MVC stands for Model-View-Controller, a pattern for separating an application’s data and business behavior, presentation, and request handling. In a web app, a browser request is routed to a controller action; that action works with application data or services and returns a response, often an HTML view. The pattern gives developers clear places to put different responsibilities, but it does not enforce good design by itself.

What is MVC architecture?

MVC is a way to organize software around three broad responsibilities: the Model represents application state and behavior, the View presents information, and the Controller handles user interaction or a request and coordinates what happens next. The separation is intended to make complex applications easier to develop, debug, and test by keeping concerns distinct. It is a design pattern, not a requirement that every framework use the same class names, folders, or internal mechanics.

In a web application, MVC commonly connects an incoming HTTP request to application work and then to a response. The framework supplies the concrete conventions and features; MVC itself does not prescribe every detail of routing, rendering, or persistence.

What do Model, View, and Controller do?

Model: application state and behavior

The Model represents concepts and state the application works with, along with relevant business rules or operations. In a movie catalog, a movie and the rules for handling its information are part of the application’s model. A model may interact with persistence, but it is not automatically a database table or database context. Those are implementation choices, not the definition of the Model.

View: presentation

The View determines how information is presented to a user. In ASP.NET Core MVC, a View commonly uses a Razor template to produce HTML from data supplied for display. Presentation decisions belong here rather than in request-coordination code.

Controller: request coordination

The Controller handles an interaction or HTTP request, interprets its inputs, calls the appropriate model or supporting service, and selects a response. A controller often returns a View for a browser page, but it can return a different result when the request calls for it. It should coordinate application work, not become the home for every business rule, database operation, and presentation decision.

Microsoft’s ASP.NET Core MVC overview describes the Model as independent of the View and Controller, while the View and Controller can depend on model data. That dependency direction supports separation: presentation can change without owning business behavior, and request handling can change without taking over the Model’s role.

How does MVC handle a web request?

Consider a visitor opening a movie-details page. The following is an illustrative ASP.NET Core MVC-style flow; other MVC frameworks may implement particular steps differently.

  1. The browser makes a request. It asks for a URL representing a specific movie, such as a details page.
  2. Routing selects an action. Framework routing rules match the URL and request to a controller action. ASP.NET Core MVC documents routing, model binding, and validation among its framework features in the overview.
  3. The action interprets input and delegates work. The controller action receives route values and request data, checks that the input has the expected shape and validity, then asks a model or application service to retrieve the movie or carry out the requested operation.
  4. The controller chooses a result. For a page request, it can supply display data to a View. For an API request, it may return another response format instead. Controllers and action results are described in the ASP.NET controllers and actions documentation.
  5. The View renders the page. If the result uses a View, its template turns the supplied data into presentation markup. The framework sends the resulting HTTP response to the browser.

This flow shows why routing, input handling, application behavior, and rendering are related but distinct responsibilities. It also helps locate a problem: a wrong URL match points toward routing, incorrect business outcomes toward model or service behavior, and a display defect toward the View.

What MVC helps with—and what it does not

Separating responsibilities can make components easier to change and test independently. For example, a presentation change can often be made in a View without moving business rules, while request handling can remain focused on coordinating inputs and results. Microsoft presents separation of concerns as a way to manage complexity and make parts easier to code, debug, and test; these are intended benefits, not a guarantee of faster development or better software.

MVC does not automatically prevent tangled dependencies. A controller that accumulates business decisions and data-access work is still poorly separated, and a View that contains substantial business logic blurs its presentation role. Keep request and input coordination in controllers, presentation choices in views, and business decisions in the model or domain services.

Nor does the pattern establish that MVC is superior to every other architecture. Whether it fits depends on the application’s needs and the conventions and tools supplied by the chosen framework.

MVC as a pattern versus ASP.NET Core MVC

MVC names a general division of responsibilities. ASP.NET Core MVC is a specific Microsoft framework for web applications and APIs that uses that pattern. Its documented capabilities include routing, model binding and validation, dependency injection, filters, areas, API responses, and Razor Views. These are framework features, not mandatory parts of the minimal MVC definition.

The Microsoft overview linked above is for ASP.NET Core 8.0, so its version-specific details should be checked against the documentation for the version being used. The conceptual roles are more general than that framework version. For a movie-based explanation of the component roles, see the ASP.NET tutorial on adding a controller.

How to apply MVC in a small web feature

When adding a feature such as a movie-details page, decide where each responsibility belongs before adding code:

  • Define the application concept: identify the movie data and the rules or operations the application needs.
  • Keep the action focused: have the controller action accept the request, coordinate validation and application work, then choose the result.
  • Build the presentation separately: use a View for page markup and display decisions rather than putting business rules there.
  • Check the request path: confirm that routing reaches the expected action and that the action returns the intended view or other response.

This is a useful way to learn the pattern in a real framework, but the exact project setup and code depend on the framework version and application structure.
