Amazon.com, Inc. trades on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker symbol AMZN. The regular U.S. stock-market session is 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time on weekdays, with pre-market and after-hours sessions also listed by Nasdaq. You may be able to buy less than one AMZN share through a brokerage that offers fractional investing, but eligibility, minimums, order types, execution, and transfer rules vary by firm.

Amazon.com, Inc.’s common stock trades under the symbol AMZN on the Nasdaq Global Select Market. Amazon states this in its 2025 annual report. If you are looking up the company in a brokerage app or another market-data service, AMZN is the identifier to search.

A ticker is a short symbol used to identify a publicly traded security. It is not an Amazon shopping-account name, a product, or a gift card. Buying an item from Amazon or holding an Amazon gift card does not give you ownership of AMZN stock. Stock ownership is recorded through an investment account or another formal purchase arrangement.

Amazon’s ticker remained AMZN after the company’s 2022 stock split. The split changed the number of shares into which existing holdings were divided; it did not create a new ticker.
Is Amazon stock on Nasdaq?
Yes. Amazon identifies its common stock as listed on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under AMZN. That exchange listing is distinct from the brokerage through which an investor places an order: a broker provides access to the market, while Nasdaq is the listing and trading venue.
When checking a quote or submitting an order, confirm that the result refers to Amazon.com, Inc. common stock and the symbol AMZN. A similarly named fund, derivative, or other financial product is not necessarily the company’s common stock. This guide concerns only the U.S.-listed common stock, not securities or trading arrangements in other countries.

During an ordinary Nasdaq trading day, the regular session runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday. The schedule is subject to market holidays and early closes. These are exchange hours; they do not guarantee that every brokerage accepts every order throughout the session.
Use Eastern Time rather than a fixed UTC offset when planning around the schedule. The difference between Eastern Time and UTC changes with daylight saving time, so a UTC conversion that is correct in one season may be wrong in another. Your broker’s displayed time zone may also differ from the exchange’s.
Nasdaq’s 2026 holiday schedule provides concrete examples: the market is closed on Thursday, November 26, for Thanksgiving, and closes early at 1:00 p.m. ET on Friday, November 27. Check the exchange calendar and your broker’s order-entry screen for the date you intend to trade; a normal weekday clock time does not override an exchange holiday or early close.

Can I trade AMZN before or after regular market hours?
Nasdaq lists a pre-market session from 4:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. ET and an after-hours session from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET. Access depends on the brokerage: firms may restrict extended-hours trading or provide different windows. Nasdaq notes, “Certain brokers have different pre-market and after hours trading times.”
Extended sessions are not simply the same market with a different clock. Nasdaq warns that thinner liquidity and faster price moves can result in inferior prices. Fewer available buyers or sellers can make it harder to complete an order at a desired price, and a quoted price may not represent a price at which a substantial order can be filled. Nasdaq’s schedule and trading-hours information advises investors considering those periods to use limit orders. A limit order sets a maximum purchase price or minimum sale price, but it may not execute at all if the market does not reach that price.
Before placing an extended-hours order, check the specific AMZN trading window, permitted order types, time-in-force choices, and any restrictions shown by your broker. Do not assume that an order entered outside the regular session will execute immediately, carry over in the way you expect, or receive the same access to buyers and sellers as an order during regular hours.
Are overnight AMZN trading hours available?
As of the research cutoff for this guide, October 30, 2026, Nasdaq described a proposed additional session from 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. ET, with a target date of December 6, 2026. Nasdaq’s description makes the expansion conditional on market-system readiness and applicable regulatory changes; it is a future proposal, not a guarantee that the session will be in operation or available through a particular broker.
For the current schedule, consult Nasdaq’s description of global and U.S. trading sessions and your brokerage’s own trading-hours page. Even if an exchange adds a session, broker access may vary. Do not treat a proposed start date as confirmation that your account can place an overnight AMZN order.
Can I buy a fraction of an Amazon share?
Possibly. A fractional share is an ownership interest representing less than one whole share. A brokerage that supports fractional investing in eligible stocks may let a customer enter either a dollar amount or a fraction of a share. That does not mean every brokerage offers fractional AMZN purchases, or that a particular account can use every order type or trading session.

For example, the SEC’s investor bulletin uses a hypothetical stock priced at $1,000 and an investment of $100 to illustrate a 0.1-share purchase. That is a calculation, not a statement of Amazon’s share price, a current market statistic, or a claim about the minimum investment at any brokerage. The amount required for an AMZN fractional purchase depends on the share price, the broker’s rules, and any minimum or fee that applies.
Before relying on fractional investing, ask the brokerage or check its current account disclosures for each of these details:
- AMZN eligibility: Is Amazon common stock included in that firm’s fractional-share program?
- Order entry: Can you specify a dollar amount, a share fraction, or both?
- Minimum and fees: Is there a minimum order amount, commission, transaction fee, or other charge?
- Order types and execution: Which orders are accepted, when are they executed, and are orders executed promptly or aggregated?
- Trading window: Can a fractional order be submitted only during regular hours, or also in an extended session?
- Rights: What voting or proxy arrangements apply to a fractional holding?
- Transfers: What happens to the fractional portion if you move your account to another brokerage?
These are not minor administrative details. Two brokerages may both advertise fractional investing but handle order timing, eligible securities, voting arrangements, or transfers differently. The SEC Office of Investor Education and Advocacy’s fractional-share bulletin explains that some firms execute orders promptly while others aggregate them, which can affect the price received. Read the firm’s explanation of its process rather than assuming every dollar-based order is handled identically.

Only if the brokerage you use accepts an AMZN fractional order at that amount and the order meets its current minimums and other rules. “$10 worth” is a useful way to describe the question, but it is not a verified minimum or a promise that any broker will accept the order.
If fractional dollar orders are available, the number of shares represented by a fixed dollar amount depends on the price used to calculate or execute the order. A $10 order therefore does not correspond to a fixed fraction in every market condition. Fees, if any, can also affect how much of the amount is invested. Check the order preview for the estimated fraction, price treatment, and costs before submitting.
If a firm supports only whole-share orders for AMZN, a purchase would require enough funds for at least one share plus any applicable charges. The exact amount changes with the market price, and no live share price is quoted here.

What rights and transfer limits apply to fractional shares?
Fractional ownership does not always carry the same practical arrangements as a whole share. A brokerage may use different procedures for proxy voting, so do not assume that a fractional holding has identical voting rights or that you will receive a vote on the same basis as a whole-share holder. Ask the firm how it handles proxy materials and voting for fractions.

Moving an account can create another limitation. The SEC says, “You generally cannot transfer fractional shares to another brokerage firm.” If a customer changes brokers, the firm may require the fractional portion to be sold rather than transferred directly. That can affect the timing of a sale and may have tax consequences depending on the account and the customer’s circumstances; ask both firms how a transfer is handled before initiating one.
These conditions are brokerage-specific and may also depend on account type. The SEC bulletin is a useful overview, but the account agreement and current disclosures from the firm holding the shares govern the practical process. Confirm the rules before placing an order if you expect to transfer the holding later.
Did Amazon split its stock, and is AMZN still the ticker?
Amazon completed a 20-for-1 stock split effective June 3, 2022. In a contemporaneous filing, the company expected split-adjusted trading to begin on June 6, 2022. Those dates refer to different events: June 3 was the effective date, while June 6 was the expected first day of trading on the adjusted basis. Amazon’s investor-relations FAQ describes the split, and the ticker remains AMZN.
A split changes the share count and per-share basis of an existing position according to the split ratio; the 20-for-1 event should not be mistaken for a new listing or a current market event. Historical references to the split also do not tell you the current share price. Use a current quote source if you need a live market price, and distinguish it from the split history.
Can I buy AMZN directly from Amazon?
Amazon’s investor FAQ says the company has offered a direct stock purchase plan since August 2019 and refers readers to Computershare. That establishes the existence of a company-referenced purchase route, but it does not by itself establish the plan’s current minimum, fees, fractional-purchase availability, or other present terms.

For current plan details, follow Amazon’s investor-relations reference to Computershare and read the applicable plan documents. Do not infer that the plan supports fractional purchases simply because it is a direct-purchase plan. It is also separate from an Amazon shopping account, gift card, or retail purchase: those consumer products are not themselves stock ownership.
How should I check a broker before placing an AMZN order?
Start by confirming that the security is Amazon.com, Inc. common stock, ticker AMZN, rather than a similarly named instrument. Then check whether your brokerage permits AMZN orders in your account and whether it offers whole shares, fractional shares, or both.
For a fractional order, verify the dollar or share entry method, minimum order, fees, execution timing, order types, and whether the feature works outside regular market hours. If you may transfer the account later, ask how the firm handles fractional positions; if voting matters to you, ask what proxy arrangements apply. For an extended-hours order, confirm the window and restrictions separately instead of assuming the regular-session rules apply.

Finally, check the exchange calendar for the intended trading date and distinguish published exchange hours from the hours your broker actually accepts orders. Nasdaq sets the market schedule, but the brokerage controls the order-entry experience for its customers. Neither the ticker nor the schedule alone tells you whether a particular order will be accepted, filled, or filled at a desired price.
