If an Android reminder is missing, check the reminder’s date and time, identify which app owns it, then verify that app’s notification permission, notification channel, alarm access, Do Not Disturb rules, and battery policy. On Android 13 and later, notification permission is off until you grant it. If an alert appears only after you open the app, battery restrictions or Doze are the most likely causes.
Start with a two-minute diagnosis
Before changing system settings, confirm that the reminder can actually produce a timed notification and that you are checking the application responsible for it.
Confirm a date and time
Open the reminder in the app where it was created. A Google Tasks item must have both a date and a time to generate a task notification. A task that has only a title, or only a date, can remain visible in the task list without producing an alert at a specific time.

Find the app that actually sends the alert
Google Tasks, Google Calendar, and the Google app can all display or manage task-related information. Google states that when more than one of those apps is installed, only one app notifies for a particular task. An apparently correct setting in Calendar will not help if Tasks is the configured notifier, and vice versa.

In Google Tasks, open Profile picture > Settings > Notifications and enable All Tasks notifications. Then repeat the test in the app that owns the item. If a task was created in another app, open that app’s notification settings as well; changing the wrong app’s switch has no effect.
Enable the app’s notification permission
Android 13 and newer
Android 13 introduced an opt-in notification model. An app must request the android.permission.POST_NOTIFICATIONS runtime permission before it can post notifications. If you denied the prompt, reminders can exist normally while no banner or sound is delivered.

- Select the app that owns the reminder, such as Tasks or Calendar.
- Tap Notifications.
- Turn on Allow notifications (the wording can differ by manufacturer).
- If Android shows a permission prompt when you next open the app, choose the option that allows notifications.
Check this at the individual-app level even if notifications appear to be enabled globally. A system-wide notification setting cannot override a disabled app permission.
Older Android releases
Earlier versions do not use the Android 13 runtime prompt, but the app can still be blocked in Settings > Apps > [app] > Notifications. Re-enable the app-wide switch before investigating battery behavior.

Inspect notification channels, not just the master switch
Android 8.0 and later divide notifications into channels (also called categories). A channel can be disabled or set to silent while the app’s main notification switch remains on.
- Go to Settings > Apps > [reminder app] > Notifications.
- Open Notification categories, Channels, or the similarly named section.
- Enable the channel labeled Tasks, Reminders, or Calendar events.
- Set it to Alert rather than Silent if a banner and sound are required.
- Open the channel’s sound setting and select an audible tone if the phone should play sound.
Some Android skins let you set vibration, pop-on-screen behavior, lock-screen visibility, and whether a channel may bypass Do Not Disturb. These controls apply to that channel only; changing a different category will not repair task reminders.

Allow alarms and reminders special access
On phones that expose this control, Android can separately restrict an app from scheduling exact alarms or reminders. Google documents this permission as a remedy for delayed or missing Google Tasks notifications.

- Open Settings > Apps > Special app access.
- Tap Alarms & Reminders.
- Select the app that owns the task.
- Turn on Allow setting alarms and reminders.
The menu may not exist on every Android version or manufacturer skin. If you cannot find it, search Settings for Alarms & Reminders or Special app access. Do not grant the permission to a different reminder app merely because its name sounds similar; it must be granted to the app configured to notify.
Check Do Not Disturb and Android Modes
Perform a clean test
Pull down Quick Settings and turn off Do Not Disturb and any active Mode, such as Bedtime or another custom schedule. Set a new two-minute reminder and lock the phone. If the alert now appears, the reminder app is functioning and a mode filter is suppressing it.
Permit reminders during a mode
- Open Settings > Modes > Do Not Disturb. Older releases may place this under Sound & vibration or Do Not Disturb preferences.
- Open Notification filters or the equivalent exceptions page.
- Allow reminders, calendar events, or the specific reminder app, depending on the choices your phone provides.
- Review schedules so Do Not Disturb is not activating earlier or lasting longer than intended.
Android’s Modes interface can block reminders and calendar events deliberately. A channel configured to override Do Not Disturb may still be silenced if the mode does not permit that category or app, so check both the mode’s exceptions and the channel’s own behavior.

Remove battery restrictions when alerts arrive only after opening the app
Understand the symptom
If a reminder appears immediately after you launch Tasks or Calendar, Android may have deferred the app’s background work. Doze extends battery life by deferring background CPU and network activity while a device is unused for long periods. Android documentation describes an exemption for apps such as Calendar that must deliver event reminders, but manufacturers can add their own background limits.
Test an unrestricted policy
- Open Settings > Apps > [reminder app] > Battery.
- Look for Restricted, Optimized, Unrestricted, Allow background activity, or a manufacturer-specific battery manager.
- For a test, choose Unrestricted (or the equivalent option).
- Set another reminder two minutes ahead, lock the phone, and wait without opening the app.
If the locked-screen test succeeds only after changing this policy, retain the exemption only if timely alerts matter more than the additional battery use. A broad exemption weakens the phone’s battery-saving protection and can increase background power consumption. If the reminder still fails, return to the notification-channel, mode, and alarm-access checks rather than leaving every app unrestricted.
Run a controlled locked-screen test
Use the same procedure after each change so you know which setting fixed the problem:

- Choose the app that actually owns the reminder.
- Create a reminder with a date and time two minutes ahead.
- Confirm that the app’s notification permission and reminder channel are enabled.
- Turn off Do Not Disturb for the first test, unless you are specifically testing an exception.
- Lock the phone and leave the screen untouched until the scheduled time.
- Check for a banner, lock-screen entry, and sound or vibration.
If it works with the screen on but not while locked, focus on battery policy, Doze, and mode filters. If it never works, repeat the checks for the other possible owner (Tasks, Calendar, or Google) and make sure you did not change settings for an app that is only displaying the task.

Start with the least invasive change: date and time, the correct app, permission, and channel. Move to special alarm access, mode exceptions, and finally a battery exemption when the symptom justifies it.
Manufacturer and Android-version differences
Settings labels are not uniform. On one phone, the path may be Settings > Apps > Special app access; on another, a search for Alarms & Reminders finds it faster. Battery controls may say Unrestricted, Don’t optimize, Allow background activity, or use a vendor-specific “sleeping apps” list.
Android 14 and newer generally present Do Not Disturb under Settings > Modes. Older releases may use Sound & vibration or a page titled Do Not Disturb preferences. Google cautions that settings vary by phone, so use the Settings search field when a path does not match your screen.
When a reminder still does not appear
- Check the clock and time zone: verify the phone’s automatic date, time, and time-zone settings, especially after travel or a manual clock change.
- Check account synchronization: if a task was created on another device, confirm that the same Google account is signed in and the item is present locally before testing notifications.
- Inspect every relevant channel: an app can have separate channels for task due dates, calendar events, and general updates.
- Review scheduled modes: a bedtime or work schedule can reactivate after your manual test, making the result appear inconsistent.
- Reboot after changing system policy: this can clear a stuck notification service, but it does not replace permission or channel checks.
- Recreate one test item: use a new, two-minute reminder rather than relying on an old recurring item with an unknown notification state.
There is no defensible published percentage for how often Android reminders fail. Official Android and Google documentation describes the permission, channel, Doze, and mode behaviors but does not provide a measured failure rate. Treat the controlled test as the useful evidence for your own phone.
