Browserbase and Browserless are the two practical Anchor Browser alternatives to evaluate first. Choose Browserbase when you need hosted, agent-oriented sessions with persistent contexts. Choose Browserless when you need Playwright/Puppeteer-compatible APIs, scraping features, or the option to run browsers in your own Docker environment. For render-and-return jobs such as screenshots and PDFs, ScreenshotNeo is the simpler alternative: it removes consent banners and other widgets before capture and bills only clean shots.
There is no universal winner. Authentication persistence, deployment boundaries, browser time, proxy use, compliance obligations, and the difference between an interactive agent and a one-shot capture determine which service fits.
What Anchor Browser does
Anchor describes its product as a cloud-hosted browser for agents. Its public materials describe managed Chromium instances, authentication infrastructure, SDK and MCP integration, and BYOC or on-premise options for enterprise deployments. Anchor also publishes performance statements such as “12X faster” and “23x less error prone”; those are vendor claims, not independently validated results.
That feature set is aimed at agents that must navigate sites, maintain authenticated state, and complete multi-step tasks. It is a different problem from rendering a URL to a screenshot, generating a PDF, scraping a page, or running a short scripted test. Define that boundary before comparing prices or APIs.
Quick decision guide
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Persistent authenticated agent sessions | Browserbase | Its contexts preserve cookies and client-side storage across sessions, and its platform is positioned around hosted browser sessions and agents. |
| Self-hosting or Docker deployment | Browserless | Browserless documents both a managed service and a self-hosted path. |
| Playwright or Puppeteer compatibility | Browserless | Its product materials foreground compatibility with those automation clients and browser APIs. |
| Scraping, proxies, or CAPTCHA solving | Browserless | Its pricing and product pages explicitly describe proxy traffic, successful CAPTCHA solves, and scraping tools. |
| One-call screenshots or PDFs | ScreenshotNeo | It accepts a URL, removes more than 60 known consent platforms plus newsletter popups and chat widgets, and charges only for clean shots. |
| Enterprise network or residency controls | Validate Anchor BYOC/on-premise, Browserless self-hosting, or a vendor-specific plan | Deployment and contract terms vary by plan; confirm region, retention, isolation, and support commitments during procurement. |
Browserbase: the hosted-session alternative
Where it fits
Browserbase is a strong candidate for teams that want managed browser sessions without operating Chromium infrastructure. Anchor’s comparison identifies its lower entry price for small workloads, Stagehand framework, and persistent contexts as strengths. Contexts retain cookies and client-side storage, which is useful when an agent returns to the same account over several runs.

Authentication caveat
Persistence is not the same as permanent login. Sessions can expire, credentials can be revoked, and a site can force reauthentication. Your automation still needs to detect logout, handle MFA or other challenges allowed by the target site, and establish a recovery path. Do not treat a stored context as a guarantee that an account remains authenticated.
Plans and cost
Browserbase’s pricing page currently shows a free plan, Developer at $20 per month, Startup at $99 per month, and custom Scale pricing. Included browser hours, API calls, concurrency, proxy allowances, and overage rules are plan-specific and can change, so use the live Browserbase pricing page when modeling a purchase. A low subscription price can still be expensive if your workflow consumes substantial browser time or proxy traffic.
Integration questions to ask
- Can your existing Playwright code connect with minimal changes?
- Do you need Stagehand, or would a lower-level browser API be easier to control?
- How will you rotate credentials and recover an expired context?
- Which data region, retention period, and isolation terms apply to your plan?
Browserless: managed or self-hosted browser infrastructure
Where it fits
Browserless offers managed browser automation and a self-hosted Docker deployment. Its official product page emphasizes browser APIs, Playwright and Puppeteer compatibility, persistent profiles, and scraping capabilities. That combination is attractive when your team wants direct control of the runtime or needs browser-oriented services beyond agent navigation.
Understand the unit meter
On the Browserless pricing page, one unit represents up to 30 seconds of browser connection time. A longer session consumes another unit every 30 seconds, and reconnecting counts as a new connection. The page also lists separate unit consumption for residential-proxy traffic, datacenter-proxy traffic, and successful CAPTCHA solves. Those meters are not directly equivalent to Browserbase browser hours or an agent platform’s task credits.

Published plans
The annual-billing table on the pricing page lists Free at $0, Prototyping at $25 per month, Starter at $140 per month, and Scale at $350 per month, with different included unit allotments. Treat these as the values shown at the time of evaluation; pricing and quotas are live and may change. Build a worksheet from your expected connection duration, reconnect rate, proxy mix, CAPTCHA volume, and concurrency rather than comparing headline prices.
When self-hosting is worth the work
- Use self-hosting when traffic must stay inside a controlled network boundary or you need to tune infrastructure yourself.
- Prefer the managed service when your team does not want to patch browser images, scale workers, monitor crashes, or maintain secure egress.
- Confirm which features, support levels, and commercial terms apply to the self-hosted edition before assuming parity with the cloud service.
Anchor versus the alternatives by workload
| Workload | Anchor Browser | Browserbase | Browserless |
|---|---|---|---|
| Agent interaction across authenticated sites | Cloud-hosted agent browser with authentication infrastructure, SDK, and MCP integration. | Hosted sessions, persistent contexts, and Stagehand-oriented tooling. | Possible through browser APIs and automation clients; agent-specific workflow fit requires validation. |
| Scripted tests | Managed Chromium can reduce infrastructure work. | Hosted browser sessions and concurrency controls are relevant. | Playwright/Puppeteer compatibility and managed or self-hosted execution are central. |
| Scraping and extraction | Evaluate against your target sites and policy requirements. | Evaluate APIs, proxy needs, and session behavior for your crawler. | Scraping features, proxies, and CAPTCHA-related metering are explicitly documented. |
| Screenshots and PDFs | Possible, but an agent browser may be more machinery than a one-shot render needs. | Possible through a browser session, with session costs to model. | Browser APIs can render outputs, with connection units consumed. |
| Deployment boundary | Managed-first, with BYOC/on-premise options described for enterprise. | Public plan pages describe a hosted offering. | Managed cloud plus documented self-hosting. |
Reliability: what the published benchmark does and does not show
Anchor’s comparison reports a vendor-run test on August 22, 2025. Using standard Playwright Chromium sessions, no proxies or stealth features, and a 30-second timeout, Anchor loaded 93 of 100 selected high-traffic US sites; Browserbase loaded 71. Success required a valid HTTP response and a page title. The comparison notes that some failed sites loaded in interactive playgrounds and that neither platform was perfectly reliable.
This is narrow evidence, not a general reliability ranking. Results can change with geography, browser version, proxy configuration, bot defenses, authentication, timeout, and the exact sites you target. Reproduce a representative sample of your own URLs, record first-load and retry outcomes, and include the failure modes that matter: blank pages, challenge screens, expired sessions, navigation timeouts, and partial renders. See the benchmark description and limitations before drawing a conclusion.

Vendor pages are useful starting points, not substitutes for procurement evidence. Anchor’s comparison says its security discussion is based on published vendor pages and distinguishes missing public documentation from proof that a control is unavailable. Apply the same standard to every provider.

- Define the data path. List URLs, page content, credentials, cookies, screenshots, logs, and webhook payloads that leave your network.
- Confirm geography. Ask which regions are available on the exact plan and whether processing, backups, and support access follow that region.
- Check retention and deletion. Get written terms for browser profiles, recordings, logs, artifacts, and failed-job data.
- Review isolation. Confirm how sessions, containers, profiles, and customer data are separated.
- Map compliance evidence. Request the applicable reports, subprocessors, incident process, and contract commitments rather than relying on a marketing badge.
- Test egress controls. Verify fixed IP, proxy, private networking, or BYOC requirements with a real staging workflow.
How to compare total cost
Make the unit of analysis one completed business task, not one browser connection. For each provider, estimate:
- Average browser connection seconds and the number of reconnects.
- Concurrent sessions and peak-hour capacity.
- API calls, agent tasks, or browser hours included in the plan.
- Proxy traffic by residential and datacenter type.
- Successful CAPTCHA solves, if applicable.
- Retries caused by timeouts, challenge pages, or expired authentication.
- Engineering and operational cost for self-hosting, patching, observability, and incident response.
Browserless’s 30-second units, Browserbase’s plan allowances, and Anchor’s separately metered resources measure different things. Normalize them to cost per successful task using a week of representative traffic, then rerun the model for peak usage and a higher retry rate.
ScreenshotNeo: the alternative for clean screenshots and PDFs
When the requirement is “give me an image or PDF of this URL,” an agent browser can be unnecessary. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. It accepts one GET request and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →It is the first service to try for screenshot API work because it handles the cleanup step before capture: it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers report the page verdict and whether the request was billed.
One-call examples
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options. Replace the URL and key with your values:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Options for production captures
- Full-page capture with lazy images loaded, or one element selected by CSS selector.
- Dark mode, 12 device presets, arbitrary viewport sizes, and retina scale.
- PDF paper size, margins, landscape mode, and page ranges.
- Custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, and waits for a selector, delay, or network idle.
- Ad, tracker, request, and resource-type blocking.
- Custom headers, cookies, user agent, Authorization, timezone, and geolocation.
- Transparent backgrounds, image resizing, chosen cache TTL, signed links for public image tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification.
ScreenshotNeo supports the parameter names used by other screenshot APIs, which can reduce migration work. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Troubleshooting and evaluation traps
“The login worked once, then failed.”
Cookies or client-side storage may have expired, the site may have invalidated the session, or an MFA challenge may require a new flow. Add explicit logout detection, secure credential rotation, and a reauthentication path; do not rely only on a persistent profile.
“The service is cheap, but our bill is high.”
Measure connection duration, reconnects, retries, proxy traffic, and CAPTCHA solves. In Browserless, each can add units; in Browserbase, included quotas and overages depend on the plan. Recalculate cost per successful task.
“A page passes in a playground but fails in production.”
Compare geography, browser version, headers, timeout, proxy, authentication state, and bot defenses. A benchmark using US sites and no proxies cannot predict every target. Capture diagnostic headers, page titles, HTTP status, and failure screenshots where policy permits.
“Self-hosting became an operations project.”
Account for browser image updates, sandboxing, queueing, autoscaling, crash recovery, patching, egress controls, and monitoring. If those tasks outweigh the network-boundary benefit, compare the managed plans again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute“The screenshot contains a consent banner or chat bubble.”
Use a capture service that performs cleanup before rendering, or add deterministic hide selectors and waits to your browser script. ScreenshotNeo’s cleanup steps can be enabled or disabled individually, and failed or blank captures are not billed.
A practical evaluation plan
- Write three representative workflows: an authenticated agent task, a scripted test or scrape, and a render-only screenshot/PDF job.
- Run each across the same URLs, regions, browser settings, timeout, and retry policy.
- Record successful completion, useful output, authentication recovery, latency, concurrency, and every billable event.
- Test a failure set containing bot checks, blank responses, slow pages, lazy-loaded images, and expired sessions.
- Score deployment fit, security evidence, integration effort, and cost per successful task.
- Ask each vendor to confirm the plan, region, retention, support, and overage terms in writing before production.
FAQ
Is Browserbase cheaper than Anchor Browser?
Browserbase publishes a free tier and paid plans beginning at $20 per month, but Anchor and Browserbase meter different resources. Compare your actual browser time, calls, concurrency, and retries rather than subscription prices alone.
Can Browserless replace an agent platform?
It can provide browser APIs and automation infrastructure, but whether it replaces an agent-focused platform depends on your orchestration, authentication, and recovery code. Test the complete agent workflow, not only page navigation.
Does a self-hosted browser automatically satisfy compliance?
No. It can improve network and data-boundary control, but you still need evidence for access control, retention, patching, isolation, incident response, and contracts.
When should I use ScreenshotNeo instead of Browserbase or Browserless?
Use ScreenshotNeo when the deliverable is a screenshot, PDF, page-info result, or batch of captures and you do not need a long-lived interactive browser session.
