Short answer: Fossils of the Devonian organism Prototaxites formed columns up to eight meters tall, but calling them “giant fungi” is now a historical shorthand rather than a settled classification. A 2026 study of Prototaxites taiti from the 407-million-year-old Rhynie chert found chemistry and internal architecture unlike known fungi and proposed an entirely extinct eukaryotic lineage. A modern mushroom is something different: a short-lived reproductive fruiting body built by a much larger mycelium, the branching feeding network of a fungus.

The contrast is therefore not simply “huge mushroom versus small mushroom.” It is a comparison between a poorly understood fossil organism and a directly observable fungal life cycle. The fossil’s reproductive structures remain unknown; modern basidiomycete mushrooms make spores on specialized cells called basidia after a defined sequence of nuclear fusion and meiosis.

Were giant mushrooms really eight meters tall?

The eight-meter figure refers to fossil columns assigned to Prototaxites, an organism that lived in the Early Devonian. Those columns were among the largest land structures known from that interval, before large trees had become established. The measurement is real as a fossil height, but it does not show that a mushroom cap, stem and gills once stood eight meters high.

Prototaxites fossils are preserved as cylindrical or columnar bodies with tubes and banded internal textures. Their size and shape led earlier workers to describe them as enormous fungi, and popular accounts often translated that interpretation into “giant mushrooms.” A modern mushroom, however, is a differentiated fruiting structure, usually relatively small and temporary. Nothing in the fossil evidence securely identifies a cap, stem, gills, pores or spines in Prototaxites.

What the height does—and does not—tell us

  • It does tell us: some Early Devonian Prototaxites bodies reached approximately eight meters, according to the Science Advances study reported in 2026.
  • It does not tell us: that the organism was a mushroom, that it had the modern mushroom shape, or that its entire living body was eight meters of exposed tissue.
  • It remains unknown: how much of the organism was above the ground, whether it had an extensive subterranean or substrate-bound body, and how it reproduced.

The safest wording is therefore “Prototaxites fossils reached up to eight meters.” “Eight-meter mushrooms” implies a modern reproductive design that has not been demonstrated.

Was Prototaxites actually a fungus?

Its identity is unsettled. The historical fungal hypothesis was attractive because the fossils contain repeated tubular elements and because fungi can form large bodies without the woody tissues of plants. Yet the interpretation faced problems: the organism was extraordinarily large for the proposed fungal forms, and clearly diagnostic reproductive structures were not found.

The 2026 Science Advances study examined Prototaxites taiti from the 407-million-year-old Rhynie chert using both chemistry and internal anatomy. The tested fossils showed molecular signatures and structural patterns unlike those of known fungal groups. The authors proposed that Prototaxites belonged to an entirely extinct eukaryotic lineage rather than to the fungal kingdom.

This is a classification proposal, not a complete reconstruction of the organism. The study changes the default assumption from “known giant fungus” to “enigmatic extinct eukaryote whose affinities remain under investigation.” It is inappropriate to label Prototaxites definitively as a fungus, mushroom or tree.

Why the evidence is different from modern fungal evidence

Modern fungi can be cultured, sectioned, stained, sequenced and observed while they grow and reproduce. For Prototaxites, scientists must infer biology from mineralized anatomy and preserved chemistry. Fossil tubes may record a biological construction without revealing whether the tubes were hyphae, a related filament system or another kind of tissue. Chemical resemblance or difference can narrow possibilities, but it does not by itself supply a complete life cycle.

Because no securely identified spores, basidia, gills, pores or other reproductive organs are known for Prototaxites, a mushroom-like cycle cannot be filled in by analogy. Any illustration showing a cap or a specific spore-producing surface is a conjectural reconstruction unless it is explicitly presented as such.

What is a modern mushroom compared with a fungus?

A mushroom is the visible fruiting body of certain fungi, not the entire organism. Most of the fungus consists of a mycelium: a branching network of microscopic filaments called hyphae. The mycelium grows through soil, wood, leaf litter, compost or another substrate, secretes enzymes that digest complex material and absorbs the resulting nutrients.

The fruiting body appears when the fungus has the resources and environmental signals needed for sexual reproduction. It packages fertile tissue into a structure that can elevate or expose spore-producing surfaces to air. In a typical mushroom-forming basidiomycete, the cap, stem and fertile surfaces are temporary reproductive architecture; the mycelium is the longer-lived feeding phase.

Mycelium and mushroom: the practical distinction

Feature Mycelium Mushroom (fruiting body)
Where it grows Through soil, wood, compost or another substrate Projects from or organizes within the substrate, often into the air
Main job Digestion, nutrient absorption and continued growth Produces and releases sexual spores
Structure Interwoven hyphae, usually hidden from view Differentiated tissues such as a cap, stem, gills, pores or spines, depending on the species
Duration Can persist and expand after a fruiting body disappears Often short-lived and seasonal
Scale May extend far beyond the visible mushroom Usually much smaller than the total fungal organism

A useful analogy is that the mushroom is the fruiting “flower-like” structure while the mycelium is the body that built it and supplied it. The analogy has limits: fungi are not plants, and their reproductive structures have their own anatomy. The key point is that picking a mushroom removes only the visible fruiting body, not necessarily the mycelium occupying the substrate.

How do mushrooms reproduce?

The clearest model comes from mushroom-forming basidiomycetes. Their life cycle alternates between growth as hyphae and production of basidiospores. The sequence below describes the standard pattern; individual species can modify details, and not every fungus makes a familiar umbrella-shaped mushroom.

  1. Basidiospores disperse. Mature fertile surfaces release microscopic basidiospores. Air currents, water, animals and physical disturbance can move them to a new substrate.
  2. A spore germinates. When moisture, temperature and nutrients are suitable, a basidiospore grows into a haploid hypha. Hyphae branch and form a primary, haploid mycelium.
  3. Compatible mycelia meet. Two compatible haploid mycelia recognize one another and fuse their cytoplasm. This event is plasmogamy. The nuclei do not immediately fuse, so the resulting cells contain two genetically different haploid nuclei.
  4. A dikaryotic mycelium expands. The paired nuclei are maintained in each hyphal compartment, producing a dikaryotic (n+n) mycelium. This stage can feed and grow through the substrate for a substantial period before fruiting.
  5. Environmental cues trigger a fruiting body. Moisture, temperature, light, nutrient status, carbon dioxide and other species-specific signals influence whether the dikaryotic mycelium builds a basidiocarp—the structure people call a mushroom.
  6. Fertile surfaces develop. Gills, pores, spines or another exposed surface is lined with basidia. These microscopic cells are the sites where the sexual nuclei complete their cycle.
  7. Nuclei fuse and meiosis follows. Inside each basidium, the two haploid nuclei undergo karyogamy, briefly producing a diploid nucleus. Meiosis then restores haploid nuclei and generates genetic combinations in the developing spores.
  8. New basidiospores are launched. The basidium forms spores externally, and mechanical forces or surface tension can eject them into the air. Once dispersed, the cycle can begin again.

Where the spores are made

The cap itself is not the spore-producing unit. Its underside may carry gills, or the fertile layer may line pores, spines or a smooth surface. Basidia sit in that fertile layer and bear basidiospores. This is why two mushrooms with very different silhouettes can share the same broad reproductive plan: their visible architecture differs, but the basidium performs the essential nuclear and spore-producing work.

How many spores can a mushroom release?

Scale varies enormously by species and conditions. Penn State Extension reported in 2025 that a three-inch Agaricus bisporus mushroom can release about 40 million spores per hour. That is a measurement for the stated species and mushroom size, not a universal output for every mushroom. Spore production also changes with maturity, humidity, airflow and the condition of the fertile surface.

Ancient columns versus modern fruiting bodies

The most important differences are summarized below. “Not securely known” is a scientific result here, not a missing minor detail: without reproductive evidence, the fossil cannot be assigned a mushroom life cycle.

Comparison Prototaxites fossils Modern mushroom-forming basidiomycetes
Recorded scale Columnar fossils up to about eight meters in the Early Devonian Visible fruiting bodies are usually much smaller and ephemeral; the underlying mycelium can extend far beyond them
Structural evidence Fossilized tubes and bands; biological affinity is disputed Living hyphae form a mycelium and a differentiated basidiocarp with recognizable fertile surfaces
Reproductive organs No securely identified spores, gills, pores, basidia or equivalent system Basidia occur on gills, pores, spines or other fertile surfaces and produce basidiospores
Nuclear sequence Unknown; a mushroom-like dikaryotic stage has not been demonstrated Compatible haploid mycelia fuse, a dikaryotic mycelium develops, then karyogamy and meiosis occur in basidia
Evidence type Interpretation from fossil anatomy and chemistry Direct observation in living cultures and fruiting bodies
Current classification Historically treated as a giant fungus; a 2026 study proposed an extinct eukaryotic lineage outside known fungi Belongs to fungi when its anatomy, genetics and life cycle meet fungal criteria

Why did the giant “fungi” disappear?

There is no established answer because two premises remain uncertain: whether Prototaxites was a fungus at all, and exactly how its lineage lived. Calling its disappearance the extinction of giant fungi would turn a debated classification into a fact.

The fossil record shows that Prototaxites represents an ancient form not present in modern ecosystems, while the 2026 study interprets it as an extinct eukaryotic lineage. That establishes an evolutionary endpoint, not the cause or precise timing of extinction. The available evidence does not securely identify a disease, climate event, predator, competitor or replacement by trees.

What can be said about the Devonian setting

Prototaxites lived before large trees evolved, so its size must be understood in an early terrestrial landscape unlike a modern forest. As vascular plants diversified, the physical structure and chemistry of land habitats changed, but linking those changes directly to the loss of Prototaxites would require evidence not supplied by the fossils described here. It is safer to treat ecological replacement as a hypothesis than as a demonstrated explanation.

How to talk about these organisms accurately

Use precise wording when explaining the comparison:

  • Say “Prototaxites fossils reached up to eight meters,” rather than “mushrooms grew eight meters tall.”
  • Say “historically interpreted as a giant fungus,” then note that the 2026 chemical and anatomical study proposed an extinct lineage outside known fungi.
  • Use “mushroom” for a visible fungal fruiting body and “mycelium” for the hyphal feeding network.
  • Describe basidia and basidiospores for modern basidiomycetes, but do not assign those structures to Prototaxites.
  • When discussing disappearance, distinguish the observed absence of the fossil lineage from an unproven explanation for why it ended.

What the comparison teaches about size and complexity

Large visible size is not a reliable guide to biological identity. A modern fungus can occupy a broad volume through its mycelium while producing a mushroom only briefly. Conversely, a fossil column can be massive without having the tissues, organs or life cycle of a mushroom. Size records the scale of a structure; it does not identify the kingdom that built it.

Architecture is equally important. Modern mushrooms have a recognizable division of labor: hyphae absorb nutrients, while the basidiocarp concentrates reproductive surfaces. Prototaxites preserves tubes and bands, but those patterns have not been matched confidently to fungal hyphae or to any known spore-bearing organ. Chemistry adds another line of evidence, and the 2026 results made the fungal interpretation less secure rather than more so.

Finally, reproduction separates what is observed from what is inferred. In a living mushroom, researchers can watch mycelia fuse, fruiting bodies develop and basidia produce spores. For Prototaxites, the reproductive system remains an open question. Any complete life-cycle diagram for the fossil must therefore be labeled hypothetical, while the basidiomycete cycle can be described from direct biological observation.
