Focus mode and Do Not Disturb solve different interruption problems. Focus mode pauses the distracting apps you choose: you cannot use those apps while it is active, and their notifications are suppressed. Do Not Disturb (DND) is a broader interruption filter. It can govern calls, messages, app notifications, alarms, media, reminders, calendar events, touch sounds and visual disturbances according to the people, apps and categories you allow.
Use Focus mode when the problem is opening particular apps. Use DND when the problem is the phone interrupting you, especially during sleep, meetings or driving. Both can be scheduled, but the exact controls vary by Android version and manufacturer.
The difference in one minute
Focus mode is an app-level control in Android Digital Wellbeing. You choose distracting apps such as social, video or game apps, then pause them. While paused, those apps cannot be opened normally and Android does not deliver their notifications. Other phone functions are not described as globally silenced.
Do Not Disturb is a device-level interruption policy inside Android’s Modes controls. Instead of selecting apps that you cannot use, you decide which people, apps and interruption categories may get through. Depending on your filters, DND can silence calls, messages, notifications, alarms, media, touch sounds, reminders, calendar events and visual interruptions. Critical system notifications may still appear.

That distinction answers the practical choice: if you keep opening an app, choose Focus mode; if alerts, calls or screen activity are breaking your concentration or sleep, choose DND.
Focus mode: what it silences and blocks
Its primary target is selected apps
Open Settings > Digital Wellbeing > Focus mode and mark the apps you want paused. Google’s Digital Wellbeing documentation describes the result this way: "When Focus mode is on, you can’t use these apps and won’t get notifications from them." The restriction is tied to the apps you selected, rather than to every notification or sound on the phone.
What happens to notifications
Notifications generated by a paused app are suppressed for the duration of Focus mode. They are not allowed to pull you back into that app through banners, the notification shade or other normal notification surfaces. Notifications from apps you did not select can still arrive, so Focus mode is not a complete phone-wide silence setting.

Normally, no. Android presents the app as paused and prevents ordinary use while Focus mode is active. That is the defining difference from DND: DND controls interruptions but does not generally stop an app from opening.
Does Focus mode block calls?
Focus mode is not a call-filtering system. It has no separate people, calls or messages rule comparable to DND’s filters. Do not rely on it to silence every incoming call. A calling app that you explicitly pause may have its own notifications suppressed, while the phone’s call behavior can vary by Android version, manufacturer and the calling app. If you need a predictable rule for callers, configure DND’s People filter.
How to turn it on immediately
- Open Settings.
- Tap Digital Wellbeing, then Focus mode.
- Select each app you want to pause.
- Tap the control to turn Focus mode on now.
The selected apps remain paused until you turn Focus mode off, a schedule ends, or you use a temporary break.

How to schedule Focus mode
- Go to Settings > Digital Wellbeing > Focus mode.
- Choose Set a schedule.
- Set the days and start and end times that match your work, study or family routine.
- Save the schedule and leave the same app selection in place.
Schedules automate the app pause; they do not turn the setting into a general call or alarm blocker.
How to take a temporary break
When you need one of the paused apps briefly, open the Focus mode controls and choose Take a break. Select the available time limit. Android temporarily unpauses the selected apps for that period, then restores the pause automatically. This exception is designed for a deliberate, time-limited check rather than unrestricted access.
Do Not Disturb: what it silences
It filters incoming interruptions across the device
Google describes Modes, including Do Not Disturb, as a way to "silence your device and to manage when and how you want to be notified." Current Android settings organize DND under notification filters. The available controls cover three broad areas: People, Apps, and Alarms and other interruptions.
People: calls, messages and conversations
The People filter determines which callers, messages or conversations may interrupt you. You can allow selected people or block categories, depending on the options exposed by your phone. This is the control to use when family, an on-call colleague or another specific contact must get through while other communication is quiet.
Apps: notification exceptions
The Apps filter lets you allow notifications from chosen apps while DND is active. For example, you can permit a work chat or navigation app without permitting every app on the phone. The exact list and labels differ across Android interfaces.

Alarms and other interruptions
Android’s current DND controls can separately address alarms, media, touch sounds, reminders and calendar events. Decide which categories are allowed instead of assuming that DND treats every sound identically. A bedtime setup might allow alarms while suppressing media and touch sounds; a meeting setup might allow neither.
Visual disturbances
DND can control visual behavior as well as sound. Depending on the device, you can prevent notifications from appearing over the screen while it is on or stop the screen from turning on when it is off. These settings matter when a glowing display or pop-up is the interruption you are trying to remove.
Do Not Disturb does not stop apps from opening
DND changes whether an interruption is delivered or shown. It does not pause an app or remove its icon. You can open social, video or messaging apps manually while DND is active, and an app may show new content when you launch it. Choose Focus mode when preventing access is part of your goal.
Critical system notifications
Some critical system notifications still appear regardless of DND filters. Therefore, “silent” does not mean that every Android message is guaranteed to disappear. The phone’s version and manufacturer determine which system notices are treated as critical.

Google Assistant and DND
On supported Android devices, Google Assistant can turn on Do Not Disturb to silence calls and notifications. Availability and the Assistant’s wording depend on the device and software version.

Which setting should you use?
For focused work or study
Start with Focus mode if the main failure point is launching distracting apps. Select the apps that tend to consume your attention, schedule the work period and reserve Take a break for a specific task. Add DND only if calls, messages or unrelated alerts also break your concentration.
For sleep
Use DND because sleep interruptions usually involve calls, messages, alarms, sounds and a lit screen rather than one particular app. Configure People so essential contacts can reach you, choose whether alarms are allowed, and disable visual disturbances that would wake you. Focus mode alone leaves the rest of the phone’s interruption behavior largely unchanged.
For meetings
DND is usually the better first choice because it can filter calls, messages, app alerts and visual pop-ups together. Set an appropriate duration or schedule and allow only the people or app notifications that the meeting requires. If you also want to stop yourself from browsing, add Focus mode for the meeting’s distracting apps.
For driving
DND can reduce incoming interruptions while you are on the road, but the exact automation and driving options vary by device. Configure the People and Apps filters before driving; do not adjust them while moving. Focus mode can prevent access to selected apps, but it is not a substitute for a phone-wide interruption policy.
For silencing only certain apps
Choose Focus mode when you want those apps both unavailable and unable to notify you. Choose DND’s Apps filter when you want to keep using the apps but control which of their notifications can interrupt you. The second approach is notification filtering, not app blocking.

Can you use Focus mode and Do Not Disturb together?
Yes. They address different layers of the phone. Focus mode can pause a list of distracting apps, while DND can filter calls, messages, other app notifications, alarms, sounds and visual disturbances. A combined setup is useful for a deep-work block in which you want both no access to selected apps and no unexpected communication. Configure each setting separately and check their schedules so one does not end earlier than the other.
How Android version and manufacturer affect the result
Android 14 and newer Modes controls
Some current Modes steps and filter names work only on Android 14 and newer. On these phones, look for a Modes area with Do Not Disturb, People, Apps, Alarms and other interruptions, and visual-interruption controls. A manufacturer may reorganize the same controls under Sound, Notifications or Modes.

Older releases may show variants such as Total silence, Alarms only and Priority notifications only instead of the newer Modes layout. Their exception rules are not identical to current DND filters, so an older phone may not offer the same People, Apps or visual options.
Different manufacturer menus
Samsung, Pixel, Motorola and other Android devices can use different labels, quick-settings tiles and menu paths. Even when two phones run the same Android generation, a manufacturer interface can change which categories are available or how exceptions are presented. Treat the labels on your own phone as authoritative and verify the result with a test notification or call before relying on it for sleep or safety-critical availability.
Troubleshooting common surprises
A paused app still seems to notify you
- Reopen Settings > Digital Wellbeing > Focus mode and confirm the app is selected.
- Check whether the alert came from a different app, such as a system service or a separate companion app.
- Confirm that Focus mode is currently on rather than merely scheduled for a later time.
- Review the phone maker’s Digital Wellbeing implementation if the app’s behavior differs from Google’s documented wording.
A call gets through during DND
- Open the DND or Modes settings and inspect the People filter.
- Check whether the caller is an allowed person, a permitted conversation category or an exception created by the device.
- Review repeat-caller or similar emergency options if your phone exposes them.
- Remember that critical system notifications are not guaranteed to be hidden.
Notifications are quiet but the screen still lights up
In DND, inspect visual-disturbance controls separately from sound categories. Disable notification pop-ups over the screen and screen wake on notification where those switches are available. Focus mode does not provide an equivalent global visual filter.
DND is active but an app opens normally
That is expected. DND filters interruptions; it does not pause apps. Add the app to Focus mode if preventing access is necessary.

A schedule did not activate
- Confirm the days, start time and end time, including the phone’s current time zone.
- Check that the relevant setting has not been manually turned off after the schedule was created.
- Look for overlapping Modes or Digital Wellbeing schedules that end or replace the state you expected.
- Because menu behavior differs by manufacturer, verify the schedule in the device’s own settings rather than relying only on a quick-settings icon.
A practical decision checklist
- Do I need to stop myself opening particular apps? Use Focus mode.
- Do I need calls or messages filtered by person? Use DND’s People filter.
- Do alarms, media, reminders, calendar events or touch sounds need separate treatment? Use DND’s Alarms and other interruptions controls.
- Is a pop-up or screen wake the problem? Use DND’s visual-disturbance controls where available.
- Do I want a recurring routine? Create a Focus mode schedule, a DND schedule, or both.
- Do I need a short exception? Use Focus mode’s Take a break, or adjust DND’s duration and allowed categories.
- Is my phone older or heavily customized? Check its actual menu labels and test the behavior; older versions may expose Total silence, Alarms only or Priority notifications only instead.
