Ampere announced a 256-core, 12-channel AmpereOne processor on May 16, 2024, saying it was ready on TSMC’s N3 process and designed for data-center workloads. The company claimed more than 40% higher performance than any CPU then on the market and said the design could use the same air-cooled thermal solutions as its 192-core AmpereOne.

That announcement describes an upcoming product, not an independently benchmarked shipping processor. Ampere’s current processor catalog, last updated March 26, 2026, lists AmpereOne and AmpereOne M models with up to 192 cores; it does not list a 256-core SKU. Availability of the announced part therefore remains unestablished by the current catalog and sources reviewed.

What Ampere announced

Ampere’s May 2024 announcement expanded the AmpereOne roadmap to a processor with 256 CPU cores and 12 memory channels. Ampere said the chip was ready on the N3 process node and targeted data-center workloads, including cloud-native applications and artificial-intelligence workloads. The primary announcement is available from Ampere Computing.

The announcement also included two positioning claims that need careful qualification:

  • Ampere said the processor would deliver more than 40% higher performance than any CPU on the market at that time. This is a vendor claim about an upcoming processor, not an independently verified benchmark result.
  • Ampere said the 256-core design would use the same air-cooled thermal solutions as its 192-core AmpereOne. That suggests a retrofit-friendly goal for existing data centers, but it does not provide a measured power, clock-speed or performance-per-watt result.

CEO Renée James framed the thermal decision around existing infrastructure: “The current path is unsustainable. We believe that the future data center infrastructure has to consider how we retrofit existing air-cooled environments with upgraded compute, as well as build environmentally sustainable new data centers that fit the available power on the grid.” Chief Product Officer Jeff Wittich said Ampere CPUs were intended to run workloads “from the most popular cloud native applications to AI.” Both are Ampere statements about the company’s strategy, not independent evaluations.

What 256 cores and 12 memory channels mean

Core count

Two hundred fifty-six cores can increase parallel throughput for workloads that keep many independent tasks busy, such as microservices, containers, web serving, analytics and some cloud infrastructure. Core count alone does not determine application speed: software parallelism, memory behavior, clock frequency, I/O, licensing and scheduling can all become limiting factors.

Memory channels

Twelve memory channels provide more paths between the processor and system memory than the eight-channel configuration listed for current AmpereOne models. That can help bandwidth-sensitive workloads, but the announcement did not publish memory capacity, supported DIMM population, memory speed or measured bandwidth for the 256-core part. Those details should not be inferred from the core count.

Air cooling

Ampere’s statement that the design could use the same air-cooled thermal solutions as its 192-core AmpereOne addresses deployment compatibility. It does not establish that every server chassis, motherboard, firmware version or rack power configuration will support the processor.

Is the 256-core Ampere CPU available?

Contemporaneous coverage reported Ampere’s expectation that the processor would become available in 2025, as described by Data Center Knowledge. However, the current Ampere processor catalog, reviewed with a March 26, 2026 update date, lists AmpereOne and AmpereOne M families ranging from 96 to 192 cores and does not show a 256-core model.

The defensible conclusion is not that Ampere canceled the processor. Rather, a public launch, orderable SKU and current specifications for the announced 256-core part are not established by the current catalog and sources reviewed. Organizations should request a specific product number, supported platform, delivery schedule and validation data from Ampere or an authorized server supplier before planning a deployment.

How current Ampere families compare

The following figures are current family ranges from Ampere’s catalog. They describe listed AmpereOne and AmpereOne M products, not the announced 256-core processor.

AI and systems partnerships do not confirm a 256-core launch

The May 2024 release also described a collaboration involving a separate Ampere CPU platform and Qualcomm Cloud AI 100 Ultra inference hardware. The accelerator was presented as a separate component; it should not be described as integrated into the 256-core CPU.

In May 2025, Ampere announced a Systems Builders program involving Broadcom, Supermicro, Giga Computing, ASRock Rack, Jabil and Rebellions. Ampere said a Giga Computing AmpereOne M platform was available for purchase. These announcements provide ecosystem context for AmpereOne M systems, but they do not verify that the 256-core roadmap processor shipped. See Ampere’s Systems Builders announcement.

Ampere’s later press listings also describe AmpereOne and AmpereOne M deployments with cloud providers. Those deployments show continuing platform activity, not availability of the specific 256-core SKU: Ampere press releases.

What data-center buyers should verify

  • Exact SKU and status: obtain a product number and written confirmation that it is shipping, sampling or still planned.
  • Platform support: confirm the server board, firmware, socket, DIMM population rules, PCIe layout and management-controller support.
  • Power and cooling: request rated TDP, sustained workload limits, inlet-temperature assumptions and the precise air-cooling solution validated by the vendor.
  • Workload evidence: ask for reproducible benchmarks relevant to your software, including compiler, operating-system, memory and accelerator configurations.
  • Commercial terms: verify lead time, warranty, lifecycle commitments and cloud-instance availability rather than relying on the 2024 roadmap date.

What the performance claim does—and does not—tell you

“More than 40%” is a comparative statement from Ampere’s 2024 announcement. The release does not establish the test workloads, competing processors, software versions, power limits, statistical method or independent lab responsible for the comparison. Treat it as a strategic claim that requires validation, not as a guaranteed uplift for a particular application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For procurement, the meaningful comparison is total throughput at the required service level: completed requests or jobs, memory capacity and bandwidth, accelerator requirements, software licensing, rack power and cooling cost. A processor with more cores may be a poor fit if the workload is serial, memory-capacity constrained or licensed per core.

Bottom line for readers tracking the roadmap

Ampere did announce a technically significant 256-core, 12-channel AmpereOne design in 2024, with N3 manufacturing and an air-cooled deployment objective. The company’s claimed performance advantage remains unverified in the cited material, and Ampere’s current catalog still tops out at 192 cores for the listed AmpereOne and AmpereOne M families. Until Ampere publishes a 256-core product page, SKU and shipping confirmation, treat it as an announced roadmap processor rather than an available part.
