If an installed app is missing from Android Auto, open it on your phone first, then reconnect the car. Next check whether Android or Samsung battery controls have put the app to sleep, whether the app is actually Android Auto-compatible, whether it is enabled in the launcher settings, and whether your car requires a wired USB connection. Android Auto does not mirror every phone app: its launcher lists only apps that declare support for compatible in-car use.
What a missing app usually means
Seeing an app on your phone does not guarantee that it can appear in the Android Auto launcher. Android Auto presents a separate, driving-focused app list. Google describes that launcher as a list of Android Auto-compatible navigation, media and communication apps. A normal phone app, a web shortcut and a Play Store link are not automatically eligible.
There are two broad failure patterns:
- One app is missing: the app may be asleep or temporarily disabled, hidden in launcher configuration, or ineligible for Android Auto.
- Many supported apps are missing: check launcher settings, the Android Auto connection, battery restrictions and vehicle/phone compatibility before treating the problem as an app-specific fault.
The order below starts with the quickest, least destructive checks. Do not reset the vehicle system until you have established that the apps are eligible and the phone is actually running the Android Auto connection.

Start with the missing app itself. Unlock the phone, launch the app normally and leave it open long enough for it to finish any first-run setup or sign-in prompt. Then disconnect and reconnect Android Auto, or end the current Android Auto session and start it again.

Google says that apps can be temporarily disabled when the phone considers them unused. Opening the app re-enables it, which is why this simple step can restore an app without reinstalling anything. Check the Android Auto launcher after reconnecting rather than while the old session is still on screen.
If the app returns, the problem was the phone’s unused-app state rather than the car’s app list. If it remains absent, continue with the battery controls and eligibility checks below.
2. Check battery controls that disable unused apps
On Samsung phones, two settings are especially relevant: Auto disable unused apps and Put unused apps to sleep. Google notes that Samsung may temporarily disable apps that have not been used. An app in that state can remain visible in the phone’s app list while being unavailable to Android Auto until it is re-enabled.

- Open Settings and use the Settings search field for unused apps, sleeping apps or battery. Samsung moves the exact menu location between One UI releases.
- Review Auto disable unused apps. Turn it off if you do not want Samsung to disable infrequently used apps, or remove the affected app from the unused-app list if that option is presented.
- Review Put unused apps to sleep and its sleeping/deep-sleep lists. Remove the missing app from those lists when the phone offers an exemption or an “awake” option.
- Open the app again, then reconnect Android Auto.
Other Android phones may use different names for the same idea, such as unused-app optimization, sleeping apps, background restrictions or automatic app hibernation. Look for a control that can disable, hibernate or restrict an app that has not been opened recently. Avoid changing battery policy for every app when only one Android Auto app is affected; exempt the specific app first.

3. Review the Android Auto launcher configuration
Android Auto has its own settings on the phone. Google documents this path:
Settings > Connected Devices > Connection Preferences > Android Auto
Open that screen while the phone is unlocked and look for the launcher or app-list configuration. On some versions it is labelled as a launcher-customization option. Confirm that the app is not turned off or excluded from the launcher, and check whether the order has simply placed it farther down the list.
After changing the list, reconnect Android Auto so the car receives the current configuration. If the settings page shows no entry for the app at all, that is useful evidence: it usually means Android Auto does not recognize the installed app as an eligible car app, or the app is still disabled by the phone.

4. Confirm that the app supports Android Auto
The launcher is not a general-purpose mirror of the phone. It lists apps whose developers have implemented the Android Auto integration allowed for that app category. Google identifies navigation, media and communication apps as examples of the supported groups.
Why an ordinary app does not appear
Android Developers documents a technical requirement for parked apps: an activity must declare the android.intent.category.CAR_LAUNCHER category in its intent filter to advertise Android Auto support. If the developer has not made that declaration, Android Auto has no supported car entry to place in the launcher.
This distinction explains several common misunderstandings:
- An app can be installed and fully functional on the phone yet have no Android Auto launcher entry.
- A web page saved to the home screen is not the same as an Android Auto app.
- A Play Store or other web intent may open on the phone instead of becoming a selectable car app.
- Installing an unrelated app with a similar name cannot add Android Auto support to the original app.
Check the app developer’s current Android Auto documentation or Play Store description for explicit car support. If the developer has not declared support, there is no phone setting that can force the app into the launcher. Do not attempt to bypass the restriction while driving; the supported-app model exists to keep the in-car interface appropriate for vehicle use.

5. Check phone, vehicle and head-unit compatibility
Even an eligible app cannot appear reliably if the Android Auto connection itself is not supported by the combination of phone, vehicle and head unit. Use Google’s current Android Auto vehicle-compatibility information for the exact make, model and head-unit generation, and verify the phone requirements shown for your Android version and device.
Compatibility is specific to the installed system, not just the badge on the dashboard. Two vehicles with the same model name can have different head units or software generations, and an aftermarket unit may have its own Android Auto requirements. If the vehicle is not listed as compatible, an app-level fix will not solve the missing launcher.
When the car requires wired Android Auto
Some systems support Android Auto only over USB. Jeep’s Uconnect guidance notes that Uconnect 4 systems and earlier may require a USB connection. In that case:

- Use a known-good USB data cable, not a cable intended only for charging.
- Use the vehicle’s Android Auto-capable USB port; a second port may provide power without carrying the required data connection.
- Use the connector that matches the phone and head unit, such as USB-C on the phone when applicable.
- Unlock the phone and accept any Android Auto permissions or prompts that appear.
- Wait for the Android Auto session to establish, then check the launcher again.
A USB-C data cable can repair a failed wired connection, but it cannot make an incompatible app appear. If the phone connects for charging but Android Auto never starts, treat that as a connection or compatibility problem first; if Android Auto starts and only one app is absent, return to the eligibility and battery checks.

6. Use the symptom to choose the next check

7. Reconnect cleanly after each change
Android Auto may keep the previous launcher state for the duration of a session. After changing a battery setting, re-enabling an app or modifying the launcher list, end the current session and establish a fresh one.
- For a wired setup, unplug the USB cable, unlock the phone, wait briefly and reconnect it to the correct port.
- For a wireless-capable setup, end Android Auto from the vehicle and reconnect the phone using the vehicle’s normal wireless pairing path.
- Keep the phone unlocked during the first reconnection so permission prompts are visible.
- Open the launcher only after the head unit reports that Android Auto is active.
If a fresh connection restores the app, the old session had not yet received the updated phone state. If it does not, continue with the branch that matches the number of missing apps.
When reinstalling helps—and when it does not
Reinstalling can clear a damaged installation, but it does not grant Android Auto support to a phone-only app. Treat it as a later app-specific measure, not the first response to a missing launcher entry.
Before reinstalling, verify that the app is supported and that the phone has not disabled it. If you do reinstall, record any offline content, account details or permissions the app needs, then open it once on the phone before reconnecting Android Auto. An app that still lacks a CAR_LAUNCHER declaration will remain absent after a clean installation.
What not to change first
- Do not reset the vehicle head unit immediately. A reset cannot turn an unsupported phone app into an Android Auto app and may erase unrelated vehicle preferences.
- Do not assume every Play Store app belongs in the car. Installation and Android Auto eligibility are separate conditions.
- Do not infer support from a phone shortcut. A browser page or Play Store intent can remain phone-only.
- Do not replace a working cable when the problem is one missing app. Cable troubleshooting is most relevant when Android Auto fails to establish or when the vehicle requires wired operation.
- Do not disable battery protections for the entire phone without a reason. First exempt the affected app or adjust the unused-app control that actually disabled it.
A complete decision path
- Open the missing app on the phone. Reconnect Android Auto and check the launcher.
- If it is still absent, inspect battery controls. On Samsung, check Auto disable unused apps and Put unused apps to sleep; on other phones, find the equivalent unused-app or hibernation controls.
- Open the official Android Auto settings path: Settings > Connected Devices > Connection Preferences > Android Auto. Review the launcher configuration and confirm the app is not excluded.
- Verify eligibility. Confirm that the developer supports Android Auto and that the app is intended for a supported navigation, media or communication use. A phone-only app cannot be forced into the car launcher.
- Verify the phone and vehicle. Check Google’s current compatibility information for both, including the exact head-unit generation.
- Test the required connection. If the vehicle needs wired Android Auto—such as some Uconnect 4 or earlier systems—use the correct USB port and a known-good data cable.
- Classify the result. One missing app points back to eligibility or app-specific disablement; many missing apps point back to launcher state, connection or compatibility.
Why the launcher can differ from the phone
Android Auto is designed as a controlled in-car interface rather than a projection of every phone screen. The launcher therefore depends on three separate conditions: the app must be declared for car use by its developer, the phone must currently have the app enabled, and the vehicle must have a functioning compatible Android Auto session. A failure in any one of those layers produces the same confusing symptom—a familiar app is visible on the phone but not in the car.
Separating those layers prevents wasted troubleshooting. Battery and unused-app controls explain why an otherwise supported app can disappear temporarily. The CAR_LAUNCHER declaration explains why an ordinary app never appears at all. Vehicle, phone and USB checks explain why several valid apps can vanish together or why the launcher never loads.
Final checklist before contacting support
- The app has been opened on the phone recently.
- The app is not listed under an unused, sleeping or automatically disabled state.
- The Android Auto launcher configuration does not exclude it.
- The developer explicitly supports Android Auto for that app.
- The phone and exact vehicle/head-unit combination meet Google’s compatibility requirements.
- A wired vehicle has been tested with the correct USB data port and a known-good cable.
- You tested a fresh Android Auto session after each relevant change.
If all seven checks pass and only one supported app remains missing, the remaining fault is likely app-specific and should be reported to that app’s developer with the phone model, Android version, vehicle/head-unit model and Android Auto connection type. If multiple supported apps remain absent, provide those same details to the vehicle or Android Auto support channel because the shared connection or compatibility layer is the stronger suspect.
