Neither Android nor iPhone Emergency SOS is a universal winner. Both can help you contact emergency services and alert trusted contacts, but the activation gestures, setup options and eligibility for satellite messaging differ. Android guidance covers Android 12 and later, with features varying by phone; Apple’s satellite SOS requires an iPhone 14 or later and is limited by region and other conditions. Set up your phone before you need it, and check the exact options available on your device.
How the two Emergency SOS systems compare
| Feature | Android | iPhone |
|---|---|---|
| Basic availability | Google says Emergency SOS is available on Android 12 and later; options vary by phone, region, user, app and permissions. Google’s Android guidance. | Emergency calling is covered in Apple’s iPhone guide. Satellite SOS requires iPhone 14 or later and is subject to availability and restrictions. Apple’s iPhone guide. |
| Typical activation | Press the power button five times or more. Depending on the configured option, hold in the red circle or wait for the countdown. | Hold the side button and either volume button until the countdown ends, or enable rapid activation by pressing the side button five times. India uses a different procedure. |
| Emergency contacts and location | Emergency sharing can send configured information to contacts. Real-time location sharing requires Location Services, location permission and an internet connection. | After an emergency call, iPhone can notify emergency contacts and send available location information, with updates for a period after SOS mode begins. |
| Emergency video | Some Android setups offer optional emergency recording and automatic sharing with contacts after the video is backed up. | Emergency SOS Live Video may be offered when emergency services request it. It is for iPhone 14 or later, subject to limitations; services may retain shared media. |
| Satellite emergency messaging | Google’s current guidance names Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 9 Pro Fold in the US, excluding Hawaii and Alaska. Google Messages must be the default messaging app. | Available on iPhone 14 or later in Apple-listed countries and regions, subject to market and software restrictions. It requires no mobile or Wi-Fi coverage and a clear view of sky and horizon. |
Satellite messaging is a fallback distinct from an ordinary emergency call. A phone may be able to route a cellular emergency call through another available network, while satellite messaging depends on supported hardware, location and conditions. Do not assume either kind of connection—or every contact-sharing feature—will work everywhere.
Set up Emergency SOS on Android
Google’s general setup path is for Android 12 and later, but menus and capabilities can differ by manufacturer and model. Follow the options shown on your phone:
- Open Settings > Safety & emergency > Emergency SOS, then tap Start setup.
- Confirm the local emergency number your phone should call.
- Add emergency contacts and choose what information they receive.
- If you want location sharing, grant the Personal Safety app location access while using the app and ensure Location Services are enabled. Real-time sharing also needs an internet connection.
- If offered, enable emergency video recording. Choose whether videos should be shared automatically with contacts after backup.
- Choose whether SOS begins after a countdown or only after you hold to confirm.
To activate, press the power button five times or more. Follow your phone’s configured countdown or hold instruction; do not assume all Android devices use identical prompts. Google says Android Emergency SOS does not work in airplane mode or while Battery Saver is on.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Set up Emergency SOS on iPhone
- Open Settings > Emergency SOS and review the available options for holding the side button with a volume button or using five side-button presses.
- Open the Health app to add emergency contacts and complete or review your Medical ID.
- Confirm your emergency contacts and Medical ID are current before relying on them.
For the usual hold gesture, press and hold the side button and either volume button until the countdown ends. If rapid activation is enabled, pressing the side button five times starts the countdown. Apple documents a different procedure in India, so follow the instructions for the phone’s region.
After an emergency call, iPhone can notify emergency contacts and share location information that is available to the device, including updates for a period after SOS mode begins. Apple notes that emergency contact alerts depend on cellular service. Cellular calls and carrier Wi-Fi calling can also be affected by network, activation, compatibility or SIM-related limitations.

- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
What satellite SOS can—and cannot—do
Google Pixel Satellite SOS
Google’s current Pixel guidance names Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 9 Pro Fold for Satellite SOS in the US, excluding Hawaii and Alaska. Google Messages must be set as the default messaging app. If cellular and Wi-Fi are unavailable, the documented flow starts by calling an emergency number in the dialer; if the call cannot connect, follow the Satellite SOS option, answer the emergency questionnaire, and use the on-screen prompts to position the phone. You can choose whether to notify emergency contacts. Connection and response times vary with location and site conditions.
Apple Emergency SOS via satellite
Apple says iPhone 14 or later can use Emergency SOS via satellite to text emergency services when outside cellular and Wi-Fi coverage. Availability is limited to Apple-listed countries and regions and may depend on market and software restrictions. Try calling the local emergency number first; if the call does not connect and the phone and location qualify, follow the Emergency Text via Satellite questionnaire and aiming prompts. A clear view of the sky and horizon is needed, and satellite messaging is not a substitute for ordinary cellular texting.

Apple provides a satellite SOS demo that does not call emergency services. Use that demo to learn the prompts rather than placing a real test call. Google’s cited Satellite SOS guidance does not establish an equivalent user demo, so check the current Pixel settings and local official guidance.

Choose based on the phone you already own, the features it actually exposes, and the places where you expect to use it—not a claim that one platform is safer in every situation. Google’s Android instructions describe a broader operating-system baseline, but satellite availability in the cited guidance is limited to named Pixel models and a defined US area. Apple’s satellite feature covers iPhone 14 or later in listed regions, with its own restrictions. The available feature documentation does not establish a measured safety advantage or success-rate comparison.
