Android Earthquake Alerts are useful early-warning messages, not a guarantee. On supported phones and in supported areas, Google can warn you about a nearby earthquake estimated at magnitude 4.5 or higher. The warning may arrive before shaking, while it is happening, or after it starts; some earthquakes will not be detected, and the estimated magnitude or intensity can be wrong.
The feature is free and built into Android where available. It normally needs device location, Google Play services, and Wi‑Fi or mobile data. It supplements official government warnings rather than replacing them.
What Android Earthquake Alerts are
Android Earthquake Alerts is a safety feature delivered through Android and Google Play services. When Google’s systems estimate that an earthquake near you may produce significant shaking, eligible phones can display an alert. Google’s documented trigger is an estimated magnitude of 4.5 or above, but the alert is based on an estimate, not a guaranteed measurement from a single instrument.

How the detection system works
Two regional sources
Google describes two ways alerts are produced:
- ShakeAlert: the official seismic early-warning system serving California, Oregon and Washington.
- Android Earthquake Alerts System: Google’s phone-based system operating in other regions where it is active.
These systems should not be treated as interchangeable labels. ShakeAlert relies on established seismic networks, while the Android system uses participating Android phones as a distributed sensor network. Which source serves you depends on your location.
Phone accelerometers and coarse location
Android phones contain accelerometers that can detect the characteristic motion of an earthquake. When enough participating devices detect similar movement, Google can estimate an event and its likely shaking area. Google Research says the resulting accuracy has been similar to established seismic networks and sometimes better. That is a Google-reported technical claim, not an independent score or a promise that every event will be located correctly.
Google says it uses a privacy-preserving, approximate location to decide which devices should receive an alert. The location is coarse rather than a precise household address, and Google states that these coarse locations are used to determine alert recipients, not to identify or locate a specific user.
Are Android earthquake alerts accurate?
They can provide valuable warning time, but accuracy is conditional. Google’s own guidance makes four limitations explicit:
- Earthquake alerts are not supported in all areas.
- Not all earthquakes can be detected.
- Magnitude and shaking-intensity estimates may contain errors.
- An alert may arrive before, during or after shaking begins.
No single percentage accuracy figure is published in the official help material. Avoid interpreting the feature as “X percent accurate.” Performance varies with the event, distance from the epicenter, the local detection network, participating phones and the ability to deliver a message over an internet connection. A phone that has no usable Wi‑Fi or mobile data cannot receive a current alert.

Why timing varies
An early-warning system must detect an event, estimate its size and location, determine who may experience shaking, and deliver a message. Those steps take time. If you are close to the source, strong shaking may begin before the estimate can be completed. If you are farther away, the same process may provide more warning. Network congestion, poor coverage, a phone that is offline, or an event that produces an unusual signal can also reduce or eliminate warning time.
What an alert can and cannot tell you
An alert is an estimate that shaking may affect your area. It is not a guarantee that your exact building will experience a particular intensity, and the absence of an alert does not prove that no earthquake is occurring. Treat the message as a prompt to take immediate protective action, not as a precise forecast.

Google documents the use of approximate or coarse location to target alerts. It says those coarse locations are used to determine which devices receive an earthquake alert and are not used to identify or locate a specific user.
Location Accuracy has a separate role. Google says that turning off Google Location Accuracy stops the phone from contributing data to earthquake detection. Turning off the device’s Location setting prevents the phone from receiving nearby-earthquake alerts. Those two controls therefore affect different things: one limits participation in detection, while the other blocks receipt of local alerts.
Google’s Location Accuracy documentation also explains that location data can be used without identifying specific individuals to maintain a crowdsourced wireless-signal database and improve location-based services, including earthquake detection. Google Play services documentation says safety and emergency services may use location and may collect device information such as battery level and Wi‑Fi information under Google’s Privacy Policy. Collection of that information is not the same as a precise, continuous record of your movements for earthquake alerts.

Privacy choices and their consequences

Menu names and the exact placement of these controls can differ by manufacturer and Android release. Changing them can improve privacy but may reduce either detection participation or your ability to receive warnings.

Do Android earthquake alerts drain battery?
Google’s public documentation does not provide a battery-drain percentage, controlled test, or comparison with the feature disabled. The accurate answer is therefore that official battery impact is not quantified.
Google Play services documentation mentions that battery level may be collected for safety and emergency services. That statement describes information handling; it is not a measurement of how much power earthquake alerts consume. Do not treat it as evidence of a specific drain rate.
Because the feature depends on phone sensors, location services, connectivity and Google Play services, actual power use can differ by handset, Android build, signal conditions, battery health and other apps. If battery life is critical, monitor your own phone’s battery-usage screen over comparable days rather than relying on an unsupported percentage. Disabling Location Accuracy prevents contribution to detection, while disabling device Location also prevents receiving nearby alerts.
Where are Android Earthquake Alerts available?
Android Help maintains the supported-country list, and Google’s October 2026 announcement says the service has expanded to more than 200 regions. That number and the individual locations are subject to change, so check the current Android Help list for your country before relying on the feature.

Availability is not determined by the phone brand alone. It can depend on:
- Whether your country or region is supported.
- Your Android version and device software build.
- The installed and functioning version of Google Play services.
- Device Location and related permissions.
- Wi‑Fi or mobile data being available when an alert is sent.
Google Play services documentation says some safety and emergency features work only on Android 9 and newer. Exact support can still vary by device, region, software release and network access.
How to turn earthquake alerts on or off
Primary Android settings path
- Open Settings.
- Tap Safety and emergency.
- Tap Earthquake alerts.
- Use the toggle to enable or disable the feature.
Alternative settings path
On some devices, the same control is under Settings → Location → Advanced → Earthquake alerts. Use the Settings search field for “Earthquake alerts” if neither path appears.
Checks after enabling
- Confirm that Location is on.
- Keep Wi‑Fi or mobile data enabled.
- Install pending Android and Google Play services updates.
- Verify that your country appears on the current supported-location list.
There is no reliable way to stage a real earthquake solely to test delivery. The absence of a test message does not prove that the feature is broken.
What to do when an alert appears
Read the estimated location, magnitude and shaking information quickly, then follow local earthquake-safety guidance. Move away from windows and unsecured objects and use the recognized “Drop, Cover and Hold On” action where appropriate. If shaking has already started, protect yourself immediately rather than waiting for additional details.

After the event, check official emergency-management or geological-service instructions for evacuation orders, tsunami warnings, damaged roads, gas leaks and aftershocks. An Android alert is not an all-clear message and does not replace those instructions.
Android alerts versus government warnings
Android alerts and official government systems answer related but different needs. Use the following distinctions when deciding how much weight to give a message:

Do not assume either source is universally more accurate. The right comparison depends on the particular earthquake, your distance from it and the local warning infrastructure. Subscribe to your government’s emergency channels where available, and treat Android alerts as an additional signal.

No Earthquake Alerts option appears
- Check the alternate menu path under Location → Advanced.
- Confirm that the country is currently supported.
- Update Android and Google Play services.
- Check whether the device is running Android 9 or newer, since some safety features require it.
The switch is on but no message arrived
- Verify that Location is enabled.
- Confirm that Wi‑Fi or mobile data was available during the event.
- Check whether the earthquake met the estimated magnitude and nearby-shaking conditions for an alert.
- Remember that Google says not all earthquakes are detected and that alerts can be late or absent.
You received an alert after shaking began
That behavior is within Google’s stated limitations. Detection and delivery take time, and people near the source may feel shaking before a message can be generated. Continue to use immediate protective action and official emergency instructions.
