On a current Android phone, you can often uninstall utility apps used for four routine jobs: basic photo editing, QR-code reading, document scanning, nearby file transfer, and storage cleanup. Gallery or Google Photos, the stock camera, Google Drive, Files by Google and Quick Share now cover these everyday workflows without another app running in the background.

The “four apps” shorthand refers to four kinds of utility work, not exactly four named app packages. The original group included photo editors such as Snapseed, PicsArt and Lightroom, document and QR scanners, file-sharing tools such as EasyShare, Xender and Zapya, and RAM-cleaner utilities. Availability still depends on your Android version, phone maker, model and region, so test each built-in function before deleting anything.

What Android now handles without extra utility apps

Built-in tools are strongest when the job is occasional and straightforward: crop a family photo, scan a receipt, send several files to a nearby phone or remove junk downloads. They are not universal replacements for professional editing, high-volume scanning or specialized business workflows.

  • Photo editing: Gallery and Google Photos can handle crop, rotate, filters, brightness and contrast. Some phones also offer background removal and AI editing.
  • QR codes: Many camera apps recognize a code and display a tappable link, although Google notes that support varies by device.
  • Documents: Google Drive and Files by Google can create multi-page PDFs; supported Pixel phones can prompt for a document scan directly in Camera.
  • Nearby transfers: Quick Share sends files from Android’s share menu or Files by Google, including to devices running Android 6 or later.
  • Cleanup: Files by Google reviews junk, duplicates, screenshots, unused apps and other large categories without a separate RAM booster.

Check the feature on your own phone first. A missing button can indicate unsupported hardware or software rather than an incorrect setting.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

1. Routine photo editing: use Gallery or Google Photos first

What the built-in editor covers

For social posts, travel snapshots and family pictures, open the image in your phone’s Gallery app or Google Photos and choose Edit. The exact labels differ by manufacturer, but the common controls are crop, rotate, filters, brightness and contrast. On supported phones, the editor may also remove a background or offer AI-assisted edits.

  1. Open Gallery or Google Photos and select a picture.
  2. Tap Edit.
  3. Use crop or rotate to correct framing, then adjust brightness and contrast.
  4. Apply a filter only after the exposure looks right; reduce its intensity if the result looks artificial.
  5. Use background removal or an AI tool only if your model displays that option.
  6. Choose Save copy when available so the original remains untouched.

This workflow replaces installing a separate editor for one-off corrections. It also keeps the edited image in the same photo library, which is convenient when the image is already backed up or organized there.

When Snapseed, PicsArt or Lightroom still has a role

A dedicated editor remains justified when you need layers, masks, precise selections, RAW development, repeatable color settings, batch processing, typography or complex retouching. Built-in AI tools are model-dependent and are not a guarantee of professional-quality edge masking or color accuracy. If you routinely deliver client work or need non-destructive control over every adjustment, keep the specialist editor and remove only the simpler apps you no longer open.

2. QR scanning: test the stock camera before installing a scanner

How to scan with the camera

Open the default Camera app and point it at the QR code without taking a photo. On phones with QR recognition, a banner or link appears; tap it to continue. Do not assume every Android camera behaves the same way. Google cautions that default-camera QR support varies by device model.

  1. Open Camera in its normal photo mode.
  2. Center the entire code in the viewfinder and hold the phone steady.
  3. Wait for the recognition banner or link.
  4. Check the displayed web address before opening it, especially for payment, login or account-recovery codes.

If the camera does not react, swipe down twice to open Quick Settings and look for a QR scanner tile. Some phones provide that shortcut even when the camera app does not automatically detect codes. If neither option exists, your model or software build may not include a built-in scanner; only then consider a dedicated app.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Security and reliability limits

A scanner only decodes the pattern; it does not make the destination trustworthy. Treat an unexpected domain, shortened link or request for credentials as a warning. Poor lighting, glare, a damaged code or a very small code can also prevent recognition, so move closer, clean the lens and increase the screen brightness of the device displaying the code.

3. Document scanning: Drive, Files by Google and Pixel Camera

Google Drive for multi-page scans

Google Drive for Android can scan receipts, letters and billing statements. Its scanner lets you crop and rotate each page, switch between color and grayscale, clean stains or fingers, add pages and delete pages. You can save the finished document as a PDF or JPG.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Google Drive and tap the camera or scan command, depending on the app version.
  2. Position the page inside the frame and capture it.
  3. Use crop and rotate to straighten the page.
  4. Choose color or grayscale and use the cleanup control to remove visible marks.
  5. Tap the option to add another page, or delete a page that was captured incorrectly.
  6. Save as PDF or JPG and choose the Drive folder.

Drive is useful when the scan needs to go straight into cloud storage or be shared with someone who already has access to that folder.

Files by Google for searchable PDFs and local cleanup

Files by Google can scan documents into searchable PDFs, clean unwanted objects, combine pages and place the result in a Scanned folder. That combination makes it practical for a receipt or form that you want to find later on the phone rather than immediately organize in Drive.

  • Travel Must-Have for People On the Go: A must-have travel accessory for flights, flying, airports, air travel, airplanes, planes, international trips, cruises, and long travel days. Key gadget for your airport haul, travel accessories and must-haves.
  1. Open Files by Google and choose its document-scan option.
  2. Capture each page, keeping the phone parallel to the document.
  3. Review the automatic crop and remove unwanted marks when the cleanup control is offered.
  4. Add or reorder pages, then combine them into one file.
  5. Save the result as a searchable PDF in the Scanned folder.

Searchability depends on how clearly the text is captured and on the language support available in your software. Handwriting, ornate fonts and low-contrast pages may still require manual transcription.

Pixel Camera’s document prompt

Supported Pixel phones can show a document-scan prompt in Camera. When it appears, follow the on-screen capture and save steps. The prompt is not available on every Pixel generation or in every region, so the absence of the prompt does not indicate a camera fault.

When a dedicated scanner remains worthwhile

Keep a specialist app for high-volume batch capture, advanced optical character recognition, form extraction, automated cloud integrations, audit trails or compliance controls. Those requirements go beyond occasional receipts and letters, and built-in scanners do not promise those business features.

4. Nearby file sharing: replace Xender-style workflows with Quick Share

Send files from the share menu

Google describes Quick Share this way: “With Quick Share, you can immediately send and receive files from nearby devices.” It is integrated into Android’s share sheet and Files by Google, so you do not need a separate transfer app for photos, videos, documents or multiple files.

  1. Open Gallery, Files by Google or another app containing the files.
  2. Select one or more items and tap Share.
  3. Choose Quick Share.
  4. Have the recipient unlock the nearby device and enable visibility when prompted.
  5. Select the recipient’s device and wait for the transfer status notification.
  6. The recipient accepts the transfer; the files are then placed in the receiving app’s normal location.

Files by Google also supports selecting several items before sharing. If direct device discovery fails, Quick Share can provide a QR-code fallback for the recipient to scan.

Compatibility and Galaxy differences

Google documents Quick Share availability on Android 6 and newer, but menus and visibility controls vary by manufacturer. Galaxy phones can present different names or settings, and some simultaneous-sharing capabilities are limited to particular models. Keep Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled, bring the devices close together and check the sender’s visibility setting if the target does not appear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why EasyShare, Xender and Zapya may still be unnecessary

Those apps can be useful on older phones or in environments where built-in sharing is unavailable. On a compatible modern Android device, Quick Share covers the ordinary nearby-transfer job with fewer permissions and no additional transfer interface to maintain. A dedicated tool is still reasonable when your organization requires a proprietary cross-platform workflow or a feature your phone’s implementation does not expose.

5. RAM and storage cleanup: let Android manage memory

Why a RAM booster is usually the wrong fix

Android manages memory and background processes itself. Closing processes with a “RAM cleaner” does not come with a demonstrated speed or battery guarantee in the available evidence, and repeatedly forcing apps to restart can make normal use less efficient. If a particular app is misbehaving, use Android’s app-info screen to stop or uninstall that app instead of repeatedly clearing all memory.

Apply even pressure for a few seconds to allow the suction cup to adhere properly. To maintain the grip and prevent accidental falls, it's a good practice to periodically reapply pressure to the suction cup.

Use Files by Google to reclaim storage

Files by Google provides a review-based cleanup path rather than deleting everything blindly. It can surface junk files, duplicate files, recommended files, screenshots and unused apps.

  1. Open Files by Google and select the Clean section.
  2. Open each recommendation category and inspect the items.
  3. Delete temporary junk only after checking that no app needs the files.
  4. Compare duplicate suggestions before removing one copy; keep the higher-quality or correctly dated file.
  5. Review screenshots and old downloads separately, since they may contain information you still need.
  6. Uninstall unused apps from the recommendation list only after confirming that their data is backed up or disposable.

This is storage management, not a promise of a benchmarked performance improvement. Freeing space can prevent “storage full” errors, but the amount recovered depends entirely on what is stored on your phone.

Built-in tools versus dedicated utilities

Task Built-in option Compatibility Convenience Output and advanced features Privacy and storage handling
Routine photo edits Gallery or Google Photos Available on most modern Android phones; AI and background removal vary Immediate editing in the existing library Strong for crop, filters, brightness and contrast; limited compared with layers, RAW and advanced color tools Uses the phone’s existing photo library and backup settings
QR scanning Stock Camera or Quick Settings QR scanner Camera support varies by model No separate app when recognition is present Decodes ordinary QR links; not a specialized enterprise scanner No extra scanner app or its additional permissions
Document scanning Google Drive, Files by Google or supported Pixel Camera Features vary by app, phone and region Crop, rotate, clean, add pages and save from one workflow PDF/JPG output; Files by Google can create searchable PDFs; specialist OCR and batch automation may be missing Drive stores in the selected cloud folder; Files stores scans in its Scanned folder
Nearby sharing Quick Share Android 6+ documented; manufacturer settings and model features differ Integrated with Share and Files by Google; multi-file and QR fallback supported Good for nearby transfers, not a replacement for every managed cross-platform system No separate transfer app; received files use normal device storage
Storage review Files by Google Clean section Requires the Files by Google app Recommendations group likely deletions for inspection Finds junk, duplicates, screenshots and unused apps; does not provide a measured RAM or battery boost You approve each deletion, reducing accidental removal

Before uninstalling the old utilities

  • Open the stock Camera and test QR recognition with a harmless code.
  • Edit a copy of a photo in Gallery or Google Photos and confirm the controls you actually use.
  • Scan a sample page in Drive or Files by Google, including a multi-page PDF if that is part of your routine.
  • Send a small group of files with Quick Share and verify where the recipient receives them.
  • Review Files by Google’s cleanup suggestions manually rather than accepting every category at once.
  • Export any projects, presets or local files stored only inside a dedicated app before uninstalling it.
  • Check your Android version, manufacturer documentation and regional settings if a feature described here is absent.

After those checks, remove only the utilities whose specific features you no longer need. Built-in Android tools simplify ordinary tasks; they do not erase the need for specialist software when your work depends on professional editing, advanced OCR, compliance records or unusual sharing requirements.
