Short answer: an iPhone paired with Apple Watch offers the most integrated set of documented cardiac, rhythm and safety features. Android with Health Connect is the more flexible choice when you want to combine watches, rings, scales and fitness apps from different companies. The phone is mainly the hub; the wearable supplies most advanced measurements.
Neither platform is universally more accurate. Results depend on sensor hardware, fit, algorithms, permissions, software version and country or region. Choose the ecosystem around the wearable and data-sharing workflow you will actually use.
What the phone measures by itself
A smartphone can collect a useful baseline, but it cannot continuously measure everything a wrist or finger-worn sensor can. The most important distinction between the platforms is where their built-in tracking starts.
iPhone: Health is a record and sharing hub
The iPhone Health app organizes activity, sleep, medications and other information in one place. It can receive data from Apple Watch, compatible Bluetooth health devices and third-party apps after you grant permission. You can also enter menstrual cycles, medications, supplements and body measurements manually. The iPhone itself is therefore best understood as the place where measurements are stored, displayed and shared rather than as a complete medical sensor.

Android: Health Connect has native phone tracking
Android Health Connect can generate three phone-level data types from device sensors: steps, estimated distance and active calories. Permitted apps can read those records. Active calories and distance are estimates, not laboratory measurements. Tracking begins only when the relevant permission is enabled. You can disable the built-in tracking in Android Settings; previously recorded data remains stored.
Health Connect also acts as a permission layer between apps. It does not make every app expose every metric: each partner decides which records it writes or shares, and two dashboards can show different values when they use different source data or calculations.
What iPhone Health and Apple Watch can measure
Apple’s current support documentation describes a broad first-party set when a compatible Apple Watch is paired with an iPhone. Availability varies by watch model, software version and country or region.

- Periodic heart-rate and overnight heart-rate measurements.
- High- and low-heart-rate notifications.
- Irregular-rhythm notifications and AFib History on supported models and in supported regions.
- The ECG app, which records a single-lead electrocardiogram that you can export as a PDF for a clinician.
- Heart-rate variability (HRV).
- Blood-oxygen readings on compatible models and in supported markets.
- Low-cardio-fitness notifications.
- Possible-hypertension notifications on compatible models and regions. Apple’s documented follow-up is to confirm the pattern with a blood-pressure cuff; the notification is not a diagnosis.
Apple summarizes the scale of the system with the statement, “Your heart beats over 100,000 times per day.” That is Apple’s explanatory figure, not an accuracy claim about any particular watch.
Sleep, recovery and temperature
- Sleep duration and sleep stages.
- A sleep score in the Apple ecosystem.
- Respiratory rate.
- Wrist temperature and temperature variation where supported.
- Overnight vitals and related trend views.
Sleep stages and scores are algorithmic classifications. They require the watch to be worn during sleep and can change with fit, charging gaps and software updates.

Activity, environment and safety
- Exercise and activity metrics, including routes when a workout records them.
- Daylight exposure.
- Environmental-noise levels.
- Fall history and fall-related safety records.
The watch supplies the sensors for most of these categories; the iPhone presents the history, trends and sharing controls.
Apps, devices and manual records
After permission is granted, third-party apps and Bluetooth devices can write categories such as weight, medication schedules or workouts into Health. You can revoke a category without disconnecting every other category. Manual entry is useful for information no sensor can infer reliably, such as a medication dose or a menstrual-cycle event.

Android’s advantage is interoperability. Health Connect gives each app a controlled way to share records, so you can combine products instead of committing every measurement to one manufacturer’s device.
Apple Watch data viewed through Google Health
Google’s current connection guide lists the following Apple Watch data when the connection and permissions support it: steps, flights, distance, energy, sleep duration and stages, exercise routes, weight, VO2 max, heart rate, HRV, SpO2, breathing rate, resting heart rate and temperature variation.
The same guide says several Apple-specific records are not yet available in Google Health for that connection: exercise minutes, stand hours, ECG results, irregular-rhythm alerts and full-day vitals. This is a data-sharing limitation, not proof that the watch failed to record them in its own ecosystem.

Other partner devices
| Partner | Google lists these shared categories | Documented gaps or limits |
|---|---|---|
| Garmin watches | Steps, distance, floors, energy, sleep, exercise summaries, heart rate, resting heart rate and weight. | Several detailed metrics may not be shared; the guide does not enumerate every omitted field. |
| Oura Ring | Steps, distance, sleep duration and stages, exercise, heart rate, HRV and weight. | SpO2, skin temperature and ECG-type alerts are among the gaps noted by Google. |
| Samsung Galaxy Watch | Steps, distance, energy, sleep, exercise, heart rate, SpO2, VO2 max and weight. | Floors, skin temperature, HRV, breathing rate, minute-level steps and health alerts are not shared into Google Health. |
| Withings watches and scales | Supported watch and scale records that the connection exposes. | Google explicitly says Withings blood-pressure data is not yet supported in Google Health. |
These lists describe what Google documents for each connection, not a promise that every model or software release will expose every field. A partner can add, rename or stop sharing categories.
Which platform is better for each health-tracking goal?
| Priority | Better-documented fit | Reason | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| ECG, AFib history and irregular-rhythm alerts | iPhone plus compatible Apple Watch | Apple documents the ECG app, AFib History and rhythm notifications in one integrated experience. | Model, software and regional restrictions apply; the devices are not medical devices. |
| Possible-hypertension pattern notifications | iPhone plus compatible Apple Watch | Apple documents a notification workflow followed by confirmation with a blood-pressure cuff. | A notification is not a diagnosis, and supported models and regions vary. |
| Phone-only steps, distance and active calories | Android plus Health Connect | Android documents native sensor tracking for all three categories. | Distance and calories are estimates, and tracking requires permission. |
| Combining brands and apps | Android plus Health Connect | Health Connect centralizes permissions and Google documents connections for multiple watch, ring and scale ecosystems. | Partners may omit metrics or calculate them differently. |
| Sleep | Neither phone alone; the wearable decides | Both ecosystems can display sleep duration and stages when a compatible wearable supplies them. Apple also documents a sleep score and overnight vitals. | Wear time, fit and algorithms determine the useful result. |
| Privacy controls | Different strengths | Apple emphasizes device and iCloud encryption; Google emphasizes granular sharing, export and deletion controls. | These are different guarantees. Check the exact app, backup and account data flow. |
Do you need a smartwatch or ring for accurate tracking?
You do not need a wearable for a basic step count, estimated distance or active-calorie total on a supported Android phone. You do need additional hardware for measurements that require optical, electrical or skin-contact sensors, such as an ECG, continuous heart-rate trends, overnight oxygen, wrist temperature or sleep-stage estimates.
A wearable does not automatically make a reading medically accurate. Sensor placement, movement, skin contact, charging interruptions and the device’s algorithm all affect the result. For example, a loose band can create gaps in heart-rate or sleep data, while a ring and a watch may classify the same night differently. Treat trend data as a prompt to review your habits or seek professional advice, not as a diagnosis.
There is no independent head-to-head statistic in the documented material proving that iPhone is universally more accurate than Android, or vice versa. Accuracy is use-case specific: the hardware, fit, software, permissions and region matter more than the phone logo.
How to set up iPhone Health correctly
- Pair the watch and update software. Complete Apple Watch pairing, then install available iPhone and watch updates. Confirm that your model and region support the features you expect, especially ECG, blood oxygen and hypertension notifications.
- Review Health permissions. In Health, open your profile and the Apps or Devices area, select an app or accessory, and enable only the categories you want it to read or write. A denied category will not appear even if the device records it locally.
- Add Bluetooth equipment through its companion app. Follow the device maker’s pairing flow, then approve Health access when prompted. Bluetooth pairing alone does not grant permission to write health data.
- Wear the watch consistently. Use a snug, comfortable fit for workouts and overnight recording. Charge at a time that does not create a sleep or trend gap.
- Enter non-sensor information manually. Add medications, supplements, menstrual-cycle events and body measurements in Health when automation cannot supply them.
- Check sharing before exporting. Review which categories an app can access before sending records to a clinician or another service. ECG readings can be shared as a PDF from the ECG workflow.
How to set up Android Health Connect
- Open Health Connect in Android Settings. The exact menu path varies by Android version and phone maker. If Health Connect is not visible, install or update the system component from the official app store.
- Grant app permissions by category. In Health Connect’s app-permissions screen, choose the fitness, sleep or device app and allow the specific data types it should read or write. Do the same for Google Health if you want a consolidated dashboard.
- Authorize the wearable’s companion app. Sign in to the partner app, enable its Health Connect integration and select the categories to share. The partner’s own app remains the source for metrics it does not export.
- Enable phone activity tracking. Allow the phone’s step, distance and active-calorie sensors when prompted. If you turn this off later, Android retains previously recorded records but stops adding new phone-generated ones.
- Verify the source and time range. Open the destination dashboard and inspect the data-source details. A missing metric may simply be unsupported by that connection rather than a permission error.
- Limit access when appropriate. Remove an app’s read or write permission in Health Connect instead of deleting your entire history. Export or delete data using the controls provided by the connected service when you no longer want it stored.
Why a measurement is missing or different
The device recorded it, but the dashboard cannot import it
Health Connect and Google Health do not expose every field from every partner. ECG, irregular-rhythm alerts, full-day vitals, detailed HRV, skin temperature, SpO2 or blood-pressure records can be absent even when the original app shows them. Check the documented partner list before reinstalling anything.

Permission was granted to the wrong app or category
Read and write access are separate. An app may be allowed to write sleep but not read it, or Google Health may be allowed to read steps but not weight. Reopen the platform’s permission screen and inspect each category.
Values disagree between apps
Google notes that partner values can differ because apps calculate from the data available to them. One dashboard may use raw sensor samples, another may use summarized workouts, and a third may apply its own filtering. Compare the same date range and source before treating a difference as an error.
There are gaps in overnight or workout data
Common causes include charging, an inconsistent fit, disabled motion or Bluetooth access, a depleted battery, or a watch left disconnected from its phone for too long. Restore permissions, charge the device, wear it consistently and allow the companion app to sync before judging a trend.
The feature is unavailable in your market
ECG, blood oxygen, irregular-rhythm notifications and possible-hypertension notifications can be restricted by model, software release or country. A missing menu is often a compatibility limitation rather than a hardware fault.

Apple says, “Your health data is encrypted on your device and is accessible only with your passcode, Touch ID, or Face ID.” Apple also says that, with default two-factor authentication, health data synced to iCloud is end-to-end encrypted so Apple cannot access it. Review which devices are signed in and protect the passcode that unlocks Health.

Google’s privacy wording takes a different emphasis: “You decide who you want to share your data with and what types of data you want to share.” Google says users can share, opt in, export or delete Google Health data and that Google Health data is not used for Google Ads. Those controls govern the Google Health service; a connected partner can have separate account, cloud and retention policies.
Apple says more than 350,000 people contribute health data to Apple Research. That figure describes Apple’s research program participation, not the number of people using Health or a measure of clinical accuracy.
Choosing the right ecosystem
Choose iPhone and Apple Watch when cardiac documentation is the priority
This combination is the clearer fit if you specifically want an integrated ECG workflow, AFib History, irregular-rhythm notifications, documented possible-hypertension notifications and Apple’s first-party sleep and safety views. Confirm model and regional support before buying for one feature.

Choose Android and Health Connect when flexibility is the priority
This combination suits households or enthusiasts who want to mix brands, move data between apps and control permissions centrally. Accept that the common dashboard may not receive every detailed metric from the original watch, ring or scale.
Choose based on the wearable you will actually wear
A phone ecosystem cannot compensate for a watch or ring that stays on the charger, fits poorly or lacks the sensor you need. Start with the measurement and wear pattern that matter most, then verify that the intended device exports that category to the phone you plan to use.
