Yes, an Android phone can do useful Linux work, but “desktop Linux” can mean five different things. Termux provides a fast command line on Android’s Linux-based kernel; PRoot supplies a Debian, Ubuntu or Alpine-like userspace without replacing Android; Android 15’s Android Virtualization Framework (AVF) can run a Linux virtual machine on selected phones; Samsung DeX creates a polished Android desktop mode; and Ubuntu Touch or another mobile-Linux port can replace Android on supported models. The right choice depends on whether you need a shell, Linux packages, a virtual machine, a monitor-friendly Android desktop or a phone that is Linux-native.
What “desktop Linux on Android” actually means
Android is built on the Linux kernel, but that does not make an Android phone a conventional Debian or Ubuntu computer. The kernel is only one layer. A typical desktop Linux installation also expects a GNU userspace, glibc, standard filesystem paths, broad device access, a desktop display stack and hardware drivers that applications know how to use.
On a phone, those layers can be supplied in different ways:

- A userspace container-like environment: PRoot makes a distribution filesystem look familiar while Android remains the host.
- A virtual machine: a guest Linux kernel runs under Android virtualization.
- An Android desktop shell: DeX rearranges Android apps for a monitor, keyboard and mouse.
- A replacement operating system: Ubuntu Touch, postmarketOS and related ports adapt Linux to a particular phone’s hardware.
These approaches are not interchangeable. A command-line development environment can be excellent even when the phone cannot run a hardware-accelerated desktop. Conversely, a phone may offer a large-screen Android interface through DeX without running GNU/Linux applications at all.

How the main approaches compare
| Approach | Does Android remain? | Linux compatibility | Root required | Desktop display | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Termux native | Yes | Android/bionic-oriented programs | No | Optional, using Android display tools | Best command-line convenience, but not a standard distribution |
| PRoot distribution | Yes | Broader Linux userspace translated through the host | No | Possible with additional display setup | More familiar packages, with overhead and Android limits |
| AVF Linux VM | Yes | Cleaner guest-kernel and userspace boundary | No user root normally expected | Dependent on device and build | Only selected devices and Android versions expose it |
| Samsung DeX | Yes | Android applications, not generic GNU/Linux | No | Official monitor or TV workflow | Polished desktop shell, not a Linux replacement |
| Ubuntu Touch or other native mobile Linux | Replaced or substantially changed | Most Linux-native on supported ports | Usually a bootloader and device procedure | Convergence varies by device | Best Linux integration, highest hardware and app-compatibility risk |
Termux: the best first choice for Linux command-line work
Termux executes programs natively on the Android host by default. It uses Android’s Linux-based kernel, so shells, compilers, Git, SSH, scripting runtimes, local servers and many developer utilities work without rooting or replacing the phone’s operating system.
What Termux does well
- Interactive shells and command-line administration.
- Git repositories, text processing and scripting.
- Compilers and interpreters available through Termux packages.
- SSH clients and, where Android permits background execution, small local services.
- Keyboard-driven work when paired with a Bluetooth or USB keyboard.
Termux packages target Android’s bionic C library rather than glibc. A Linux program that assumes glibc, conventional service managers or unrestricted system directories may need a Termux-specific package, a patch or a different build.
A practical Termux setup
- Install a current Termux build from the official Termux distribution channel, and do not mix packages from unrelated builds.
- Update the package index and installed packages with
pkg update && pkg upgrade. - Install common tools, for example
pkg install git python openssh clang. Choose only what you need; phone storage and battery are finite. - Run
termux-setup-storageif you need Termux to access the user-visible Android storage area, then approve Android’s permission prompt. - Clone a project, create a virtual environment where appropriate, and test long-running jobs while the screen is on before relying on background execution.
Termux is not a normal Debian or Ubuntu root filesystem. Android prevents ordinary apps from writing to normal system directories, so Termux cannot present a standard Filesystem Hierarchy Standard layout without root. Software that expects paths such as /etc, traditional mounts, unrestricted device nodes or a conventional init system may fail even when its source code is portable.
When Termux is the right answer
Choose it when Android must remain intact and your priority is development, automation, remote administration or a lightweight local service. It is usually faster and less fragile than building a graphical Linux desktop on the phone.

PRoot distributions: Debian or Ubuntu-like userspace without root
PRoot implements user-space versions of operations such as chroot, bind mounts and binary-format handling. A guest program’s resource requests are translated before they reach Android’s host kernel. This lets you unpack a Debian, Ubuntu or Alpine filesystem and work with familiar package managers without unlocking the bootloader.
Typical installation path
- Install Termux and update it.
- Install the distribution helper with
pkg install proot-distro. - Install a guest, for example
proot-distro install debian. - Enter it with
proot-distro login debian. - Inside the guest, refresh packages with the distribution’s normal command, such as
apt update, and install only software that fits the phone’s CPU architecture.
The resulting environment feels more like Linux than native Termux: package names, filesystem locations and many scripts follow Debian conventions. It still shares Android’s kernel and permission model. PRoot is not a second kernel, does not grant hardware privileges and does not turn the phone into a server with unrestricted mounts or device access.
Graphical desktops under PRoot
A graphical session can be attempted through an Android display server or client, but the setup is more involved than a command-line guest. You must arrange a display protocol, a window manager or desktop environment, input handling and often an audio path. Hardware acceleration depends on the phone, Android graphics stack and the chosen display method; a desktop may fall back to software rendering and feel slow. Expect better results from lightweight window managers than from a full modern desktop environment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPRoot limitations to plan for
- System calls and filesystem operations have translation overhead.
- Programs that require kernel modules, privileged mounts, Docker-style isolation or direct device access generally will not work.
- Background daemons can be stopped by Android’s app and battery policies.
- Package availability follows the guest architecture; an ARM phone cannot transparently run every x86 desktop binary.
Android Virtualization Framework: a cleaner Linux boundary on selected phones
Google’s Android 15 release notes describe a Linux terminal environment inside a virtual machine when Android Virtualization Framework is enabled. The notes specifically identify Pixel 8, Pixel 8a and Pixel 8 Pro devices running Android 15 QPR1 or later among supported hardware.

This is materially different from PRoot: a VM has its own guest kernel and a clearer separation between Android and Linux. Android still controls the integration, however. Availability can depend on the exact build, region and device configuration, and a terminal VM does not automatically provide a complete accelerated desktop workstation.
Before relying on the VM
- Confirm the exact phone model and Android build, not merely the product family.
- Check that the Linux terminal or virtualization feature is exposed on that build.
- Allow storage for the guest image and its packages.
- Verify how display output, graphics acceleration, clipboard sharing, networking and suspend are handled.
- Test the workloads you care about; a VM’s kernel isolation does not guarantee camera, GPU or modem access.
For supported devices, the VM is attractive when you need a more conventional Linux environment but do not want to unlock the bootloader. It is not evidence that every Android 15 phone can run the same feature.
Samsung DeX: the easiest big-screen Android desktop, not GNU/Linux
Samsung DeX lets compatible Galaxy phones and tablets present Android in a windowed desktop-style layout on a monitor or TV. With a keyboard and mouse, it is useful for browser work, document editing, messaging, remote desktops and Android applications that scale well to a large screen.
Recommended Free Tools
Basic monitor setup
- Confirm that the exact Galaxy model supports wired DeX and that its USB-C port provides DisplayPort Alt Mode.
- Connect a compatible USB-C HDMI hub or dock to the phone, then connect the monitor or TV. Add charger power to the hub when required.
- Accept the DeX prompt or select DeX from the phone’s quick settings.
- Pair a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, or connect USB peripherals through the hub.
- Adjust display resolution and scaling in DeX settings, then test charging, audio and network behavior under load.
DeX is still Android. Its applications use Android APIs, not a general GNU/Linux userland, and a DeX window is not proof that Ubuntu or Debian is running underneath.

Samsung’s 2017 “Linux on Galaxy” announcement described a separate effort to run a preferred distribution such as Ubuntu or CentOS while Android controlled resources. That historical announcement should not be treated as a promise that current DeX versions universally run arbitrary Linux distributions.
Ubuntu Touch, postmarketOS and other native mobile-Linux ports
Native mobile Linux changes the operating system rather than layering a guest environment on Android. Ubuntu Touch’s convergence design aims for one experience across phone, tablet and desktop form factors, adapting to touch, pointer and keyboard input. UBports maintains a device catalogue and installer for models with supported ports. postmarketOS and other projects follow a similar device-specific approach.
Why the exact model matters
Support is tied to the device variant, codename, modem, display panel, bootloader state and available firmware. Two phones sold under one retail name can have different regional hardware. A port may boot while lacking a working camera, cellular data, suspend, sensors, GPU acceleration or proprietary firmware.

Safer installation sequence
- Identify the exact model number and codename in Android settings and on the device documentation.
- Read the project’s device page for current install instructions, known bugs and rollback information.
- Back up photos, authenticator data, messages and any files that are not synced elsewhere.
- Assume bootloader unlocking can erase the phone. Record recovery keys and export eSIM or carrier information before changing software.
- Use the project’s installer or documented recovery procedure; do not flash an image for a similar-looking variant.
- Test calls, mobile data, Wi-Fi, cameras, speakers, GPS, suspend, charging and external displays before making the phone your primary device.
- Keep the manufacturer’s recovery firmware and a return path available.
Native Linux is the option for readers who value Linux integration more than Android app compatibility. It is a poor choice when banking, camera quality, carrier features or uninterrupted standby reliability are non-negotiable.
Hardware for a phone-based workstation
USB-C HDMI hub or dock
A hub can combine HDMI, USB ports, Ethernet and charging, but it cannot create video output that the phone does not support. Confirm DisplayPort Alt Mode and the exact monitor-output behavior for the model before buying.
Portable USB-C monitor
A portable monitor makes a one-screen travel setup, provided the phone can drive it over USB-C. Check power requirements: some monitors draw more than the phone can continuously supply, so a powered hub or separate charger may be necessary.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Keyboard and mouse
Bluetooth peripherals are the simplest option. A USB keyboard and mouse through a hub avoid pairing issues and can be preferable for bootloader or recovery work. Pointer and keyboard input are central to convergence designs such as Ubuntu Touch, while DeX supports both for its desktop layout.
What commonly fails, and how to diagnose it
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| No image on the monitor | The phone lacks wired video output, the hub is incompatible, or power negotiation failed. | Verify DisplayPort Alt Mode for the exact model, connect charger power, try a known-good cable and test the phone with another display. |
| A Debian package will not install in Termux | The package expects glibc, standard system paths or a different architecture. | Use a Termux-native package, apply a documented port, or move that workload into a PRoot guest or VM. |
| A PRoot desktop is sluggish | Userspace translation and software rendering are consuming CPU. | Use a lighter window manager, lower resolution, disable effects and keep graphical work modest. |
| A daemon stops after the screen is off | Android battery or background-execution policy suspended the app. | Test Android battery settings, keep the workload foregrounded when appropriate, or run it on a remote server instead. |
| Linux boots but the camera, modem or suspend is broken | The native port lacks a driver, firmware component or device-specific integration. | Check the port’s feature matrix and known issues; restore Android if the missing function is essential. |
| DeX opens but a Linux application is unavailable | DeX is presenting Android applications, not a generic Linux distribution. | Use an Android app, connect to a remote Linux machine, or choose Termux, PRoot, a VM or a native Linux port for that workload. |
Which approach should you choose?
- Choose Termux for coding, Git, SSH, scripting and command-line servers while keeping Android unchanged.
- Choose PRoot when Debian- or Ubuntu-style paths and packages matter more than peak speed or hardware access.
- Choose the AVF terminal VM only after confirming that your Android 15 device and build support it.
- Choose DeX when your goal is a reliable monitor-and-keyboard Android workspace rather than GNU/Linux compatibility.
- Choose Ubuntu Touch or another mobile-Linux port when Linux integration is the priority and you accept device-specific bugs, a smaller app catalogue and possible loss of hardware features.
There is no universal one-click Ubuntu installation for Android phones. The practical path is to match the layer to the job, verify the exact model and firmware, and test display output and critical hardware before spending money or changing the operating system.
