Choose the U.S. Platinum Card from American Express if you will use its much larger lounge network, Hilton and Marriott elite status, and Amex-specific credits. Choose Citi Strata Elite if you can consistently redeem the Citi Travel hotel credit, Splurge and Blacklane credits, four Admirals Club passes, Priority Pass access, and Citi ThankYou transfer partners—especially American Airlines. The Amex fee is $895, compared with $595 for Citi Strata Elite. Neither card is automatically worth its fee: the right choice depends on credits and travel benefits you would buy anyway, not on adding every advertised maximum to a spreadsheet.
Amex Platinum and Citi Strata Elite at a glance
These are premium travel cards with different value patterns. American Express emphasizes a broad airport-lounge ecosystem, hotel-status benefits, and a large set of merchant or booking credits. Citi Strata Elite charges less and concentrates its value in Citi Travel bookings, selected lifestyle credits, Priority Pass membership, Admirals Club passes, and a published list of airline and hotel transfer partners.
| Feature | U.S. Platinum Card from American Express | Citi Strata Elite |
|---|---|---|
| Annual fee | $895, following the 2025–2026 refresh reported by American Express and the Associated Press | $595, according to Citi’s 2026 terms |
| Headline annual credits | Up to $600 Amex Travel hotel, $400 Resy, $300 Lululemon, and $300 digital-entertainment credits; enrollment, eligible merchants, booking channels, and expiration rules apply | Up to $300 hotel benefit for a qualifying two-night Citi Travel stay, $200 Splurge Credit on selected brands, and $200 Blacklane credit |
| Lounge access | Global Lounge Collection with 1,550+ lounges in 500+ airports worldwide, including Centurion, eligible Delta Sky Club access, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium, and other participating lounges | Priority Pass Select for the primary cardmember, authorized users, and up to two guests; four Admirals Club passes per calendar year |
| Published earning rates | The supplied terms do not establish a single comparable rate schedule for every purchase category | 12x hotels, car rentals, and attractions through Citi Travel; 6x air through Citi Travel; 6x Citi Nights restaurants Friday and Saturday from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Eastern Time; 3x restaurants at other times; 1.5x all other purchases |
| Hotel status | Hilton Honors Gold and Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite listed as benefits | No equivalent hotel-status benefit is established in the cited terms |
| Known application-fee credit | Global Entry or TSA PreCheck reimbursement benefit listed; amount and timing depend on current Amex terms | Up to $120 every four years for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck |
| Airline and hotel transfers | Membership Rewards transfer and travel-portal value depends on the redemption selected; a universal point value is not established | Published partners include American Airlines, JetBlue, Virgin Atlantic, Cathay Pacific, EVA Air, and Choice Hotels |
| Foreign transaction fees | Not stated in the supplied Amex material | No foreign transaction fees listed by Citi |
The figures above are headline terms, not guaranteed cash savings. A credit that requires a portal booking, enrollment, a selected merchant, a particular time window, or a two-night stay is worth only what you can use under those conditions.
Which card is better for your travel pattern?
Pick Amex Platinum when lounge breadth and hotel status matter most
Amex Platinum is the stronger fit if you regularly depart from airports where Centurion Lounges, participating Priority Pass or Plaza Premium locations, or eligible Delta Sky Clubs are convenient. American Express reports more than 1,550 lounges across more than 500 airports worldwide for its Global Lounge Collection (American Express, 2026). That scale can reduce the number of trips on which you are left without a lounge, although access rules differ by lounge program, ticket, airline, and guest policy.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The card also makes more sense when you already stay with Hilton or Marriott and can use Hilton Honors Gold and Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status. Status can provide benefits such as property-specific room or breakfast treatment, but the practical value varies by hotel, location, occupancy, and the conditions of each loyalty program. Do not assign a fixed dollar value unless you would otherwise pay for the same benefits.
Amex becomes especially compelling when several of its credits match existing spending: an Amex Travel hotel booking, Resy dining, eligible Lululemon purchases, and qualifying digital entertainment. Each credit has its own eligibility, enrollment, merchant, booking, and expiration conditions. Treat those conditions as part of the cost of earning the credit.
Pick Citi Strata Elite when Citi’s specific credits and American Airlines access fit your routine
Citi Strata Elite is a better match if you can complete a qualifying two-night hotel booking through Citi Travel, shop with brands in the Splurge program, use Blacklane, and take advantage of Priority Pass or Admirals Club access. The card provides four Admirals Club passes per calendar year, an unusual feature for a general premium card and potentially valuable for an American Airlines flyer who would otherwise buy day access or travel without a lounge.
Citi also lists American Airlines among its ThankYou transfer partners, alongside JetBlue, Virgin Atlantic, Cathay Pacific, EVA Air, and Choice Hotels. That published list is useful for travelers who can plan around award availability and partner rules. A transfer partner is not the same as a guaranteed seat or a fixed redemption rate, so value depends on the award you can actually book.
The lower $595 fee gives Citi a smaller break-even target than Amex, but only if you can use the benefits without changing your travel or shopping behavior. A credit you claim only by making an unnecessary purchase is a discount on that purchase, not a profit.
Annual-fee math: count realizable value, not the headline maximum
Amex Platinum’s potential credit stack
American Express refresh reporting for 2025 describes four major annual credits: up to $600 for Amex Travel hotel bookings, $400 for Resy, $300 for Lululemon, and $300 for digital entertainment (Associated Press, 2025). Added together, the advertised maximum is $1,600, but that is not a guaranteed $1,600 rebate. You must be eligible, enroll where required, use the specified booking channel or merchant, and meet any frequency or expiration rules. Check the current benefit terms before assigning a value.
Use a conservative calculation:
- List only purchases you would make with another payment method during the benefit period.
- For each credit, estimate the amount you would actually receive, not the cap. If you spend $180 on eligible Resy dining, the usable value is no more than $180, not $400.
- Subtract any extra cost caused by the required channel. For example, a portal rate that is higher than a direct hotel rate reduces the real hotel-credit value.
- Subtract the $895 annual fee from that adjusted value before assigning value to lounge visits, status, points, or protections.
Someone who naturally spends enough on all four categories could offset the fee on paper before valuing lounges or status. Someone who rarely uses Resy, does not shop at Lululemon, and prefers direct hotel bookings may realize far less.

Citi Strata Elite’s potential credit stack
Citi lists up to $300 each year toward a two-night hotel stay booked through Citi Travel, up to $200 in Splurge Credit at selected brands, and up to $200 in Blacklane credit (Citi, January 26, 2026). The maximum is $700, compared with the $595 annual fee, but the requirements are narrower than the arithmetic suggests.
- The $300 hotel benefit requires a two-night Citi Travel booking. A one-night stay, a direct booking, or an ineligible rate does not satisfy that requirement.
- Splurge applies only to selected brands and eligible transactions. Confirm the current merchant list and enrollment rules before spending.
- Blacklane value exists only if you would otherwise purchase qualifying chauffeur rides and can use the credit before it expires.
If you would book a two-night hotel through Citi Travel anyway, use the selected Splurge merchants, and have genuine Blacklane rides, Citi’s credits can cover more of the fee than a theoretical stack built from purchases you would not make. If those categories are not part of your routine, the $595 fee remains largely unsupported by credits.
Break-even examples
| Example traveler | Likely usable credits | What remains to justify the fee |
|---|---|---|
| Amex user with an eligible $600 hotel booking, $250 Resy spending, $120 Lululemon spending, and $180 digital entertainment | Up to $1,150 before considering booking-price differences and enrollment limits | The $895 fee could be covered by ordinary spending, leaving lounge access, hotel status, and other benefits as additional value only if used |
| Citi user with a qualifying two-night stay, $150 of eligible Splurge purchases, and $100 of Blacklane rides | Up to $550 | About $45 of the $595 fee remains before valuing Priority Pass, Admirals Club passes, points, protections, and transfers |
| Traveler who changes behavior solely to trigger a credit | Do not count the entire cap | The net benefit is the discount on a needed purchase, less any price premium, inconvenience, or unused portion |
These are illustrations, not promised returns. The exact value depends on the current terms, the price you would have paid elsewhere, and whether the credit posts successfully.
Lounge access: network size versus American Airlines usefulness
What Amex provides
The Global Lounge Collection is the broadest stated network in this comparison: more than 1,550 lounges in more than 500 airports worldwide. It includes American Express Centurion Lounges, Priority Pass locations, Plaza Premium lounges, and Delta Sky Club access when the cardmember meets the applicable Delta and ticket requirements. The network count is a published total, not a guarantee that every airport has a convenient location or that every lounge admits every traveler at every time.
Before relying on Amex for a connection, check the particular lounge’s operating hours, terminal location, guest restrictions, and same-day boarding-pass rules. A lounge in another terminal may be impractical during a short connection, and capacity controls can affect entry.
What Citi provides
Citi includes Priority Pass Select for the primary cardmember, authorized users, and up to two guests, subject to the program’s current terms. It also supplies four Admirals Club passes per calendar year. Those passes can be more useful than a larger generic network for someone who flies American Airlines from airports with an Admirals Club but does not hold another way to enter.
Compare access by itinerary rather than by a lounge-count contest. List the airports you use most, identify terminals and operating hours, and decide whether you travel alone or with guests. A solo traveler who often uses Centurion locations may prefer Amex; a family that can consistently use Priority Pass guest access or an American Airlines traveler with four annual club visits may favor Citi.

Rewards earning and transfer partners
Citi’s published earning schedule
Citi’s January 26, 2026 terms publish unusually specific bonus categories:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Purchase category | Earning rate | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| Hotels, car rentals, and attractions | 12x | Must be booked through Citi Travel |
| Air travel | 6x | Must be booked through Citi Travel |
| Citi Nights restaurants | 6x | Friday and Saturday, 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Eastern Time |
| Restaurants at other times | 3x | Applies outside the Citi Nights window under Citi’s category definitions |
| All other purchases | 1.5x | Base rate listed by Citi |
The high travel multipliers are useful only when the portal price, cancellation terms, loyalty-earning consequences, and convenience are acceptable. A direct hotel booking may provide better flexibility or hotel-program credit even when it earns fewer card points. Compare the complete transaction, not just the multiplier.
How to think about Amex Membership Rewards
The supplied Amex terms emphasize the Platinum card’s portal and benefit ecosystem rather than a directly comparable all-category earning table. Membership Rewards value depends on the transfer partner, award inventory, transfer ratio, and whether you would otherwise pay cash. There is no authoritative universal cents-per-point figure to apply to every cardholder, so do not insert one into a fee calculation.
For either card, keep separate calculations for cash-equivalent redemptions, travel-portal bookings, and airline or hotel transfers. A point balance is not the same as cash until you select a redemption and confirm the terms.
Citi’s published transfer list
Citi states that ThankYou points can transfer to partners including American Airlines, JetBlue, Virgin Atlantic, Cathay Pacific, EVA Air, and Choice Hotels. This can matter to travelers whose preferred routes align with those programs. Check transfer minimums, processing times, award charts or dynamic pricing, blackout rules, and account-registration requirements before moving points; transfers are generally intended for a specific redemption rather than speculative storage.

Hotel benefits and travel protections
Amex hotel status
Amex lists Hilton Honors Gold and Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status. The status is valuable when you stay often enough to receive benefits, but hotel participation and the exact treatment of elite perks vary. Confirm enrollment steps and link the correct loyalty account. Status generally does not make an expensive or inconvenient property a good booking by itself.
Citi protections and fees
Citi lists travel and shopping protections, no foreign transaction fees, and up to $120 every four years toward Global Entry or TSA PreCheck. The reimbursement is periodic rather than annual, so divide it across the four-year interval when comparing yearly value. Read the current benefit guide for covered purchases, documentation, claim deadlines, and exclusions before assuming a disruption will be reimbursed.

The supplied Amex material also lists a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck reimbursement benefit, but it does not establish the amount or reimbursement interval. Use the current Amex terms rather than treating it as an annual credit.
A practical decision method
Step 1: Record your real travel calendar
Review the previous 12 months of statements and your expected next year. Count hotel nights, airline tickets, dining during Citi Nights hours, Resy meals, eligible shopping, digital subscriptions, chauffeur rides, and airport visits. Mark which purchases are unavoidable and which would be caused by the card.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStep 2: Test booking-channel tolerance
Write down whether you are willing to book hotels, air, car rentals, and attractions through Citi Travel or Amex Travel. Compare total prices, cancellation rules, elite-credit treatment, and support. A portal requirement is a material restriction, not a minor footnote.
Step 3: Map lounge access to your airports
For each frequent airport, identify the lounge program, terminal, guest rules, and hours. Count visits you would actually make. Assign a value based on an alternative you would pay for or a benefit you would otherwise forgo; do not use an arbitrary value for every possible visit.
Step 4: Calculate conservative net cost
- Add only the portion of each credit tied to planned, eligible spending.
- Subtract portal price differences, taxes or fees that are not covered, and any unused amount.
- Subtract the annual fee: $895 for Amex or $595 for Citi.
- Add a separate, cautious estimate for lounge visits, hotel status, protections, and points based on actual use.
- Run a downside case in which one or two credits go unused or a portal booking costs more than a direct rate.
Step 5: Check the ecosystem fit
Choose Amex if its lounge locations, hotel statuses, and merchant credits line up with your life. Choose Citi if American Airlines access, Citi’s transfer partners, the two-night hotel benefit, and the Splurge or Blacklane credits are easier for you to use. If neither card wins without optimistic assumptions, a premium card may not be appropriate this year.
Common pitfalls that reduce the advertised value
- Counting a credit as cash. A $300 cap does not mean $300 of value when you spend $90 or miss the eligibility window.
- Ignoring enrollment. Some Amex and Citi benefits may require activation or a linked account. Complete enrollment before the purchase, not after.
- Using the wrong booking channel. Citi’s travel multipliers and hotel benefit require Citi Travel; Amex’s hotel credit is tied to Amex Travel under the reported refresh terms.
- Overlooking calendar timing. Citi Nights is limited to Friday and Saturday from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Eastern Time, and annual or calendar-year allowances can reset independently.
- Assuming every lounge admits guests. Priority Pass, Centurion, Delta Sky Club, Plaza Premium, and Admirals Club access have different guest and ticket rules.
- Valuing status at its best possible outcome. Hilton or Marriott benefits depend on the property and the stay; an unused status has no cash value.
- Transferring points speculatively. Partner availability and rules change. Confirm an award before transferring.
- Comparing multipliers without prices. A 12x portal booking can be inferior if the portal rate is higher or less flexible than a direct rate.
- Forgetting the fee date. Credits may be annual, calendar-year, quarterly, or tied to a booking period. Align your first-year plan with the account-opening and renewal dates.
Which card fits common traveler profiles?
Frequent Delta or multi-airline traveler
Amex is usually the more natural starting point when you can use Centurion, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium, and eligible Delta Sky Club locations across a broad set of airports. Confirm Delta’s current entry conditions for your ticket and itinerary before applying.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Frequent American Airlines traveler
Citi deserves a close look because four Admirals Club passes and American Airlines transfers address two parts of the same trip. The combination is most useful when your airports have Admirals Clubs and you can redeem ThankYou points for flights you would actually take.

Luxury-hotel loyalist
Amex’s Hilton Honors Gold and Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status may outweigh Citi’s lower fee if you stay enough nights to use the benefits. If your stays are mostly independent hotels or budget properties, status should not drive the decision.
Traveler who dislikes portals
Neither card is ideal if you avoid issuer portals. Citi’s largest earning rates and hotel credit require Citi Travel, while Amex’s reported hotel credit requires Amex Travel. Compare a less portal-dependent product rather than forcing a premium card into a booking pattern you dislike.
Occasional traveler with predictable lifestyle spending
Amex can work when Resy, Lululemon, digital entertainment, and a planned hotel booking are already in your budget. Citi can work when a two-night trip, selected Splurge merchants, and Blacklane rides are already certain. Without that predictable spending, the annual fee is difficult to justify.
What the fee comparison really says
The $300 difference in annual fees is meaningful, but it should not decide the comparison by itself. Citi’s $595 fee is easier to offset if you can use the $300 two-night hotel benefit and at least part of the Splurge or Blacklane credits. Amex’s $895 fee can be rational when its broader lounge coverage, hotel statuses, and several credits replace expenses you would otherwise incur.
Use the card whose benefits remain valuable in a conservative scenario. If your calculation depends on booking a more expensive hotel, buying products you would skip, visiting lounges solely to create value, or assigning an unsupported value to points, the result is too optimistic.
Bottom line
Amex Platinum is the better premium travel tool for broad lounge coverage, Hilton and Marriott status, and a traveler who can naturally use Amex Travel, Resy, Lululemon, and digital-entertainment credits. Citi Strata Elite is the better targeted choice for American Airlines flyers and travelers who can complete the Citi Travel two-night stay, use the Splurge and Blacklane credits, and benefit from Priority Pass guests and four Admirals Club passes. Calculate your own eligible spending and airport usage before applying; advertised maximums are not guaranteed savings.
