Verdict: The American Express Blue Business Plus is a strong fit for a business that wants one simple earning rate instead of tracking spending categories. It charges a $0 annual fee and earns 2X Membership Rewards points on the first $50,000 of eligible purchases each calendar year, then 1X. Eligible purchases made through AmexTravel.com earn 2X without using that $50,000 allowance.
The card is most valuable when your ordinary business spending stays below the annual 2X threshold and you can use Membership Rewards through travel, transfer partners, gift cards or other redemption methods at a value you consider worthwhile. Businesses with much more than $50,000 in non-AmexTravel spending, category-heavy expenses or suppliers that do not accept American Express should compare other options.

American Express describes the product as earning “2X points on the first $50,000 in eligible purchases per calendar year and 1X points thereafter, with no category restrictions and no annual fee.” The practical distinction is that the 2X rate is broad but capped, while the AmexTravel.com exception is both 2X and outside the cap.

How the 2X earning formula works
The $50,000 allowance resets by calendar year
The threshold applies from January 1 through December 31, rather than for 12 months from the date you open the account. All eligible purchases that post during that calendar year draw from the same $50,000 pool. If you open the card late in the year, the allowance still resets on January 1.

At 2X, spending the full allowance on qualifying purchases produces 100,000 Membership Rewards points:
- $50,000 in eligible purchases × 2 points per dollar = 100,000 points.
- Every additional eligible dollar after the allowance earns 1 point, subject to the account’s terms.
The calculation assumes the transactions are purchases that qualify for rewards. Fees, interest and other excluded transactions do not become eligible merely because the account has unused capacity.
Examples of spending below and above the cap

These examples isolate the card’s earning formula and assume every dollar is an eligible purchase. They do not assign a cash value to points. Your actual total can differ because of returns, adjustments, excluded transactions and the date a transaction posts.
AmexTravel.com is outside the cap
Eligible purchases made through AmexTravel.com earn 2X and do not reduce the $50,000 annual allowance. For example, if a business makes $50,000 of ordinary eligible purchases and $10,000 of eligible AmexTravel.com purchases in the same calendar year, the ordinary spend earns 100,000 points and the travel spend earns 20,000, for 120,000 points in total.
The exception applies to eligible AmexTravel.com purchases, not to every travel purchase. A flight, hotel or other travel charge made directly with a supplier or through another booking channel must be evaluated under the regular rules. Review the transaction’s eligibility in the account terms if the distinction affects your planning.

Transactions that do not earn points
The 2X language applies to eligible purchases, not every charge that appears on a statement. The rewards exclusions include:
- Fees charged to the account.
- Interest.
- Gift cards.
- Prepaid reloads.
- Person-to-person payments.
- Other cash equivalents.
Excluded transactions do not help you reach the $50,000 allowance and do not earn the 1X rate after it. Returns and credits can also reduce the net eligible purchase amount. Businesses should therefore base forecasts on ordinary supplier invoices, subscriptions and operating expenses that are genuinely eligible, rather than on total statement volume.

Why the absence of bonus categories matters
There is no rotating-category calendar or category-selection process. The card’s standard earning rule applies without requiring you to identify whether an expense is advertising, office supplies, shipping or another merchant category. That simplicity reduces the risk of choosing the wrong card at checkout or missing a bonus deadline.
The trade-off is that the card does not provide a higher rate for a particular type of business purchase. A company with predictable, high-volume spending in a category rewarded by another product may earn more by using a category card, even after accounting for that product’s annual fee and redemption conditions.
Annual fee, introductory APR and changing offers
The annual fee is $0, so there is no recurring fee to offset when you calculate the value of the points. That makes the card easier to justify for a business with modest spending or for an owner who wants to keep an account available without paying for unused benefits.

The issuer currently shows a 0.0% introductory purchase APR for 12 months. After the introductory period, the purchase APR is variable and shown as 16.99%-28.74%. The rate you receive depends on the application decision, and variable rates and promotional terms can change. The introductory APR is not a reason to carry debt beyond a repayment plan: once the period ends, interest at the assigned variable rate can outweigh the value of points.

Ways to redeem Membership Rewards points
The card earns Membership Rewards points rather than a fixed cash rebate. Your result depends on the redemption method you choose and the value available at the time.
Pay with Points for travel
You can use points toward eligible travel through the issuer’s Pay with Points option. This can be convenient when you want to reduce an out-of-pocket travel charge without searching for an award seat or room. Check the displayed points requirement before confirming because the value is determined by the specific travel booking.
Statement credits
Statement-credit redemptions apply points against eligible charges. They are straightforward for bookkeeping, but the value may differ from travel or transfer redemptions. Compare the amount of the credit with the number of points required rather than assuming every redemption has the same rate.

Gift cards
Gift cards are another direct-use option. Availability and the points required can vary by participating merchant and denomination. Treat gift-card value as the amount you would otherwise pay for that purchase, not as an automatic premium.
Transfers to airline and hotel programs
Membership Rewards points can be transferred to participating airline and hotel programs. Transfers are most useful when you already understand the partner program, can find an eligible award and are comfortable with its rules. The number of points needed, award availability and the value you receive can vary, so transfer only after confirming the specific booking you intend to make. A transfer is generally a one-way decision; verify the destination program’s terms before moving points.
Expanded Buying Power: useful flexibility, not a guaranteed limit
American Express markets an “Expanded Buying Power” feature as giving cardmembers freedom to spend above their credit limit and get business done. The wording does not mean every transaction above a stated limit will be approved. Spending decisions remain subject to the account’s terms and the issuer’s approval process.
If your business has irregular invoices, confirm how much spending capacity is available before committing to a large supplier payment. Keep cash on hand for the statement balance, and do not treat expanded capacity as permission to exceed what the business can repay.
Who is most likely to benefit
Good fit
- A business with broad, uncategorized expenses that generally remain within $50,000 per calendar year.
- An owner who values a $0 annual fee and does not want to manage spending categories.
- A cardholder who can use travel, transfer partners, gift cards or statement credits strategically.
- A business that can repay purchases before the introductory APR expires or that pays balances in full.
- A company whose key suppliers accept American Express at the point of sale.
Consider another structure
- Your non-AmexTravel eligible purchases consistently exceed $50,000 and would earn more under a higher flat-rate or category-bonus product.
- Your largest expenses fall into categories where another card’s bonus meaningfully exceeds 2X.
- Your vendors impose a surcharge for American Express that is greater than the rewards value.
- You need a predictable cash-back value instead of points whose value changes by redemption method.
- You expect to carry a balance after the 12-month introductory period.

Compare the Blue Business Plus with alternatives using the same business spending profile. The relevant questions are not simply “Which card has the highest headline rate?” but:

For a fair calculation, multiply the first $50,000 of eligible non-AmexTravel spending by 2, add 2X AmexTravel.com spending, then apply 1X to eligible non-AmexTravel spending above the allowance. Subtract any annual fee and account for merchant surcharges. Finally, value the resulting points using the redemption you would realistically choose.
Application and first-year setup checklist
- Read the live disclosure. Confirm the annual fee, introductory APR duration, post-introductory APR range, welcome offer and eligibility language shown for your application.
- Estimate calendar-year spending. Separate ordinary eligible purchases, AmexTravel.com purchases and excluded transactions. Use the calendar-year reset, not your account anniversary, when forecasting the 2X allowance.
- Check supplier acceptance. Ask major vendors whether they accept American Express and whether they add a card surcharge.
- Set a repayment schedule. If using the 0.0% introductory purchase APR, schedule repayment so the balance is manageable before the introductory period ends.
- Track the allowance. Monitor eligible purchases as the $50,000 threshold approaches. Expect the rate on later eligible purchases to be 1X.
- Choose a redemption plan. Decide whether your business is likely to use travel, transfers, gift cards or statement credits before allowing points to accumulate indefinitely.
- Review statements. Check that returns, credits and unusual transactions are classified as expected, and keep records for business accounting.
Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
Confusing the calendar year with the account year
A card opened in October does not receive a fresh 12-month 2X window. The first allowance runs only through December 31 and resets in January.
Assuming all travel earns the uncapped 2X rate
The uncapped treatment is specifically for eligible AmexTravel.com purchases. Travel purchased elsewhere does not automatically receive that exception.
Counting excluded cash-like transactions
Gift cards, prepaid reloads, person-to-person payments, fees, interest and other cash equivalents are excluded. Do not use them to manufacture spending toward the allowance.
Ignoring the post-introductory APR
The 0.0% purchase APR lasts 12 months under the current offer. Carrying a balance after that period can incur the assigned variable APR within the 16.99%-28.74% range.
Valuing every point identically
Travel, transfers, gift cards and statement credits can produce different values. Check the points requirement for the exact redemption instead of using a single assumed value.
Bottom line
The Blue Business Plus is a straightforward no-fee business card for broad spending: 2X on the first $50,000 of eligible purchases each calendar year, 1X thereafter and a separate 2X rate for eligible AmexTravel.com purchases outside the cap. It earns its place when simplicity and flexible Membership Rewards redemptions matter more than category bonuses.
