Android Earthquake Alerts is a built-in safety feature that can warn you about nearby earthquake shaking. It uses Android phone accelerometers, official seismometer networks in some U.S. states, or both, and requires location services plus Wi‑Fi or mobile data. Alerts are not guaranteed to arrive before shaking: depending on the event and your distance, one can arrive before, during, or after it starts.
Coverage changed substantially in October 2026. Google announced an expansion from 98 countries and regions to more than 200, including Panama and Guatemala. The rollout began October 15 and was scheduled to complete over the following week, so the setting on your particular device is the practical test of availability.
What Android Earthquake Alerts does
A stationary Android phone contains an accelerometer—the sensor that detects movement when the screen rotates. During an earthquake, that sensor can recognize ground motion. The phone sends a coarse location and a detected-motion signal to Google, where reports from many devices are combined to estimate an earthquake’s location, magnitude and likely shaking area.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe system is designed around the difference between an earthquake’s waves. Faster P-waves usually arrive before the slower, more damaging S-waves. If the network identifies the event quickly enough, people farther from the epicenter may receive a warning before stronger shaking reaches them. People close to the source may receive the alert during shaking or after it has begun.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Android Earthquake Alerts supplements official warning and emergency systems; it is not a replacement for local emergency instructions, building procedures or general earthquake preparedness.
How phone-based detection works
- Several phones detect motion that resembles earthquake shaking.
- Each participating device contributes a coarse location rather than a precise address.
- Google combines reports to estimate the event and its expected intensity.
- Devices in the projected shaking area receive an alert appropriate to the estimated severity.
The first seconds contain limited information. Waiting for more reports can improve the estimate but leaves less time to warn people, so the service balances speed against accuracy.
Where Android Earthquake Alerts works
Android Help maintains the authoritative country list, and availability can differ by country, device software and network conditions. The October 2026 expansion increased the announced footprint from 98 countries and regions to more than 200. Panama and Guatemala were specifically named among the additions. Because the rollout was staged over approximately a week, two otherwise similar phones could have received the capability at slightly different times.

| Area or system | Detection source | What users should expect |
|---|---|---|
| Supported countries and regions outside the U.S. seismometer states | Android phones participating in the crowdsourced detection network | Coverage depends on the current supported-country list, compatible Android software, enabled location and an internet connection. |
| California, Oregon and Washington | ShakeAlert warnings generated from traditional seismometer networks | Android delivers warnings produced by the official regional system. |
| Other U.S. states and territories | Google’s phone-based detection layer, as covered by the U.S. expansion announcement | Google announced rollout to all 50 states and six territories; actual receipt still depends on supported software, settings and connectivity. |
In the United States, an earthquake can cross state borders. Android Help says your alert is determined by the warning system authorized for your state, regardless of where the epicenter lies. A warning may therefore come from a different detection layer than the one used on the other side of the border.
Requirements and exact setup steps
What must be enabled
- A compatible Android phone with the Earthquake Alerts feature available in your region.
- Location services, including the Earthquake Alerts setting.
- Wi‑Fi or mobile data so the phone can receive the warning.
- Google Play services and safety settings functioning normally.
Android Help says Earthquake Alerts are on by default where the feature is supported. “On by default” does not override an unsupported country, disabled location, missing connectivity or incompatible software.
Primary settings path
- Open Settings.
- Tap Safety & emergency.
- Choose Earthquake alerts.
- Turn the setting on or off.
Some phones use an alternate layout: open Settings, tap Location, choose Advanced, then Earthquake alerts. Use the Settings search field for “earthquake” if neither path appears. The absence of the setting generally indicates that the feature is not available for that device, software build or region at that moment.

Connectivity checks
- Keep either Wi‑Fi or cellular data available; alerts cannot be delivered through an entirely offline connection.
- Verify that Airplane mode is off when you expect to receive warnings.
- If you use a restricted data mode, battery saver or a managed-device policy, check whether it limits Google Play services or emergency notifications.
- Install available Android system and Google Play services updates, then revisit the Earthquake Alerts setting.
Privacy: what location and device data are used
Google says coarse locations from Android devices are used to determine which devices should receive an earthquake alert. Its stated policy is that this information “does not and is not used to identify or locate a specific user.” The detection process likewise sends a coarse location with the detected signal so reports can be combined without providing a precise location for targeting.
| Data or signal | Purpose described by Google | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Coarse device location | Estimate the earthquake and select devices in the projected shaking area | Google says it is not used to identify or locate a specific user. |
| Accelerometer motion signal | Detect possible ground shaking and contribute to the event estimate | Individual reports are combined with other devices; not every detected motion is an earthquake. |
| Device information such as battery level and Wi‑Fi information | Safety and emergency functions in Google Play services | Google says collection and storage are handled under its Privacy Policy. |
| Location setting status | Determine whether the phone can participate in detection and receive alerts | Turning off location can prevent the feature from working. |
These statements describe the service’s intended data handling, not a promise that no other Android service ever processes location. Other apps and system features have their own permissions and policies, which you can review separately in Android’s Privacy dashboard and app-permission controls.
How much warning you can get
Google says Android phones send alerts for nearby earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 and above, but not every earthquake can be detected. Magnitude and shaking estimates can be wrong, and the alert may arrive before, during or after shaking starts.

Warning time is primarily a distance problem. A phone farther from the epicenter has more time between the first detected waves and the arrival of strong shaking. A phone very close to the source may have little or no usable lead time even when the system performs correctly.
| Documented event | First alert after the earthquake began | Reported warning experience |
|---|---|---|
| November 2023, Philippines | 18.3 seconds | Up to 15 seconds for the closest users in the documented example. |
| November 2023, Nepal | 15.6 seconds | 10–60 seconds for users experiencing moderate-to-strong shaking, depending on location. |
| April 2025, Turkey | 8.0 seconds | A few seconds to 20 seconds, depending on distance and shaking intensity. |
Those figures are examples from specific events, not guaranteed response times. Google Research also reported that the median absolute error of the first magnitude estimate was reduced from 0.50 to 0.25 in its technical update. An improved estimate still cannot eliminate uncertainty during the first seconds of a new earthquake.

| Alert | When it is intended to appear | Interface and response |
|---|---|---|
| Be Aware | Estimated light shaking | A less disruptive notification intended to make you aware of possible shaking. |
| Be Ready | Stronger expected shaking that calls for preparation | The updated experience is rolling out with a shaking-radius map, estimated magnitude, a recommended action and a link for more information. |
| Take Action | Estimated moderate to heavy shaking | A full-screen alert designed to take over the display and play a loud sound so it is harder to miss. |
Earlier technical documentation used the names BeAware and TakeAction. If your phone shows different capitalization or a different layout, that is usually a software-version or regional interface difference rather than a separate detection system.
Android alerts, ShakeAlert and government warnings
“Android earthquake alert” does not describe one identical data source everywhere. The main differences are the sensor network, who authorizes the warning and how the message is delivered.
| Comparison point | Android phone-based detection | ShakeAlert in California, Oregon and Washington | Other government emergency channels |
|---|---|---|---|
| Detection source | Accelerometers in participating Android phones | Traditional seismometers | Varies by agency and hazard. |
| Geographic authorization | Supported countries and regions; availability is device- and setting-dependent | Regional U.S. system for California, Oregon and Washington | Jurisdiction-specific. |
| Connectivity | Wi‑Fi or mobile data is required to receive the alert | Android delivery still requires the phone to be connected | Channel-dependent. |
| Lead time | Can range from none to seconds or longer, depending on distance and detection speed | Also depends on distance, network detection and alert processing | Varies by system and event. |
| Role | Supplemental warning layer | Official regional warning source delivered through Android | Follow local emergency authorities and instructions. |
Wireless Emergency Alerts and the Emergency Alert System have higher display priority than Android Earthquake Alerts on Android devices. Receiving an Android warning should not be treated as evidence that other official channels are unavailable or unnecessary.
Why you might receive an alert without feeling an earthquake
- Estimated shaking differed from your actual conditions. Early magnitude, location and intensity calculations are based on limited data and can contain errors.
- You were near the edge of the predicted shaking area. The alert is targeted using a projected radius, not a guarantee that every person inside it will feel the same motion.
- The event was detected while you were moving or distracted. A brief or weak arrival can be easy to miss, especially indoors or in a vehicle.
- The warning arrived after the strongest motion. Alerts can be early, simultaneous with shaking or late.
- The source system differed by location. A ShakeAlert message, a phone-detection message and another emergency notice may have different thresholds and timing.
An alert that turns out to be unnecessary is not proof that the feature tracked your precise position or that a deliberate false alarm was issued. It reflects the unavoidable uncertainty of making a rapid estimate before all seismic data are available.
What to do when an alert arrives
- Read the severity and recommended action on the screen immediately.
- If shaking starts, protect yourself rather than trying to verify the notification. Drop, cover and hold on; stay away from windows and unsecured objects.
- Do not use elevators during shaking. If you are outside, move away from buildings, glass and overhead hazards.
- After the motion stops, check for injuries, fire, gas leaks and structural damage, and follow local emergency instructions.
- Expect aftershocks and keep more than one warning channel enabled, including local government notifications where available.
Troubleshooting missing or unexpected alerts
No Earthquake Alerts setting
Confirm your country and Android software are supported, then check both Settings paths described above. Install system and Google Play services updates. If the option still does not appear, the feature may not yet be available for that device or region.
The setting is on but no alert arrived
- Check that Location is on and that Wi‑Fi or mobile data was connected at the time.
- Review battery, data-saving and enterprise-management restrictions that could delay Google Play services.
- Remember that not every earthquake is detected, and a nearby event may not meet the service’s estimated magnitude or shaking criteria.
- Phones outside the projected shaking area may receive no message even when an earthquake occurred nearby.
An alert arrived late or seemed inaccurate
Late delivery and inaccurate estimates are documented limitations. The system must issue a warning before it has complete information; a later alert does not necessarily indicate a device failure.
Quick Recap
Key takeaways
- Android Earthquake Alerts is a supplemental warning service, not a guarantee of advance notice.
- Coverage expanded to more than 200 countries and regions in October 2026, but the live supported-country list and your phone’s settings determine availability.
- Location services and Wi‑Fi or cellular data are required for receiving alerts.
- Google says coarse location is used for targeting and is not used to identify or locate a specific user.
- U.S. users in California, Oregon and Washington receive ShakeAlert-based warnings; other supported areas primarily use Android phone detection.
- Warning time can be zero, several seconds or longer. Treat every alert as a prompt to take protective action, not as a prediction of exactly when shaking will begin.
