Android 16 Live Updates are promoted, glanceable notifications for an activity that is happening now, such as turn-by-turn navigation, a phone call, a rideshare, or a food delivery. They can appear at the top of the notification drawer, on the lock screen and as a compact status-bar chip, so you can check progress without reopening the app.
The catch explains why the feature feels oddly invisible: Android 16 alone is not enough. The app has to implement Google’s Live Updates APIs, request promotion, satisfy notification rules and obtain the required permission. Your phone maker must expose the relevant surfaces, and you can disable, dismiss or demote the update. Google’s “forgot to tell anyone” problem is therefore a discoverability and rollout problem, not evidence of a measured awareness rate.
What Android Live Updates actually are
Live Updates are a category of Android notification designed for an ongoing, user-initiated and time-sensitive activity with a recognizable beginning and end. Instead of treating every event as an ordinary alert, Android can keep the activity visible and update its state as it progresses.
The information you can see without opening an app
A promoted update may stay at the top of the notification drawer, appear on the lock screen and become a status-bar chip. The chip communicates a compact state, icon, countdown or critical piece of text. Google’s implementation guidance limits the chip to a maximum width of 96dp; when text will not fit, it may show only an icon.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Promoted cards are expanded by default and cannot be collapsed. You can still dismiss a card or demote it to a standard notification. The system discourages an app from immediately reposting an update you dismissed, because repeated reposting can lead you to revoke that app’s notification-posting permission.
Why ProgressStyle matters
ProgressStyle is Android 16’s principal API for progress-centric journeys. It represents a journey with milestones, points and segments, allowing an app to show where a delivery, route or other process is between its start and finish rather than merely changing a line of text.
Where Live Updates appear
| Surface | What it is useful for | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Notification drawer | A detailed, continuously updated card near the top of your notifications | The card is expanded by default and is not collapsible. |
| Lock screen | Checking progress while the phone is locked | Visibility still depends on your lock-screen notification privacy and device settings. |
| Status-bar chip | A quick glance at a state, icon, countdown or critical text | The implementation guide specifies a maximum width of 96dp, so text can be shortened to an icon. |
| Some connected Wear OS devices | Following a supported activity from a watch | Bridging is limited to compatible connected devices and supported implementations. |
Why Android 16 by itself does not give you Live Updates
Live Updates are a platform capability, not a universal switch that converts every notification. Four separate pieces have to line up:

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
- The operating system: the phone must run Android 16 or a later release that exposes the feature.
- The app: the developer must build an eligible notification and update it as the activity changes.
- Promotion authorization: the app must hold the non-runtime
POST_PROMOTED_NOTIFICATIONSpermission and request promotion for the notification. - The device maker and user settings: the OEM can add criteria, while your notification, lock-screen and battery settings can limit what you see.
That chain is why one Android 16 phone can show a rideshare chip while another shows only a conventional notification from the same service. It also explains why there is no dependable, platform-wide list of every app that supports Live Updates: support is implemented per app and can vary by device surface.
Notification formats that can qualify
Google’s guidance names five eligible notification styles:
| Style | Typical use |
|---|---|
| Standard | A concise ongoing activity with ordinary notification content |
BigTextStyle |
An activity that needs a larger text description |
CallStyle |
An ongoing phone or communication call |
ProgressStyle |
A journey with milestones and segments, such as navigation or delivery |
MetricStyle |
An activity represented by a changing metric or value |
What prevents promotion
An otherwise ongoing notification can fail promotion if it uses a custom RemoteViews layout, is a grouped summary, is colorized or belongs to a channel with minimum importance. The app also needs an ongoing flag and a content title. OEM-specific rules may impose additional restrictions.

Which activities are a good fit
The defining test is not whether an event is interesting. It is whether you started or authorized an activity that is actively progressing and needs occasional attention until it reaches a clear endpoint.

| Good candidates | Why they fit |
|---|---|
| Active turn-by-turn navigation | The route is in progress, has changing milestones and ends at the destination. |
| Ongoing phone calls | The call has a live state and a clear end when someone hangs up. |
| Rideshare tracking | A driver is approaching, arriving or carrying you to a destination. |
| Food-delivery tracking | An order moves through preparation, pickup and delivery. |
| A flight during an active travel phase | A flight notification may become appropriate when boarding begins or when you reach the airport. |
Examples that should not become Live Updates
- Advertisements and promotions
- Chat messages
- Generic alerts with no active journey
- Upcoming calendar events
- Package tracking that does not require constant monitoring
- Quick shortcuts to app functions
For a shortcut, Google recommends a widget or a custom Quick Settings tile instead. A Live Update is meant to follow an activity, not to provide accelerated access to an app.
Rollout: why the feature was easy to miss
Google’s Android 16 launch announcement on June 10, 2025 said rollout began with supported Pixel devices and that other phone brands would follow later that year. It described compatible rideshare and food-delivery apps as the starting point, and pointed to ecosystem surfaces including Samsung’s Now Bar and the Live Alerts experiences on OPPO and OnePlus devices.

That announcement describes a starting point, not a promise that every Android 16 phone or every delivery app will expose the same card. The consumer benefit arrives only after an app adopts the APIs, the device maker exposes promotion surfaces and the user leaves the relevant permissions enabled. Google has not published a material statistic showing how many people know about Live Updates, how many apps support them or how often they are used, so claims about widespread ignorance or adoption should be treated as editorial judgment rather than measured fact.
How to turn on Live Updates as a phone user
There is no single universal switch with identical wording on every Android 16 device. Use this sequence, and expect OEM labels to differ.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm the Android version. Open your phone’s Settings, choose About phone or System information and check that it reports Android 16. The exact menu name varies by manufacturer.
- Install the current app version. Update the rideshare, delivery, navigation or calling app you want to follow. An older app cannot gain support merely because the operating system was updated.
- Start a real, supported activity. Request a ride, place an order, begin navigation or make a call. A dormant app, saved trip or future event is not an active journey.
- Allow ordinary notifications. In Settings, open Notifications, then App notifications, select the app and make sure notifications are allowed. Also check that the relevant notification channel is not set to minimum importance.
- Look for promotion controls. Depending on the phone maker, notification settings may include a Live Updates, promoted notifications or similar control. Enable it if present. Some devices expose the choice when the first eligible notification arrives.
- Check lock-screen and status-bar visibility. If the drawer card appears but the lock-screen card or chip does not, review those separate notification-visibility settings.
- Do not dismiss the card while testing. Dismissal or demotion is a user signal that can prevent the app from promoting the same journey again.
If the option is missing
Missing controls usually indicate one of three gaps: the app has not implemented Live Updates, the phone maker has not exposed promotion on that model or the notification does not meet the activity and channel requirements. Try a current version of another supported activity, then check the app’s own notification settings. A factory reset, sideloaded system component or unrelated battery tweak cannot add an API the app does not use.

What developers must implement
An app that wants promotion should model the journey as a stateful activity rather than repeatedly posting unrelated alerts.
- Create an ongoing notification with a meaningful content title.
- Use one of the eligible styles: Standard,
BigTextStyle,CallStyle,ProgressStyleorMetricStyle. - For milestone-driven journeys, use
ProgressStylepoints and segments so the visual state reflects actual progress. - Request the non-runtime
POST_PROMOTED_NOTIFICATIONSpermission and submit a promotion request. - Keep the notification marked ongoing for the duration of the activity, then end or remove it when the journey finishes.
- Avoid custom
RemoteViews, grouped summaries, colorization and minimum-importance channels, all of which can disqualify promotion. - Respect dismissal and demotion. Reposting a card that a user dismissed can prompt them to revoke notification-posting permission.
Implementation should also account for compact surfaces. A status chip may have room for only an icon, while the drawer card can carry the fuller milestone description. Testing should cover the lock screen, notification drawer, status bar and any compatible Wear OS bridge separately.
Live Updates versus iPhone Live Activities
Both names describe the same broad user expectation: glanceable progress for something happening now instead of repeatedly opening an app. Android’s implementation is specifically called Live Updates and is built around Android 16 notification templates, promotion permission and OEM-controlled surfaces.
A useful comparison should examine six separate questions rather than assume feature-name parity:
| Comparison axis | Android Live Updates | What you must verify before comparing another platform |
|---|---|---|
| Activity types | Google explicitly cites navigation, calls, rideshare and food delivery, with flight boarding as a transition example. | Do not assume another platform supports the same categories without checking its current documentation. |
| Where it appears | Notification drawer, lock screen, status-bar chip and some connected Wear OS devices. | Surface names and behavior can vary by operating system and device. |
| Developer requirements | Eligible notification style, ongoing flag, content title, promotion request and POST_PROMOTED_NOTIFICATIONS. |
Use the other platform’s current API and permission rules. |
| Device availability | Android 16 is necessary but OEM criteria and exposed surfaces still matter. | Phone model, OS release and vendor skin may change availability. |
| User controls | Users can allow, dismiss or demote an update; repeated reposting is discouraged. | Check the platform’s current dismissal and notification controls. |
| App adoption | Support depends on each app implementing the Android APIs. | Feature branding alone does not prove that a particular app supports it. |
A practical checklist for diagnosing one missing update
- Is the phone actually running Android 16?
- Is the app updated and known to implement Live Updates?
- Did you start an active, user-initiated journey rather than view a future event?
- Are app notifications and the relevant channel enabled?
- Is the channel above minimum importance?
- Has the app been granted permission to post promoted notifications?
- Did you previously dismiss or demote the update?
- Does the device maker support the drawer, lock-screen or status-chip surface you are expecting?
- Are lock-screen privacy settings hiding the card?
The bottom line on Google’s visibility problem
Android 16 Live Updates are a polished answer to a common annoyance: checking the same app again and again for a ride, route, call or delivery. Their limited visibility is built into the rollout model. Android supplies the templates, but apps must adopt them, OEMs must expose them and users must permit promotion. Until all three layers line up, the feature can be excellent and still feel as if nobody told you it existed.
