Chase Ultimate Rewards has a slight edge in published average value in 2026, but neither program is universally better. Chase is usually the easier default if you use World of Hyatt, United, Southwest or a simple 1-cent fallback. Amex Membership Rewards can produce more value when your trip fits partners such as Aeroplan, Flying Blue, ANA, Qatar Airways, Singapore KrisFlyer or Virgin Atlantic.
The practical answer is trip-specific: compare the exact award, taxes and fees, transfer ratio and cash fare in both programs, then move points only after confirming space. Published valuations are estimates for optimized redemptions, not guaranteed prices.
Quick verdict: which points are worth more?
| Priority | Better starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Simple, predictable floor | Chase Ultimate Rewards | Chase says points are typically worth 1 cent each for cash back or gift cards, with potentially higher value through Chase Travel℠ or transfers. |
| World of Hyatt, United or Southwest | Chase Ultimate Rewards | These programs are among Chase’s transfer options and can be especially useful for travelers who already use them. |
| Broad international-airline choice | Amex Membership Rewards | Amex’s roster includes Aeroplan, Flying Blue, ANA, Qatar Airways, Singapore KrisFlyer, Virgin Atlantic and other international programs. |
| Highest published estimate for a specific card | Depends on card and redemption | NerdWallet’s October 2026 estimate is 1.8 cents per Chase point for Sapphire Reserve cardholders, versus 1.3 cents per Amex point using Avianca LifeMiles as its reference. |
| Optimized points-and-miles use | Essentially tied | The Points Guy valued Amex at 2.00 cents and Chase at 2.05 cents in both its June and October 2026 snapshots. |
Those figures describe different methods and assumptions. They should narrow your search, not replace it. The award you can actually book determines your realized value.
How Membership Rewards and Ultimate Rewards work
Amex Membership Rewards
American Express allows eligible Card Members to transfer Membership Rewards points to participating frequent-flyer and hotel programs, or redeem them for travel, gift cards, statement credits, shopping and charitable donations. The issuer notes that value varies by redemption method.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Transfers are final and subject to the receiving program’s rules. Ratios differ by partner. For example, the captured Amex transfer information shows 1,000 Membership Rewards points becoming 1,000 Aeroplan points, while 1,000 points can become 2,000 Hilton Honors points. A 2:1 ratio does not automatically make a hotel transfer more valuable; the partner’s award prices and your alternative uses still matter.
That menu creates flexibility but also makes a quick comparison harder. A statement credit, gift card or shopping redemption may be easier than an award booking, yet it can produce a different return. Treat each option as a separate price: calculate what you receive for the points and compare it with a confirmed flight, hotel or cash alternative.
Chase Ultimate Rewards
Chase states that points are typically worth 1 cent each for cash back or gift cards, but may be worth more when redeemed through Chase Travel℠ or transferred to partners. Eligible bookings can receive a Points Boost of up to 50%, depending on the card and the booking.
Recommended Free Tools
Chase transfers are generally made in 1,000-point increments and are final. Partner programs set their own award prices, fees, expiration policies and availability. The same balance can therefore have a different practical value depending on whether you cash it out, use the travel portal or send it to an airline or hotel.
Transfer partners: breadth versus a targeted fit
Partner count matters only when a partner serves your route and has award space. Amex’s captured transfer page lists 20 partners: 16 airlines and four hotel programs. Examples include AerClub, Aeromexico Rewards, Air Canada Aeroplan, Air France-KLM Flying Blue, ANA Mileage Club, Avianca LifeMiles, Cathay Pacific, Choice Privileges, Delta SkyMiles, Emirates Skywards, Hilton Honors, Iberia, JetBlue, Marriott Bonvoy, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Singapore KrisFlyer, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic.
Chase lists these airline partners: Aer Lingus, British Airways, Air France-KLM Flying Blue, Iberia, JetBlue, Singapore Airlines, Southwest, United, Virgin Atlantic and Air Canada. Its hotel partners are IHG, Marriott Bonvoy, World of Hyatt and Wyndham.
| Use case | Amex Membership Rewards | Chase Ultimate Rewards |
|---|---|---|
| International airline coverage | Includes ANA, Aeroplan, Flying Blue, Qatar, Singapore, Virgin Atlantic and additional programs. | Includes Aer Lingus, British Airways, Flying Blue, Iberia, Singapore, United, Southwest, Virgin Atlantic and Air Canada. |
| U.S. airline access | Delta and JetBlue are listed among examples, with availability and ratios set by each program. | United, Southwest and JetBlue are listed partners. |
| Hotel choices | Choice Privileges, Hilton Honors and Marriott Bonvoy are listed examples. | World of Hyatt, IHG, Marriott Bonvoy and Wyndham. |
| Transfer increment | Partner-specific; confirm the current minimum and ratio before submitting. | Generally 1,000 points. |
| Reversibility | Completed transfers are final. | Completed transfers are final. |
Do not infer that one list is permanently superior. Partnerships, ratios and program terms can change, and a long list has no value if your preferred route is unavailable.

Start with the programs you already know you can use. A traveler who routinely books Hyatt rooms has a direct Chase option that may be more useful than an Amex hotel transfer. Someone planning an international itinerary may find Aeroplan, Flying Blue, ANA, Qatar Airways, Singapore KrisFlyer or Virgin Atlantic more relevant. If you generally fly Delta or JetBlue, Amex lists those programs; if you prefer United or Southwest, Chase lists them. These are practical fit questions, not rankings of the airlines.

Also check whether the partner accepts the exact award you need. A program may appear in both ecosystems, but the required points, taxes, surcharges and available dates can differ. The transferable currency is most valuable while it remains uncommitted; once moved, it follows the receiving program’s rules.
What the 2026 valuation estimates actually say
| Source and date | Amex Membership Rewards | Chase Ultimate Rewards | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Issuer guidance, 2026 | No single published value; Amex says value varies by redemption. | Typically 1 cent per point for cash back or gift cards. | A floor or baseline, not a promise for every travel booking. |
| NerdWallet, October 2026 | 1.3 cents per point, estimated using Avianca LifeMiles. | 1.8 cents per point for Sapphire Reserve cardholders, using World of Hyatt; 1.4 cents for Sapphire Preferred and Ink Preferred. | Card-specific estimates based on selected partner use. |
| The Points Guy, June 2026 | 2.00 cents per point. | 2.05 cents per point. | Optimized-redemption estimates. |
| The Points Guy, October 2026 | 2.00 cents per point. | 2.05 cents per point. | Another snapshot with the same published figures. |
A valuation is an estimate of what a skilled user might obtain, not the amount an issuer will give you. Your result changes with award inventory, transfer ratio, card eligibility, booking channel, taxes and fees, and the cash price you would otherwise pay.
Why estimates differ
The 1-cent figures are straightforward baselines, while the 1.3-, 1.4-, 1.8-, 2.00- and 2.05-cent figures assume particular cards, partners or optimized bookings. NerdWallet’s Chase estimate changes with the card: Sapphire Reserve is modeled at 1.8 cents through World of Hyatt, while Sapphire Preferred and Ink Preferred are modeled at 1.4 cents. Its Amex estimate uses Avianca LifeMiles. The Points Guy figures are broader optimized-redemption estimates and put the two currencies nearly even.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not average these numbers into a personal guarantee. If you would otherwise pay $400 for a ticket but would not actually buy that ticket at the published fare, its theoretical value may overstate what the points are worth to you. Conversely, a modest cents-per-point result can be worthwhile when it replaces an expensive, necessary trip and the cash charges are low.
How to compare the programs for one trip
Use this process whenever both balances are available. It prevents a transfer bonus or an attractive headline valuation from driving a poor redemption.
- Define the cash alternative. Record the lowest realistic cash fare or hotel rate for the same dates, cabin, room type and cancellation terms. Include taxes and mandatory fees.
- Search the direct partner programs. Check the relevant Amex and Chase partners for the exact dates and passenger count. Do not rely on a calendar that has not confirmed bookable space.
- Record the total points and cash. Capture the full award price, carrier surcharges, government taxes and any booking fees in each option.
- Convert through the current ratio. Divide the required partner points by the transfer ratio shown in your account. Ratios can differ by partner and can change without making old screenshots reliable.
- Calculate value. Use
(cash price − unavoidable award taxes and fees) ÷ points required × 100to get cents per point. Compare that result with the value of cash back, a portal booking or another confirmed award. - Check the card-specific path. If you hold an eligible Chase card, price the same itinerary through Chase Travel℠ and apply any displayed Points Boost. Compare the final points cost with a partner transfer.
- Transfer only after confirmation. Open the award booking far enough to verify inventory, passenger details and the exact points requirement. Then submit the transfer and complete the reservation promptly.
Illustrative calculation
Suppose a $600 fare has $50 in unavoidable taxes on an award ticket. A 30,000-point redemption would produce ($600 − $50) ÷ 30,000 × 100 = 1.83 cents per point. That arithmetic is an example, not a promise that either program will price your route at 30,000 points.
Compare like with like
Use identical dates, travelers, cabin, room category and flexibility. A basic economy cash fare is not a fair comparison with a fully flexible award, and a standard room is not equivalent to a suite. Include mandatory charges in both options. If one booking has a materially different cancellation or change policy, note that difference rather than treating the prices as interchangeable.
When Chase is usually the better choice
You use Hyatt, United or Southwest
Chase’s partner mix directly serves travelers who prefer World of Hyatt hotels, United flights or Southwest flights. If those programs routinely appear in your plans, the ability to move points without first converting through another currency can simplify booking and reduce the number of compromises.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

You want a dependable fallback
The issuer’s stated 1-cent typical value for cash back or gift cards gives Chase a clear baseline. It does not guarantee that every travel redemption beats 1 cent, but it lets you compare an award against a known alternative instead of valuing points at zero when no attractive space appears.
You hold Sapphire Reserve
NerdWallet’s October 2026 estimate gives Sapphire Reserve cardholders a 1.8-cent Chase value based on World of Hyatt, higher than its estimates for Sapphire Preferred and Ink Preferred. That estimate applies to the cited cardholder path; it should not be generalized to every Chase account.
You benefit from Points Boost
Chase says eligible bookings can receive up to a 50% Points Boost, with the exact increase depending on the card and booking. Check the price displayed for your itinerary; “up to” is not a universal rate.

When Amex is usually the better choice
Your route fits an international transfer partner
Amex can be more useful when your itinerary is served by Aeroplan, Flying Blue, ANA Mileage Club, Qatar Airways, Singapore KrisFlyer, Virgin Atlantic or another Amex partner. The advantage comes from a bookable award and a favorable price, not simply from the partner appearing on a list.
You can exploit partner-specific sweet spots
Different programs publish different award charts, distance bands, peak calendars and surcharges. A transfer to one partner may price a particular route better than a competing program, while the same points can be poor value elsewhere. Compare the final itinerary rather than assuming every Amex transfer is interchangeable.
You accept more research before transferring
Amex rewards flexibility with choice, but that choice requires checking ratios, award rules and availability. If you prefer a one-click cash-out and do not want to monitor partners, Chase’s stated baseline may be more practical even when an Amex transfer could theoretically produce a higher return.
You value redemption variety
Amex supports more than airline and hotel transfers: the issuer also lists gift cards, travel booked through Amex, statement credits, shopping and charitable donations. Those alternatives can be useful when an award is unavailable, but value varies by method. Price the specific redemption instead of assuming a transfer is always superior.

Ratios can change
American Express reported that, effective March 1, 2026, Cathay Pacific transfers changed from 1 Membership Rewards point to 1 Asia Mile to 5 Membership Rewards points to 4 Asia Miles. A transfer that looked sensible under the old ratio may no longer work after the change. Always read the ratio shown in the live transfer interface before submitting.

Transfers cannot be undone
Both issuers warn that completed partner transfers are final. A transfer made speculatively can strand points in a program you do not use, especially if award space disappears while the transfer is processing.
Award inventory is not guaranteed
Having enough points does not create a seat or room. Partner programs control inventory, blackout rules, peak pricing and fees. Search first, transfer second.
Taxes and surcharges can erase a headline value
Two awards requiring the same number of points can have very different cash charges. Include every unavoidable charge in the cents-per-point calculation, and compare the total with the cash fare rather than comparing points alone.

Old screenshots can mislead
Transfer pages, partner terms and award prices are not permanent. The Cathay change demonstrates why a ratio saved months earlier is not sufficient. Confirm the live ratio, the minimum transfer amount and the receiving account details immediately before submitting.
A practical decision framework
- Choose Chase first if Hyatt, United or Southwest is your normal choice, you value a simple 1-cent fallback, or a Chase Travel℠ Points Boost produces a lower confirmed cost.
- Choose Amex first if your route is served by an Amex international partner and the live award search shows a better net value after fees.
- Keep both ecosystems flexible when you have balances in each. Search both before committing; flexibility is most valuable before a transfer, not after it.
- Use cash instead when an award’s taxes, restrictions or poor cents-per-point result are worse than the fare you would buy directly.
Checklist before clicking “transfer”
- Is the partner and transfer ratio current in the issuer’s account interface?
- Did you verify bookable space for every traveler and the correct date?
- Did you record the final points total, taxes, surcharges and booking fees?
- Did you compare the same itinerary’s cash price and any Chase Travel℠ price?
- Will the receiving program’s rules, expiration policy and change fees work for you?
- Are you comfortable losing access to the points permanently after transfer?
Frequently asked questions
Are Amex points or Chase points worth more in 2026?
Published estimates are close. The Points Guy lists 2.00 cents for Amex and 2.05 cents for Chase in both June and October 2026. NerdWallet estimates 1.3 cents for Amex, 1.8 cents for Chase with Sapphire Reserve and 1.4 cents for Sapphire Preferred or Ink Preferred. Your confirmed itinerary matters more than the average.
Which program is better for hotels?
Chase is the more direct fit if you use World of Hyatt, IHG or Wyndham, all listed Chase hotel partners. Amex lists Choice Privileges, Hilton Honors and Marriott Bonvoy among its hotel options. Compare the room’s cash rate, award requirement and fees for your dates.
Which is better for international flights?
Amex has a broader international-airline selection in the listed examples, including ANA, Aeroplan, Qatar Airways and Emirates. Chase still covers major options such as Air Canada, Flying Blue, Singapore, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic. Route and award availability decide the winner.
Can I transfer points back after moving them?
No. Both issuers state that completed partner transfers are final. Confirm the award, traveler names and points total first.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Does a 2:1 Amex transfer ratio mean it is a better deal?
No. The ratio only describes how many partner points you receive. Hilton’s example of 1,000 Amex points becoming 2,000 Hilton points must be judged against Hilton’s award price, room value, fees and other uses for the Amex points.
Is Chase’s 1-cent value guaranteed for travel?
Chase describes 1 cent as the typical value for cash back or gift cards. Travel through Chase Travel℠ or a transfer can be worth more, and Points Boost can increase eligible booking value by up to 50%, but neither result applies to every booking.
Should I transfer speculatively during a promotion?
No. A promotion does not create award space, and a final transfer can leave points stranded. Confirm the exact seat or room, ratio and all cash charges first.
What if neither award beats the cash price?
Buy the cash fare or use the simplest confirmed redemption. Points are a payment option, not a requirement; a poor cents-per-point result and restrictive award can cost more in practical value than paying cash.
Bottom line
As of October 2026, Chase is the stronger general-purpose default when its hotel and airline partners match your habits, while Amex is often the more powerful specialist currency for international awards. The better program is the one that delivers the confirmed itinerary you want at the lower all-in cost.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Amex points or Chase points worth more in 2026?
Published estimates are close: The Points Guy lists 2.00 cents for Amex and 2.05 cents for Chase, while NerdWallet’s card-specific figures range from 1.3 to 1.8 cents. Your actual award determines value.
Which program is better for hotels?
Chase is a strong fit for World of Hyatt, IHG or Wyndham. Amex lists Choice Privileges, Hilton Honors and Marriott Bonvoy. Compare the specific room rate, points price and fees.
Can transferred points be returned?
No. Both Amex and Chase state that completed partner transfers are final.
Should I transfer points before finding an award?
No. Verify live award space, the current ratio, traveler details and all taxes and surcharges before transferring.
Does a 2:1 Amex ratio guarantee better value?
No. The partner’s award prices and your alternatives determine value; a larger number of partner points is not automatically a better redemption.
The Bottom Line
Choose Chase for its clear 1-cent fallback, Hyatt/United/Southwest access and potential Points Boost. Choose Amex when a specific international partner produces a better confirmed award. Always compare the exact itinerary, fees, ratio and cash fare before making an irreversible transfer.
