Android Earthquake Alerts is the phone notification layer; ShakeAlert is the USGS-led earthquake early-warning system that supplies messages from seismic instruments. In California, Oregon, and Washington, Android uses ShakeAlert data. In other supported locations, Android can detect possible earthquakes through a crowdsourced network of Android phone accelerometers. The same Android screen can therefore represent two different upstream systems, depending on where you are.

Android Earthquake Alerts and ShakeAlert at a glance

These names describe related but different parts of earthquake warning. ShakeAlert is a United States Geological Survey (USGS) system for detecting significant earthquakes with a network of dedicated seismic instruments, estimating the expected shaking, and issuing ShakeAlert Messages to authorized partners. Android Earthquake Alerts is Google’s delivery and detection service built into supported Android phones. It can display ShakeAlert-powered warnings in the three states where the USGS system is operating, while also using phone sensors to provide warnings in other supported regions.

Question ShakeAlert Android Earthquake Alerts
What is it? A USGS-led earthquake early-warning system and message infrastructure. A Google Android service that delivers warnings and, in many regions, detects possible earthquakes with phone accelerometers.
Primary detection data Dedicated seismic instruments in the USGS network and participating networks. ShakeAlert data in California, Oregon, and Washington; aggregated accelerometer signals from stationary Android phones elsewhere where the service is active.
Current U.S. geography California, Oregon, and Washington. Google’s 2024 U.S. rollout covered all 50 states and six territories, although the upstream source differs by location.
Wider geography U.S. program currently focused on the three states above. Google said on October 15, 2026 that the service had expanded to more than 200 countries and regions.
How a person receives it Through authorized delivery channels such as Wireless Emergency Alerts, partner apps, internet services, radio, television, and automated systems. Through the built-in Android earthquake notification, provided the phone is compatible, in a supported area, and connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data.
Is it one app? No. ShakeAlert is a message system used by multiple public and private delivery partners. Usually no separate app is required for the built-in Android alert.

Neither name means a guarantee that a warning will arrive before shaking. Both systems can miss earthquakes, and an alert can appear before, during, or after shaking begins.

What ShakeAlert does

ShakeAlert monitors earthquake waves recorded by seismic instruments. When the system determines that a significant earthquake is occurring, it creates ShakeAlert Messages describing the event and the expected strong shaking. Authorized partners then turn those messages into warnings suited to their channels.

The detection and message path

  1. Seismic instruments detect the earthquake and send measurements to the ShakeAlert processing system.
  2. USGS processing estimates the earthquake’s location, size, and likely shaking distribution.
  3. ShakeAlert Messages are issued to authorized partners when the criteria for a warning are met.
  4. Partners deliver the message through channels such as Wireless Emergency Alerts, the MyShake app, Google’s Android integration, ShakeReadySD in San Diego, and other approved services. Some partners also use cellular, internet, radio, television, or automated control systems.

ShakeAlert is therefore not a consumer app that everyone must install. It is the warning source and infrastructure behind several products and public-alert routes.

Where ShakeAlert is active

The current USGS ShakeAlert program covers California, Oregon, and Washington. If an earthquake crosses a state border, Android Help says the phone receives alerts from the system authorized for the state in which the phone is located. That means two phones near a border can potentially be handled through different state delivery arrangements.

What Android Earthquake Alerts does

Android Earthquake Alerts combines Google’s notification system with phone-based detection. Supported Android phones contain accelerometers that can sense vibrations. When a phone is stationary, its sensor data can contribute to Google’s aggregated analysis of whether an earthquake may be occurring and which nearby devices should be warned.

Android in the three ShakeAlert states

In California, Oregon, and Washington, Google’s Android warning is based on ShakeAlert data. Google has described this integration as a partnership with USGS, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, and the ShakeAlert system that began in 2020. Android is the presentation and delivery experience on the phone; the upstream earthquake information comes from ShakeAlert’s seismic network.

Android outside the ShakeAlert states

Where ShakeAlert is not the authorized source, Android can use its own crowdsourced network of phone accelerometers, where the Android Earthquake Alerts System is active. Google analyzes aggregated signals to estimate whether an earthquake is happening and identify nearby phones that may experience shaking. This gives Android a broader international footprint than the current U.S. ShakeAlert program.

Google’s October 15, 2026 product update said Android Earthquake Alerts had grown from 98 countries and regions to more than 200 and had sent more than one billion alerts since its 2021 launch. Those are Google’s service-level figures, not a promise that every location has identical coverage, thresholds, language, or delivery performance. Coverage can change, so check the current supported-country information and the settings on the phone you are using.

Does Android use ShakeAlert?

Yes, but only in the places where Google has integrated it with ShakeAlert. In California, Oregon, and Washington, Android earthquake warnings are ShakeAlert-based. Elsewhere, an Android warning may come from Google’s phone-sensor detection system or from another locally authorized arrangement. It is incorrect to call every Android earthquake alert a ShakeAlert alert.

The visible Android notification does not necessarily tell you which upstream detector produced it. Location determines the routing, and an event that crosses a state boundary can be handled by the system authorized for each state.

How the two systems detect an earthquake

Stage ShakeAlert approach Android Earthquake Alerts approach
Sensor network Dedicated seismic instruments operated through the USGS-led earthquake-monitoring network. Built-in accelerometers in participating Android phones, especially phones that are stationary.
Analysis USGS processing estimates the event and expected strong shaking, then produces ShakeAlert Messages. Google aggregates phone signals to estimate whether an earthquake is occurring and which nearby devices may need a warning.
Public delivery Authorized partners choose channels such as Wireless Emergency Alerts, apps, websites, radio, television, or automated systems. Google presents the warning through the Android operating system’s earthquake-alert experience.
Geographic logic Built around the ShakeAlert service area and state-authorized partners. Uses ShakeAlert in the three participating states and Google’s own system in other supported countries and regions.

The systems can complement each other, but they are not interchangeable. A phone-sensor network has a different distribution of sensors and different processing path from a dedicated seismic network. Neither source can detect every earthquake or predict the exact shaking at every address.

Android alert levels and what to do

Google’s October 2026 update describes three Android alert levels. The labels communicate the estimated intensity of shaking at the phone’s location, not a guaranteed measurement of the earthquake’s final magnitude.

Be Aware

Be Aware is a heads-up for estimated light shaking. Use the notice to orient yourself, move away from obvious hazards, and be ready to protect yourself if shaking increases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Be Ready

Be Ready indicates stronger expected shaking. Prepare to take protective action immediately, check the safety guidance shown on the phone, and avoid moving toward windows, shelves, or other falling hazards.

Take Action

Take Action is the full-screen warning for estimated moderate to heavy shaking. Follow the on-screen safety instruction, generally Drop, Cover, and Hold On, rather than trying to run outside while the ground is moving.

Alert names are subject to staged software rollout. Earlier Google U.S. material described only Be Aware and Take Action and referred to earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or greater. That historical threshold should not be treated as a universal promise for every current alert or every country. The label and wording displayed on your phone are the operative instructions.

How to turn on earthquake alerts on Android

Android Help says earthquake alerts are on by default where the feature is supported. You can verify or change the setting as follows:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Safety & emergency.
  3. Tap Earthquake alerts.
  4. Turn the feature on or off, then review any explanatory text shown for your device and region.

The phone needs Wi-Fi or mobile data to receive the alert. The menu and availability can vary by Android version, manufacturer, country, and carrier. If Earthquake alerts is missing, first check whether the phone and country are supported and whether the device is connected to a data network.

Do you need the MyShake app if you have Android?

Not necessarily. The built-in Android Earthquake Alerts feature is a separate delivery route and normally does not require installing MyShake. MyShake is one of the authorized partner channels that can distribute ShakeAlert warnings, so it can provide an additional way to receive information, particularly for people who want a dedicated app’s settings or coverage details. Installing it does not convert an Android alert outside the ShakeAlert states into a ShakeAlert alert.

ShakeAlert itself is not a single app. Depending on your location, warnings can also arrive through Wireless Emergency Alerts or other authorized services. If you use more than one channel, expect that messages may have different wording or arrive at slightly different times.

Why an Android earthquake alert may arrive after shaking starts

Google explicitly warns that an alert may arrive before, during, or after shaking begins. Several factors explain why the notification is not always early:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Distance to the earthquake: People close to the source may feel the strongest waves before a warning can be processed and delivered.
  • Detection and estimation: The system must first recognize the event and estimate its location and shaking. Early estimates can contain errors.
  • Network delivery: Wi-Fi or mobile-data congestion, a weak signal, airplane mode, or an offline phone can delay or prevent delivery.
  • Coverage gaps: Not every earthquake is detectable, and not every location is supported.
  • Event characteristics: The alert may be generated for an earthquake that ultimately produces different shaking from the initial estimate.

An alert that arrives after the first jolt is not proof that the feature malfunctioned. Early-warning systems are designed to provide an opportunity for protective action when possible, not a guaranteed lead time for every person.

Coverage, requirements, and privacy

Geographic coverage

Google announced a U.S. rollout covering all 50 states and six U.S. territories in 2024. That statement describes availability of the Android service, not identical use of ShakeAlert in all those places. ShakeAlert-based Android warnings remain associated with California, Oregon, and Washington. Google’s October 2026 update reported availability in more than 200 countries and regions worldwide.

Phone and connection requirements

  • A compatible Android phone with the earthquake-alert setting available.
  • A location where Android Earthquake Alerts is supported.
  • Wi-Fi or mobile data for the alert to reach the device.
  • Permission for the service to use the phone’s approximate location to decide which devices should receive a warning.

Google says coarse location is used for alert targeting and is not used to identify or locate a specific user. The service still depends on the phone being powered, connected, and able to communicate with Google’s systems.

Coverage is not a guarantee

Google states that earthquake alerts are not supported everywhere, that some earthquakes cannot be detected, and that magnitude and shaking estimates may be wrong. Treat the alert as one part of an emergency plan, not as a replacement for local emergency instructions, building safety, or preparedness supplies.

ShakeAlert versus the USGS Earthquake Notification Service

The USGS offers an Earthquake Notification Service (ENS), but ENS is not an early-warning system. ENS sends customizable email or text notifications after earthquakes occur in an area selected by the subscriber. ShakeAlert, by contrast, monitors for significant earthquakes and issues messages warning that strong shaking is expected imminently.

Service Purpose Typical timing
ShakeAlert Early warning of expected strong shaking, delivered through authorized partners. While an earthquake is occurring, when detection and processing permit.
USGS Earthquake Notification Service (ENS) Customizable information about earthquakes in a chosen area. After an earthquake is detected; it is not an early-warning service.
Android Earthquake Alerts Built-in Android warning using ShakeAlert in three states or Google’s phone-sensor system elsewhere. Before, during, or after shaking, depending on detection, distance, coverage, and connectivity.

What to do when an alert appears

  1. Read the alert level and the location information on the screen.
  2. Immediately follow the displayed safety instruction, normally Drop, Cover, and Hold On.
  3. Stay away from windows, glass, tall furniture, and objects that can fall.
  4. Remain protected until the shaking stops, then check for injuries and hazards.
  5. Use official local emergency information for evacuation, tsunami, fire, gas, or infrastructure instructions.

Do not wait for a second notification before taking cover. Do not assume that a quiet phone means there is no earthquake; alert availability depends on detection, coverage, connectivity, and the phone’s condition.

Preparedness that works with either system

An alert can give you a moment to protect yourself, but it cannot create supplies or repair an unsafe building. USGS preparedness guidance recommends organizing disaster supplies and making an ordinary earthquake plan. Keep water, food, medication, a flashlight, batteries or charging equipment, first-aid materials, and essential documents where they can be reached after shaking. Decide how household members will reconnect and learn the safest protected locations in each room.

An emergency kit does not improve alert accuracy or delivery. It reduces the consequences when an alert is late, unavailable, or followed by aftershocks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which system is better?

That comparison has no single winner because the systems solve different parts of the problem. ShakeAlert’s dedicated seismic network is the upstream source for the three-state U.S. program and feeds many delivery partners. Android Earthquake Alerts makes warning convenient by putting a notification on supported phones and extends earthquake detection and alerting to many regions outside the ShakeAlert footprint.

For an Android user in California, Oregon, or Washington, the practical experience combines both: ShakeAlert detects and issues the message, and Android displays it. For an Android user elsewhere, the warning may be generated by Google’s crowdsourced phone-sensor network. In either case, keep alerts enabled, maintain a data connection when possible, and rely on Drop, Cover, and Hold On plus broader earthquake preparedness rather than assuming a warning will always precede the first movement.
