Yes. You can run Google’s Android Auto Desktop Head Unit Emulator (DHU) on a Windows, macOS, or Linux computer without owning or entering a compatible car. The computer acts as the simulated head unit, but Google’s documented setup still connects an Android phone to it; the DHU is not a phone-free desktop version of Android Auto.
This is a developer test setup, not a way to use Android Auto on your computer as a substitute for a car display. If you meant the Android Automotive OS emulator, that is a different tool for running a virtual in-car operating system.
What does the Android Auto emulator do?
The DHU simulates the vehicle head unit: the screen and controls that would ordinarily display Android Auto. It connects to an Android phone, which supplies the Android Auto session, so an actual car or aftermarket head unit is not needed for this documented test workflow. Google describes the DHU as running on Windows, macOS, and Linux in its Android Auto DHU guide.

That distinction matters: the emulator does not install a complete Android Auto experience on your computer. Instead, it provides a simulated display for checking how an app intended for Android Auto behaves when connected to a phone. You can use it to exercise parts of an app’s in-car interface without driving or having a vehicle available.

The DHU is aimed at app development and testing. Its simulated inputs and display let a developer examine behavior under selected head-unit conditions, but they do not establish that an app will work correctly with every production vehicle, stereo, control layout, or connection. Google treats testing in a real vehicle as a separate part of evaluating the user experience.
What do you need before you start?
Prepare a development computer, an Android phone, Android Studio’s SDK tools, the app you want to test, and a USB connection between the phone and computer. Google’s DHU guide starts with a mobile device running Android 9 (API level 28) or later. The phone must have Android Auto installed, and you need to enable the phone’s system developer options.
- Computer: Windows, macOS, or Linux, with Android Studio available to manage SDK components.
- Phone: An eligible Android device with Android Auto installed. The documented DHU procedure connects the phone to the computer; it does not describe a phone-free setup.
- USB data connection: Use a cable that transfers data, not one that only charges. Match the connectors to your phone and computer; Google does not prescribe one connector type for every device.
- App to test: Install the app on the phone before starting the DHU session.
If the phone runs Android 10 (API level 29) or later, Google says to sign in to the Play Store and update Android Auto before the first DHU run. That instruction is specific to the initial setup; do not assume the same preparatory step is needed on every later launch.
There are two different developer settings involved in the more advanced connection method. The phone’s system developer options are not the same as Android Auto’s own developer mode. ADB tunneling also requires USB debugging, a separate system setting that allows Android Debug Bridge communication. Keep those distinctions in mind when following the connection steps.

How do you install the Desktop Head Unit Emulator?
Install the DHU package through Android Studio’s SDK Manager rather than looking for a separate desktop Android Auto app. Google’s documented package location is SDK_LOCATION/extras/google/auto/, where SDK_LOCATION means the SDK directory configured for Android Studio.
- Open Android Studio and open the SDK Manager. From the Welcome screen, use More Actions > SDK Manager; in an open project, use Tools > SDK Manager.
- Select the SDK Tools tab.
- Find and select Android Auto Desktop Head Unit Emulator, then apply the change to download and install it.
- Locate the installed package in
SDK_LOCATION/extras/google/auto/. The executable is nameddesktop-head-uniton macOS and Linux anddesktop-head-unit.exeon Windows. - On macOS or Linux, open a terminal in the DHU directory and run
chmod +x ./desktop-head-unitif needed to make the executable runnable.
The DHU package is separate from the app being tested. Installing it gives the computer the simulated head-unit program; you still need the phone with Android Auto and the app installed, plus the USB connection for the documented run instructions.
How do you connect the phone to the DHU?
Google documents two USB-based connection methods: Accessory Mode, which it recommends for DHU 2.x, and ADB tunneling. Start with Accessory Mode for the most direct route. If it does not fit your setup, use the ADB method rather than assuming that wireless ADB automatically makes a cable-free DHU session supported.
Option 1: Accessory Mode
- Connect the unlocked Android phone to the development computer with a USB data cable.
- Open a terminal or command prompt in the DHU installation directory.
- Run
./desktop-head-unit --usbon macOS or Linux. On Windows, run the corresponding DHU executable with the USB option. - If the phone prompts you to approve a connection, follow the on-screen instructions. The DHU should open a simulated Android Auto head-unit display.
This USB connection is between the phone and the computer; it is not a connection to a car. Google notes a Windows caveat: Accessory Mode may require WinUSB and could interfere with ADB. The exact behavior depends on the computer’s setup, so do not treat this mode as a guaranteed fix for every Windows connection issue.

Option 2: ADB tunneling
ADB tunneling forwards the DHU connection through Android Debug Bridge. It requires Android Auto’s developer mode, USB debugging on the phone, and a USB-attached phone; enabling Android Auto developer mode alone does not turn on USB debugging.
- In Android Auto, open Settings, scroll to Version and permission info, then tap that section 10 times to enable Android Auto’s developer mode. Confirm the prompt if one appears.
- Open the Android Auto overflow menu and choose Developer settings.
- Start the head unit server. In the same developer settings, make sure Add new cars to Android Auto is enabled.
- On the phone, enable the system’s developer options and USB debugging if they are not already enabled. Connect the phone to the computer over USB and unlock it. Approve any USB debugging authorization prompt.
- In a computer terminal or command prompt, run
adb forward tcp:5277 tcp:5277. Google’s documented forwarding command uses TCP port 5277. - From the DHU installation directory, launch
desktop-head-unit.exeon Windows or./desktop-head-uniton macOS or Linux. - Accept any terms or permissions shown on the phone the first time the connection is made.
If ADB cannot find the phone, check that it is unlocked, USB debugging is enabled, and any authorization prompt has been accepted. If Accessory Mode is causing a Windows conflict, the ADB method is the documented alternative; the two connection modes should not be treated as identical or as requiring the same settings.
What can you test in the DHU—and what can’t it prove?
The DHU supports touch and rotary input, several display sizes, selected sensor readings, and driving restrictions. Google lists resolutions of 480p (800×480), 720p (1280×720), and 1080p (1920×1080) in its DHU documentation. These are emulator capabilities, not claims about a particular car’s screen.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThose options help developers check how an app presents information and responds to supported simulated inputs. They can reveal issues in an app’s interface or behavior under the emulator’s chosen conditions. They cannot reproduce every vehicle’s hardware, software, controls, connection behavior, or driver’s actual environment.

In particular, a successful DHU session is not proof of compatibility with a specific make or model. Google separately recommends real-vehicle testing to assess user experience before Play review. The emulator is useful for development before that stage, but it does not replace vehicle-specific validation.
Is the Android Automotive OS emulator the same thing?
No. The DHU simulates an Android Auto head unit receiving a session from a connected phone. The Android Automotive OS emulator runs a virtual device with an Automotive OS system image; it is a different platform and a different test target.
| Question | Android Auto DHU | Android Automotive OS emulator |
|---|---|---|
| What runs in the simulated environment? | A head unit display for Android Auto from a connected Android phone. | An Automotive OS virtual device using an Automotive system image. |
| Does it require a physical car? | No; the computer simulates the head unit. | No; it runs as a virtual device. |
| Is a phone part of the documented setup? | Yes; the DHU instructions connect a mobile device. | The setup uses an Automotive OS system image rather than the same phone-connected Android Auto session. |
| Which should you choose? | Choose this to test an Android Auto app experience. | Choose this when developing for Android Automotive OS. |
For Automotive OS, Google’s emulator guide describes installing a suitable Automotive system image through SDK Manager, creating an Automotive hardware-profile Android Virtual Device (AVD), and running it from Android Studio. Image and hardware-profile availability can vary, and not every image should be assumed to include the Play Store. Do not follow Automotive OS emulator instructions if your goal is to display Android Auto from a phone in the DHU.
What should you do if the DHU opens to a blank screen?
A blank display does not have one confirmed cause or one guaranteed remedy. Google’s documented recovery sequence is to restart the connection components and respond to any permission requests.

- Close the DHU.
- Stop the Android Auto head unit server on the phone, then start it again from Android Auto’s developer settings.
- Relaunch the DHU from the computer.
- If the phone requests additional permissions, approve them and relaunch the DHU if needed.
If the display remains blank, recheck the selected connection method and its prerequisites: a USB data connection for either documented method, and USB debugging plus the ADB forward for tunneling. The restart procedure is Google’s suggested troubleshooting sequence, not a promise that it resolves every display problem.
Can you connect the DHU wirelessly?
Google’s DHU run instructions describe connecting the phone to the computer over USB. General Android documentation covers wireless debugging, but that capability alone does not establish a supported cable-free DHU procedure. For this documented setup, plan on a USB connection.
Can an ordinary tablet replace the computer or car?
Not as an out-of-the-box shortcut. Google documents an advanced Android Automotive OS test option involving a Pixel Tablet, but it requires access to an allow-listed image and flashing that image onto the tablet. Google also warns of wired-connection problems and advises using a wireless connection where possible. This is a specialized, access-restricted test path, not the standard way to run the DHU or a reason to buy an ordinary tablet for Android Auto testing. Details are in Google’s Pixel Tablet testing guide.
Which setup should you choose?
- You are testing an Android Auto app and have no compatible car: Use the DHU on a computer with an eligible Android phone connected over USB.
- You are building for Android Automotive OS: Create and run an Automotive OS AVD in Android Studio instead; it tests a different platform.
- You need confidence in a particular production vehicle: Treat emulator results as an early development check, then arrange appropriate real-vehicle testing.
- You have no Android phone: The documented DHU workflow does not remove that dependency. An Automotive OS AVD may be relevant only if your development target is Automotive OS, not phone-based Android Auto.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Android Auto on my laptop while driving?
The DHU is a development display for testing an app, not a supported replacement for a vehicle’s Android Auto screen. It is not a safe or appropriate way to watch or operate Android Auto while driving.
Does the DHU work with every Android Auto app?
The emulator provides a test environment, but whether an app can appear or behave as expected depends on the app’s implementation and the features it supports. The emulator itself does not certify an app for distribution or compatibility with every vehicle.
Can I test a navigation app with simulated driving?
The DHU can simulate selected sensor readings and driving restrictions, which can help exercise some app behavior. The official documentation does not establish that this reproduces real GPS reception, road conditions, or a vehicle’s navigation hardware.
Will the emulator show exactly what my car’s screen looks like?
No. The DHU offers supported display resolutions and input simulations, but a real head unit may differ in dimensions, controls, software, and behavior. Use the emulator for development checks, not as a vehicle-specific visual guarantee.
