To silence Android Auto message alerts, change the notification setting for the messaging app on your phone. Open Settings > Notifications (or Settings > Apps > [messaging app] > Notifications) and disable the message alert type, sound or vibration that is reaching the car. For broader quiet while driving, use Modes or Do Not Disturb and block the app, messages or selected conversations. To stop spoken AI summaries, turn off Message Summary in Android Auto settings. Labels differ by phone, Android version, messaging app and vehicle.
Choose the control that matches the interruption
Android Auto can show message notifications on the vehicle display, play an alert sound, vibrate the connected phone and read messages aloud. These behaviors are controlled in different places. A setting that hides a banner may not stop a spoken message, and a setting that silences one app may not affect other apps.

Android Auto is designed to reduce distraction. Google’s accessibility guidance describes it as bringing apps to the car display so you can focus while driving. The system therefore limits some actions while the vehicle is moving.
Silence messages from one app
This is the best option when you want to keep calls, navigation and alerts from other apps but stop one messaging service from interrupting you.
Disable the app’s message alerts
- On the connected Android phone, open Settings.
- Tap Notifications. On some phones, use Apps, select the messaging app, then tap Notifications.
- Select the notification category for incoming messages, chats or conversations. The wording is set by the app and phone maker.
- Turn off that category, or change it from Alerting to Silent if you want the notification to remain available without sound or vibration.
- If the app offers separate controls for group chats, direct messages, calls or other events, change only the category that is bothering you.
Android supports notification controls by app, including alert type, sound and vibration. Google notes that settings can vary by phone, so a Pixel, Samsung, Motorola or other device may place the same controls under different menus.

When you need the notification to remain visible
Choose a silent category rather than disabling notifications completely when you still want the message on the phone’s notification shade or in the app. Android Auto may still show a missed or dismissed item in its notification centre even after the original pop-up or sound has been suppressed.
Mute a single conversation, when the app supports it
Some messaging apps expose conversation-level controls inside the app or in the notification itself. Muting one conversation is narrower than disabling the entire app. If no conversation control appears, use the app’s notification categories or an Android mode filter instead.

Use Driving mode or Do Not Disturb for broader quiet
Use a system mode when you want a repeatable driving profile rather than a permanent change to one app. Android may call the feature Modes, Do Not Disturb or, on some devices, a driving-specific mode.
Configure the interruption filters
- Open Settings on the phone.
- Tap Modes or Do Not Disturb. If you see a driving mode, select it; otherwise create or edit the mode you use while driving.
- Open Notification filters, Apps or the equivalent filter page.
- Block the messaging app, all messages, or selected conversations. Android can also let you allow specific people or apps.
- Review the mode’s schedule or activation method, then save it and test it while parked.
Filter names and available categories are device-specific. A mode can block an app entirely, allow only selected contacts, or suppress categories such as messages while leaving alarms or navigation-related alerts available.

Temporary versus permanent controls
A mode is usually the better choice when silence should apply only during driving, work or another recurring situation. An app notification setting is persistent until you change it again. If you use both, the more restrictive combination determines what reaches the phone and, consequently, Android Auto.
Stop Android Auto from reading messages aloud
There are two different spoken behaviors: a message may be read when you ask the assistant to read it, or Android Auto may offer an AI-generated summary. To disable the latter, change the separate Message Summary setting.

- Open the Android Auto app on your phone. On newer Android versions, Android Auto settings may also be reachable through the phone’s connected-device or Google settings area.
- Open Settings.
- Under Notifications, find Message Summary.
- Turn the setting off.
Google states that Message Summary availability differs by device, region, country and language. Summaries are generated automatically and can contain mistakes. Turning this feature off does not necessarily disable every message notification or prevent you from requesting a message through voice controls.
Prevent any message interruption
If you do not want Android Auto to offer messages at all, combine the Message Summary change with the phone-level app setting or a driving-mode filter described above. Disabling only the summary feature addresses AI summaries, not every visual or audio alert.

Find messages without pop-up notifications
Android Auto can keep dismissed or missed items in its notification centre. Google’s help documentation says message notifications appear on the car screen and that dismissed and missed messages can be found and listened to from that screen.
- Look for the numbered notification indicator on the Android Auto display. The number can represent missed calls, messages or other alerts.
- Tap the indicator to open the notification centre.
- Select the message or alert you want to review.
- Use the available playback or voice option to have it read aloud, or leave it for later.
Silencing a banner, sound or vibration does not automatically erase the underlying message. The notification centre’s contents depend on what the phone and app deliver to Android Auto, and the display can differ by vehicle.

Missing alerts usually result from a phone notification being disabled, a connection problem, missing notification access or an intentional filter. Check the following in order, with the vehicle parked.
1. Confirm phone notifications
Open the messaging app’s notification page and make sure the relevant category is enabled. Check that it is not set to silent if you expect a sound, and verify that the app is allowed to send notifications at all.
2. Check the phone-to-car connection
Confirm that the phone is connected to the car through the method supported by the vehicle, such as a compatible USB connection or wireless Android Auto. If navigation and other Android Auto apps also fail, reconnect the phone and check the cable, Bluetooth pairing and head-unit source selection.

3. Review Android mode filters
Open Settings > Modes or Do Not Disturb and inspect blocked apps, people, messages and conversations. A driving schedule may be active even when you did not manually enable it.
4. Check notification access
Android Auto needs permission to receive notification information from the phone. For cars with Google built-in, Google specifies Bluetooth plus notification access for Gemini or Google Assistant. Menu names vary, but look in the phone’s special app access, notification access or connected-device settings and ensure the relevant Google service is enabled.
5. Check the app and conversation itself
The sender may have deleted or edited the message, the conversation may be muted, or the app may be paused by a battery or background-data restriction. Re-enable notifications for the conversation and test with a new message while parked.
6. Verify compatibility
Android Auto requires a compatible car or stereo. Google recommends contacting the vehicle manufacturer for compatibility information. A head unit can support Android Auto while exposing fewer notification controls than another model.

What Android Auto blocks while the car is moving
Android Auto intentionally limits distraction-heavy interactions. Voice commands can read and send messages, but actions such as typing are locked out while moving. If a control is unavailable on the display, complete that task when parked rather than attempting to bypass the restriction.
- Use a voice command to ask for a message to be read or to dictate a reply.
- Keep the phone mounted and out of reach while driving.
- Pull over before typing, changing complex notification rules or troubleshooting the connection.
- Do not treat a silent notification setting as permission to handle the phone manually in traffic.
These restrictions are part of Android Auto’s safety design, not evidence that the app is malfunctioning.
Control visual, audible and spoken alerts separately
Think of an alert as several outputs rather than one switch. A notification category can control whether an app posts an alert, and its sound and vibration. Android Auto then decides how that notification is presented on the vehicle display and whether voice interaction is available.

Because these controls have different scopes, test the exact behavior you want. For example, setting a message category to silent may remove a sound while leaving a card visible; blocking the category in a driving mode may remove both from the active display while the phone still receives the message.
Restore alerts after silencing them
- On the phone, open Settings > Notifications, or open Apps > [messaging app] > Notifications.
- Turn the required message category back on and choose the desired alert type, sound and vibration.
- Open Modes or Do Not Disturb and remove the app, message category or conversation from the blocked list.
- If summaries are wanted, return to Android Auto’s notification settings and enable Message Summary, where the feature is offered.
- Reconnect Android Auto and send a test message while parked.
If the test still fails, check notification access and vehicle compatibility before changing unrelated phone settings.

- Turning down media volume: This may reduce navigation or music volume without changing the messaging app’s notification category. Use the app or mode notification controls instead.
- Disabling Android Auto notifications globally: This can hide useful alerts from every messaging app. Start with the specific app or category.
- Turning off Message Summary and expecting all speech to stop: The setting targets AI-generated summaries. A voice request can still read a message unless the underlying notification or mode filter blocks it.
- Assuming a dismissed message is deleted: Android Auto can retain dismissed and missed items in its notification centre.
- Changing settings while moving: Android Auto locks out some actions, including typing. Park before making changes.
- Copying instructions from another phone: Android labels and menu paths differ by manufacturer, Android version and app. Look for equivalent terms such as Notifications, Notification categories, Modes, Do Not Disturb and Notification access.
- Ignoring the car’s head unit: Vehicle software and stereo compatibility influence which Android Auto controls appear. Consult the vehicle maker for compatibility details.
Privacy and safety considerations
Message previews on a shared or visible car display can expose sensitive content to passengers. Blocking a messaging app or conversation during a drive reduces that exposure, while the notification centre may still contain missed items for later playback. Choose filters based on who can see or hear the vehicle display, not only on convenience.
Voice interaction is safer than handling the phone, but it is not infallible. Confirm recipients and message content when the system asks for clarification, and postpone anything complex until parked.
