If your Android phone did not warn you, first check Settings > Safety & emergency > Earthquake alerts (or Location > Advanced > Earthquake alerts), then turn on both location and Wi‑Fi or mobile data. The feature is country-dependent, can miss earthquakes, and may notify you before, during, or after shaking. Wireless Emergency Alerts are a separate, higher-priority channel that should be checked as well.

What Android Earthquake Alerts can—and cannot—do

Android Earthquake Alerts uses participating Android phones and Google’s detection system to estimate whether nearby shaking warrants a warning. It is a supplemental service, not a guarantee that every earthquake will be detected or every supported phone will receive a message.

  • Coverage is geographic. Google says Earthquake Alerts are not supported in all areas. A phone can have the switch enabled and still receive nothing if it is outside a supported country or region.
  • Connectivity and location matter. The service needs Wi‑Fi or mobile-data connectivity and an enabled location setting so it can use approximate location to decide which devices should be notified.
  • Detection is imperfect. Google warns that not all earthquakes can be detected and that magnitude and shaking-intensity estimates can contain errors.
  • Timing is variable. You may receive an alert before shaking starts, while it is happening, or after it begins. A late message does not automatically mean the phone is broken.
  • It is not the only warning channel. Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA), including Emergency Alert System messages where used, are separate and take priority over Earthquake Alerts in the notification hierarchy.

Google reported in 2026 that Android Earthquake Alerts had sent more than one billion alerts since launching in 2021 and had expanded to more than 200 regions. Those figures describe the global system, not guaranteed availability or performance at a particular address.

Use this five-minute recovery sequence

Work through these checks in order. After each change, leave the phone connected and unlocked long enough for settings to synchronize; do not rely on a test earthquake to confirm the service.

  1. Open the Earthquake Alerts setting. In Settings, tap Safety & emergency > Earthquake alerts. If that menu is missing, try Location > Advanced > Earthquake alerts. Turn the switch on.
  2. Restore an internet connection. Enable Wi‑Fi or mobile data. Airplane mode, a disabled SIM data connection, a disconnected Wi‑Fi network, or a restrictive network can prevent delivery.
  3. Enable location. Turn on the phone’s Location setting. Android uses approximate location for alert targeting; you do not need to provide a precise address for this purpose.
  4. Confirm that your country or region is supported. Check Google’s current supported-country list and compare it with the phone’s actual location. Moving across a border can change availability.
  5. Review Wireless Emergency Alerts separately. Open Settings > Notifications > Wireless emergency alerts. Check that relevant alert categories, sound, vibration, notification history, and test-alert controls match your needs. Manufacturers and Android releases may use different labels.

If all five checks pass and you still missed a warning, the event may have been outside detection or coverage limits rather than a local phone failure.

Find and enable Earthquake Alerts

Primary path: Safety & emergency

On many Android phones, open Settings, select Safety & emergency, and tap Earthquake alerts. Turn the control on if it is off. This setting is independent of the broader notification-permission screens used by ordinary apps.

Fallback path: Location settings

If Safety & emergency is not listed, open Settings > Location > Advanced > Earthquake alerts. The exact wording and placement can vary by manufacturer and Android release. Use the Settings search field for “earthquake” if neither path is visible.

When the control is absent

An absent menu is not proof that the phone is defective. It can indicate that the feature is unavailable in the current country or region, that the device software uses a different menu structure, or that the manufacturer has not exposed the setting in that build. Verify geography first, then check for system updates supplied through the phone’s normal update screen. Do not install an unrelated alert app and assume it provides the same service.

Why connectivity determines whether an alert arrives

Google’s launch guidance says Android Earthquake Alerts requires Wi‑Fi and/or cellular-data connectivity. The phone must be able to communicate with the service and receive the notification at the time the event is processed.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Wi‑Fi checks

  • Open the quick settings panel and confirm Wi‑Fi is on and connected to a network, not merely enabled.
  • Open a normal webpage or another network-dependent service to verify that the connection actually reaches the internet.
  • If a public or captive-portal network requires a sign-in page, switch temporarily to working mobile data or another trusted Wi‑Fi network.

Mobile-data checks

  • Confirm Mobile data is enabled and that the phone has service from its carrier.
  • Check whether a data limit, Data Saver rule, roaming restriction, or account suspension has disabled background connectivity.
  • If you use dual SIMs, verify that one SIM is selected for data and has an active connection.

Airplane mode and intermittent service

Airplane mode disables the radio connections an internet alert needs. Turn it off, wait for the phone to reconnect, and then recheck the Earthquake Alerts switch. A phone that loses service during an event may receive a notification late or not at all; restoring service afterward cannot recreate a warning that was never delivered.

Why location must be enabled

Android uses approximate location to determine which devices should receive an alert. If Location is off, the phone may not be able to establish that it is in the affected area even when internet access works.

  1. Open Settings > Location.
  2. Turn on Use location (the label may differ slightly).
  3. Return to the Earthquake Alerts screen and confirm its switch remains enabled.
  4. Keep location enabled while traveling; eligibility can change as the phone moves between regions.

Enabling location for this purpose does not mean an alert will identify the epicenter precisely or predict the exact shaking at your address. It allows the service to target a broad area using an approximate position.

Check whether the feature is available where you are

“Earthquake alerts are on” only means the local setting is enabled. Google explicitly states that Earthquake Alerts are not supported in all areas. Country and regional availability can change as the system expands, so use Google’s current supported-country list rather than an old screenshot or forum post.

Travel and border cases

A phone purchased in one country can be used in another with different support. The relevant question is where the phone is operating when the earthquake occurs, not just where it was bought. If you recently crossed a border, moved between territories, or are roaming, recheck the supported-country information and your data connection.

More than 200 regions does not mean universal coverage

Google’s 2026 announcement says the system covers more than 200 regions. That global figure does not establish coverage for every territory, island, rural area, carrier, or handset configuration. Treat the current country list as the authoritative availability check.

Do not confuse Earthquake Alerts with Wireless Emergency Alerts

Wireless Emergency Alerts are a separate delivery channel. They can include government or carrier-broadcast warnings and have their own controls, sounds, vibration behavior, and test settings.

Review WEA settings

Open Settings > Notifications > Wireless emergency alerts. Inspect each available category, confirm that sound and vibration are not disabled, and open notification history if you need to see whether a message arrived and was dismissed. Menu names differ by manufacturer and Android release, so use the Settings search field for “wireless emergency alerts” or “emergency alerts” when necessary.

Understand the priority order

Google places Wireless Emergency Alerts and Emergency Alert System messages above Android Earthquake Alerts. Ordinary app notifications appear below them. A phone may therefore show a government or carrier warning prominently while an Earthquake Alert appears later, or may suppress a lower-priority notification when multiple messages arrive together.

Connectivity is different

Android Earthquake Alerts requires Wi‑Fi or mobile data. WEA uses a carrier broadcast channel and is controlled separately. Having one channel enabled does not prove that the other is working, and disabling one does not necessarily disable the other.

Why an alert can be early, simultaneous, or late

Android’s warning is generated after sensors detect a possible earthquake and the system estimates location, magnitude, and shaking intensity. Those calculations and network delivery take time.

What you experienced What it can mean What to check
Alert before shaking The system detected the event early enough for the message to outrun the strongest waves reaching your location. No corrective action is required; keep connectivity, location, and the feature enabled.
Alert during shaking Detection, estimation, or network delivery completed only shortly before the motion reached you. Verify data or Wi‑Fi service and review whether the phone was in airplane mode or offline.
Alert after shaking The event was detected or delivered too slowly to provide advance notice. Check connectivity and geography, but recognize that timing can vary even on a correctly configured phone.
No alert The earthquake may not have been detected, may have fallen outside supported coverage, or the phone may have lacked location or internet access. Run the five-minute recovery sequence; do not assume hardware damage.

Google cautions that magnitude and shaking-intensity estimates may contain errors. A warning can therefore be issued for shaking that feels weaker or stronger than the message suggests, or not issued when the event falls below detection confidence.

Troubleshoot by symptom

“The Earthquake Alerts switch is off”

  1. Open Settings > Safety & emergency > Earthquake alerts, or the fallback Location > Advanced > Earthquake alerts.
  2. Turn it on and confirm that Location, Wi‑Fi, or mobile data are also on.
  3. Revisit the screen after a restart to ensure the setting stayed enabled.

Google says alerts are on by default where supported, but the switch can be changed manually. An earlier manual change, device reset, or software migration can leave it off.

“The menu is missing”

Use Settings search, try both documented paths, and verify the current country or region is supported. If the option remains absent, the feature may not be offered in that location or in that software build. A missing menu cannot be repaired by changing notification sounds for ordinary apps.

“Alerts are enabled, but I got nothing”

  • Confirm the phone had working Wi‑Fi or mobile data at the time.
  • Confirm Location was enabled.
  • Check supported geography.
  • Review notification history and WEA settings to see whether a different emergency channel delivered the message.
  • Consider whether the event was detectable and within the service’s estimated affected area.

Because Google says not all earthquakes can be detected, a clean settings screen is not evidence that every future event will trigger an alert.

“The alert arrived late”

First check data connectivity and whether the phone was offline, in airplane mode, or connected to a network that had no internet access. Then account for normal system timing: Google says an alert may arrive before, during, or after shaking begins. A late alert can therefore occur without a settings fault.

“I heard no sound or felt no vibration”

Open Settings > Notifications > Wireless emergency alerts and review sound and vibration controls, category settings, and notification history. Earthquake Alerts and WEA have separate controls, and labels vary by device. Also check whether the phone was muted, in a restrictive sound mode, or physically unable to produce vibration; these checks affect what you notice, not whether the service detected the earthquake.

“I received several warnings”

Multiple messages can reflect different channels or updated estimates. WEA/Emergency Alert System messages have higher priority than Earthquake Alerts. Read each message and follow official instructions rather than treating the number of notifications as a measure of earthquake severity.

Compare the warning channels

Channel Trigger source Connectivity requirement Controls Limits
Android Earthquake Alerts Android phone sensing and Google’s earthquake detection and estimation system Wi‑Fi and/or mobile data, plus enabled location Earthquake Alerts switch under Safety & emergency or Location > Advanced Not available everywhere; not all earthquakes are detected; magnitude and intensity estimates can be wrong; delivery may be before, during, or after shaking
Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) Carrier or government emergency broadcast, including Emergency Alert System messages where applicable Carrier broadcast channel rather than the internet-data path used by Earthquake Alerts Notifications > Wireless emergency alerts; categories, sound, vibration, history, and test controls vary Availability and message types depend on the country, carrier, and authorities; it is a separate system
Official local channels Government agencies and local emergency authorities Depends on the specific service, such as broadcast, siren, radio, or another network Follow the instructions issued by the responsible authority Coverage and timing differ by jurisdiction; Android describes its own alerts as supplemental

What to do after the settings are correct

Keep two independent channels available

Leave Android Earthquake Alerts enabled where supported, and keep relevant WEA categories enabled. Continue using official government or local warning channels. Android’s system supplements those channels; it does not replace emergency instructions.

Prepare for a notification that never arrives

Because detection and delivery can fail or be late, basic earthquake preparation still matters: know how to protect yourself during shaking, identify safer places indoors, and keep a way to receive official information when internet service is unavailable. A battery radio, charged power bank, and flashlight are examples of preparedness equipment, not fixes for Android’s notification system.

Document a repeatable failure

If the same phone repeatedly misses alerts during events that are confirmed in your supported area, note the phone model, Android release, carrier, location setting, connection type, and time of the event. Check notification history and WEA logs before contacting the carrier or device manufacturer. This information distinguishes a settings problem from a coverage, detection, or delivery limitation.

When the phone is probably not the problem

A missing alert is consistent with documented service limits when the phone was outside supported geography, had no Wi‑Fi or mobile data, had Location disabled, or the earthquake was not detected. Google’s own guidance says all three outcomes—before, during, or after shaking—are possible, and that not all earthquakes can be detected. Those qualifications are important: no notification alone does not establish a defective handset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After you verify the setting, connectivity, location, geography, and separate WEA controls, there may be no additional phone-side repair. Keep both warning channels enabled, monitor official local instructions, and treat every alert as information to act on rather than a promise of advance notice.
