AMD bought ZT Systems to move beyond supplying AI chips and software toward designing complete, rack-scale infrastructure for cloud customers. AMD kept ZT’s system-design and customer-enablement teams, then sold its manufacturing operation to Sanmina, which became a preferred manufacturing partner for new AMD products.
Why did AMD buy ZT Systems?
AMD already supplied key components of data-center infrastructure: CPUs, GPUs, networking silicon and ROCm software. ZT Systems added expertise in bringing those pieces together into rack-scale systems for hyperscale customers.
That systems work extends beyond choosing processors. Cloud deployments must integrate power, cooling, networking, firmware, serviceability and operational processes, then be validated before they can be installed at scale. A customer buying an AI cluster needs those pieces to work as a system, not merely a collection of individually capable chips.
AMD described the combination as a way to deliver end-to-end, cloud-optimized AI infrastructure and accelerate the design and deployment of AMD-powered systems. Those are AMD’s stated aims; the announcement does not establish an independently measured performance or deployment advantage.

What happened to ZT Systems, and when?
- August 19, 2024: AMD announced a definitive agreement to acquire ZT Systems, describing it as a provider of AI and general-purpose compute infrastructure for hyperscale companies.
- March 31, 2025: AMD completed the acquisition. Its closing announcement described a combination of AMD CPUs, GPUs, networking silicon and ROCm software with ZT’s rack-scale systems capabilities.
- May 19, 2025: AMD announced an agreement to sell ZT’s U.S.-headquartered data-center infrastructure manufacturing business to Sanmina, while retaining the design and customer-enablement teams.
- October 27, 2025: AMD completed the manufacturing-business sale to Sanmina.
What did AMD retain, and what did Sanmina take over?
AMD retained ZT’s rack-scale design and customer-enablement expertise. Those teams support system architecture and work with customers as AMD develops infrastructure for cloud deployments. Sanmina acquired the manufacturing business and became AMD’s preferred partner for new-product introduction (NPI)—the transition of a product design into manufacturing.
The arrangement separates system design and customer engagement from production. AMD can shape and validate the systems it offers while relying on a manufacturing partner to produce them. A preferred NPI relationship is not, by itself, evidence that Sanmina is AMD’s only manufacturer or that every AMD system is made there.

In an exhibit to its October 27, 2025 filing, AMD Data Center Solutions executive vice president and general manager Forrest Norrod said: “Rack-scale innovation marks the next chapter in the AMD data center strategy.”

How does this help AMD compete in AI infrastructure?
The deal gives AMD a broader role in the chain from silicon and software to rack-scale design and customer deployment. That can make AMD’s offer more relevant to cloud operators planning complete AI clusters, rather than only to buyers selecting processors or accelerators.

It does not, on the evidence AMD published about this transaction, prove that AMD’s systems outperform Nvidia’s or are cheaper, faster to deploy or more widely available. A meaningful comparison would need to examine the products and customer requirements involved, including:
- Vertical integration: which parts of the stack each supplier designs, validates and controls.
- Software and networking: ecosystem openness, compatibility and the tools customers need to operate workloads.
- System design and validation: how complete racks are engineered and tested before deployment.
- Manufacturing and deployment: production capacity, delivery timing and the steps required to install and operate a cluster.
- Customer choice and economics: available OEM or ODM partners and the total cost of the system for a particular workload.
AMD’s acquisition addresses its own systems-design capabilities; the transaction announcements do not supply neutral benchmark results across those comparison points.
