Android may be getting a voice-triggered way to start Emergency SOS, but it is not available as a confirmed feature. Android Authority reported on October 1, 2026, that strings in a build of Google’s Personal Safety app point to a possible hands-free option. The report does not establish an activation phrase, launch date, supported devices, or regional availability.
What the reported hands-free SOS feature might do
Android Authority found strings in Personal Safety app build 2026.09.16.982745548 that include “Add hands-free way to start,” “Say ‘yes’ to continue,” and “Say ‘cancel’ to dismiss Emergency SOS.” Those strings suggest a voice-based start and a spoken confirmation or cancellation step, but they do not confirm how the feature will work in practice. The report says it was not available to users when the article was published. Android Authority’s report
The report interprets an animation as suggesting that a user might say “Help” three times. That is the outlet’s reading of the animation, not a Google-confirmed activation phrase. Do not rely on it to contact emergency services.
How to start Emergency SOS on Android now
Google’s documented Emergency SOS workflow uses the phone’s power button, not a voice trigger. Google says the feature is available on Android 12 and later; the exact instructions and options can vary by device. Google’s Emergency SOS help

What Emergency SOS depends on
- Google says Emergency SOS does not work in airplane mode or when Battery Saver is on. Google’s Emergency SOS help
- Real-time location sharing with emergency contacts requires Wi-Fi or mobile internet. Google’s Emergency SOS help
- Emergency Location Service (ELS) is distinct from sharing location with contacts. Android says, “ELS only sends an emergency location if a user calls or texts an emergency number from their device.” Location is determined on the device and sent directly to emergency services. Voice commands for contacts are not the same as an SOS call
Google documents Assistant commands for Emergency Sharing and Safety Check on Pixel phones. These functions relate to sharing with selected contacts or checking in; they do not establish that Google Assistant can currently start an Emergency SOS call to emergency services by voice. That distinction matters: a possible hands-free Emergency SOS trigger would concern starting the SOS flow, while Emergency Sharing and Safety Check are separate safety tools. The cited report does not confirm that the proposed voice trigger is available or explain whether it will initiate a call, contact-sharing action, or both.
