blocked by policy. Contact the administrator instead of factory-resetting the device, because a reset can erase evidence and may not remove enrollment controls.

“Install unknown apps” cannot be found
Use Settings search with “unknown apps,” “special app access” and “install.” Manufacturer interfaces place the control in different sections. On a managed phone, the setting may be hidden because an administrator has enforced the restriction.

An APK says it cannot be installed
Check whether the source app has Allow from this source enabled temporarily, whether the APK matches the phone’s Android version and processor architecture, and whether an existing version signed by a different publisher is already installed. Do not solve a signature mismatch by downloading a random replacement.
Play Protect blocks an app you trust
Stop and verify the publisher and download location. Look for an official, store-distributed version or ask the developer for a documented explanation. Avoid disabling Play Protect merely to complete an installation.
A restricted-settings control is greyed out
That is expected for some sideloaded apps on Android 13 and later. Confirm the source and developer first. If the app is legitimate, obtain it through an official store or ask the developer for an installation method that does not require bypassing the protection.

Send the app’s exact name, publisher and required version to IT. The administrator can review it, add an approved listing to Managed Google Play or provide an organization-controlled package. Repeatedly enabling unknown-source permissions may trigger policy alerts.
A practical maintenance checklist
- Keep Play Protect scanning enabled and check its status after major system changes.
- Keep unknown-app installation disabled for every source except during a planned, trusted sideload.
- Turn the source permission off immediately after that sideload and scan the installed app.
- Review accessibility and other special-access lists monthly and after installing any APK.
- Install Android security updates and app updates from trusted channels.
- On work or school devices, use the managed catalog and ask the administrator for exceptions.
- Investigate unexpected warnings, overlays, battery drain or new permissions before continuing to use the app.
These controls work best together: Play Protect supplies detection, per-source installation switches reduce opportunity, restricted-settings protections limit high-impact access, and Android Enterprise policies give organizations centralized enforcement.
