AMD’s November 17, 2025 announcement did not confirm that samples were already available. It said sampling of the radiation-tolerant Versal AI Core XQRVC1902 in an enhanced, lidless Class Y package was expected to begin in 2026, with flight-qualified units expected in 2027. The announcement did not specify the second half of 2027, and it described Class Y qualification as being sought—not completed. AMD positions the package for missions of up to 15 years; that is a target, not a guaranteed spacecraft lifetime. AMD’s roadmap announcement

What AMD announced—and what it did not

AMD said it had developed an enhanced organic lidless package for the Versal AI Core XQRVC1902 and was seeking Class Y qualification. The company’s stated roadmap was expected sampling in 2026 and flight-qualified units in 2027. Those are future-looking schedule statements from the November 2025 announcement, not confirmation that either milestone occurred. The source gives no 2H 2027 commitment.

At the time reflected by the available official information, no later AMD confirmation establishes that Class Y qualification was completed, sampling began, or the flight-unit schedule remained unchanged. Accordingly, Class Y should be described as a qualification effort, not a qualified product status.

What the XQRVC1902 is for

The XQRVC1902 is a radiation-tolerant adaptive system-on-chip intended for spaceflight, not a consumer processor. AMD describes the Versal AI Core XQR family as combining programmable logic, processing, AI and DSP engines, and high-speed connectivity. Potential workloads include onboard processing, digital payloads, and remote sensing. AMD characterizes radiation effects for total ionizing dose and single-event effects, but that description alone does not establish suitability for a particular orbit or mission. Engineers must assess the device against the mission’s radiation environment and system requirements. AMD Radiation Tolerant Versal AI Core Series Data Sheet DS946

How Class Y differs from Class B

AMD’s Class Y package is an enhanced space-grade design intended for longer mission durations than its Class B package. The distinction concerns package construction and AMD’s stated mission positioning; it should not be confused with the device’s radiation tolerance or treated as a guarantee of service life.

Comparison Class B Class Y
Package positioning Defense-grade; AMD describes suitability for space missions not exceeding seven years. Enhanced space-grade; AMD’s 2025 announcement targets missions up to 15 years.
Package construction Ruggedized, fine-pitch lidless package with a stiffener ring. DS946 identifies VSRA2197 with land-side capacitors. Enhanced organic substrate selected for strength and many temperature cycles. More conservative design rules keep metal traces away from high mechanical-stress areas and add two substrate layers. DS946 identifies VSYA2197 without land-side capacitors.
Qualification status in the cited announcements AMD announced completion of Class B qualification for its first space-grade Versal adaptive SoCs, including XQRVC1902, on November 15, 2022. AMD said on November 17, 2025 that it was seeking Class Y qualification; the cited announcement does not say it was complete.

The mission-duration descriptions are AMD’s package positioning, not independent validation of a spacecraft lifetime. AMD also says its Class B and Class Y manufacturing flows are consistent with MIL-PRF-38535; that statement should not be expanded into a claim of an unstated external certification for the entire device. Package dimensions and ordering differences

AMD’s DS946, revision 1.2, lists both the VSRA2197 and VSYA2197 as ruggedized, fine-pitch lidless packages with stiffener rings. Each has a 45 × 45 mm outline and 0.92 mm pitch. The VSRA2197 includes land-side capacitors; the VSYA2197 does not, although it retains a central 7 × 7 cavity. Shared outline dimensions do not by themselves establish that the packages are interchangeable: board design, assembly, electrical needs, and the full mechanical specifications matter.

What buyers and mission teams should verify

For a procurement or design decision, distinguish the announced target from the qualification and availability evidence needed for the specific mission. Confirm directly with AMD the current qualification state, sample access, flight-unit schedule, ordering configuration, and applicable technical documentation. Independently evaluate radiation exposure, temperature cycling, mechanical loads, lifetime requirements, and board-level implementation. A package’s stated mission-duration positioning does not replace that system-level assessment.
