Microsoft is the better risk-adjusted AI buy on the evidence available today. Azure growth, Microsoft 365 Copilot adoption and distribution through enterprise software give Microsoft several visible ways to turn AI spending into revenue. Amazon is the more aggressive upside choice: AWS has a rapidly growing AI run rate, custom chips, a broad model marketplace and major OpenAI commitments. That opportunity also carries heavier capital requirements, capacity risk and greater sensitivity to a few frontier-model partners.

This is a comparative analysis, not individualized investment advice. The decision still depends on your valuation, time horizon and tolerance for execution risk; the supplied evidence does not include current share prices, forward multiples or analyst-consensus estimates.

The short answer: Microsoft for balance, Amazon for maximum AWS upside

Microsoft’s AI case is easier to underwrite because monetization is spread across Azure, Microsoft 365, Copilot, GitHub and business applications. In fiscal 2026 fourth-quarter reporting, Microsoft Cloud revenue reached $59.3 billion, up 27% year over year; Azure revenue passed $100 billion for the first time; and Microsoft 365 Copilot exceeded 30 million paid seats. Those figures do not isolate AI profit, but they show a large installed base already paying for cloud and productivity products in which AI features are embedded.

Amazon’s case is more infrastructure-led. AWS AI revenue run rate exceeded $15 billion in the first quarter of 2026, while Amazon’s chip business reached a run rate above $20 billion. Bedrock offers more than 20 managed models, and Trainium, Graviton, Nova and AgentCore extend the platform beyond a single model provider. Amazon is also committing tens of billions of dollars to OpenAI and Anthropic and reserving approximately two gigawatts of Trainium capacity for OpenAI workloads. If demand for model training and inference continues to compound, that infrastructure exposure could produce greater upside than Microsoft’s more diversified profile.

The trade-off is spending and concentration. Amazon’s chief executive described approximately $200 billion of 2026 capital expenditure, and Amazon reported $96.3 billion of first-half cash capex in its second-quarter filing. Microsoft expects roughly $190 billion of 2026 capex and says capacity remains constrained through 2026. Neither company reports a clean standalone AI margin, so investors must judge whether these investments earn acceptable returns inside broader cloud segments.

What the latest operating figures actually show

Measure Microsoft Amazon Investor interpretation
Cloud growth or AI scale Azure and other cloud services revenue grew 40% in Q3 FY2026. Microsoft Cloud revenue was $54.5 billion in that quarter and $59.3 billion in Q4 FY2026, up 27% year over year. AWS AI revenue run rate exceeded $15 billion in Q1 2026; the figure is a run-rate measure rather than quarterly recognized revenue. Microsoft provides clearer reported cloud momentum; Amazon provides a substantial but less directly comparable AI run-rate disclosure.
AI distribution Microsoft 365 Copilot paid seats exceeded 20 million in Q3 FY2026 and 30 million in Q4 FY2026. Azure, Microsoft 365, GitHub and enterprise contracts provide multiple routes to adoption. AWS, Bedrock, custom chips, Nova, AgentCore and partner models target developers and enterprises that want infrastructure and model choice. Microsoft has broader workflow distribution; Amazon is more infrastructure- and platform-centered.
Capital expenditure Microsoft expects roughly $190 billion of 2026 capex and says capacity should remain constrained through 2026. Amazon’s chief executive described about $200 billion of 2026 capex; first-half cash capex was $96.3 billion through the Q2 2026 filing. Both need sustained spending. Amazon’s AWS thesis is particularly dependent on converting that spend into utilization and pricing power.
Model and partner exposure Long-standing OpenAI exposure; Microsoft disclosed a $3.2 billion Anthropic investment gain in FY2026 Q4. $28.7 billion invested in OpenAI by June 30, a further $21.3 billion funded after quarter-end, and $10 billion invested in Anthropic in Q2. Amazon and OpenAI also announced a $50 billion Amazon investment and approximately two gigawatts of Trainium capacity for OpenAI workloads. Partners can accelerate demand but can also make results more sensitive to a small number of model companies.
Reported segment margin context Intelligent Cloud margin was about 41% in the cited analysis; it includes non-AI workloads. AWS margin was about 39% in the cited analysis; it also includes non-AI workloads. Neither percentage is a standalone AI margin or a direct measure of AI return on invested capital.

Why Microsoft has the stronger risk-adjusted AI story

Azure is growing while AI is distributed across a large software estate

Azure and other cloud services grew 40% in Microsoft’s third quarter of fiscal 2026. In the following quarter, Microsoft Cloud revenue reached $59.3 billion, a 27% year-over-year increase. Microsoft also said Azure revenue surpassed $100 billion for the first time. These figures combine conventional cloud consumption with AI workloads, so they should not be read as pure AI revenue. They do show that AI demand is arriving inside an already scaled cloud business rather than having to create an entirely new distribution channel.

Microsoft can monetize the same customer relationship in several ways: compute and storage through Azure; model and application services through Azure AI; productivity subscriptions through Microsoft 365 Copilot; coding assistance through GitHub; and workflow software in its business applications. A customer that starts with a Copilot deployment can increase Azure usage, add security or data services and standardize on Microsoft’s enterprise controls. That cross-selling potential reduces dependence on any single product launch.

Copilot provides a visible paid-adoption signal

Paid Microsoft 365 Copilot seats exceeded 20 million in Q3 FY2026 and 30 million in Q4 FY2026. Seat counts do not reveal price realization, usage intensity, retention or profit, but they are a more concrete commercial signal than a statement that customers are merely experimenting. The increase also gives investors a way to track whether AI is moving from pilot projects into recurring software budgets.

Copilot adoption is not risk-free. Customers may limit seats, negotiate discounts or discover that usage does not justify renewal. Microsoft’s advantage is that Copilot is attached to familiar applications and identity, security and compliance systems. That integration can lower deployment friction compared with a standalone AI tool, especially for large organizations that already standardize on Microsoft software.

Microsoft’s partner exposure is material but not the whole thesis

Microsoft has long-standing OpenAI exposure and disclosed a $3.2 billion Anthropic investment gain in fiscal 2026’s fourth quarter. Model partners can increase Azure demand and improve the attractiveness of Microsoft’s AI services. At the same time, partner economics, model quality and competitive relationships can change. Microsoft’s broader distribution means a partner setback would matter, but it would not erase the Azure, Copilot, GitHub and business-application channels that support the investment case.

Why Amazon could deliver more upside

AWS AI revenue is scaling from a large infrastructure base

Amazon’s chief executive reported that AWS AI revenue run rate exceeded $15 billion in Q1 2026 and described it as nearly 260 times AWS’s run rate at the same point in the prior AI wave. A run rate annualizes the latest pace; it is not the same as revenue recognized for the quarter, and it can rise or fall quickly as large customers add or remove capacity. Even with that qualification, the figure indicates that AI has become a meaningful AWS growth engine rather than a niche feature.

AWS benefits when customers train models, fine-tune them, run inference, store data and connect AI applications to databases and business systems. Those workloads can consume substantial compute and networking resources. Amazon also supplies the underlying chips, which gives it an opportunity to capture value from both cloud usage and silicon demand.

Custom silicon could improve AWS economics

Amazon reported a chips-business run rate above $20 billion. Trainium targets AI training and inference, while Graviton serves general-purpose cloud workloads. Custom silicon can reduce reliance on merchant GPU supply and allow AWS to tune performance, networking and cost for its own services. The benefit is not guaranteed: chip design requires large up-front investment, software compatibility must improve, and customers may still prefer widely supported accelerators for some workloads.

Amazon’s chief executive said the company was not investing approximately $200 billion of 2026 capex “on a hunch” and that a substantial portion was backed by customer commitments. Commitments help reduce demand uncertainty, but they do not eliminate utilization, pricing or execution risk. Investors should watch whether committed capacity converts into durable revenue and acceptable margins after depreciation and power costs.

Bedrock’s model choice broadens the addressable market

Bedrock lists more than 20 managed models, and Amazon is expanding its own Nova family alongside AgentCore and Trainium. This multi-model approach appeals to companies that want to compare quality, latency, cost and data-handling terms instead of locking into one provider. It also lets AWS remain useful when model leadership changes.

Choice can make the platform harder to explain and monetize. If models become interchangeable, pricing pressure could move value toward compute, data and application layers rather than the model catalog itself. Amazon’s investment case therefore depends on maintaining developer preference, reliable tooling and competitive infrastructure economics, not merely listing many models.

OpenAI commitments create a powerful demand catalyst—and concentration

Amazon’s Q2 2026 filing reported $28.7 billion invested in OpenAI by June 30, another $21.3 billion funded after quarter-end and $10 billion invested in Anthropic during Q2. Amazon and OpenAI separately announced a $50 billion Amazon investment, exclusive third-party AWS distribution for OpenAI Frontier and approximately two gigawatts of Trainium capacity for OpenAI workloads.

These arrangements can anchor substantial AWS demand and validate Trainium at scale. They also tie part of the thesis to the capital needs, product trajectory and purchasing decisions of a small number of frontier-model companies. If a partner changes its infrastructure strategy, develops more of its own capacity or encounters slower adoption, AWS could face a demand gap after committing capital.

Capital intensity, capacity and the path to returns

Both companies are in an infrastructure buildout that is unusually large even for hyperscalers. Microsoft expects roughly $190 billion of 2026 capex and says it will remain capacity-constrained through 2026. Amazon’s chief executive described approximately $200 billion of 2026 capex, while Amazon’s Q2 filing showed $96.3 billion of cash capex in the first half alone.

Capacity constraints can be positive and negative at the same time. Limited supply indicates that customer demand is real and may support strong pricing. It can also delay deployments, push customers toward competitors and prevent revenue from keeping pace with depreciation. The key question is not which company spends more in absolute dollars; it is whether each dollar produces enough incremental, durable revenue and cash flow.

Management commentary about customer commitments is useful but not equivalent to guaranteed profit. Commitments may have conditions, ramp schedules or negotiated pricing. Investors should compare booked demand with delivered capacity, revenue growth, gross margin, depreciation and free cash flow over several reporting periods.

Why reported margins cannot answer “which company is more profitable in AI?”

Neither Microsoft nor Amazon discloses a clean standalone AI profit figure. AI revenue and costs are embedded in broader cloud segments that include databases, storage, networking, enterprise applications and conventional compute. The cited comparison put Intelligent Cloud margin at about 41% and AWS margin at about 39%, but those are segment-level figures, not AI margins.

AI can initially dilute margins because accelerators, data centers, power contracts and networking are purchased before utilization reaches mature levels. Margins can improve as utilization rises, software layers add revenue and custom silicon lowers unit cost. They can also deteriorate if model prices fall faster than infrastructure costs or if customers shift workloads among clouds. Treat segment margins as context for financial capacity, not proof that one company has already achieved superior AI economics.

Accounting and investment-valuation cautions

Amazon’s net income can include investment remeasurement

Amazon’s Q2 2026 other income included large valuation gains tied primarily to Anthropic. Those gains can raise reported net income without representing operating AI profit or cash generated by AWS. When reviewing Amazon, separate operating performance from changes in the carrying value of strategic investments. A higher quarterly net-income figure is not, by itself, evidence that AWS AI spending is earning a higher return.

Do not infer a buy from growth without a current valuation

The available evidence does not include current share prices, forward earnings multiples, free-cash-flow yields or analyst-consensus estimates. A company can have the stronger business and still be the weaker stock purchase if the market price already discounts years of success. Before buying either stock, check the latest price, valuation relative to growth, dilution, debt, free cash flow and management’s updated capex guidance.

Which stock fits which investor?

Choose Microsoft if you want diversified enterprise monetization

  • You prefer AI exposure spread across cloud infrastructure, productivity subscriptions, developer tools and business applications.
  • You value visible paid-seat adoption, with Microsoft 365 Copilot above 30 million seats in Q4 FY2026.
  • You want a thesis that is less dependent on one model provider or one infrastructure product.
  • You can accept capacity constraints and approximately $190 billion of expected 2026 capex while waiting for returns to mature.

Choose Amazon if you want infrastructure-led upside

  • You specifically want AWS growth from training, inference, data services and model distribution.
  • You believe Trainium and other custom silicon can improve cost and supply control over time.
  • You favor a multi-model platform through Bedrock and are comfortable with exposure to OpenAI and Anthropic.
  • You can tolerate approximately $200 billion of 2026 capex and greater sensitivity to utilization, power and capacity execution.

Consider a split exposure only if the risks are understood

Holding both companies can reduce the chance that a single cloud architecture, partner relationship or product strategy determines the outcome. It does not remove the shared risks: both are spending roughly $190 billion to $200 billion on 2026 capex, both face accelerator and power constraints, and neither provides a pure AI-profit disclosure. A split also requires deciding whether the two positions complement each other or simply duplicate expensive hyperscaler exposure.

Risks that could change the ranking

  • Capex returns: If AI utilization or pricing disappoints, depreciation and power costs could pressure cash flow at both companies.
  • Supply and capacity: Microsoft expects constraints through 2026; shortages, delays or excess capacity could alter growth and margins.
  • Partner concentration: Amazon’s OpenAI and Anthropic commitments are large, while Microsoft also has material partner exposure. A partner’s strategy or financial health can affect demand.
  • Model commoditization: Faster, cheaper models could increase usage while reducing the price AWS or Azure can charge for each unit of inference.
  • Customer experimentation: Copilot seats or cloud commitments may not translate into sustained, high-frequency usage.
  • Accounting noise: Investment remeasurement, particularly at Amazon, can obscure underlying operating trends.
  • Valuation: Without current market data, it is impossible to say which stock offers the better risk-adjusted return at today’s exact price.

A practical monitoring checklist before buying

  1. Check the latest Azure and AWS growth rates, distinguishing reported revenue from run-rate disclosures.
  2. Track Microsoft 365 Copilot paid seats, renewal behavior and usage commentary rather than seats alone.
  3. For Amazon, compare AWS AI run-rate growth with Trainium and other chip revenue, customer commitments and delivered capacity.
  4. Review each company’s capex guidance, cash flow, depreciation and data-center capacity commentary.
  5. Read partner disclosures for changes in OpenAI or Anthropic funding, distribution rights and workload commitments.
  6. Adjust reported margins for the fact that Intelligent Cloud and AWS include substantial non-AI services.
  7. Use a current valuation measure before assigning a buy rating; operating momentum alone does not establish expected stock returns.

Bottom line for an AI-focused stock decision

Microsoft is the default choice for an investor who wants the more diversified and currently visible enterprise-AI monetization story. Azure’s 40% Q3 FY2026 growth, Microsoft Cloud’s $59.3 billion Q4 revenue and Copilot’s more than 30 million paid seats provide several measurable adoption signals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Amazon is the higher-upside, higher-execution-risk alternative. AWS AI revenue above a $15 billion Q1 2026 run rate, a chips run rate above $20 billion, Bedrock’s broad model catalog and the OpenAI capacity agreement could drive exceptional growth if demand and utilization keep accelerating. The price of that opportunity is roughly $200 billion of planned 2026 capex, substantial partner concentration and less clarity about standalone AI profitability.

Recheck valuation, cloud growth, capex returns, capacity availability and partner commitments whenever either company reports. Those variables—not a single headline AI metric—will determine whether Microsoft’s balance or Amazon’s upside is the better buy at the price you actually pay.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
