Steam Link is the better choice for most people who already own a gaming PC. The Windows game runs on that PC, while your Android phone, tablet, or TV receives an interactive video stream. Setup is comparatively simple and compatibility usually matches the host PC. Winlator is better when portability or offline play matters more than convenience. It runs many Windows x86_64 applications locally on compatible Android hardware, but requires legally obtained game files, per-game configuration, and a device with suitable ARM64 and Vulkan support.
What you are actually choosing
These methods do fundamentally different jobs. Steam Link is remote play: the computer does the game’s rendering and processing, then sends compressed video and audio to Android. Your controller or touch input travels back to the computer in real time. Valve describes the process as: “Video and audio data is sent from your computer, while your controller input is sent back in real time.” The Android device is therefore a display and input endpoint, not the machine running the Windows game.
Winlator is local compatibility software. Its project describes it as “an Android application that lets you to run Windows (x86_64) applications with Wine and Box86/Box64.” Windows game files are installed inside a Winlator container on the Android device, where translation layers convert Windows and x86_64 calls for the phone’s ARM64 processor and graphics driver. There is no host PC in the play session once the files and configuration are on the device.
| Question | Steam Link | Winlator PC emulation |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the game run? | A Windows or Linux computer running Steam | On the Android device through Wine and Box86/Box64 |
| Is a network needed while playing? | Yes, between Android and the host computer | No for local execution after installation; this follows from the local execution model |
| How is the library accessed? | Games already installed in the host Steam library appear through Steam Link | You supply compatible installers or game files and configure each title |
| What determines compatibility? | The host computer’s normal game support plus streaming quality | Android CPU, Vulkan driver, translation layers, game engine, and per-game settings |
| Typical setup effort | Install the app, pair with the host, and connect a controller | Install Winlator, create a container, move files, select drivers, and tune the game |
| Best fit | Convenient play at home or anywhere the PC and network are available | Portable or offline play on sufficiently powerful Android hardware |
How Steam Link works on Android
The host PC does the heavy work
Steam Link captures the game running on the host computer, encodes the output, and sends it to Android. The phone does not need to emulate Windows or render the game itself. A modern gaming PC can therefore stream demanding titles to a modest Android device, provided the network can carry the stream with acceptable delay.

What you need
- A computer with Steam installed and the game installed on that computer.
- A supported Android phone, tablet, or TV.
- A network connection between Android and the host PC. Valve recommends a 5 GHz wireless router.
- A controller or a game that is comfortable with touch controls.
Valve lists the Razer Kishi, Xbox One S controller, DualShock 4 on Android 9 or newer, and Razer Raiju Mobile as supported inputs. Compatibility can still depend on the Android version, connection method, and the individual game.
Steam Link setup procedure
- Install the Steam Link app from the official Android app store.
- Start Steam on the host computer and leave the computer awake. If the host sleeps, shuts down, or loses its network connection, streaming stops.
- Connect the Android device and host computer to the same local network for the first pairing. A wired Ethernet connection for the host reduces one source of wireless congestion; Android can remain on Wi-Fi.
- Open Steam Link and select the detected computer. The app displays a pairing code.
- Enter that code in Steam on the host computer, then allow the connection if Steam requests confirmation.
- Pair a Bluetooth, USB, or supported wireless controller with Android. Test the buttons in Steam Link before launching a game.
- Run the app’s network test. If the result is unstable, move Android closer to the router, use 5 GHz rather than a crowded 2.4 GHz network, or connect the host by Ethernet.
- Choose a game from the Steam library and select Play. The game launches on the computer and its output appears on Android.
What Steam Link does not provide
Steam Link does not make a Windows game run natively on the phone, and it does not remove the requirement for the host PC to be powered on and reachable. It also cannot compensate for a game that the host computer itself cannot run. A weak network may produce blur, dropped frames, or input delay even when the host PC has plenty of graphics performance.
How Winlator runs Windows software
Translation layers instead of a full virtual machine
Winlator combines Wine with Box86/Box64 to translate Windows APIs and x86 or x86_64 instructions for Android. Graphics translation is handled through components such as DXVK and VKD3D for DirectX 9 through DirectX 12 support. The result is not a guarantee that every Windows game will work: each title may depend on a particular DirectX feature, launcher, copy-protection system, codec, or CPU instruction that the container does not handle correctly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHardware requirements and practical guidance
Winlator’s guidance lists Android 9 or newer, an ARM64 CPU, Vulkan 1.1 or newer, and approximately 6 GB of RAM as practical requirements for 3D games. Those figures are starting points, not a performance promise. Snapdragon devices with Adreno graphics are the most favorable target in the project’s guidance because their Vulkan drivers and available tuning options are generally better aligned with the supported configurations. MediaTek and Exynos phones can work, but the project warns of compatibility problems that vary by device and driver.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
| Hardware or software factor | Why it matters in Winlator | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Android version | Older system components may lack required APIs or fixes | Android 9 or newer |
| CPU architecture | Box86/Box64 needs an ARM64 Android device to translate x86 software | 64-bit ARM processor and operating system |
| Graphics API | DXVK and VKD3D rely on Vulkan for translated DirectX rendering | Vulkan 1.1 or newer, with a stable device driver |
| Memory | Windows games, translation layers, and textures compete for RAM | About 6 GB for 3D titles is the project’s practical guidance |
| GPU family | Driver quality and available turnip or vendor options affect compatibility | Snapdragon/Adreno is the most favorable starting point; MediaTek and Exynos may require more troubleshooting |
Winlator installation and game setup
- Install a current Winlator release from the project’s official distribution channel. Avoid modified packages from unknown sources.
- Open Winlator and create a container. Select a resolution appropriate for the phone’s screen; a lower resolution can reduce load and memory use.
- Choose the graphics and Windows components offered by the release. DXVK is commonly used for DirectX 9–11 games; VKD3D is relevant to DirectX 12 titles when the device and game support it.
- Move the installer or already installed game files into the container’s accessible storage. Use files you legally own, such as a backup from a store that permits it or a publisher-provided free demo.
- Run the installer inside the container, or point a shortcut at the executable if the game is already installed. Keep each title in a separate folder so that configuration changes do not accidentally affect another game.
- Set up a controller and map any missing buttons. Many PC games expect a keyboard and mouse, so create touch mappings only when a physical controller is insufficient.
- Launch the title and change one setting at a time. Start with a modest resolution, conservative texture quality, and a frame-rate cap if the game offers one.
- Record the working container, driver, and game settings. A future Winlator update or Android driver change can alter behavior, so a known-good configuration makes recovery easier.
Can Winlator run a Steam library?
Not in the same convenient way as Steam Link. Winlator’s February 8, 2025 guidance says Steam is not supported as a normal integrated-library workflow. Instead, it describes transferring legally obtained game files, including GOG backups or free demos, and then configuring those files in Winlator. A game bought through Steam may therefore be usable only if you have a lawful, compatible copy of its files and the title does not depend on a Windows-only launcher or service that fails under translation.
Steam Link remains the straightforward option for a Steam library because Steam stays installed on the host PC. The Android app presents the library that the computer can already launch; it does not require copying large installations to phone storage.
Performance, latency, and image quality
Steam Link performance is mostly a network problem
Because the host renders the game, Steam Link can deliver high-end PC graphics to inexpensive Android hardware. The trade-off is transport delay. Controller input travels to the host, the host renders a frame, and the encoded result returns to Android. Wi-Fi interference, distance from the router, competing traffic, and an overloaded host can add delay or cause visible compression.
A 5 GHz router is Valve’s recommendation. For the most consistent result, keep the host on Ethernet, use 5 GHz for Android when signal strength is good, stop large downloads on the network, and lower Steam Link’s stream resolution or quality when the connection cannot sustain the selected setting. Fast action games reveal latency more readily than turn-based or strategy titles.

Winlator performance is a device-and-game problem
Local execution avoids network latency, but every frame must be produced by the Android CPU and GPU through translation. Performance can change dramatically between two phones with similar specifications because Vulkan drivers, thermal limits, memory bandwidth, and game engines differ. A title may boot yet suffer from shader stutter, missing effects, audio glitches, or crashes after several minutes of play.
There is no authoritative universal FPS, latency, or percentage-of-games-working figure for Winlator versus Steam Link. Treat performance claims as specific to a named device, game, container, driver, resolution, and test conditions rather than as a general guarantee.
Controls, screens, and portability
Why a physical controller helps
Both methods can accept touch input, but most Windows games were designed around a gamepad, keyboard, or mouse. A telescoping Android controller such as the Razer Kishi gives handheld-style controls and is listed by Valve as a supported Steam Link input. It can also provide the buttons Winlator games expect, although individual titles may still need remapping.

Offline use
Steam Link cannot replace the host connection with downloaded video: the game continues to run on the PC. Winlator can work without a network after the container and game files are installed, subject to any game activation or online-service requirement. This is the main portability advantage of emulation.
Common problems and fixes
Steam Link sees no computer
- Confirm Steam is running and the host is awake.
- Place Android and the host on the same network during pairing; guest Wi-Fi networks often isolate devices.
- Disable client isolation or similar router settings that block device-to-device traffic.
- Restart Steam Link, Steam, and the router if discovery remains stuck.
The Steam Link picture is blurry or delayed
- Move to 5 GHz and reduce distance or obstructions.
- Connect the host computer to the router by Ethernet.
- Stop downloads, cloud synchronization, and video streaming on the same network.
- Lower stream resolution or bitrate until the network test is stable.
- Check whether the host is saturated by another application; streaming cannot fix a PC that is already dropping frames.
A Winlator game will not start
- Verify that the executable is compatible with the container’s Windows environment and that all game files were copied completely.
- Try the graphics backend recommended for the game’s DirectX version: DXVK for many DirectX 9–11 titles or VKD3D for compatible DirectX 12 software.
- Lower the container resolution and disable optional visual effects.
- Test a different container or driver only after recording the current working settings.
- Check whether the title requires a launcher, anti-cheat service, DRM component, or online login that does not function under Wine and Box86/Box64.
Winlator performance falls after a few minutes
Thermal throttling is a common device-level explanation. Remove a thick case, avoid charging heat when possible, lower resolution, cap the frame rate, and allow the phone to cool. If the same game is stable on another device but not yours, the limitation is likely the phone’s driver or sustained thermal envelope rather than the game files.
Which option should you choose?
| Your situation | Better starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You own a gaming PC and mainly play at home | Steam Link | It uses the PC’s full Windows compatibility and avoids reinstalling games on Android |
| You want to play away from home and can leave the PC online | Steam Link, if the remote network is reliable | The PC still supplies the rendering power, but upload speed, routing, and latency become critical |
| You need airplane, travel, or internet-free play | Winlator | Games can run locally once legally obtained files and a working container are installed |
| Your phone has Snapdragon/Adreno, ARM64, Vulkan 1.1+, and roughly 6 GB RAM | Winlator is worth testing | The hardware aligns with the project’s practical guidance, though title compatibility remains individual |
| Your phone uses MediaTek or Exynos | Try cautiously; Steam Link is safer if a PC is available | Winlator’s guidance warns that compatibility problems are more likely on these platforms |
| You want the least configuration work | Steam Link | Pairing and streaming are simpler than building and tuning containers |
| You want to experiment with older Windows software | Winlator | Local translation can be useful, provided the application and device are compatible |
A practical decision checklist
- Choose Steam Link if the game is already installed on a capable host PC, your router is dependable, and you value predictable setup.
- Choose Winlator if carrying the PC is impractical, offline play is important, and your Android hardware meets the ARM64 and Vulkan requirements.
- Use a physical controller for either method when the game expects analog sticks, triggers, or many simultaneous buttons.
- Plan to test one representative game before buying a new phone or handheld specifically for emulation. Compatibility is not determined by a single CPU model or a headline RAM figure.
- Do not treat a successful launch as proof of full compatibility. Check a complete play session, saving, audio, cut-scenes, controller input, and any required online features.
Final verdict
For playing Windows games on Android with the fewest surprises, Steam Link wins whenever you have a suitable gaming PC and a reliable network. It preserves the host computer’s normal Windows support and gives you immediate access to its Steam library. Winlator wins on independence: it can put compatible games on the Android device for local, potentially offline play without streaming from a PC. That freedom comes with legal file-management responsibilities, hardware requirements, and game-by-game troubleshooting. Select the method based on where you want the game to run, not on which app sounds more powerful.

Will Steam Link work over Wi-Fi?
Yes. Valve recommends a 5 GHz wireless router, and stability improves when the host computer uses Ethernet and Android has a strong 5 GHz signal.
Can Winlator use games I bought on Steam?
Winlator is not a normal Steam-library client. Its February 8, 2025 guidance instead describes transferring legally obtained compatible files, such as permitted backups or free demos, and configuring them manually.
What Android phone is suitable for Winlator?
Start with an Android 9-or-newer ARM64 device offering Vulkan 1.1 or newer and about 6 GB of RAM for 3D games. Snapdragon phones with Adreno graphics are the most favorable starting point in Winlator’s guidance, while MediaTek and Exynos devices may have more compatibility issues.
Is Winlator faster than Steam Link?
There is no universal comparison. Steam Link depends mainly on the host PC and network latency; Winlator depends on the phone’s sustained CPU/GPU performance, Vulkan driver, translation layers, and the individual game.
