If Android Auto connects but no music plays without mobile data, the car connection is usually not the real problem. Android Auto is the display and control layer; the music app on your phone must support Android Auto, be signed in, and contain valid local downloads or cached tracks. Test playback in the app on the phone first, then check the app’s offline requirements, USB connection, updates and account status.
The fastest route is to reconnect while online, confirm the exact album or playlist plays on the phone, and only then disconnect data and test Android Auto. Streaming apps cannot fetch a new song when the phone is offline.
Why Android Auto has no music when your phone is offline
Android Auto does not store your music library. It presents compatible phone apps on the vehicle display and sends your selections to those apps. Google states that media apps must be compatible with Android Auto and that you must be signed in to each app on the phone before starting Android Auto.

When cellular and Wi-Fi data are unavailable, a streaming request cannot retrieve a track. Playback can continue only when the service has a valid download or cache on the phone. A playlist that is merely saved to your library is not necessarily stored for offline use.

- Compatible app: The installed music app must support Android Auto.
- Authenticated account: Sign in on the phone before connecting to the car.
- Local audio: The album, playlist, song or podcast must be downloaded or retained in the app’s cache.
- Valid entitlement: Some services require a paid plan for offline playback.
- Working transport: Wired Android Auto needs a USB data connection; wireless Android Auto needs a working wireless link.
Use the following order so you do not waste time changing the cable when the app simply has no offline files.
Run this two-minute diagnosis first
- While still online, open the music app directly on your phone.
- Confirm the correct account is signed in and the intended album or playlist is visibly marked as downloaded.
- Start one downloaded track on the phone and let it play for several seconds.
- Turn off mobile data and Wi-Fi, then play the same track on the phone.
- If it fails on the phone, fix the app’s offline setup before troubleshooting Android Auto.
- If it works on the phone but not in the car, reconnect Android Auto and continue with the connection and app-specific checks below.
This test separates missing downloads from a display, USB or vehicle problem. Android Auto cannot provide files that the music app itself has not stored.
Fix Spotify Offline Backup in Android Auto
Enable offline listening and build a usable cache
Spotify’s Offline Backup can appear on the Android Auto home screen when the device is offline. It relies on offline listening being enabled and on tracks being present in the device cache. Play the music you expect to use before leaving coverage so Spotify has time to cache it, and verify that the tracks play with the phone in airplane mode or with both data connections disabled.
- Open Spotify on the phone while online and sign in.
- Enable the app’s offline listening option if it is not already enabled.
- Open the playlist, album or podcast you need and allow it to finish downloading or caching.
- Check available phone storage. Low storage can prevent caching.
- Disconnect mobile data and Wi-Fi, connect Android Auto, and look for Offline Backup on the Spotify Home screen.
Why Offline Backup may be missing
Spotify identifies several conditions that can hide Offline Backup: insufficient storage, clearing the app cache, reinstalling the app, and too little recent playback. Do not clear Spotify’s cache or reinstall immediately before an offline trip; either action can remove the local material or make Offline Backup disappear until the app rebuilds its cache.
If you have already cleared the cache or reinstalled, reconnect to the internet, sign in, enable offline listening again and play the required material long enough for the cache to repopulate. Then repeat the offline phone test before opening Android Auto.
Fix YouTube Music downloads
Download content deliberately
YouTube Music Premium supports offline downloads for music. While online, download the specific playlist, album, song or podcast you want rather than assuming a liked item is available locally. Keep enough free storage for the downloads and confirm that at least one downloaded item plays with data disabled.

- Open YouTube Music on the phone and sign in to the account that has the required Premium access.
- Open the target playlist, album, song or podcast and choose its download command.
- Wait for the download indicator to complete over a reliable connection.
- Turn off mobile data and Wi-Fi and test the item in YouTube Music on the phone.
- Reconnect Android Auto, open the car’s Music tab and select YouTube Music.
Refresh downloads every 30 days
Google’s YouTube Music help guidance says the device must reconnect to the internet at least once every 30 days to maintain downloads. If downloaded music stopped working after a long trip or extended period offline, reconnect the phone, open YouTube Music, allow it to validate the account and downloads, and test again before driving offline.
Signing in only on the vehicle screen is not enough. Google specifically requires you to be signed in to YouTube Music on the phone before starting Android Auto.
Check other compatible music apps, including TIDAL
Every service has its own offline rules, so use the app’s offline or downloads view rather than relying on Android Auto’s generic music list. TIDAL’s Android Auto guidance recommends downloaded playlists or offline mode when playback fails. It also suggests trying another track, reconnecting the phone and testing a different USB cable.
- Open the service on the phone while online and verify the account and subscription.
- Open its offline or downloaded section and start a stored track.
- Try a second downloaded track in case one file is unavailable or damaged.
- Reconnect the phone to Android Auto and select the app from the Music tab.
A service may support Android Auto for online playback but still require a paid tier, a recent account check or a local download for offline listening. The app’s own offline test is the decisive check.
Repair the Android Auto connection
Replace the USB cable when wired Android Auto used to work
Google says replacing the USB cable will likely fix a previously working Android Auto connection. Use a known-good USB data cable, not a charge-only lead, and plug it into the vehicle’s supported Android Auto data port. A cable can still charge the phone while failing to carry the data needed for Android Auto.

- Try a short, undamaged USB data cable known to transfer files.
- Use the car’s Android Auto-supported USB port; some vehicles have separate charging-only ports.
- If possible, test a second compatible cable and the other supported port.
- Unlock the phone and accept any Android Auto permission prompt.
If Android Auto does not start at all with a known-good data cable, confirm that the vehicle or aftermarket head unit is Android Auto compatible. Compatibility is separate from whether the music app has offline files.

Wireless connection checks
For wireless Android Auto, temporarily test with a wired data cable if the vehicle supports it. A wired test can show whether the app is working and isolate a wireless pairing or transport issue. Keep Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled as required by the vehicle, and remove stale pairings only after recording the vehicle’s pairing steps.
Restart, update and reinstall in the right order
Spotify recommends updating the app and devices, checking internet connectivity before departure, restarting the app and restarting the car. Apply those steps without destroying your offline files first.
- While online, update Android, Android Auto and the music app from their respective app or system update screens.
- Open the music app and confirm the account, subscription and downloaded items.
- Force-close and reopen the music app.
- Restart the phone.
- Turn the vehicle off, wait for its head unit to shut down, then restart the car.
- Reconnect Android Auto and test an online track.
- Only reinstall the music app as a last resort, because reinstalling can remove downloads and, for Spotify, can make Offline Backup unavailable until the cache is rebuilt.
Do not clear app storage or cache as a routine first step when preparing for an offline drive. Those actions can remove the very files you need.

Use a fallback to identify the failing layer
If Android Auto remains silent but the app plays offline on the phone, bypass Android Auto temporarily. Spotify documents Bluetooth, AUX, USB and Android Auto as separate connection paths.
- Bluetooth: Pair the phone with the vehicle and play the downloaded track. This tests the phone app and speakers without the Android Auto interface.
- AUX: If the car has an auxiliary input, connect the phone with an audio cable and select the AUX source.
- USB media playback: Some vehicles can play supported audio files from a USB storage device, although this is separate from Android Auto and may not support streaming-app downloads.
- Android Auto: Re-test after the fallback works. If Bluetooth or AUX succeeds, investigate Android Auto compatibility, permissions or the USB/wireless transport.
A fallback is a diagnostic path, not a way to make protected streaming downloads appear as ordinary files. You cannot copy most app downloads to a USB stick and expect the car’s file player to read them.

The table describes documented service behavior, not a guarantee that every vehicle, account region or app version exposes identical menu labels. If a label differs, look for the service’s Downloaded, Offline or Downloads section.

Match the symptom to the fix
Android Auto connects, but the music app is absent
Install a current Android Auto-compatible version of the app, sign in on the phone and check that the app is enabled in Android Auto’s launcher customization. If the app is not compatible, Android Auto cannot add it to the car interface.
The app appears, but every song buffers offline
The displayed library is not proof of local storage. Return to the phone, open the app’s downloaded or offline view and play a track with all data disabled. Download the content again if that test fails.
Only one album or song fails
Try a different downloaded track. A single incomplete or unavailable item can fail while the rest of the cache works. Remove and re-download that item while online, then retest on the phone.
Music worked last month but not today
For YouTube Music, reconnect within the 30-day validation window. For Spotify, check whether storage was filled, the cache was cleared or the app was reinstalled, and rebuild the cache while online.
The phone plays offline but the car does not
Use another USB data cable or supported port, restart the phone and vehicle, and test Bluetooth or AUX. If a fallback works but Android Auto does not, the remaining issue is the Android Auto connection, compatibility or head-unit software rather than the music download.
When to contact support
Contact the music-app developer for account, subscription, download, cache or offline-mode problems. Contact the vehicle manufacturer or aftermarket head-unit maker for compatibility, USB-port and persistent Android Auto connection problems. Google’s Android Auto help center also provides troubleshooting and bug-report routes.

Include the phone model and Android version, vehicle and head-unit model, wired or wireless connection type, app name and version, whether the track plays offline on the phone, and the exact point at which playback fails. That information tells support whether to investigate the app’s local files or the vehicle connection.
