Use Android Keystore, biometrics and Play Integrity for different security boundaries—not as interchangeable defenses. Keystore protects cryptographic key material on a device; Jetpack Biometric provides a local user-presence check; Play Integrity gives your backend signals about whether a request came from a recognized app, a licensed installation and an acceptable device. Your server must still authenticate the account, authorize the action and apply fraud and rate-limit controls.

The practical production design is layered: keep device-held keys non-exportable, require a biometric only for narrowly scoped sensitive operations, and call Play Integrity when an action is valuable enough to justify its latency and operational cost. Validate every integrity token on the backend and choose an allow, step-up, rate-limit or deny response from the complete request context.

What each Android security control actually protects

Security failures often begin with a category mistake. A key-protection mechanism is treated as authentication, a biometric prompt is treated as proof of authorization, or an app/device verdict is treated as an identity system. The controls complement one another because they answer different questions.

Control Boundary protected Where the decision is made Best production use
Android Keystore Cryptographic key material and permitted key use On the device, with hardware-backed capability where available Wrapping refresh tokens, encrypting local databases, and signing operations
Jetpack Biometric/BiometricPrompt Local user presence or device credential confirmation On the device, before an app operation or Keystore use Unlocking a narrowly scoped high-risk action
Play Integrity Signals about app recognition, licensing, device integrity and abuse indicators Your backend after verification through Google Play Risk-based decisions for recovery, transfers, entitlements and abuse-sensitive actions

Android Keystore stores keys in a container that makes them more difficult to extract from the device. The key material is non-exportable, and authorizations can restrict its purpose, algorithm, permitted modes and authentication requirements. That lowers the impact of a stolen file system image or an attempt to copy a secret out of the app. It does not make a compromised app process harmless: code that can legitimately invoke an available key may still try to use it, so key policy and server controls remain necessary.

BiometricPrompt answers a local question: has a person just satisfied the device’s enrolled biometric or credential requirement? It does not tell your server which account is acting, whether that account may perform a transfer, or whether the APK has been modified. A successful prompt should release one operation, such as a Keystore decrypt or signing action, rather than become a long-lived authorization token.

Play Integrity answers a backend risk question. Its signals can indicate whether a request is associated with an unmodified app recognized by Google Play, an installation with the expected licensing relationship and a genuine or certified device, along with other abuse indicators. Your backend—not the APK—interprets those signals in the context of the account, request, history and business value.

A production architecture that keeps the boundaries separate

A robust flow usually has four layers. Account authentication establishes a session using your normal identity system. Keystore protects device-held credentials or signing keys. BiometricPrompt can gate a local use of those keys. Play Integrity adds an app/device signal to selected server requests. Authorization, entitlement checks, fraud detection and rate limits stay on the server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Authenticate the account. Issue a normal server session or access token. Do not substitute an integrity verdict or a biometric result for account authentication.
  2. Protect local secrets. Generate or import the minimum required key into Android Keystore, with explicit purposes and authentication constraints. Keep refresh-token wrapping keys, local database encryption keys and signing keys out of ordinary app storage.
  3. Gate sensitive local use. For an operation that needs a person present, invoke Jetpack Biometric and allow a successful result to authorize one Keystore operation or a short, narrowly defined transaction.
  4. Add an integrity signal at the server boundary. At moments such as account recovery, a high-value transfer, an entitlement change or an abuse-sensitive game action, obtain a Play Integrity token and send it with the request to your backend.
  5. Make the final policy decision on the backend. Verify the token through Google Play, check that its request binding and app details match the request, combine the result with session and fraud data, then allow, step up, rate-limit or deny.

This separation also gives you a recovery path. A lost phone, a changed biometric enrollment or a device that cannot provide a preferred integrity tier should not automatically make an account unrecoverable. Use a separately authenticated recovery process and re-enroll device keys after the server has approved recovery.

  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Using Android Keystore correctly

Choose Keystore for secrets that must remain on the device

Keystore is worth the complexity when the app needs a cryptographic secret but should not be able to export that secret as ordinary bytes. Typical examples include a key that wraps a refresh token, an encryption key for a local database, and a private signing key used to prove possession to your service. Generate the key with only the algorithm, purposes and modes that the operation requires.

Prefer hardware-backed protection when the device exposes it, but treat that as a capability rather than a universal assumption. Android versions and manufacturers differ, and some devices cannot provide the same secure-hardware guarantees. Your protocol should continue to function with a software-backed Keystore implementation while applying the server policy appropriate to that assurance level.

Bind key use to the right authorization

Keystore key authorizations can constrain encryption, decryption, signing or verification, as well as permitted cryptographic modes. You can also require recent user authentication before use. Keep these constraints narrow: a key created solely to unwrap a refresh token should not also be usable for arbitrary signing, and a biometric-gated key should not silently become an always-available key after a UI refactor.

Plan for invalidation and rotation. A user may remove the lock screen, change enrolled biometrics or clear app data; depending on the key’s authorization, those events can make a key unusable. Detect the failure, revoke the server-side device binding, authenticate the account through recovery, and create a replacement key. Never respond by storing the old secret in plaintext as a fallback.

Know what Keystore cannot stop

Keystore reduces extraction risk; it does not prevent an attacker who controls the running app process from requesting an operation that the key policy permits. A rooted or instrumented environment may also alter application logic around the cryptographic call. Use server-side replay protection, short-lived credentials, transaction signing and integrity signals for high-value actions. Keystore is a custody control, not a complete anti-tampering system.

Adding biometrics without turning a prompt into authorization

Use the platform flow

Use the Jetpack Biometric library and BiometricPrompt rather than writing sensor-specific code. The library handles the supported biometric classes and device-credential fallback exposed by the platform. Financial, healthcare and identity-management applications are especially suitable candidates for this local authentication pattern.

  1. Define the protected operation. Decide exactly what the prompt unlocks: for example, decrypting a one-time transaction secret or signing a server challenge.
  2. Create a Keystore key with authentication required. Bind the key to the intended purpose and, where appropriate, require user authentication for each use or for a short validity window.
  3. Configure BiometricPrompt. Explain the action in the prompt, request the authenticator strength your risk policy accepts, and provide a device-credential fallback when your recovery design supports it.
  4. Use the success callback only to continue the operation. Do not treat a Boolean success value as a reusable session credential. Complete the single Keystore operation, send the resulting proof to the server, and discard transient material.
  5. Handle cancellation and lockout. Offer a clear retry path, respect temporary biometric lockout, and route permanent failure to a separately authenticated recovery flow.

A biometric match is local evidence of user presence, not remote authorization. The server still checks whether the account owns the resource, whether the transaction is within limits and whether other risk signals require additional verification. Avoid making biometrics the only account-recovery mechanism: enrolled data can change, sensors can fail, and users can lose access to the device.

Deploying Play Integrity for backend anti-abuse decisions

Set up projects and environments first

Play Integrity requires a Google Cloud project linked to Play Console. Keep testing and production projects separate where practical so test traffic, quotas and policy experiments cannot contaminate production telemetry. Protect the backend endpoint that accepts integrity tokens; the token exchange is not a substitute for endpoint authentication.

Use standard requests at valuable moments

For a standard request, prepare the token provider, hash the relevant request data into requestHash, obtain the token, send it to your backend and have the backend verify it through Google Play before acting. Bind the hash to the exact action and request instance. Do not put raw sensitive business data in requestHash or a nonce: Google notes that these fields are visible to the app and Google, so hash or encrypt sensitive material first.

Request integrity close to the action it protects. Account recovery, high-value transfers, entitlement changes and abuse-sensitive game actions are stronger candidates than every read-only API call. Do not cache a successful verdict for later actions; a cached result can be replayed after the device, app state or request context has changed.

Verify in the right order

  1. Authenticate the endpoint and caller. Require the normal session or request credentials before processing the token.
  2. Verify the Play Integrity token. Send the token to Google Play from your backend and reject malformed, expired or unverifiable responses.
  3. Check request binding. Confirm that the returned request details correspond to the hash of the action and parameters your server is about to perform.
  4. Check app recognition and licensing. Confirm that the package, certificate and installation relationship match the release and distribution channel your policy permits.
  5. Interpret device labels with context. Higher trust tiers cover fewer devices. Combine the label with account history, velocity, transaction value and other fraud signals rather than treating one label as an identity assertion.
  6. Apply a tiered response. Allow ordinary traffic, require step-up verification for elevated risk, rate-limit suspicious activity, or deny when the combined evidence crosses your abuse threshold.

The backend is the security boundary. Google’s codelab describes server-side validation as a key security element and explicitly notes that its sample omits endpoint authentication and persistent storage. A production implementation must add both, plus logging that supports incident review without retaining unnecessary sensitive payloads.

Latency, quota and reach trade-offs

Play Integrity is not free of operational cost. Google documents a default allowance of up to 10,000 total requests per day, standard-request average latency of a few hundred milliseconds and classic-request average latency of a few seconds. Standard-request documentation also describes up to five token-provider preparations per minute per app instance. These figures are service documentation values, not a guarantee for every network, device or region.

Play Integrity consideration Documented value or implication
Default daily quota Up to 10,000 total requests per day (Google documentation, 2026)
Standard-request latency A few hundred milliseconds on average (Google documentation, 2026)
Classic-request latency A few seconds on average (Google documentation, 2026)
Token-provider preparation Up to five preparations per minute per app instance for standard requests (Google documentation, 2026)

Budget calls around business impact rather than polling. Queue or retry carefully, instrument quota usage, and define what happens when the service is temporarily unavailable. For a low-value read, a conservative fallback may preserve availability; for an irreversible transfer, postponing the action or requiring another verification method may be safer. Do not silently convert an integrity outage into unconditional allow.

Controls that are usually not worth the complexity

  • Using Play Integrity as authentication. It does not replace sessions, account recovery, authorization, fraud detection or rate limits.
  • Making final decisions inside the APK. An attacker can modify client code. Keep token verification, entitlement checks and policy decisions on the backend.
  • Replaying cached verdicts. Bind each verdict to the current request and verify it when the protected action occurs.
  • Putting raw secrets in requestHash or nonce. Hash or encrypt first because the values are visible to the app and Google.
  • Requiring the highest device tier everywhere. Fewer devices qualify for higher tiers; a universal block creates avoidable reach and false-positive costs. Reserve strict requirements for actions whose loss justifies them.
  • Writing custom biometric cryptography. Jetpack Biometric plus Keystore authorization already covers the local user-presence boundary for most applications. Custom sensor code increases maintenance and failure modes.
  • Shipping the Play Integrity codelab unchanged. Its sample intentionally omits endpoint authentication and persistent storage, both required in a real service.

A decision framework for your app

Start with the asset and attacker you are trying to protect against. If the problem is extraction of a device-held secret, choose Keystore. If the problem is confirming that a person is present before a local operation, add BiometricPrompt. If the problem is automated abuse or a modified client reaching a valuable endpoint, add Play Integrity and enforce the result on the server.

Question Use this control Additional server requirement
Must a private key remain non-exportable? Android Keystore Short-lived credentials, rotation and revocation
Must a person confirm a sensitive local action? Jetpack Biometric/BiometricPrompt with an authenticated Keystore key Account authorization and recovery path
Could a modified or unlicensed client automate a high-value request? Play Integrity at the action boundary Backend token verification, request binding, fraud controls and rate limits
Must the feature work offline? Keystore and local biometric gating can operate within their device boundary Defer server authorization and integrity-dependent actions until connectivity returns

Measure false positives and reach before tightening policy. Begin with telemetry, compare integrity outcomes with confirmed abuse, and introduce step-up verification before a blanket deny. Document which actions require which signals so a future feature does not accidentally treat a convenient client check as a security boundary.

Production checklist

  • Define the asset, threat and protected boundary for every sensitive operation.
  • Generate least-privilege Keystore keys and detect hardware-backed capability variation.
  • Specify what biometric success unlocks and provide recovery for enrollment changes and lockout.
  • Authenticate every backend endpoint independently of Play Integrity.
  • Hash request data for requestHash; never send raw sensitive business values.
  • Verify Play Integrity tokens on the backend and match request details before acting.
  • Use standard requests at high-value moments rather than calling for every low-risk operation.
  • Track the 10,000-request daily default, preparation limits and latency in operations dashboards.
  • Use allow, step-up, rate-limit and deny outcomes instead of one universal device threshold.
  • Test tampered APKs, unsupported devices, biometric lockout, key invalidation, offline mode and Play Integrity outages.
